MANHATTAN, Kan. — Following Kansas State's historic loss to Fort Hays State on Tuesday, many were unsure how Bruce Weber and the Wildcats would respond.&nbsp;

After falling behind 7-0 in the opening minutes, K-State would hit their stride, opening up a 14-0 run to claim an early advantage that they would ride all the way to halftime.&nbsp;

A big part of that first half lead was freshman Selton Miguel, who hadn't scored more than 10 points in a game in the first five contests, lead the team in scoring with 12 points in the opening stanza.&nbsp;

In the second period, Milwaukee would force a rally of their own, battling back from multiple K-State leads. K-State would hold a seven point advantage with 40 seconds remaining, but it wasn't over yet.

On a night where the young Wildcats relied heavily on their newcomers and freshmen, it would be a freshman mistake that nearly cost them a victory.&nbsp;

Nijel Pack, who finished the contest with an impressive stat line of 12 points, six rebounds and five assists, would go to the free throw line with less than two seconds to go. After missing the first shot, Pack would intentionally miss the second shot to try and run off the final seconds, but the shot wouldn't draw iron, allowing Milwaukee an inbound pass and a last ditch effort at pulling off the upset.&nbsp;

The long inbound pass would be intercepted by Mike McGuirl and the Wildcats would snap their two-game losing streak and escape with a 76-75 win over the Panthers.&nbsp;

Kansas State will be back in action again on Tuesday night in Ames, Iowa to open Big 12 play against the Iowa State Cyclones.

K-State holds off Milwaukee

Effective Thursday, December 10 through January 28, 2021, interscholastic activities at USD 378 Riley County will allow for attendance of up to two parents/guardians per participant(s) family.

There will be a suggested donation of $5 for High School events and $3 for Middle School events.

A list of each participant’s parents/guardians will be located at the North Gym entrance.&nbsp; Parents/Guardians must wear a mask and check in with the gate worker before entering the gyms.

KSHSAA Interpretations/clarifications on spectator rule:

No participant’s family will be allowed more than two parents/guardians to attend impacted KSHSAA activities.

No “substitutes” for a participant's parent/guardian if they are unable to attend the contest.

All spectators must be masked the entire time in the facility, even if they are socially distanced.

Parents/guardians are there to support their child while in competition; therefore we ask parents/guardians whose child’s competition has concluded to exit the facility&nbsp;

The impacted interscholastic activities include basketball, bowling, debate, forensics/speech, scholars bowl, swimming &amp; diving, and wrestling.

The Big 12 Conference determined the game will not be re-scheduled and has declared it “no contest”.

“I am very disappointed our team won’t get another chance to compete this season, but unfortunately that is out of our control,” said Head Coach Les Miles. “Our team played very hard last week on the road, and I know they were eager to get back on the field to face a very good Texas team this weekend. With our season complete, I would be remiss not to recognize our student-athletes and staff for diligently following the medical guidelines set for them this year. I am very proud of their efforts and proud to be the head coach of this football team. Rock Chalk, Jayhawk.”

K-State Partners with Opendorse to Assist Student-Athletes with NIL 

TOPEKA, Kan. -&nbsp;Five individuals have been selected for induction into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame Class of 2021. Awards will be presented during 2021 in conjunction with a KSHSAA-sponsored state function/ championship, or locally at the inductee's request. The time and location of each induction ceremony will be announced at a later date at&nbsp;www.kshsaa.org.

The Class of 2021 Hall of Fame inductees include:

Coach Shane Cordell’s record as a high school football and girls basketball coach at his alma mater speaks for itself. In 29 years as the high school football coach he compiled a record of 204-94 (.685) and played in the state championship game seven times, bringing home three titles (1981-1A, 1996 and 1999 – 8-Man 1A DI). He was the first Kansas coach to play for and then coach a state championship at his alma mater. His 34 years with the girls basketball program posted a record of 604-225 (.729). The Redskins captured four straight Class 1A state titles (1995-1998). Along the way they had three undefeated seasons and a 91-game winning streak. The basketball court at Little River HS is named after Cordell. As a coach and educator he has had a lasting impact on students and the community of Little River.

GARY MUSSELMAN, SILVER LAKE – ADMINISTRATOR

Gary Musselman served Kansas students and the membership of the Kansas State High School Activities Association for 30 years – eight years as an Assistant Director and 22 years as the Executive Director (the longest in Association history). During his tenure some of the initiatives implemented&nbsp; include – Student Advisory Team; Officials Recognition Program; Sports Medicine Advisory Committee; League Commissioners Summit; Officials Advisory Committee; Game Day Spirit Showcase Competition; Spirit of Sports and Heart of the Arts; Interscholastic Bowling. Musselman served on the NFHS Board of Directors and was president of the NFHS in 2016-2017. Prior to his work at the KSHSAA Musselman was a teacher and coach at Independence HS, Andover HS, Beloit HS, Halstead HS and principal (1987- 1988) at La Crosse HS.

Van Rose is one of the most iconic, yet humble coaches to impact generations of athletes in the state of Kansas. His name is synonymous with Shawnee Mission Northwest HS Cross Country and Success. Coach Rose began his 48-year coaching stint at Northwest HS when it opened in 1969 and his athletes have dominated Class 6A. The girls team won 13 state championships; in the 90s they won six of ten titles and overall placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd 21 times. The boys team captured 21 6A titles, more than any school in Kansas and 12th overall in the U.S. From 1994-2007, they earned 14 state titles in a row, the 5th longest streak in the country, and placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd 30 times in school history. Add to this 25 boys and 14 girls Sunflower League titles. He has received numerous cross country Coach of the Year honors.

JACQUE (STRUCKHOFF) STEDMAN – STUDENT (GRINNELL HS, 1980-1983)

In the early 1980s the Grinnell Lady Warriors captured several state titles with Jacque Struckhoff playing a key role: volleyball - 1A state champions in 1982 and 1983, placing 3rd in 1981; basketball – 1A state runner-up in 1982 and 3rd place in 1983; track &amp; field – 1A state champions in 1980, 1982, 1983 and runner-up in 1981. During her senior year she was named to the All-Tournament team at state basketball, averaging 11 points and 12 rebounds per game, and she won three gold medals on the track (800m, 1600m and 3200m relays). Jacque was a remarkable example of not only a student-athlete but also an all-around student, participating in band, pep club, Student Council, Scholars Bowl, Math &amp; Science Relays and graduating with a 4.0 GPA. She participated on KSU track and cross country teams and in 1988 ran in the 10,000m run at the Olympic Trials.

To say that Centralia HS and Coach Kim Tennal dominated Class 1A volleyball is putting it mildly. During 19 years at Centralia HS, Tennal and her Lady Panther volleyball team posted a record of 582-47 (.926), and made 17 state tournament appearances, winning nine Class 1A state titles with a state record of eight in a row (1997-2004). During this span the team posted an amazing record of 311-11 (.966). They had three undefeated seasons (1997, 1999, 2000) and posted a winning streak of 126 matches. Prior to and after her time at Centralia, she coached at three different high schools and took all to the state tournament. Her overall high school volleyball record is 788-145 (.845). Coach Kim Tennal attacked each day with such conviction and enthusiasm that as an individual, a school and a community you couldn’t help but be impacted by her positive spirit.

FIVE SELECTED FOR CLASS OF 2021TOPEKA, Kan. -&nbsp;Five individuals have been selected for induction into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame Class of 2021. Awards will be presented during 2021 in conjunction with a KSHSAA-sponsored state function/ championship, or locally at the inductee's request. The time and location of each induction ceremony will be announced at a later date at&nbsp;www.kshsaa.org.The Class of 2021 Hall of Fame inductees include:SHANE CORDELL, LITTLE RIVER – FACULTYCoach Shane Cordell’s record as a high school football and girls basketball coach at his alma mater speaks for itself. In 29 years as the high school football coach he compiled a record of 204-94 (.685) and played in the state championship game seven times, bringing home three titles (1981-1A, 1996 and 1999 – 8-Man 1A DI). He was the first Kansas coach to play for and then coach a state championship at his alma mater. His 34 years with the girls basketball program posted a record of 604-225 (.729). The Redskins captured four straight Class 1A state titles (1995-1998). Along the way they had three undefeated seasons and a 91-game winning streak. The basketball court at Little River HS is named after Cordell. As a coach and educator he has had a lasting impact on students and the community of Little River.GARY MUSSELMAN, SILVER LAKE – ADMINISTRATORGary Musselman served Kansas students and the membership of the Kansas State High School Activities Association for 30 years – eight years as an Assistant Director and 22 years as the Executive Director (the longest in Association history). During his tenure some of the initiatives implemented&nbsp; include – Student Advisory Team; Officials Recognition Program; Sports Medicine Advisory Committee; League Commissioners Summit; Officials Advisory Committee; Game Day Spirit Showcase Competition; Spirit of Sports and Heart of the Arts; Interscholastic Bowling. Musselman served on the NFHS Board of Directors and was president of the NFHS in 2016-2017. Prior to his work at the KSHSAA Musselman was a teacher and coach at Independence HS, Andover HS, Beloit HS, Halstead HS and principal (1987- 1988) at La Crosse HS.VAN ROSE, SHAWNEE – FACULTYVan Rose is one of the most iconic, yet humble coaches to impact generations of athletes in the state of Kansas. His name is synonymous with Shawnee Mission Northwest HS Cross Country and Success. Coach Rose began his 48-year coaching stint at Northwest HS when it opened in 1969 and his athletes have dominated Class 6A. The girls team won 13 state championships; in the 90s they won six of ten titles and overall placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd 21 times. &nbsp; The Riley County Health Department (RCHD) will adopt the new 10-day quarantine guidelines proposed by CDC and KDHE effective Thursday, December 10, 2020. The new guidelines state quarantine can end after day 10 if the patient has no symptoms of COVID-19. Riley County will not adopt the alternate 7-day quarantine option at this time. Patients currently in quarantine may end their quarantine period after day 10 if they do not develop symptoms. Contact tracing staff will reach out to patients directly to share information about the new guidelines. “To reduce the personal burden on patients and gain more compliance with quarantine, we will adopt the new 10-day alternative,” said Local Health Officer Julie Gibbs. “Symptoms may appear after day 10, but the likelihood decreases significantly. RCHD continues to recommend a quarantine period of 14 days for anyone exposed to COVID-19 if they have the ability to do so.” According to CDC, with the 10-day strategy, residual post-quarantine transmission risk is estimated to be about 1% with an upper limit of about 10%.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The 34-year-old Santana was an All-Star two years ago in Cleveland, when he hit a career-best .281 with 34 homers and 93 RBIs. But he slid to .199 with eight homers and 30 RBIs while playing 60 games during the shortened 2020 season, resulting in the Indians declining his $17.5 million option for the upcoming season.

Royals sign Carlos Santana 

TOPEKA, Kan. -&nbsp;&nbsp;Kaye B. Pearce,&nbsp;former Executive Director of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, who served 20 years with the association, passed away Dec. 6 at his home in Bella Vista, AR, at the age of 85.

For 39 years Kaye Pearce devoted his life to the kids of Kansas as a teacher, coach, athletic director and member of the KSHSAA staff. &nbsp;His years as a coach and as a member of the KSHSAA staff earned him an enviable reputation as an excellent leader who truly cared about his profession, those he was privileged to work with and the students in the state of Kansas. Pearce joined the staff of the Kansas State High School Activities Association in 1976 as an Administrative Assistant. In 1989 he was named the Associate Director and from 1993-1996 he served as the Executive Director. While a member of the KSHSAA staff Pearce was the administrator for numerous activities, perhaps most notably football, basketball and track and field. &nbsp; Professional positions included: NFHS Football Rules Committee for 20 years, serving as the chair the last four years; two terms on the NFHS Track &amp; Field Rules Committee; Board of Directors for the Sunflower State Games; and Kansas Wesleyan University (Salina, KS) Board of Trustees.

For many years following&nbsp; his retirement in 1996, he served as the KSHSAA State Track and Field Meet referee.

A native of Salina, Pearce began his career at his alma mater, spending nine year as a teacher and coach. When Salina added another high school he remained at Central High School for ten years as the athletic director, match teacher, football and track coach. During his 19 seasons as a football coach for the Mustangs from 1957-1975, the last 16 he served as the program's head coach. He had a record of 91-48-4 (.654).&nbsp; From 1960-1968, before the start of high school playoffs in Kansas, his teams never won less than six games when the maximum number played was nine.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State’s men’s basketball has added a home game with Division II foe Fort Hays State for Tuesday, December 8 at 7 p.m., CT. The game will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

There are no single-game tickets for the contest, as K-State Athletics is limited to 15 percent capacity at Bramlage Coliseum, which will be filled by season-ticket holders.

The Tigers (0-3) have dropped their first three games of the season against Washburn (80-78), Emporia State (68-66) and Nebraska-Kearney (84-80).

This will be the first regular-season meeting between K-State and FHSU since 2009 with the previous 4 regular-season meetings coming between 1936 and 1947. The Wildcats and Tigers have met 3 times in exhibition play in last 10 years, including 2011, 2015 and 2017.

The game replaces the road contest with Butler in the Big 12/Big East Battle that was originally scheduled for Saturday, December 11 but has since been cancelled due to COVID-19 related issues with the Butler team.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Senior Day inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium felt abnormal for a multitude of reasons in 2020. From the 25% capacity crowd, to no band in attendance, to K-State’s first Senior Day loss in 6 years, things just didn’t go the Wildcats’ way.&nbsp;

Kansas State went three-and-out on the game’s first possession and Texas took the ball and ultimately went 81 yards on just seven plays to grab a quick 7-0 lead. Texas would then pounce on the Cats and add a field goal and another touchdown before the end of the first period, taking a commanding 17-0 lead.&nbsp;

“Well, we couldn’t stop them,” said Kansas State Head Coach Chris Klieman. “We ran out of players. We didn’t have Eli Sullivan after play three, didn’t have J-Mac in the second half, the next guy up has got to step up, and we need to be better.”

K-State’s own mistakes surely aided Texas in their quick start, missing a field goal and throwing an interception deep inside their own territory, but the Wildcats wouldn’t quit.&nbsp;

Freshman Deuce Vaughn would break out some of his trademark moves and burst for a 19-yard touchdown run to get K-State on the board with 54 seconds left in the first quarter.&nbsp;

“I know how special he is, and I feel like at this point nothing he does surprises me,” said K-State Quarterback Will Howard on his running back. “He’s an incredibly mature kid and an awesome teammate to be with.”

Texas would waste no time getting those points back, though. On the first play of the second period, Bijan Robsinson would break a tackle and run 30 yards for the score, stretching the Longhorn lead back out to 24-7.&nbsp;

On the next drive, K-State would use two big plays from Deuce Vaughn again, one being a 22-yard run off the right side placing him atop the K-State record books with the most all-purpose yards as a freshman in program history.&nbsp;

“We have a running back for sure for the next three years or however long Deuce is going to be here because he’s an impact guy,” said Klieman. “He can catch the ball, he can run the ball, he gets tough yards, he does everything. We just have to have more guys step up, both sides of the ball, like Deuce.”

The Cats’ drive; however, would stall, but Blake Lynch would drive in a kick from 47 yards out and get K-State back within two scores with 11:40 left in the half. Then, Texas would again drive down the field at will, stretching the lead to 31-10 on a Roschon Johnson touchdown run with 8:17 left in the half.&nbsp;

It would be the first time all season K-State would allow four rushing touchdowns, and Texas managed it before halftime.

On the first play of the next drive, K-State would botch a read option exchange, giving Texas great field position at the 16 yard line.&nbsp;

The game would come to a halt shortly thereafter, as Texas Center Derek Kerstetter suffered a severe leg injury and had to be carted off.&nbsp;

It’s impossible not to mention what an injury like Kerstetter’s can do for a team’s momentum, especially in this case. Texas would come back after a lengthy delay, throw an incomplete pass, and ultimately miss a 30-yard field goal to keep K-State in the game.

Kansas State took advantage of the opportunity, driving 80 yards on 12 plays, in 5 minutes and 10 seconds, capped off by Deuce Vaughn’s second rushing touchdown of the game. It brought K-State back within 14 points with just over a minute left in the half.

“I was really pleased with our offense. We turned the ball over, which we can’t do, but when we didn’t turn it over, we really moved the ball at will,” said Klieman on his team's resolve to end the first half. “We were able to run it, we were able to throw it, we had them off balance. I thought Mess did a great job of play calling, and as poorly as we played, it’s 31-17 at half.”

After being out-gained 268-229, and turning the ball over twice, K-State managed to keep themselves in the contest at the break.&nbsp;

In the half, Texas had seven possessions, scoring on the first five, but missing a field goal and going three and out to end the half helped keep K-State’s hopes alive.

On the first play of the second half, Texas Quarterback Sam Ehlinger threw a pass that was deflected by Will Jones, causing thoughts to stir about a potential comeback for the Wildcats, but the next play, Bijan Robinson took a carry into a pile of humans, burst out the other side and ran 75 yards for a touchdown, regaining all momentum K-State had thought they may have.&nbsp;

Somehow, K-State shook off that Longhorn blow and returned the favor just three minutes later. Will Howard would find Malik Knowles over the middle for a seven yard touchdown, Howard’s seventh touchdown pass of the season. The feat would also put him atop the K-State freshman record books with the most touchdown passes as a freshman in school history, passing Josh Freeman.

But again, Texas would respond. This time, D’Shawn Jamison would return the ensuing kickoff all the way to the K-State one. Roschon Johnson would punch it in on the next play, pushing Texas’s lead to 45-24.&nbsp;

When asked about his team’s tackling struggles, Klieman stated he didn’t believe it was due to lack of effort.

“It's a poor cup, poor leverage, not strong enough, not physical enough, not heavy enough,” he said.

Kansas State refused to quit, scoring on the next possession to again bring themselves back within 14 points. Howard would again connect with Malik Knowles, this time from 29 yards away.

“Having him out for a couple games wasn’t ideal, but he’s a heck of a receiver and a really good football player for us,” said Howard on Malik Knowles. “So continuing to work with him and all the receivers that we have will be really important for me and for our whole offense.”

Six plays, 75 yards and two minutes later? Texas scored again. A reverse to Jor Whittington for 15 yards, The score would be the most points surrendered by K-State this season, and with stil 7:01 left in the third quarter.

The score from Whittington marked yet another record secured in the game, this time in a negative way.&nbsp;

Kansas State surrendered seven rushing touchdowns in the game, its most ever allowed in a single contest in program history.&nbsp;

The onslaught would continue five minutes later when Sam Ehlinger would register his first passing touchdown of the game on what was initially ruled a lateral. After review, it was confirmed that his shovel pass to Cade Brewer was a legal forward pass and Brewer would tightrope the sideline for a 15 yard score.&nbsp;

Will Howard would shortly thereafter throw his second interception of the game, setting Texas up with outstanding field position again. One play later, Ehlinger would find Malcolm Epps for a 32 yard touchdown.&nbsp;

The score would bring UT’s total to 66 points, marking the first time K-State has surrendered 60 or more points since playing Texas Tech in 2009. It was the first time K-State has given up 60 or more at home since a 1984 loss to Missouri. And if that’s not enough milestones for you, it also gave Texas their most points ever scored against Kansas State in series history, breaking the record of 64 from 1942.&nbsp;

Again, all of these records had been broken with still a minute to play in the third quarter.

Texas would tack on a field goal midway through the game’s final quarter, but the damage had already been done.&nbsp;

“I’m disappointed in the loss, disappointed with the outcome, not disappointed in the resolve&nbsp; and effort of our players,” said Klieman. “I’m not disappointed in the fact that we played 10 football games this year when not many people did play that many games and for our guys to battle with all the adversity that they faced.”

The Longhorns would walk out of Manhattan with a convincing 69-31 victory. Their sixth win of the season, bringing their league record to 5-3 and keeping their longshot Big 12 title game aspirations intact for now.&nbsp;

Kansas State would end their season at 4-6, falling in their final five contests of the season. With plenty of young talent, there is cause for a lot of optimism around Chris Klieman and the Wildcats, but the blowout loss to Texas certainly will leave a sour taste in the mouths of many Kansas State fans for the next 273 days until K-State opens their 2021 campaign up against Stanford.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Dre’Una Edwards scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and No. 11 Kentucky closed the game with an 11-0 run for a 60-49 win over Kansas State in the SEC-Big 12 Challenge.

The game marked the return of All-American Rhyne Howard, who was suspended for the first two games of Kentucky’s season. Kentucky starting forward Tatyana Wyatt missed her final game because of suspension. 

Five different players scored down the stretch for Kentucky while Kansas State missed its last five shots and two free throws and had a turnover. Christianna Carr had 15 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and Rachel Ranke 12 for Kansas State.

The football coach at the center of the death of a 19-year-old player
 at Garden City Community College in 2018 was fired Wednesday 
from his new job at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.

"Jeff Sims, head football coach, has been relieved of his duties," Director of Athletics Jared Bruggeman said in a statement.

Sims
 was 2-9 with the Lions in 2019, and games this year were postponed due 
to the pandemic. He still had two years left on his contract. But the 
university refuses to say whether Sims was fired for cause or without 
cause. If MSSU decided to just release Sims, the school would owe him 
$90,000, according to the contract he signed in November 2018. But, if 
he was fired for cause, the university would not owe him.

When 
KCUR asked if Sims would be paid, MSSU Director of News Services &amp; 
Messaging, Mike Olmstead, responded with a statement that read, in part,
 "The details of him being relieved of his duties cannot be discussed as
 they represent an ongoing personnel situation." 

Olmstead did not elaborate on why Sims' firing is an "ongoing personnel situation."

Braeden Bradforth, the teenager from Neptune, New Jersey, died of exertional heatstroke <a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2019-02-17/monday-in-jersey-tuesday-in-garden-city-wednesday-dead-after-a-football-practice-in-kansas" target="_blank">after a grueling Sims-led workout on a hot August day in Garden City. </a>An investigation paid for by GCCC a year after Bradforth's death blamed <a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2019-11-14/investigation-into-kansas-football-players-death-blames-the-coach-athletic-director" target="_blank"> "a striking lack of leadership" by top college officials, including Sims.</a>

Earlier
 this year the family settled with the college for $500,000, the maximum
 allowed under Kansas law because Sims and other GCCC officials were 
protected by qualified immunity.

"We may never know whether 
Braeden’s death played a role in Missouri Southern‘s decision to end 
their relationship with Sims," said family lawyer Jill Greene. "But one 
can only hope that it was a factor."

Sims seemed confused by his firing.
