TOPEKA, Kan –&nbsp;The Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of Directors voted to approve an optional alternative fall season for those schools which are unable to offer opportunities for student-athletes during the traditional fall season. This does not disrupt those schools which are offering practice and competitions at this time.&nbsp;It does provide an option for schools whose seasons are now, or later, unable to continue.

The plan was approved by the Board with 45 in favor and 29 opposed.&nbsp; This plan effectively provides:

-An opportunity for student-athletes to participate in their fall activity that is suspended for the traditional fall months;

-Allows those schools with more favorable conditions to continue to practice/play;

-Allows for individual schools to evaluate and decide best course of action for their respective activities;

-Allows for flexibility at the activity specific level as some activities may continue and while others are suspended (only those suspended would be eligible for the alternative fall season);

-Schools have been placed into bands (groupings) according to their classification for the purpose of determining appropriate spring sport start dates;

-Maximum for total number of weeks participating and number of contests (traditional and alternative fall seasons) is congruent to max allowed in traditional fall season;

-In the band of schools in Classes 1A-4A (amended from published agenda), if more than half of the total suspend one or more activities for the season, the spring sport season would have a delayed start and a later conclusion;

-In the band of schools in Classes 5A-6A (amended from published agenda), if more than half of the total schools suspend one or more activities for the season, the spring sport season would have a delayed start and a later conclusion;

-In each band, the spring season will start on time and conclude on time if less than half of the schools need to utilize the alternative fall season;

Alternative Fall Season Available for Schools

Seven members of the Kansas State football team have tested positive for COVID-19 in the first outbreak since the Wildcats convened for summer workouts in June.

The Wildcats will continue to practice for the season-opener Sept. 12 against Arkansas State.

Wildcats coach Chris Klieman said this week he was wary about the first rounds of large-scale testing since students arrived on campus.

“I think every institution is worried about that over the new few weeks to a month with all of the students coming back,” Klieman said. “It’s going to be difficult, there’s no question. They’re still 18-to-22-year-old college students.”

As part of the $105 million&nbsp;Building Champions&nbsp;capital initiative, the Shamrock Zone is expected to be completed in time for the 2021 football season at an estimated cost of $50 million. The project will transform the south concourse and include permanent concessions and restrooms for the first time in the history of Bill Snyder Family Stadium, along with two new videoboards in the southwest and southeast corners of the stadium – which fans can begin enjoying in 2020.

Most notably, the Shamrock Zone includes a 13,500 square-foot club space that offers a unique gameday experience of 318 club seats, 10 loge boxes, and 10 suites that span the south end of Bill Snyder Family Stadium while providing an enhanced lounge area to be utilized for men’s and women’s basketball games.

The dramatic series of moves began when the Bucks — the NBA’s team from Wisconsin, a state rocked in recent days by the shooting by police officers of Jacob Blake, a Black man — didn’t take the floor for their game against the Magic.

The teams were set to begin Game 5 of their series shortly after 4 p.m. EST, with the Bucks needing a win to advance to the second round. Players had been discussing boycotting games in the bubble after the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin. 

More discussions were expected Wednesday, but even before that the Bucks apparently decided they would act. Magic players and referees were on the floor for the game but Milwaukee never took the floor.&nbsp; Former Kansas Jayhawk Frank Mason, is a member of the Bucks.&nbsp;

Following the Bucks decision, the other two playoff games Houston vs. Oklahoma City and Los Angeles vs. Portland have been postponed, according to the NBA.

NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt said in a statement that mid-September will likely be the first of many decisions about the 2020-21 season. Gavitt said the NCAA has developed and studied contingency plans in case the season cannot be started on Nov. 10.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Whit Merrifield had three hits, including a three-run homer, to back Danny Duffy’s strong start as the Kansas City Royals came back to beat the Minnesota Twins 4-2 and split Saturday’s doubleheader. Duffy (1-2) allowed two runs - one earned - on just two hits in five innings. José Berríos (1-3) surrendered four runs in four innings for Minnesota. Nelson Cruz homered in both games of and now has 407 career home runs, tying Duke Snider for 56th on the all-time list. The Twins won Saturday’s first game 4-2.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;For a second-consecutive season, Kansas State senior quarterback&nbsp;Skylar Thompson&nbsp;has been named to the watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the award’s committee has announced.

He is the first player in school history to be a two-time candidate for the award. Current K-State quarterbacks coach Collin Klein was the 2012 winner, while Chad May (1994) and Michael Bishop (1998) were finalists, and Jake Waters was a preseason candidate in 2014.

The mention on the Golden Arm Award watch list is Thompson’s fourth this preseason as he is also a candidate for the Maxwell Award, Manning Award and Wuerffel Trophy. He is one of 48 players on the Golden Arm Award watch list, including five Big 12 signal callers.

A native of Independence, Missouri, Thompson enters his final season at K-State ranked in the top 10 in school history in 10 career categories, while he is on the cusp of becoming the first player in school history to throw for 6,000 career yards and rush for 1,000 career yards.

Thompson is coming off a banner year in 2019 when he set career highs in passing yards (2,315), passing touchdowns (12), rushing yards (405) and rushing touchdowns (11) as he earned Honorable Mention All-Big 12 accolades, the first Wildcat signal caller to earn postseason accolades from the league’s coaches since Waters in 2014.

The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award is presented annually to the top senior and upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Selection Committee. UNDATED (AP) — Major college football will be the only championship decided by the NCAA, and the prospect of holding that still hangs in the balance.

The NCAA has called off all fall championship events except for major college football because of the limited number of schools competing in sports such as men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball during the first semester.

NCAA President Mark Emmert made the announcement in a video posted on Twitter, although it has been clear this was coming as conferences canceled fall sports seasons because of the coronavirus pandemic.

K-State and Riley County officials have been talking about the number of fans allowed into Bill Snyder Family Stadium for Wildcat football games this fall during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gene Taylor, Athletic Director, said they're working with the county on the number of fans. "We do know it's going to be limited, we just don't know what that limit's going to be. "

Taylor noted that hopefully in the next few days K-State can put out their operational plan even if there is not a fan number. "But we're still kind of finalizing that and tweeking that. But the county health department and folks in the county are the ones who'll give us that number and the go ahead at some point."

K-State will now open the season on September 12 by hosting Arkansas State at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The Wildcats are 2-0 all-time against the Red Wolves, while it will be the first meeting between the two schools in 40 years. K-State earned a 31-7 victory in Manhattan in 1980 and also defeated A-State, 37-6, in Manhattan in 1948.

The September 12 start date is the latest in the year that K-State will begin a season since 1992 (September 19 vs. Montana), while it is the first time in school history that K-State will play less than two non-conference games.

Following its first bye week of the season, Kansas State opens Big 12 play on September 26 when the Cats travel to Oklahoma. It will be the second-straight year the Wildcats open Big 12 play in the state of Oklahoma (at Oklahoma State in 2019), while it will be the first in Norman since a 24-19 victory over the sixth-ranked Sooners on September 22, 2012.

The Wildcats Big 12 home opener is slated for October 3 against Texas Tech before traveling to TCU on October 10. The second bye week of the season is on October 17 before K-State hosts Kansas on October 24 and travels to West Virginia – its original conference opener – on October 31.

The month of November opens with a visit from Oklahoma State on November 7 prior to the third bye of the schedule on November 14. From there, the Wildcats travel to Iowa State (November 21) and Baylor (November 28) before closing out the season on December 5 with a home contest against Texas. It will be the first home December game since defeating West Virginia, 24-23, in 2015.

The 2020 Big 12 Championship game will be held at AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas and is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 12.

Although the number of fans able to attend games this fall remains unknown, the department continues to work with local county, city and University officials. Season ticket holders will be contacted via email as soon as capacity and ticket details are finalized.
