MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas State Men's Basketball Head Coach Bruce Weber and Junior Guard Rudi Williams spoke to members of the media via Zoom on Tuesday ahead of Kansas State's 2020-2021 season.&nbsp;

With the Coronavirus pandemic resurgence in the state, Coach Weber started off by saying he's still hopeful that his team will get a season and that it's been difficult to navigate through the pandemic at times.&nbsp;

"Everyday it's a new challenge," said Weber. "There's so many things involved. Obviously the Covid, the contact tracing,&nbsp; but also the mental health. I think that's a really big factor."

Weber mentioned that with what his team has gone through in terms of sticking out the pandemic and the process of preparing for a season that he just hopes they will get one at all, for the sake of his players and their mental health.

"I'm not sure how many bodies we'll have next Wednesday, but I hope we get to play for their sake," said Weber. "We've had to be resilient, we've had to stay with it, and ups and downs and all arounds and now we're so close to playing, I hope we get an opportunity to play."

The Wildcats are slated to open their season on Wednesday, November 25th against the Drake Bulldogs in the inaugural Little Apple Classic, but with the current conditions surrounding the state of Kansas and the Coronavirus pandemic, even that is still up in the air.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"It's been hard. I will tell you, but I'm trying to keep the faith," said Weber. "I've said many times on these different interviews, 'right now everybody needs hope, everybody needs understanding, everyone needs a purpose, everyone needs love and empathy."

The Wildcats have dealt with a large amount of roster turnover, and navigating that in a traditional year provides challenges, but with the added spice of a global pandemic, it's natural to have even more questions about how a team has molded together when so many new faces are thrown together, but Coach Weber said that of all the facets of the game, defense is his biggest concern to this point.

"I'm not sure about our sustained defense, or our transition defense" said Weber. "We're going to have to do a good job of rotating guys."

There's plenty of uncertainty surrounding the season itself, but the uncertainty on the look of the five on the floor isn't something that's unique to Kansas State. Every other team in the nation has question marks surrounding their program heading into this season, but much of that will be solved next week when the ball gets tipped for the first time.

"I have no idea how we're going to look when we're out there," said Weber. "You don't have exhibition games, you don't have scrimmages, you've been limited with officials, I've been limited with numbers, so again, you just make the best of it."&nbsp;

Much like his coach, Rudi Williams has no idea what he's in for this season either. The junior college transfer is still getting settled in Manhattan, but hasn't had much time to adjust or get comfortable, but he's not alone.

"All the newcomers are coming from different styles of basketball," said Williams. "So we all had different play styles and traditions and stuff we followed as players, but now you come in here and you have to learn different schemes and different types of offenses. So we've all had to learn the K-State style of basketball."&nbsp;

That style of basketball is still being determined ahead of this unprecedented season, but the Wildcats continue pressing on in hopes of tipping off in Bramlage Coliseum on November 25th.&nbsp;

K-State Basketball unsure of its identity ahead of 2020

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– K-State Athletics announced Tuesday (November 17) that the general public will not be permitted to attend men’s and women’s basketball games inside Bramlage Coliseum through the remainder of the month of November. The decision follows that of the University to cancel its commencement ceremonies that were set for Bramlage Coliseum Friday through Sunday.

The decision impacts the Little Apple Classic men’s basketball tournament set for Wednesday and Friday, November 25 and 27, the women’s basketball game with Southern on Sunday, November 29 and the men’s basketball game with Kansas City on Monday, November 30.

“In concert with the University’s decision to cancel graduation ceremonies, this was a prudent decision for us at this time,” said athletics director&nbsp;Gene Taylor.

The restriction only affects indoor events at Bramlage Coliseum and does not include the remaining scheduled home football game with Texas on Saturday, December 5.

K-State Athletics continues to plan for 25 percent capacity at basketball games, which has been approved by Riley County, inside Bramlage Coliseum with designated reserved seating in a socially distanced configuration for the remainder of the season.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–<a>&nbsp;Kansas State senior quarterback&nbsp;Skylar Thompson&nbsp;is one of 20 semifinalists for the fourth-annual Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year award, the award’s committee announced Tuesday.</a>

The award is the first college football honor to focus primarily on a player’s leadership, both on and off the field. Thompson inclusion on the semifinalist list marks the second time a Wildcat has been up for the award as Dalton Risner was one of three finalists for the award in 2018. Thompson is one of two semifinalists from the Big 12 this year, joining Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger.

Despite suffering a season-ending injury in October, Thompson has firmly established himself as one of the team leaders. Thompson is a member of watch lists for the Maxwell and Manning awards, in addition to the Wuerffel Trophy, given to college football’s most active player in the community. Thompson lost both his mom and his grandfather to cancer within seven months of each other when he was a child, and he has used the experience as motivation to be active in the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program.

On the field, Thompson is ranked in the top 10 in 14 different career categories at K-State, while he is just the second player in school history to total 5,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a career. Thompson as engineered five fourth-quarter touchdown drives in his career to either tie or take the lead, which ranks second by a K-State signal caller since 1990. One of those was this season at No. 3 Oklahoma when he threw for a career-high 344 yards to lead the Wildcats to their first road win over a top-five team in school history.

Three finalists will be named for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year award on Wednesday, December 16. The winner will be announced at the award ceremony on February 16, 2021.

Kansas State travels to face No. 17 Iowa State this Saturday, a 3 p.m., game that will be shown on FOX.

The college has said its recruiting is not determined by students’ race or ethnicity and denied it ever instructed coaches to exclude out-of-state athletes from recruitment.

The ACLU alleges in a federal lawsuit filed Thursday that Highland Community College instituted a plan six months ago to reduce the number of black students. It contends the college’s strategy included expelling black students for minor or bogus infractions and singling them out for dorm room and vehicle searches, discriminatory surveillance and harassment.

Filed on behalf of four former and current students, the lawsuit names Eric Ingmire, vice president for student services, and Bryan Dorrel, the college’s athletic director, as defendants. They did not immediately respond to email messages seeking comment.

Highland Community College has more than 3,200 students, 87% of whom are white. During the 2019 season, 104 of the 111 football players were black. The 2020 football recruiting class includes “a significantly lower number” of black athletes, the lawsuit alleges.

The lawsuit alleges Dorrel told coaches to recruit “more local kids” and “less Southern kids.”

In addition to these scheduling adjustments, K-State has announced game times and television designations for six non-conference home games, including ESPNU broadcasting the Wildcats’ first three games.

The Wildcats will tip off the 2020-21 season and the Little Apple Classic with a game against Drake at 1 p.m., CT on November 25 on ESPNU, while Colorado and South Dakota will follow later that day at 7 p.m., CT. Drake and South Dakota will lead off the final day of the tournament on November 27 at 1 p.m., CT, while K-State and Colorado will play later that day at 7:30 p.m., CT on ESPNU.

South Dakota replaces South Dakota State in the Little Apple, as the Jackrabbits withdrew from the tournament to participate in the Crossover Classic in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. K-State will play Kansas City at 7 p.m., CT on Monday, November 30 on ESPNU, while three other home games will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. The KSHSAA stated that they maintain a very strong relationship with the staff of Topeka Hummer Sports Park and Topeka Public Schools, and while they would be very confident in playing there as originally scheduled, the local restrictions would have made it very challenging to have cheer, band, and spectators be part of the event.&nbsp;While limitations exist in Hutchinson (and qualifying school leaders will learn specifics in the days ahead), the opportunity for student and community support is increased in Hutchinson. They plan to return to Hummer as soon as the environment allows.&nbsp;

High School football playoff scores

Taylor Briggs of Chapman High School has signed a letter of intent&nbsp; with the Iowa State Cyclones Cross Country / Track and Field team. 

Chapman High School Athletic Director Clint Merritt noted that Taylor capped off an amazing high school season by winning her fourth consecutive 4A State Championship in Cross Country. She looks to finish a stellar career this spring competing in track and field for the Irish. 

Taylor is joined on stage by her family, Hayley (sister), Amy (mother), Taylor, and Brian (father).

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–<a>&nbsp;Kansas State junior&nbsp;Wyatt Hubert&nbsp;is one of 25 players in the nation – including three from the Big 12 – to be named to the initial watch list for the 2020 Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award, the Ted Hendricks Foundation announced Thursday.</a>

It is the second-straight year Hubert has been named a candidate for the award, while the Wildcats have now had at least one player up for the award in eight of the last nine seasons. K-State’s candidates during that stretch include Meshak Williams (2012), Ryan Mueller (2013 and 2014), Jordan Willis (2016) and Reggie Walker (2017, 2018 and 2019).

A product of Topeka, Kansas, Hubert is tied for the Big 12 lead and ninth nationally in total sacks with 5.5, while he has 8.5 tackles for loss to rank third in the league and tie for 16th&nbsp;in the nation. His totals were given a boost last week against Oklahoma State when he set career highs with 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. His sack total was the most by a Wildcat since Willis has 3.5 against Louisiana Tech in 2015, and it was the most in Big 12 play since Mueller had 3.0 against Texas Tech in 2013.

Hubert has amassed 17.0 career tackles, which ranks first nationally among non-seniors and is one sack shy of tying for 10th&nbsp;in K-State history. He ranks seventh nationally among all active players in career sacks per game (0.55) and 13th&nbsp;in career tackles for loss per game (0.95).

K-State's Hubert named to Hendricks Award Watch List

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State head coach&nbsp;Bruce Weber&nbsp;announced the signing of Wisconsin prep standout&nbsp;Logan Landers&nbsp;(Cedarburg, Wisconsin/Cedarburg)&nbsp;to a National Letter of Intent on the first day of the Fall National Signing Period on Wednesday (November 11).

A 6-foot-10, 230-pound center, Landers is considered one of the top high school players in the state of Wisconsin as he enters his senior season at Cedarburg High School, which currently ranks No. 8 in the preseason poll of Division 2 schools. He is rated as the 30th-best center in the country as well as the fifth-best player in Wisconsin by 247Sports. He is a consensus 3-star prospect by both 247Sports and Rivals. In addition, he is a highly-regarded baseball pitching prospect who had a career 1.94 ERA in high school.

“Obviously, we are really excited to welcome Logan and his family to K-State,” said Weber. “One of our main areas of focus in this recruiting period was getting another skilled big man – one that can give us some different options, alongside (sophomore transfer) Kaosi (Ezeagu), (freshman) Davion (Bradford) and (sophomore tranfer) Carlton (Linguard, Jr.). Logan is a very, very skilled player. He is a good passer and can do a lot of things with the basketball. He has really developed into a very good 3-pointer shooter, which will give us even more versatility on the court.”

Landers transferred to Cedarburg in the Spring of 2020 after three standout seasons (2017-20) at Brookfield Academy in Brookfield, Wisconsin, helping the Blue Knights to a 56-18 (.757) overall record and two appearances in the WIAA Regional Final (2018, 2020). He scored more than 1,000 points (1,082) in his career on 50 percent shooting (417-of-834) and averaged a near double-double (14.8 ppg., 9.4 rpg.) in 73 games played.

In addition, Landers collected 28 double-double (points-rebounds) in his career at Brookfield Academy, including 18 as a sophomore in 2018-19. He also had 14 games of at least 20 points, including a career-high 32 points against powerhouse Milwaukee King in the first game of the 2019-20 season.

Landers is a three-time Second Team All-Midwest Classic Conference selection (2018, 2019, 2020), while he was an honorable mention pick to the&nbsp;Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel&nbsp;All-Area team in 2019.

“In my heart, it was K-State,” said Landers. “I need to follow what I want to do in my heart. K-State is an elite top-level school, and they are in my heart, so that’s the school that I want to be and where I want to win.

“College is going to be grind no matter where you go, whether you are playing Division I sports or not. The guys (at K-State) are going to be there for you – they are great teammates – and you have a great coaching staff, so I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity. There is ‘no lose’ in this situation. I just had to get on to this opportunity while I had the chance.”

As a junior in 2019-20, Landers led Brookfield Academy to the WIAA Regional Final, where they lost to The Prairie School, 76-71, on March 7 to finish the season with a 16-8 record. He averaged 18.8 points on 46.1 percent shooting (166-of-360), including 35.8 percent (49-of-137) from 3-point range, with a team-best 9.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 24 games played. He posted nine double-doubles on the season to go with nine games of 20 or more points, including a 26-point, 14-rebound, 5-assist performance against The Prairie School in the Regional Final.

His junior season came on the heels of stellar sophomore season in 2018-19, in which, he averaged a double-double in helping the Blue Knights to a 20-6 overall record. He averaged 14.2 points on 48.1 percent shooting (143-of-297) with a team-best 12.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.1 blocks in 25 games played. His 12.5 rebounds per game ranked 10th&nbsp;in the state. He collected 18 double-doubles on the season and had four games of 20 or more points.

Among his biggest games as a sophomore was a season-high 29-point effort on 13-of-18 shooting against HOPE Christian on February 15, 2019 that came with 15 rebounds, along with an all-around effort of 13 points, 16 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists against conference champion St. John’s NW on February 2, 2019.

“The thing that I want to develop the most (in college) is that ruthless mindset of grabbing every single rebound that I can and when I get it in the post just being an absolute bully,” said Landers. “I want to do all the stuff that most people don’t like to do. I want to get the rebounds. I want to do the dirty stuff that a lot of people don’t like to do that will make me a better player and a better teammate to help us win games.”

Landers continued his development on the basketball court during the Summer of 2020 when he played for one of the top AAU programs in the country in Phenom Team Herro EYBL led by head coach&nbsp;Antonio Curro. He played in several events for Phenom, including the NY2LA Sports Grassroots Showdown Series in August and the Grassroots Showcase in September. His Phenom team included some of the top players in the country, including fellow Big 12 signee&nbsp;Tyrese Hunter&nbsp;of Iowa State.

“We recruit all across the country and (associate head coach)&nbsp;Chris Lowery&nbsp;got a call from Coach (Antonio) Curro telling us about Logan,” said Weber. “Logan played for Coach Curro’s Phenom squad, which is one of the most talented AAU teams in the country, and that experience has helped continue his development as a basketball player. Logan ended up being one of our first (recruiting) Zoom calls this Spring and we really think he is great fit for our team and what we continue to build here at K-State.”

In addition to his basketball abilities, Landers is also a talented baseball pitcher, posting a career 1.94 ERA in 68.2 innings pitched with 83 strikeouts in his two seasons (2017-19) at Brookfield Academy. He also had a career .505 batting average in 34 games played with the Blue Knights with 42 RBI, 25 runs scored, nine doubles, two triples and four home runs.

“He is a highly-regarded baseball pitcher and many thought he would go to college for baseball before his development into a standout basketball player,” said Weber. “His background as a pitcher has given him great hand-eye coordinator that you don’t see in a lot of basketball players, especially big men.”

In his latest prep season in 2018-19, he collected a 4-3 record in 11 appearances on the mound with 64 strikeouts and 26 walks while tallying a 1.87 ERA. He hit .462 as a sophomore in 19 games with 21 RBI, 10 runs scored, five doubles, two triples and four home runs. He missed his entire junior season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Landers is expected to debut with his new Cedarburg team on the basketball court in early January 2021.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State will travel to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Friday, December 11 to take on the Butler Bulldogs as part of the second edition of the Big 12/BIG EAST Battle, the schools announced on Thursday (November 5).

The game will be one of 10 contested between the two conferences for the second consecutive season with both ESPN and FOX providing coverage of all games on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or FS1. The games will be staggered across various dates with times and complete television information being released at a later date.

“Butler is a terrific addition to our 2020-21 schedule in the Big 12/BIG EAST Battle,” said head coach&nbsp;Bruce Weber. “They have a program with great history and tradition and return significant experience from a team that would’ve advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. Obviously, it’s a very challenging first road game, but looking forward to our team experiencing such a historic venue like Hinkle Fieldhouse.”

This will be just second meeting between the programs and the first since Butler knocked off K-State, 63-56, in the NCAA West Regional Final in Salt Lake City to advance to the 2010 Final Four. It will be the first-ever visit to venerable Hinkle Fieldhouse, which is one of the oldest college basketball arenas still in use opening in 1928.

Led by fourth-year head coach&nbsp;LaVall Jordan, the Bulldogs return seven players from a squad that posted a 22-9 overall record, including a 10-8 mark in BIG EAST play, and were expected to receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament before the rest of the 2019-20 season was canceled due to COV-19.

Although the Bulldogs lost All-BIG EAST First Team selection and leading scorer&nbsp;Kamar Baldwin&nbsp;(16.2 ppg.), they return three players (Bryce Nze,&nbsp;Bryce Golden&nbsp;and&nbsp;Aaron Thompson) with significant experience in 2020-21, including Nze and Golden who started all 31 games a year ago. The 6-foot-7 Nze led the team in both rebounding (6.6 rpg.) and blocked shots (0.7 bpg.) while averaging 9.2 points on a team-best 62.9 field goal percentage. Thompson ranked fourth in the BIG EAST with a team-leading 4.7 assists per game average to go with 7.2 points per game and Golden was fifth in scoring (7.9 ppg.) on better than 50 percent shooting.

K-State is 24-25 all-time against BIG EAST teams, including 4-15 on the road. The Wildcats lost to Marquette, 73-65, at home on Dec. 7, 2019 in the inaugural Big 12/BIG EAST Battle, which was the second game in a home-and-home series between the schools. The last win against a BIG EAST foe came against Creighton in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament on March 16 in Charlotte.

K-State recently announced its 2020-21 schedule, which includes 17 home games, beginning with the inaugural Little Apple Classic that will tip off the season on Wednesday and Friday, November 25 and 27.

The athletics department is planning for 25 percent capacity inside Bramlage Coliseum with designated reserved seating in a socially distanced configuration. Current season ticket holders will have the option of purchasing reserved season tickets that will be designated by specific chairbacks or Cat Cushions in groups of twos and fours throughout Sections 1-20 and 25-27.

Born on August 22, 1930 in Mitchell, South Dakota, Iverson played three seasons (1949-52) for Hall of Fame head coach&nbsp;Jack Gardner, leading the Wildcats during one of their greatest periods of success that included a near 80 percent winning percentage (61-16/.792), an appearance in the 1951 NCAA Championship game and a pair of Big Seven Conference titles (1950, 1951).

Iverson was a regular starter on the Wildcat team that posted a 25-4 record and lost to Kentucky in the 1951 NCAA Championship, averaging 8.9 points on 39 percent shooting in 29 games played. As a senior, he was the captain of the 1951-52 squad that posted a 19-5 record and lost just twice in Big Seven play en route to finishing No. 3 in The Associated Press poll. He averaged 12.9 points per game as a senior, just behind All-American&nbsp;Dick Knostman.

For his playing career, Iverson averaged 8.4 points on nearly 40 percent shooting and 75 percent shooting from the free throw line in 75 games played.

Upon graduating, Iverson was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the 1952 NBA Draft. Following a stint in Japan to fulfill his military obligations, he returned to Manhattan where he met and married his wife,&nbsp;Joan Chilson, while earning his Master’s degree in secondary school administration in 1956.

Iverson was hired as the men’s basketball coach at South Dakota State in 1956, guiding the Jackrabbits to 142 wins in nine season that included five North Central Conference championships, three regional championships and one national championship in the 1963 NCAA College Division Tournament. He was selected as the National College Division Coach of the Year in 1963.

Upon leaving the coaching profession, Iverson moved into the private sector, working for the National Bank of South Dakota (US Bank), Valley Bank and Heart Hospital of South Dakota, before retiring in 2005.

Iverson is survived by his sister,&nbsp;Elaine Walsh, his daughter,&nbsp;Nancy (Bob) Schantz, grandchildren&nbsp;Christina (Dan) Loomis,&nbsp;Katie Schantz&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jimmy Schantz&nbsp;and two great granddaughters,&nbsp;Olivia&nbsp;and&nbsp;Grace Loomis. He was preceded in death by his parents (Melvin&nbsp;and&nbsp;Naomi Iverson), brother,&nbsp;Mervin Iverson, his wife, Joan Chilson Iverson, and his son,&nbsp;Paul Iverson.

K-state mourns the passing of Jim Iverson

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;<a>Kansas State’s November 7 football game against Oklahoma State will kick off at 3 p.m. and be televised by FOX as the Big 12 Conference and its television partners finalized this coming weekend’s schedule Saturday night.</a>

It will be the fourth time in K-State’s seven games so far this season that the Wildcats will be featured on FOX.

The Wildcats and Cowboys enter the game with just one conference loss as K-State is 4-1 in Big 12 play and Oklahoma State is 3-1.

 </figure>MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;<a>Kansas State’s November 7 football game against Oklahoma State will kick off at 3 p.m. and be televised by FOX as the Big 12 Conference and its television partners finalized this coming weekend’s schedule Saturday night.</a>It will be the fourth time in K-State’s seven games so far this season that the Wildcats will be featured on FOX.The Wildcats and Cowboys enter the game with just one conference loss as K-State is 4-1 in Big 12 play and Oklahoma State is 3-1.
