MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;<a>Kansas State defensive linemen&nbsp;Wyatt Hubert&nbsp;and&nbsp;Drew Wiley, in addition to running back&nbsp;Deuce Vaughn, have been named to the Associated Press All-Big 12 teams, the organization announced Thursday.</a>

Hubert was named to the first team by the AP for a second-straight year, while Wiley and Vaughn were each second-team performers. Vaughn was listed twice on the second team, both as a running back and as an all-purpose player. He is one of just three Wildcat since 2013 to be named an All-Big 12 performer by the Associated Press at two positions in the same season, joining Tyler Lockett (2013 and 2014) and D.J. Reed (2017).

A product of Topeka, Kansas, Hubert is ranked third in the Big 12 and 16th&nbsp;nationally with 8.5 sacks, while he is fifth in the league in tackles for loss with 13.0. Having declared for the NFL Draft, Hubert finished his time in Manhattan tied for eighth in school history in career sacks with 20.0.

A first-time starter in 2020, Wiley put together his best season as a Wildcat with 24 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. A senior, Wiley is tied for 10th&nbsp;in the Big 12 in sacks and 13th&nbsp;in tackles for loss. His totals behind the line were the most by a Wildcat interior defensive lineman since 2017.

A native of Round Rock, Texas, Vaughn set four K-State freshman records, including rushing yards (642) and all-purpose yards (1,221) as he is third in the Big 12 in both categories. He is one of just two players in the nation to tally at least 600 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards this season, the other being Clemson senior running back Travis Etienne.

Joining Vaughn on this year’s list is Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler, Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall, Notre Dame running back Kyren Williams, Alabama linebacker Will Anderson Jr., Northwestern defensive back Brandon Joseph and LSU defensive back Eli Ricks.

Vaughn, a product of Round Rock, Texas, burst onto the scene in 2020 as he reset four K-State freshman marks, including rushing yards (642) and all-purpose yards (1,221). He ranks second nationally among freshmen in all-purpose yards and yards from scrimmage (1,076).

K-State's Vaughn named semifinalist for FWAA Freshman of the Year

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Game times and television designations for the remainder of Kansas State’s Big 12 men’s basketball schedule have been set, including the upcoming home game with TCU on Saturday, January 2, 2021.

The Wildcats and Horned Frogs will tip at 1 p.m., CT on ESPNU, which will be the start of 16 scheduled conference games in January and February. K-State opened Big 12 play in mid-December by splitting games on the road at Iowa State and at home with No. 2/2 Baylor. The games were the earliest ever played in conference play.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — In a rare Monday afternoon tilt, Kansas State handled the Jacksonville Dolphins with relative ease, bouncing back from a blowout loss to 2nd-ranked Baylor over the Weekend.&nbsp;

Sophomore Dajuan Gordon tallied 13 points and 12 rebounds for his second career double double and second in the last three games.&nbsp;

“He’s a year older, more experienced, understanding who he is, and just playing hard. I was really happy for him. He’s been a sad puppy because he has worked on his shot, but he hasn’t made shots. He knows it," said Bruce Weber. "Yesterday in practice with the scout squad they were giving him heck and not guarding him and he was still missing. I was happy he got to make some shots. I told him ‘Whether you make shots or not, you can help our team. Because of what you do and how hard you play, you’re successful.’"

Freshman Nijel Pack added a career-high 16 points on 4-6 shooting from three-point range, while also adding five assists.&nbsp;

“Having some confidence when seeing the ball go through the net, pretty much gives everyone confidence," said Pack. "My teammates kept finding me which fed my confidence. They kept going in and that really boosted my confidence to keep going and shoot a couple more.”

Mike McGuirl added to the scoring with 12 of his own, adding seven more assists, three rebounds and two steals.&nbsp;

The all-around effort lead the Wildcats to a 19 point advantage at the break and they would coast from there.&nbsp;

In a game in which they never trailed,&nbsp; Kansas State snagged a 70-46 win, their fourth of the season, bringing their record to 4-5 overall. Kansas State will be in action on Tuesday, December 29 at 7 p.m. when they host the Omaha Mavericks. to wrap up the 2020 portion of their campaign.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;<a>A year after setting a program record, Kansas State football reset that mark with 33 Academic All-Big 12 honorees – including a school-record 27 first-team members – as the conference office announced the 275-member Academic All-Big 12 teams on Thursday.</a>

K-State’s 33 total honors were the sixth most in conference history and the third-highest total this season. Since 2014, K-State has tallied 200 total Academic All-Big 12 accolades, which is 31 more than the next closest program (Oklahoma State, 169).

Headlining this year’s list were two Wildcats that were nominated with a 4.0 GPA in senior&nbsp;Brock Monty&nbsp;(Graduate School – Business Administration) and redshirt freshman&nbsp;Austin Moore&nbsp;(Kinesiology).

First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20% of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Vaughn is the second Wildcat to earn the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year award – joining Tyler Lockett (2011) – and the Round Rock, Texas native was also named a Second Team All-Big 12 running back, the first Wildcat true freshman in the Big 12 era to earn first- or second-team honors on offense from the league’s coaches.

Brooks was the First Team All-Big 12 kick and punt returner, the 14th&nbsp;time in the 25-year existence of the Big 12 – and the seventh time in the last eight years – that a Wildcat was a First Team All-Big 12 returner. Hubert was one of three players in the Big 12 to be a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First Team, joining Iowa State running back Breece Hall and Texas offensive lineman Samuel Cosmi.

Joining Vaughn on the second team were tight end&nbsp;Briley Moore&nbsp;and offensive lineman&nbsp;Noah Johnson. Brooks totaled 411 return yards this season, including 261 punt-return yards and a pair of touchdowns. His 23.7-yard average on punt returns is tops in school history and would lead the nation if he had the required minimum amount of returns.

A native of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Brooks set the school record with 189 punt-return yards against Kansas and took two punts back for touchdowns, the most by a Big 12 player in a conference game in league history. Additionally, his 47.25-yard average against KU was the highest by any player in the nation with at least four attempts since at least 1996.

Hubert, a product of Topeka, Kansas, earned his second-straight First Team All-Big 12 honor as his 8.5 sacks tied for the Big 12 lead and ranked 25th&nbsp;nationally during the regular season. He also tied for third with 13.0 tackles for loss. His season totals were given a boost when he tallied a career-high 2.5 sacks against Oklahoma State, the most by a Wildcat in a conference game since 2013.

The junior ranks first nationally among non-seniors with 20.0 career sacks, while he is fourth overall among active players with 0.59 career sacks.

Ten Wildcats Earn Postseason Honors from Big 12 Coaches

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;<a>Kansas State true freshman running back&nbsp;Deuce Vaughn&nbsp;has been named one of 13 semifinalists – and the only freshman – for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, the award’s selection committee announced Thursday.</a>

Vaughn is the first Wildcat semifinalist and just the fourth freshman semifinalist in the eight-year history of the award that recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell. In addition, the nominee must have been born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year Division I college.

A native of Round Rock, Texas, Vaughn is one of only two players in the nation to top 600 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards, the other being Clemson senior running back Travis Etienne. Vaughn is also the only player in the Big 12 to lead his team in both rushing and receiving yards.

Finalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award will be announced on Wednesday, December 23. In addition, the nominee must have been born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year Division I college.A native of Round Rock, Texas, Vaughn is one of only two players in the nation to top 600 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards, the other being Clemson senior running back Travis Etienne. Vaughn is also the only player in the Big 12 to lead his team in both rushing and receiving yards.Vaughn ranks fifth in the nation among freshmen, third in the Big 12 overall and tops among freshmen in the league in all-purpose yards per game (112.1). By finishing seventh in the Big 12 regular-season standings, the Wildcats were in line to compete in a bowl game. “This has been an unbelievably challenging year for everyone, but we were very excited to have the opportunity to end the season in a bowl game,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “But, with new positive cases and additional close contacts in our program, we would not have enough players to continue practices and field a team for the bowl game. The Indians led by 12 in the third quarter when a flurry of steals and ensuing layups brought Junction City ( 2-1 ) back within one point in the third quarter. But Junction City never regained the lead.&nbsp;

Blue Jay coach Nick Perez assessed the loss. "We just did things that we don't normally do. We've got guys dribbling the ball 100 times before we passed it. We took some bad shots early and they got some runouts for layups.&nbsp; Perez added has to do a better job of preparing the Blue Jays.

Manhattan sophomore Cameron Carr came off the bench to lead all MHS scorers with 18 points in the win. The Blue Jays struggled to contain him. Junction City was led in scoring by Howard Johnson with 18 points. The Blue Jays hit only two three-point shots in the game.

Bruce Weber speaks to media ahead of Big 12 opener

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians are changing their name after 105 years.

Citing three people familiar with the decision, The New York Times reported Sunday night that the team is moving away from a name considered racist for decades. The Indians have been internally discussing a potential name change for months.

A team spokesman told The Associated Press the franchise has no immediate comment on the report.

The Times said the team could make a formal announcement later this week. It’s not known when the name change will take effect or if the team has settled on a new moniker.

Cleveland’s move away from Indians follows a similar decision earlier this year by the NFL’s Washington Football Team, which was previously known as the Redskins.

For years, Native American groups and others have protested against Cleveland’s use of Indians as its name as well as other imagery used by the American League charter franchise founded in 1901. Last year, the team removed the contentious Chief Wahoo logo from its caps and jerseys, but the smiling, cartoonish mascot has remained popular and merchandise is still sold bearing its image.

The Indians have dealt with a backlash from fans upset over Chief Wahoo’s removal and the club is certain to hear more with the decision to change its name.

“Oh no! What is going on?” President Donald Trump tweeted. “This is not good news, even for ”Indians”. Cancel culture at work!”

In July, just hours after Washington’s plans became known after being pressured by several sponsors, including FedEx which holds naming rights to the football’s team’s stadium, Cleveland owner Paul Dolan released a statement saying the team would review “the best path forward with our team name.”

In the months since, the team has consulted players, front office members, coaching staff, community leaders, share holders and Native American groups.

A few days after Dolan’s statement, Indians manager Terry Francona said it was time to “move forward” with the name change.

“I’ve been thinking about it and been thinking about it before we put out that statement,” said Francona, who has been with the club since 2013. “I know in the past, when I’ve been asked about, whether it’s our name or the Chief Wahoo, I think I would usually answer and say I know that we’re never trying to be disrespectful.

“And I still feel that way. But I don’t think that’s a good enough answer today. I think it’s time to move forward. It’s a very difficult subject. It’s also delicate.”

(AP) — Ochai Agbaji scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures, helping fifth-ranked Kansas roll to a 95-50 victory over Omaha in the Jayhawks’ final tune-up before beginning Big 12 play. Mitch Lightfoot had a career-best 14 points, David McCormack had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Tyon Grant-Foster added 13 points off the bench as the Jayhawks cruised to their 12th consecutive win at Allen Fieldhouse.
