CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) — Southeast Missouri has hired Kansas State assistant Brad Korn as its new basketball coach. 

Korn had spent the past five seasons with the Wildcats, the past four as an assistant coach. He helped the school make three NCAA Tournament appearances and win a share of the Big 12 regular-season two years ago.  Korn takes over for Rick Ray. He was fired after going 51-104 over five seasons, including a 7-24 mark this past season.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;In an announcement by the Collegiate Sports Video Association (CSVA, Kansas State Director of Video Services&nbsp;Scott Eilert&nbsp;has been named the 2019-20 Big 12 Conference Video Coordinator of the Year.

Eilert was selected by his peers in the Big 12 to receive the award, his sixth conference video coordinator of the year award. In 1998, he was selected as the Bob Matley National Video Coordinator of the Year. This year’s conference award makes him a finalist for the Bob Matey award, which is presented to the video coordinator who displays innovation, determination, perseverance, and technical skill as portrayed by the late Bob Matey, legendary Video Coordinator from Texas A&amp;M.

Eilert is in his 29th season overseeing the football program’s state-of-the-art video editing system as Kansas State’s senior video coordinator. He is a founding member and former executive officer of CSVA and was inducted into the organization’s Sports Film and Video Hall of Fame in May of 2017. In 2001 and again in 2003, Eilert won SAVVY Awards for best motivational video, while his 2010 submission in the “highlight” category placed second.

Eilert has played a vital role in the success of the Wildcat football program. He coordinates and implements the use of video technology for practices and games, as well as managing statistical analysis tools for the coaching staff to use in game strategy preparation.

In addition to his work assisting the coaching staff and promoting the program, Eilert has also played a major role in the upgrades and improvement of facilities around Bill Snyder Family Stadium, providing audio/visual consultation for the West Stadium Center, while he was directly involved with audio/visual integration for the Vanier Family Football Complex featuring A/V technology supporting the needs of the football players and coaching staff, as well as Vanier Complex guests.

Having supported the Wildcats for 21 bowl games and two Big 12 Championships, other highlights of Eilert’s career include facilitating the video needs of the Wildcats during their 1992 regular season game in Tokyo, Japan. K-State spent a week in Japan as they prepared to play Nebraska in the Coca-Cola Classic. Eilert also spent a week at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin with Manhattan and Junction City dignitaries documenting how America’s fighting forces train for military action. Another great moment for Eilert is when he ran main camera and served as editor for the internet vignettes known as “The Recruit,” a creative collaboration with Emmy Award-winning actor Eric Stonestreet to celebrate head coach Bill Snyder and the start of the 2018 football season.

A 1991 K-State graduate, Eilert spent three years as K-State’s assistant video director while an undergraduate student. He also spent one year as a video assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs as well as a broadcast engineer for the Kansas City ABC affiliate, KMBC.

Outside of his busy professional life, Eilert takes great pride serving on the board of directors for Big Lakes Developmental Center, Inc. BLDC is a private, nonprofit-organization serving individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities covering several counties in Kansas.

A native of Overland Park, Kansas, Eilert is married to the former Meggan Luke. The couple has two daughters, MaKenna and Hailey.

Season ticket priority deadline for football is extended to May 1

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Chuck Lillie, a bright young mind in the recruiting and scouting world, has been hired by Kansas State’s football program as a Scouting Analyst.

Lillie will spend his time evaluating film of prospects and assisting the football coaches in their recruiting efforts. He will also work with Director of Football Recruiting&nbsp;Taylor Braet&nbsp;and the recruiting staff in hosting prospects on campus.

“We are thrilled to have Chuck as a part of our program,” head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;said. “We knew we wanted to expand our recruiting staff and provide more assistance for Taylor and&nbsp;Hank Jacobs, and to get someone like Chuck is phenomenal for our program. He not only comes from one of the top football programs in the country, he has tremendous organizational skills, brings a great deal of energy and is well-connected in the recruiting world. We are excited to have him on board.”

Lillie worked for five seasons at Clemson while obtaining his undergraduate degree, including three seasons in recruiting. He comes to Manhattan after serving in the 2019 pre-season as a Pro Scouting Intern with the New York Giants before returning to Clemson to serve as a Playoff Analyst for the Tigers’ 2019 campaign.

“I’m extremely excited to join Coach Klieman and the entire Kansas State football family,” Lillie said. “It’s an honor to be working for this staff, and I’m looking forward to helping bring championships to Kansas State.”

Lillie earned his start at Clemson as a recruiting assistant from 2015 to 2017 where he developed a very thorough understanding for the Tigers’ unique style of recruiting. He collaborated with coaches and colleagues to create strategies to generate interest in Clemson among all recruits. He also assisted in the hosting of prospects and families while on campus and in Football Operations complex.

After graduating from Clemson with a degree in Sports Communication in May 2017, Lillie was a Recruiting Operations Intern for one year before pursuing his master’s in Athletic Leadership and serving as a Defensive Graduate Student Intern for the Tigers during their undefeated National Championship run in 2018.

While working on the recruiting side, Lillie assisted coaches and the recruiting department in execution of both day-to-day and big-picture recruiting plans. He worked to identify any unknown prospects and passed those prospects along to coaches to be evaluated further. He also worked directly with the graphic design department to send out personalized graphics to recruits.

Working with the Tiger defensive staff, Lillie assisted coaches with daily preparations for practice, diagramed opponent offensive plays, developed weekly opponent game plans and assisted in weekly opponent breakdown.

In his one year in East Rutherford, Lillie studied and evaluated NFL players and made cut-up tapes on players for the Giants’ Pro Personnel Department to evaluate. He also monitored the daily NFL waiver wire and managed free agent short lists across all positions. In addition, Lillie wrote advanced scouting reports on upcoming opponents, including team tendencies and personnel packages, and he assisted with all free agent workouts.

Lillie is a native of Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland in 2013.

In response to the executive order from Governor Kelly this week on the closure and cessation of in-person instruction in all Kansas schools through May 29th, the Kansas State High School Activities Association is canceling all spring championships, competitions and festivals for the remainder of this school year.

KSHSAA said as a commitment to the health of Kansas students and communities the best decision and only reasonable response was to cancel the regular season and post-season spring activity season.&nbsp;

KSHSAA is also strongly discouraging non-school activity participation at this time in an effort to mitigate the ommunity transmission of coronacirus. All CDC, KDHE and KSDE recommendations for preventing disease transmission should be followed at this time for any non-school activity in which a student participates.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas has finished the season No. 1 in The Associated Press college basketball poll, receiving 63 of 65 first-place votes from a national media panel. Gonzaga was second and Dayton third with Florida State and Baylor rounding out the top five. 

It's the fourth time since the inception of the men's poll for the 1946-47 season that the Jayhawks finished on top. The AP poll is typically released before the NCAA Tournament settles the national champion. The tournament was canceled this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Stanard (STAN-urd, who has 20-seasons worth of experience as a defensive coordinator, comes to K-State after spending the last three years as the defensive ends coach at Syracuse. He began his coaching career at Nebraska following his playing days with the Huskers, and he crossed paths with Klieman at North Dakota State in 2012 and 2013 when Stanard tutored the Bison linebackers.

“We are excited to add Steve to our defensive staff,” Klieman said. “Steve and I have experience working together in the past, and I have continued to follow him throughout his career. He brings an abundance of experience tutoring linebackers and is very familiar with this area of the country. He has done a great job the last few years working with the Syracuse defensive ends, but I know that he is ready to return to coaching the linebackers and will do a phenomenal job with the group that we have here.”

Over the last two seasons tutoring the Orange edge rushers, Stanard helped Syracuse produce 56 takeaways (2.2 per game) as it held a plus-22 turnover margin during that span. Stanard guided the careers of Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman, who developed into one of the ACC’s most productive tandems during that time. Robinson logged 32.5 career tackles for loss and finished his career seventh in team history with 17.5 sacks, while Coleman registered 26.5 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks.

Prior to joining the Syracuse staff, Stanard served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Wyoming from 2014 to 2016. In 2015, Stanard protégé Logan Wilson led all conference rookies in tackles per game (6.7) and was voted the 2016 Mountain West Freshman of the Year. Stanard’s unit helped Wyoming to a berth in the 2016 Mountain West title game and to an appearance in the Poinsettia Bowl as the Cowboys ranked third nationally with five defensive touchdowns and were 10th in the country in takeaways (27).

Stanard went to Wyoming from NDSU as he helped the Bison earn a 29-1 record and capture consecutive FCS national titles. His work with the linebackers contributed to the Bison boasting the nation’s top-ranked scoring defense in both 2012 (11.5 points per game) and 2013 (11.3 points per game). In 2013, Stanard coached Grant Olson, who was named an All-American by the Associated Press.

Stanard’s experience as a defensive coordinator includes running defenses at six schools. In addition to his three years running the Wyoming defense, he spent three seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Tulane (2009-11, five years as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Colorado State (2003-07, three years as the defensive coordinator at New Mexico State (2000-02, one season as the defensive coordinator at South Dakota (1996) and five years as the defensive coordinator at Nebraska Wesleyan (1991-95).

Stanard also served as the defensive line coach at Ohio in 2008, while he coached the defensive ends and outside linebackers at New Mexico State from 1997 to 1999 before being named the Aggies’ defensive coordinator in 2000.

Stanard began his college coaching career in 1988 as a student assistant coach at his alma mater, Nebraska. During his time in Lincoln both on the field and on the sideline, Stanard was a member of seven bowl teams, while he has been a part of 12 total bowl squads as either a player or a coach.

After a three-year stint with the Huskers, Stanard received his first full-time coaching job in 1991 at Nebraska Wesleyan. He served as the school’s defensive coordinator, and later, head coach and assistant athletic director.

Stanard earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Nebraska in 1989 and later obtained his M.B.A. from the school in 1995.

Stanard and his wife, Jennifer, have four children – Austin, Paige, Max and Madison.

The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because no decision had been announced. They said baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred planned a conference call with his executive council to discuss the situation and then a call with controlling owners of the 30 clubs. An announcement would follow. The season had been scheduled to start March 26.

“After consultation with our Board of Directors it was decided that cancelling these championships was in the best interest of the health and safety of our student-athletes,” said Commissioner Bob Bowlsby.&nbsp;

TOPEKA, Kansas — If Kansas lawmakers pass a bill 
allowing student-athletes to make money off endorsements, you might see 
the next five-star KU or K-State basketball recruits selling cars, shoes
 or soda.

<a href="http://www.sfltimes.com/sports/ncaa-presses-senate-for-guardrails-on-athlete-pay" target="_blank">Dozens of states</a>, including <a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2019_20/measures/sb474/" target="_blank">Kansas</a>, <a href="https://www.ozarksfirst.com/local-news/local-news-local-news/both-parties-support-paying-college-athletes-in-missouri/" target="_blank">Missouri </a>and <a href="https://oklahoman.com/article/5651462/oklahoma-legislator-files-bill-to-pay-college-athletes" target="_blank">Oklahoma</a>, are thinking about changing the rules since the <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/10/29/774439078/ncaa-starts-process-to-allow-compensation-for-college-athletes" target="_blank">NCAA said</a>
 in October that it will eventually allow student-athletes to be paid 
for their name, image and likeness. These bills are stopgaps, aimed at 
putting rules in place should there be a period of time before national 
rules are approved by the NCAA or Congress.

It’s a question that’s been problematic for the NCAA for years; in 2016, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/04/us/politics/supreme-court-declconsider-ncaa-rules-on-paying-athletes.html" target="_blank">U.S. Supreme Court declined</a> to take up an antitrust suit filed by a former UCLA basketball player. California took matters into its own hands last year <a href="https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200SB206" target="_blank">with a law</a> to let students profit off their likeness, though it doesn't take effect until 2023.

Currently,
 student-athletes are ruled ineligible if they make money on 
endorsements. Missouri U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver has proposed <a href="https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/rep-cleaver-to-propose-law-requiring-colleges-to-pay-student-athletes" target="_blank">a national rule</a>
 that would have colleges directly pay athletes. The Kansas plan doesn’t
 go as far, instead allowing money from outside endorsement contracts.

Emporia
 State University President Allison Garrett urged Kansas lawmakers to 
approve the bill, but ultimately hopes it never has to take effect.

“This
 legislation in Kansas makes sense at this time,” Garrett said, “but the
 hope would be that there is that federal legislation.”

It’s a 
sort of begrudging endorsement from the schools. Kansas State University
 Athletic Director Gene Taylor wants to keep up the current system, in 
which student-athletes aren’t allowed outside endorsements deals.

“We
 would prefer no rules, honestly,” Taylor said. “Just let us continue 
that this scholarship is valuable enough. But that’s not the direction 
this is going, so we have to move forward.”

The colleges don’t 
want to be on the cutting edge, where they might run afoul of NCAA rules
 and trigger punishments from the league. But they also don’t want to be
 left behind if other states allow endorsement deals.

To walk that tightrope, <a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2019_20/measures/sb474/" target="_blank">Kansas’ bill</a>
 includes a trigger: It would only legalize outside endorsement deals 
for student-athletes after 15 other states have similar laws.

For schools in Kansas, the concern is that recruiting won’t be easy 
if other states allow athletes to make money but Kansas doesn’t.

“I
 think it gets very tough,” University of Kansas Director of Athletics 
Jeff Long said. “Without this bill passing, we would be placed at a 
disadvantage.”

The discussion comes at a time when KU <a href="https://www.kcur.org/post/ku-denies-wrongdoing-response-ncaas-charges-recruiting-violations" target="_blank">is being investigated</a>
 for potential NCAA recruiting violations. It’s based on federal court 
testimony in which Adidas representatives said they made payments to 
recruits. The school didn’t address the allegations during a legislative
 hearing in Topeka, but <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2020/03/05/kansas-objects-to-ncaa-charges-in-response-to-allegations/111397794/" target="_blank">told the NCAA</a> that the agents weren’t working on behalf of KU.

Garrett wants to see enough controls in a Kansas law so the endorsement deals aren’t used as part of recruiting.

Lawmakers
 could take action on the bill later this session or continue work next 
year, according to Republican Sen. Julia Lynn, who chairs the Senate 
Commerce Committee.

Lynn said there are still a variety of details to work out, including how the endorsement deals would be taxed.

“Collegiate athletics is very complex. There are multiple layers there,” she said. “The money is really big in this issue.”

Republican
 Sen. Molly Baumgarnder wants to make sure there are enough protections 
in the bill, so athletes and their families know what they’re getting 
into with endorsement deals, especially when it comes to high school 
recruits.

“Agents are going to be flocking to high schools to try
 and enter into that contract,” Baumgarnder said. “How do the high 
school counselors, how do the high school coaches help that student that
 might be embarking on that next step?”

Smaller private schools, 
who aren’t major players in the recruiting game like KU, K-State and 
Wichita State are, are concerned about the types of endorsements that 
might be made available.

Some of the 20 schools in the Kansas 
Independent College Association have faith traditions that disapprove of
 alcohol and don’t allow it on campus.

But under the bill, the schools wouldn’t have any say in outside endorsement deals.

“A
 student-athlete could share his or her likeness with a beer company and
 the institution would have no power to limit such a contract,” KICA 
President Matt Lindsey told lawmakers.

 <li>Kansas State (9-20, 2-14 Big 12) begins the last week of the regular season with a trip to Oklahoma State (15-14, 5-11 Big 12, as the Wildcats travel to Stillwater, Okla., take on the Cowboys at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Wednesday night. OSU won the first meeting, 64-59, in Manhattan on Feb. 11 to end a 4-game losing skid in the series and will be looking to sweep the regular-season series for the first time in the Big 12 round-robin era. The game will tip at 8:05 p.m., CT on ESPNU with Robert Ford (play-by-play) and Tim Welsh (analyst) on the call.</li><li>K-State saw its losing streak hit 9 games on Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats battled No. 1/1 Kansas for the entire 40 minutes before falling 62-58 at Bramlage Coliseum. Big 12 Player of the Year candidate Devon Dotson scored a game-high 25 points, including 5 in a pivotal 8-0 run late in the second half, to push the Jayhawks winning streak to 14 games. Trailing by as many as 9 points in the first half, K-State used a 21-9 run, sandwiched between the last 4 minutes of the first half and the first 4 minutes of the second half, to take a 43-39 advantage with 15 to play. However, with the score knotted at 48-all with 7:23 to play, Kansas scored 8 consecutive points out of the media timeout to take control and sweep the season series.</li><li>The loss was yet another disappointing one for the Wildcats, which has now lost 12 games by single digits (including 7 in Big 12 play) and 7 by 5 points or less. During the current 9-game skid, the team has lost 6 games by 10 points or less, including 5 by single digits. The 12 losses by single digits are the most in a single season since the 2002-03 team lost 13 games by single digits.</li><li>After losses to No. 2/2 Baylor (66-85) and No. 1/1 Kansas (58-62, K-State played the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in consecutive games for just the second time in school history and the first time since losing to No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 Michigan at the 1964 Final Four at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The Wildcats are just the fifth Division I team since 1996-97 to play the nation’s top two teams in the same week and the first since West Virginia in 2016.</li><li>During the 9-game losing streak, K-State has allowed opponents to average 70 points on 47.2 percent shooting, including 37.8 percent from 3-point range, and 73.5 percent from the free throw line, while averaging just 60.9 points on 40.4 percent shooting, including 29 percent from long range, and 64 percent from the free throw line. The team is averaging 10.2 assists on 21.0 made field goals with 14.2 turnovers per game, while opponents are averaging 14 assists on 22.9 made field goals with 15.4 turnovers per game. Senior Xavier Sneed is averaging 12.8 points during that span, but is connecting on just 32.1 percent (34-of-106) from the field, including 26 percent (13-of-50) from 3-point range.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Injuries have been a big part of K-State’s season, as 4 players have combined to miss 53 games, which has caused coach Bruce Weber to use 9 starting lineups. The 9 lineups are the most since using 11 in 2014-15 with at least one true freshman starting in 26 of 29 games, including rookies DaJuan Gordon and Montavious Murphy starting together 8 times, including in 7 of the last 11 games, and Antonio Gordon starting the games against Texas (2/22/20) and No. 1/1 Baylor (2/25/20). The last time a pair of freshmen started together in more than one game came when Barry Brown, Jr., and Dean Wade started the last 9 games of 2015-16.</li>

Kansas State plays at Oklahoma State Wednesday night

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State safeties coach&nbsp;Joe Klanderman&nbsp;has been promoted to defensive coordinator, while cornerbacks coach&nbsp;Van Malone&nbsp;has added the titles of assistant head coach and passing game coordinator, head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;announced Monday.

Klanderman, who has coached all three levels of the defense during his career, will serve as a defensive coordinator for a second time after holding the position from 2007 to 2013 at his alma mater, Minnesota State. He will continue to tutor the Wildcat safeties, as Klieman will search for a new linebackers coach to replace Scottie Hazelton, who left to become the defensive coordinator at Michigan State.

“Joe is one of the best defensive coaches I have ever been around, and he is ready for this role,” Klieman said. “In addition to already having coordinator experience, Joe knows our defense as well as anyone, and it is important to continue to develop our players and keep them in our system. We appreciate what Scottie did for our program this past year and hate to see him leave, but we are excited about our future with Coach Klanderman and the rest of our defensive staff.”

Klanderman and Malone were vital parts of a defensive staff that helped the Wildcats rank first in the nation in third down defense at 28.0%, which was the best by K-State since at least 2003. The Wildcats also ranked 15th nationally in first down defense (224) and put together a No. 2 ranking in the Big 12 in pass defense (202.9 yards per game, their best ranking in the conference since in five seasons. Additionally, K-State allowed just 21.4 points per game in 2019, its best mark since 2003.

“Van is a veteran coach who has immediately had a big impact on our program and student-athletes,” Klieman said. “Not only is he one of the most respected defensive coaches in college football, but his experience, leadership and development of young men is unmatched.”

Under Klanderman’s guidance,&nbsp;Denzel Goolsby&nbsp;earned 2019 Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors, the first Wildcat safety to do so since 2016.

<a>“I’m so appreciative to have the opportunity to expand my role in something much bigger than myself,” Klanderman said. “We’re going to work tirelessly to put a product on the field that Wildcat fans can be proud of. Klanderman came to Manhattan from North Dakota State after helping the Bison win four national titles in his five seasons on staff, which included a perfect 15-0 record in 2018. The NDSU defense was a major factor in its undefeated run as the Bison ranked first nationally with 23 interceptions, including six by safety Robbie Grimsley and five by safety James Hendricks.

Overall, the Bison ranked in the top five in scoring defense each of his five years on staff, including a No. 2 ranking in 2017 (11.6 points per game) and No. 3 spot in 2018 (12.6). His secondary has also helped NDSU rank in the top 11 in passing yards allowed in four of the five years, with a No. 3 national ranking in 2017 (147.9 yards per game).

Malone hit the ground running in 2019 by tutoring&nbsp;AJ Parker, a junior who picked up Honorable Mention All-Big 12 accolades despite missing the final five games of the year due to injury. At the time of his injury, Parker was tied for second in the Big 12 and 17th nationally in interceptions.

Malone came to Manhattan after one year working as a defensive quality control coach at Mississippi State, helping the Bulldogs earn an 8-4 record and a No. 1 national ranking in scoring defense and a No. 3 mark in total defense.

Prior to Mississippi State, Malone was the defensive coordinator at SMU for three seasons, including the 2017 campaign when he was named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National FBS Assistant Coach of the Year. That year, he tutored three All-AAC performers, including Justin Lawler, who was the conference’s leader in sacks.

Malone coached Lawler to his first All-AAC honor in 2016, a year he was joined on the list by cornerback Horace Richardson and safety Darrion Millines. Malone’s 2016 defense was statistically one of the 10 most improved in college football. The Mustangs ranked seventh nationally in interceptions per game and forced 26 turnovers overall. In fact, two of Malone’s three defenses finished in the top 20 in defensive turnovers.
