Per a report, the New England Patriots have released veteran quarterback Cam Newton, and named rookie Mac Jones its starter.
Newton had missed five practices earlier in training camp due to COVID-19 protocols. With Newton being unvaccinated, it left the door opened for head coach Bill Belichick to remove Newton and the risks associated with him being unvaccinated amongst his team, and he took the chance.
Newton threw for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions in his one season in New England, while also rushing for just under 600 yards and 12 TDs.
