MANHATTAN, Kan. - Fresh off a 6-4 season in 2020, Manhattan High School enters 2021 with a sense of optimism, coupled with some inexperience, but Head Coach Joe Schartz says that doesn't worry him much.&nbsp;

"First games are rough, especially when you have a lot of young kids that don't have a lot of Friday night experience," said Schartz. "We're just going to keep it all in perspective. We've been progressing every day at practice and moving forward, and that's all we can hope for. There's going to be mistakes, and it's going to be sloppy at times, but hopefully the kids just keep battling and represent Manhattan High the way that it should be."

The Indians return quarterback Keenan Schartz, who was thrust into the starting lineup last year when injuries shuffled around Manhattan's backfield, but the experience proved valuable for the 5'10" junior.&nbsp;

Schartz won't be alone in the backfield either, with running back Vinny Smith returning after some injury issues hampered his production last season, but the tandem, while a tad undersized, presents a speed challenge most oppositions will find challenging to match up against.

Ahead of tomorrow's season opener, Coach Schartz gave an impromptu scouting report of a Buffaloes team that the Indians hosted, and defeated, twice last season, but Garden City lost just eight seniors from a season ago.&nbsp;

"Well, we know that they're very big on the offensive and defensive lines. They're very physical upfront," said Schartz. "They didn't lose a whole lot. Basically everybody is returning that we saw last year in those games and&nbsp; I'm sure they're very motivated, so overall it's their size up front that's going to provide a difficult task for us."

The Indians will make the nearly 4.5 hour bus trip to southwest Kansas on Friday, but according to Schartz, the trip will be broken up with stops in Great Bend for lunch and Hanston for a walk-through to make it easier on the team.

Kickoff is set for 7p.m. Friday from Buffalo Stadium in Garden City.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Just one game after Skylar Thompson threw for more than 300 yards in leading Kansas State to an upset of No. 3 Oklahoma last year, the senior quarterback’s season was over due to a shoulder injury. 

Now, nearly a year later, he’s back for a sixth season and ready to take the field again in Saturday’s season opener against Stanford. Thompson hopes it's the best year yet, especially after a fall camp that he said has been the best, most productive of his lengthy college career.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;and select players met with members of the media on Tuesday at the Vanier Family Football Complex as Wildcats prepare for their 2021 season opener against Stanford in the Allstate Kickoff Classic.&nbsp;

Klieman previewed Stanford and detailed their offensive style. "You watch the film, they're going to do what they do, whether it's multiple tight ends to a tight end with a fullback to extra linemen, whatever it may be. I think that's still an identity that they have," said Klieman. "So, we have to a great job of trying to find some different looks and different things to try to slow those guys down because they're going to try to rush the football. I know that they have really good skill kids, and their quarterbacks can spin it around as well, but if you can't stop the run , it's going to be a long day for you."

The Wildcats will look to match the Cardinal offense with several new additions to the defensive side of the ball. Klieman highlighted the areas the defense had improved thanks to those new members of the team.

"Hopefully quite a bit with new faces. Kind of a renewed focus. A really good offseason. I know we're bigger, we're stronger, we're more athletic. Being deeper, doesn't mean that we're automatically going to play better. It still has to come down to executing. We talk all the time about limiting explosive plays, and you do that by playing with great technique and do that by tackling really well. That's still an emphasis for us, and we have to tackle really well," he said. "There's going to be a lot of new faces out there. We like what we see right now in fall camp with the improvements we've made on defense, but we'll find out the first three weeks of the season in the non-conference. We move guys around because some guys are playing multiple positions, so we need to continue to move guys around and find the best fit for everybody before we get into conference play. These next three weeks are really critical for us."

Offensively, the Wildcats will once again lean on All-American running back Deuce Vaughn to lead the way, and Klieman says Vaughn is more confident than ever.

“​​He was a real confident freshman as it was, but just the amount of reps, the amount of pictures that he's seen, the amount of carries he's had, as well as his reception stuff. You can tell he feels so comfortable within the offense and has learned a lot of the nuances of our offense as well as the pictures that a defense is showing him," said Klieman. "So, we're thrilled that this as an integral part of our offense, and obviously we need to find ways of getting him the football.”

Saturday's contest against Stanford will mark the first time K-State has opened the season against a power five opponents since KSU lost on the road at Stanford in 2016, but Chris Klieman noted just how big of a challenge his team is up against.

“Big and physical, across the board. It doesn't matter if it's the offensive line and tight ends, fullback, woo wide receivers for that matter to defensively. Really athletic physical guys that don't stay blocked and so from a personnel standpoint. It'll be a big challenge for us," he said.

The Wildcats and Cardinal kick off at 11 a.m., on Saturday inside AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and the game will be shown nationally on FS1.

K-State Holds Weekly Football Press Conference Prior to Season Opener

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– K-State head baseball coach&nbsp;Pete Hughes&nbsp;and his Wildcats are excited for another year of 19 Ways, kicking off the 2021-22 campaign by volunteering at the Manhattan Just Tri It Triathlon (August 14), Alzheimer’s Association welcome event (August 21) while holding the annual Manhattan Catbacker Club youth baseball clinic (August 24).

Hughes, entering his fourth season, and his team are winners of the last two Wildcat Cup awards, given to the K-State Athletics program who makes the largest impact on the community through service. Hughes installed 19 Ways when he arrived at Manhattan as a community service initiative designed to have a positive impact on the community on 19 different occasions.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Hughes and his team were still able to connect and support the community last year through signature events such as Shave for the Brave and the ALS Awareness Halloween Game.

Shave for the Brave culminates the program’s fundraising campaign for College Baseball Vs. Cancer to benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The Wildcats are three-time defending national fundraising champions, raising over $93,000 in that span. Last fall, K-State’s players and coaches raised $38,019 – nearly $10,000 more than any other college baseball program.

“I love it because it tells me I have the right guys in my clubhouse,” Hughes&nbsp;said. “Kids that care about the right things. Kids that aren’t entitled and feel truly privileged to have their health and get to play baseball at a great university. To be proactive and raise that amount of money in back-to-back-back years, speaks volumes.”

This season’s Shave for the Brave is scheduled for Sunday, November 7 following the finale of the annual Fall World Series at Tointon Family Stadium.

Another marquee event is the ALS Awareness Halloween Game, scheduled for Saturday, October 30. The players and coaches dress in costume for a fun, entertaining game of baseball while also raising money for ALS. Fans are encouraged to come in costume and support a worthy cause.

The 19 Ways program is named in honor of his late mother, Alice, whose favorite number was 19. For K-State student-athletes and staff, this is a platform to give back to the Manhattan community that gives such tremendous support throughout the course of the year.

Hughes developed the program while service as head coach at Virginia Tech in 2009 and continued the initiative at Oklahoma. Now, several teams across the country have adopted 19 Ways, including Notre Dame, Northern Illinois, Northeaster and Virginia Tech, among others.

“At Kansas State, our student-athletes will be privileged, not entitled,” Hughes said. “We will be extremely active in our great community and give back to the community that supports us so well. It is an honor to the selfless and charitable life that my mother led to now have her legacy attached to another program and community.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. — With just days ahead of Kansas' season opener, Head Coach Lance Leipold and the Jayhawks revealed a new alternate uniform.&nbsp;

The Jayhawks will wear their new threads for their homecoming game on October 16th against Texas Tech.&nbsp;

According to the release put out by Kansas Athletics, "The uniform will feature powder blue jerseys from the Kansas Comet era with a bold KANSAS across the chest. The jersey also features a 3D Jayhawk head on the shoulder caps. On the helmet and the hip of the dark blue pants is the classic 'Bowtie K' from 1929."

The uniform features a rarely seen "Bowtie K," logo that is from the late 1920's, while also featuring the 1941 Jayhawk head on the shoulders.

Kansas football unveils new uniform

Per a report, the New England Patriots have released veteran quarterback Cam Newton, and named rookie Mac Jones its starter.&nbsp;

Newton had missed five practices earlier in training camp due to COVID-19 protocols. With Newton being unvaccinated, it left the door opened for head coach Bill Belichick to remove Newton and the risks associated with him being unvaccinated amongst his team, and he took the chance.

Newton threw for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions in his one season in New England, while also rushing for just under 600 yards and 12 TDs.&nbsp;

REPORT: Patriots release Cam Newton, name Mac Jones starting QB

WAMEGO, Kan. (WIBW) - So many players looked to join Wamego’s team this fall, the Red Raiders ran out of uniforms and are looking to order more.

Roughly 90 Red Raiders signed up to compete.

“I think it says something for our coaching staff and just what our past players have done to create some excitement,” Wamego head coach Weston Moody said.

Wamego came up just one point shy of advancing to the 4A state semifinals last season. The Red Raiders fell 21-20 to Ark City after a failed two-point conversion with 15 seconds left.

“When we say ‘one yard,’ and ‘games are won by inches,’ they know what that means,’” Moody said. “The guys that were in it, they understand it — and hopefully they can use that as fuel.”

The Red Raiders return this fall to build on the momentum of a regional championship while looking for their first state championship in school history.

”My first team meeting three years ago, I told them, ‘We’re going to win a state championship here.’ And I think they were kinda like, ‘Oh, this guy is crazy,’ Moody said. “I think this last season, getting so close to being in the semifinals and losing to Ark City and Ark City eventually making it to the state title game, I feel that our guys see that it’s a possibility if we just keep staying the course and getting better and growing from our losses.”

This year’s roster features 17 seniors. They also return star quarterback Hayden Oviatt, a junior, who threw for 1,152 yards and ten touchdowns last season and rushed for 1,539 yards and 14 touchdowns.

“What he did last year was pretty amazing,” Moody said. “His production for our team was 90%. Just a very important piece for us.”

Wamego opens the season Friday at home against Concordia.

KPZ PREVIEW: Wamego looks to build on playoff run in 2020

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;K-State women’s basketball head coach Jeff Mittie has finalized his roster for the upcoming 2021-22 season with the addition of Oklahoma transfer Heavenly Greer.

Greer, a product of Phoenix, Arizona, joins an impressive group of signees for the Wildcats which includes: Pedersen joins previous K-State signees: Rebekah Dallinger (Sydney, Australia), Brylee Glenn (Raymore, Missouri), Jaelyn Glenn (Raymore, Missouri), Malene Lind Pedersen (Aabyhoj, Denmark) and Serena Sundell (Maryville, Missouri).

“We are excited to add Heavenly to our roster for the upcoming season,” said Mittie about the forward. “She is a talented forward that has good upside at both ends of the floor. She is quick off the floor and possesses an excellent feel for the game. We wanted to add depth to our inside game and add someone that was athletic enough to defend multiple positions. We believe Heavenly can provide this to our team.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WIBW) - Coming off a week of six home runs in seven days, Major League Baseball has named Royals catcher Salvador Perez the American League Player of the week.

Perez homered each of the Royals’ last five games, matching a franchise record for consecutive games with a home run. In one of the more interesting non-conference games to open the 2021 college football season, Kansas State will take on Stanford this Saturday in the Allstate Kickoff Classic inside AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The game – one of just four neutral site matchups featuring two Power 5 teams in the opening weekend – kicks off at 11 a.m. and will be shown on FS1 with Aaron Goldsmith (play-by-play) and Mark Helfrich (analyst) on the call. The game will also be aired nationally on ESPN Radio with coverage from Marc Kestecher (play-by-play), Max Starks (analyst), Jorge Sedano (analyst) and Mike Peasley (sidelines). • Thompson has the luxury of playing behind an experienced offensive line that brings back 100% of its starts from a year ago in addition to playmakers at every skill position.

• Headlining the skill group is running back Deuce Vaughn, who burst onto the scene a year ago as he was named the True Freshman of the Year by 247Sports, as well as an All-American and Freshman All-American by multiple outlets.

• Returning at wide receiver – a group that is now tutored by offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham – is dynamic playmakers in Malik Knowles and Phillip Brooks, the latter who was an All-American as a punt returner last year and has earned numerous Preseason All-America honors.

• At tight end, the Wildcats welcome transfer Daniel Imatorbhebhe, who has spent time at both USC and Illinois.

• Defensively, the Cats could rotate as many as 12 players along the defensive front, while two of the linebacker spots will be held down by Daniel Green and Cody Fletcher, both of whom were pressed into starting duties toward the end of 2020.

• Familiar starters in the back end return in cornerbacks Ekow Boye-Doe and safety Jahron McPherson, but K-State brought in four transfer defensive backs that look poised to lead the secondary in 2021.

<a>MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Head coach&nbsp;Bruce Weber&nbsp;announced the additions of transfers&nbsp;Jordan Brooks&nbsp;(Grayson, Ky./East Carter/Bosco Institute/Iona)&nbsp;and&nbsp;Trey Harris&nbsp;(Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington/Indian Hills Community College)&nbsp;as walk-ons to the men’s basketball team for the upcoming 2021-22 season.</a>

Brooks comes to K-State from Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., where he spent his freshman season playing for Hall of Fame head coach&nbsp;Rick Pitino, while Harris arrives from junior college powerhouse Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, where he played his freshman season in 2020-21.

Both will have four years of eligibility remaining after the NCAA granted fall and winter sport student-athletes an additional year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A 6-foot-4, 190-pound forward, Brooks was a part of a Gaels’ squad which won the MAAC (Metro Atlantic) Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in Pitino’s first season. He played in just 2 games and recorded no statistics. He averaged 15.9 points and 8.6 rebounds as a senior in 2018-19 at East Carter High School in Grayson, Kentucky before playing a postgraduate year in 2019-20 at Don Bosco Prep in Crown Point, Indiana.

Brooks has a great basketball pedigree as he is the son of former Indiana Mr. Basketball&nbsp;Delray Brooks, who played at Indiana (1984-86) for legendary coach&nbsp;Bob Knight&nbsp;before finishing his career at Providence (1986-88), where he helped the Friars to the Final Four in 1987.

A 5-foot-11, 165-pound guard, Harris played in 21 games as a reserve for Indian Hills, which capped a 21-3 season in 2020-21 by falling one point short of advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson for the 17th&nbsp;time. He played in 21 games, averaging 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 8.8 minutes per game. He connected on 40 percent from the field, including 42.1 percent from 3-point range, and shot 66.7 percent from the free throw line.

Harris prepped at Bloomington High School in Bloomington, Illinois.

<a>K-State returns four of its top-5 scorers, including super senior&nbsp;Mike McGuirl&nbsp;and rising sophomores&nbsp;Davion Bradford,&nbsp;Selton Miguel&nbsp;and&nbsp;Nijel Pack, for the 2021-22 season. In all, the Wildcats return nine lettermen, including juniors&nbsp;</a>Kaosi Ezeagu&nbsp;and&nbsp;Carlton Linguard, Jr., sophomore&nbsp;Luke Kasubke&nbsp;and&nbsp;Seryee Lewis.

The only senior in 2020-21, McGuirl paced the team in field goals (112), 3-point field goals (60), assists (3.6 apg.) and steals (1.0 spg.) and was second in scoring (11.8 ppg.) while starting all 29 games.&nbsp;Pack (12.7 ppg.) became the first true freshman to lead the Wildcats in scoring since 2013-14, while shooting at a clip of 41.8 percent from the field, including 40.5 percent from 3-point range, and 79.4 percent from the free throw line. Bradford (7.7 ppg.) and Miguel (7.2 ppg.) were fourth and fifth in scoring, respectively, while Bradford recorded the second-highest single-season field goal percentage (62.1) in school history.

Three transfers – senior&nbsp;Mark Smith&nbsp;(Missouri), junior&nbsp;Markquis Nowell&nbsp;(Little Rock) and sophomore&nbsp;Ismael Massoud&nbsp;(Wake Forest) – have been added to the roster to go along with a pair of incoming freshmen in&nbsp;Maximus Edwards&nbsp;and&nbsp;Logan Landers. The transfer trio have accounted for nearly 400 3-pointers (383-of-1061; 36.1 percent) in their college careers.

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Manhattan High School's Indian football team showcased itself to the public for the first time on Thursday night.&nbsp;

Just over a week ahead of MHS's season opener at Garden City, Head Coach Joe Schartz and the Indians gave a first look to parents, students and fans from inside Bishop Stadium.&nbsp;

The Indians held a varsity vs. junior varsity style scrimmage, simulating a realistic game setting. Several schools across the state of Kansas will participate in "Jamboree" scrimmages on Friday night to simulate their game action prior to week one, but Manhattan opted to focus inward.

The Indians return just over half its starters on both sides of the ball in 2021, but will need the new members of the starting lineup to gain valuable experience in a short amount of time. And with week one's contest against Garden City being the third matchup between the two schools in the last two seasons, there won't be any opportunity for slip ups.&nbsp;

Last season, Manhattan opened the season with a 21-7 win over the Buffaloes, and followed it up with a 21-20 win over Garden City in the 6A state playoffs. Both games were played at Manhattan's Bishop Stadium, but this year, MHS will make the 4-plus hour trek to southwest Kansas to open off the year.

Perez’s 35th home run fueled a five-run sixth inning during which the team batted around and helped the Royals snap the Mariners’ three-game winning streak. It was the catcher’s fifth homer in seven games on Kansas City’s current road trip. The Royals have won five of those seven.

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;K-State head coach Jeff Mittie has finalized his coaching and support staffs for the 2021-22 season, as he has selected Logan Daei as the Director of Women’s Basketball Administration.

“We are excited for the addition of Logan to our support staff,” said Mittie. “She has excellent experience in both high school and women’s college administration. She was a part of a championship team at

Arkansas State as their Director of Operations and with that experience, she will serve us well in the day-to-day operations of our program. We are thrilled to have her, her husband Cameron and their newborn Carter officially join our staff and the K-State family.”

Daei’s responsibilities will include: coordination of staff and team travel and logistics, money and budget management, manage all home game logistics, on-campus recruiting logistics, training table coordination, camp/clinic budgets, daily office operations, and direct program contact for all other KSA departments.

Prior to joining K-State women’s basketball, Daei was recently a teacher and girl’s basketball, volleyball and track coach at Highland Middle School in Fort Worth, Texas.

Before moving into secondary education, Daei served as an assistant coach, director of basketball operations and video coordinator at Arkansas State in the 2015-16 season. During her time in Jonesboro, the Red Wolves registered a 27-6 overall record, which included the 2015-16 Sun Belt Conference regular season title with a 19-1 overall record and a second round appearance in the 2016 WNIT.

For the 2021-22 season, the Wildcats will return eight letter winners led by 2022 All-America candidate Ayoka Lee and All-Big 12 candidate Rachel Ranke. K-State will add the services of five newcomers including: Rebekah Dallinger (Sydney, Australia), Brylee Glenn (Kansas City, Missouri), Jaelyn Glenn (Kansas City, Missouri) Malene Lind Pederson (Aabyhoj, Denmark) and Serena Sundell (Maryville, Missouri).

Wildcats’ Husker Invitational Schedule Adjusted

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;K-State women's basketball head coach Jeff Mittie has added Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame member and 1988 Olympic gold medalist Bridgette Gordon as the program’s Coordinator of Recruiting Operations following the departure of Sadie Thramer, who was recently named as an assistant coach at South Dakota State.

"Bridgette has been a winner at every level she has played and coached,” stated Mittie about the women’s basketball legend joining the Wildcat staff. “Her on-court accolades as a player include a gold medal in the Seoul Olympics with USA basketball, NCAA Championships at Tennessee and numerous All-American and Player of the Year awards throughout her collegiate career.

Bridgette was also a highly decorated professional overseas and enjoyed playing time in the WNBA during the league’s infancy. As a coach, she has been a part of championship teams and NCAA Tournament teams at both Wichita State and Tennessee while also guiding their recruiting efforts. We are thrilled to welcome Bridgette to our staff and the K-State Family."

Gordon’s responsibilities with the Wildcats will include: management of recruiting, organization and coordination of on-campus visits and cultivation and maintenance of relationships with high school and junior college coaches.

Prior to coming to Manhattan, Gordon served as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at SMU from 2019-21. While working with the Mustangs, Gordon helped coach the team’s post players.

Before joining the coaching staff at SMU, Gordon was an assistant at her alma mater, Tennessee, from 2017-19. She helped guide the Lady Vols to 44 wins and back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.

During her playing career at Tennessee, Gordon was one of the most prolific student athletes in the history of Tennessee women’s basketball. She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007, won an Olympic gold medal in 1988 and was a two-time NCAA national champion with the Lady Vols.

As a player at Tennessee, Gordon was named 1989 NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player, 1989 SEC Female Athlete of the Year and 1989 SEC Player of the Year as a senior and was a two-time All-America honoree. She led the Lady Vols to their first two national championships and four straight Final Fours. Gordon finished her college career as the all-time leader in points (2,462) and steals (336) and remains second in both categories.

Gordon won an Olympic gold medal in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea. She was the fourth-leading scorer and was second on the team with a 57.1 field goal percentage. She played professionally in Italy, where she was a perennial all-star and won seven Italian Championships and two European Cups (1994 &amp; 1996), and Turkey, before a two-year stint with the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs.

Gordon has experience within the state of Kansas, as she spent seven seasons as an assistant at Wichita State from 2010-17, serving as the recruiting coordinator during her final three seasons. Her efforts helped the Shockers land the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history when Blue Star Basketball rated the 2012-13 signing class at No. 47 in the nation.

During her time at Wichita State, the Shockers won three conference championships, advancing to the program’s first three NCAA Tournaments, and competed in the postseason five times overall. The 2014-15 team went 29-5 for the best record during Gordon’s tenure.

She also worked as an assistant coach at Stetson (2001-06) and Georgia State (2007-10). She signed the nation’s No. 52-ranked class as the recruiting coordinator at Georgia State, and in 2006-07, she was a regional scout for the WNBA.

She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007, won an Olympic gold medal in 1988 and was a two-time NCAA national champion with the Lady Vols.As a player at Tennessee, Gordon was named 1989 NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player, 1989 SEC Female Athlete of the Year and 1989 SEC Player of the Year as a senior and was a two-time All-America honoree. She led the Lady Vols to their first two national championships and four straight Final Fours. Gordon finished her college career as the all-time leader in points (2,462) and steals (336) and remains second in both categories.Gordon won an Olympic gold medal in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea. She was the fourth-leading scorer and was second on the team with a 57.1 field goal percentage. 810 Varsity released its preseason rankings ahead of the 2021 Kansas High School football season Tuesday.&nbsp;

In the Kansas Class 6A poll, defending Centennial League Champion Junction City Blue Jays were tabbed at #7, while its rival Manhattan comes into the poll ranked #9.&nbsp;

In Class 4A, the Wamego Red Raiders crack the top 10 at the #10 spot.

Two more local schools are featured in the Class 3A rankings, with Riley County at #8 and Marysville at #9.

Local schools ranked in preseason poll

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State Head Coach Chris Klieman met with members of the media Tuesday afternoon inside of the new Shamrock Zone of Bill Snyder Family Stadium. His update included all phases of his team ahead of it's 2021 debut against Stanford on September 4th.&nbsp;

One position group that has received&nbsp; large amount of attention ahead of the upcoming season is the running backs. With returning Freshman All-American Deuce Vaughn highlighting the room, Klieman says he'll do the brunt of the work.

Klieman also detailed a few other young backs who will likely impact games for Kansas State, like fellow sophomores Joe Ervin who played in four games as a freshman in 2019 before opting out of the 2020 season, and Jacardia Wright who has seen action in seven games as a Wildcat.

But one local product whose name has already been spoken a number of times throughout camp was mentioned as well.

"D.J. Giidens, I really believe will be in that mix, whether it's now or as the season goes along, he's done some really good things that we're excited about him possibly playing as a freshman," said Klieman. "We just have got to continue to slow the game down for him. So we feel like we're gaining some versatility there and more guys than just Deuce van make plays."

When asked about Giddens' rather quiet arrival to Manhattan and how the Wildcat coaching staff found out about him, Klieman referenced seeing Giddens perform in-person this season.

"Well, he's just from right down the road at Junction, so that's how he ended up here. I mean, we knew who he was all the way through the last few years," said Klieman. "I was able to watch him play when my son played over there. Knew he had an unbelievable amount of ability, and Coach Anderson did a great job recruiting him, Coach Sped did as well and we knew his athleticism and now how could he understand what we're doing, how good was he able to comprehend, as well as the maturity factor to play college football. It's just different from high school and he's done a nice job."Throughout fall camp, both players and coaches have highlighted Giddens' ability and how he might impact the offense as a true freshman. Klieman detailed exactly how he's been able to make his mark."Very strong running back, breaks arm tackles and stuff. We're continuing to have him learn the protections and he's getting so much better at that, he's got nice hands out of the backfield," said Klieman. "It's just, you're not going to force feed a kid like that 40-50 plays early on in a season, but he's somebody that we think has a chance to help us this year."Klieman also assured the media that his arrival on the media's radar was not a surprise inside of Vanier.&nbsp;"He didn't fall under the radar in our mind. We were well-aware of him and well-aware of his ability for a while," he said. "We were not surprised, we were pleased with how quickly he was able to acclimate to college football, so he's a guy that we've been on for a while and we're excited about getting him here."
