Ronda Kay Showalter Cook, 67, passed away Tuesday, November 2nd in Manhattan, Ks. She was fully vaccinated and succumbed to complications from COVID. Ronda was born in Parsons, Kansas on January 31, 1954, to Charles Marion and Wilma (Bailey) Showalter. She was the third of four children and the only girl. Living on the family farm until she was 14, Ronda attended schools in South Mound and Erie. In 1972 she graduated from Thayer High School. After High School, Ronda went to Neosho County Community Junior College, then on to Emporia State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and subsequently a Master of Arts in Special Education. Ronda loved teaching, but not as much as she loved her students, their families, her family, and her friends. People were valuable to Ronda, and she never thought twice about finding ways to help others, to encourage them, or to bake something delicious to bring to them. She was creative and meticulous in organizing details, and she used these gifts to enrich the lives of the people around her. Her participation in various community and church organizations was a highlight of her life, as she often talked about the joy it brought her to contribute to the greater good. After retiring from her job teaching, Ronda continued to volunteer at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community, the First United Methodist Church in Wamego, KS, The Thrift Shop, the Worship Team at church, and several women’s groups. She was known for staying connected to others with cards, texts, and email. Ronda married Joe L. Cook (d. 6/5/2011) on July 21, 1974 in Thayer, KS. Their relationship was inspirational as they continued to grow in love and devotion to one another throughout their married life. They often said, “We may not be perfect, but we are perfect for each other.” Ronda said she looked forward to being reunited with Joe in Heaven and wants the memory of their loving relationship to be evident in how she is memorialized. Ronda is survived by her brother, Ren Showalter (Carrol), Parker, Colorado; her brother and sister-in-law Robert L. Cook (Diane) and Nancy M. Philip Ernest Thompson, 66, of Manhattan, passed away Thursday, November 4th, at his home. He worked as a job site manager, retiring in 2018, from the Pipe Fitters Union Local #441 working on projects in the Manhattan area and also around the United States for Fluor-Daniel Construction Company of Irving Texas. Phil was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on October 26, 1955, the son of the late Jean Grace (LInk) and Hugh Erwin Thompson. He was the husband of Cheryl Lodine (Platt) Thompson and they were married on June 23, 2007, in Manhattan at the First Presbyterian Church. He also was a former Mason. Phil is survived by his wife, Cheryl of the home; two daughters, Amber Renee Thompson, and her fiancee, Brandon Lackey, of Manhattan; Kristan Nicole Thompson of Manhattan; a son, Matthew Paul Thompson, and his fiancee Claire Kringen, of Manhattan. Phil was also survived by two brothers, Paul Henry Thompson and his wife Lily, of Blue Springs, MO; Kenneth Richard Thompson, of Sapulpa, OK; sister, Sarah Anne Gordon, and her husband Matthew, of Topeka; Brother-in-law, Riley Platt, and wife Brenda; sister-in-law, Terri Finley and husband Larry. Lynn Marie Cox, 70, of Wamego, Kansas, died Saturday, November 6, 2021, at Stormont-Vail Medical Center in Topeka, due to complications from a long battle with diabetes. She had been a member of the community since 1982

Lynn was born on April 3, 1951, in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of William and Ethel Schaaf Way. She attended local grade schools and graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School.

Lynn worked for several years as a fingerprint specialist for the F.B.I. in Washington DC and Lincoln and for the Nebraska State Patrol. After moving to Wamego, Lynn was a para educator for USD 320 in Wamego. In Lincoln she volunteered for the local Humane Society working in the adoption room and was a member of the local fire department auxiliary. In Wamego, she was active in the Kansas Specialty Dog Service foster program. Lynn also volunteered at the Senior Center.

Lynn loved her family and the time she could spend with them. She enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and all kinds of animals, especially dogs.

Lynn married Ronald Cox on June 10, 1974, in Ashland, Nebraska. He survives at their home.

She is also survived by her children; Crystal McWilliams (Michael), Martinsburg, West Virginia, John Cox (Jessica), Wamego, Shylee Cox (Jeremy Bohanon), Wamego, and Sam Cox (Erin), Nashville, Tennessee; and her four grandchildren, Mya, Mitchell, Alexandra, and Twyla. Lynn was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Frank Way

Dale Alvin Knopf was born April 2, 1948, in Cherokee, Oklahoma to Samuel and Bernice Knopf. Dale left this world to be in the arms of his savior on Nov. 4, 2021. He was surrounded by his loving family. Dale was the most loving and caring person – unafraid to fight for those who are unable to fight for themselves. How do you put into such few words the impact one person has made on this world? He lived and shared his faith with everyone. His example has led to all of his children and grandchildren learning about Christ and how His love was shown through Dale. He recently had the opportunity to celebrate the baptism of 2 of his grandchildren and rejoice in their love for Christ. We now rejoice because he has been welcomed home as a good and faithful servant.

Dale met his loving wife Cherie while he was cruising Fe. It took only one glance and he knew he would be with her for the rest of his life. It took a little longer for him to convince her. Of course, they still had to graduate high school. They both went to different high schools (Salina High School and Sacred Heart). Cherie was always getting in trouble for Dale’s antics. He would rev his car and do doughnuts in the school parking lot and show up for games and sit too close to her. Dale struggled with actually making it to class – yet he managed to graduate with high grades. He had a great homework “support group” that allowed him to play hooky and go sit in Cherie’s school parking lot. He was guilty of many pranks during this time including moving the principal’s car to the roof by carrying it up the stairs. He was accused of many others that he was actually innocent of but would have happily helped out with. They were married April 7, 1969, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and recently celebrated their 52nd Anniversary.

Dale enlisted in the Army Reserves after high school. This was at the height of the Vietnam War. While he was never deployed to Vietnam, he lost many friends. He spent his time at “Ft. Lost in the Woods”. Dad left the military with the rank of E-7 and the reputation of always standing up for his men. He also loved to boast that he was the only one asked not to re-enlist because he was not afraid to stand up for what was right. Dale and Cherie married in 1969 – much to the surprise of the priest. Dale, in his typical fashion, found someone willing to attend the premarital classes. He showed up for the wedding and the priest was not sure who he was. Dale always knew how to utilize his resources! Life was not always perfect, but Dale never lost his faith in God. He never once gave up on his children, no matter how many mistakes we made. Instead, he rejoiced with us when we returned to God. He has 5 loving children who miss him so much it is hard to breath – Nathan and Miranda Knopf, Sarah and Greg McMillen, Jonathan and Jenna Knopf, Scott and Lola Cowan, and Amber and Burt Love. His grandchildren were blessed to have such an amazing Godly example: Isaac, Charlie Rae, Harvey, Sammie, Alex, Katrina, Ethan, Josh, Landon, Liam, Ellie, Ben, Elianna, Lilli, Danny, and Isla. And many more loved ones who consider him dad and Papa. His legacy will know no limits and he will live on through all of us.

Dale worked for UPS, first as a delivery driver in 1973 and then as a feeder driver. He retired from UPS in 2010, immediately began growing his beard and never wore brown again. Everyone he worked with became family and we grew up knowing them as more than “just coworkers”. He was very proud of his beard, even when Cherie would “accidentally” trim more than he wanted.

Dale began his new career post-retirement of full-time Papa and Santa. He always looked forward to being able to spread joy and presents as Santa to not only his family but also throughout the community. This Christmas there will be a void that no one will be able to fill. Dale’s death was beyond tragic and senseless. He sought treatment at our local Emergency Room and he was turned away solely based on political reasons. He utilized his personal freedom and was not vaccinated. Thankfully, there are still good physicians out there. He was met with love and compassion at Stormont Vail by everyone he met. Unfortunately, he arrived septic and hypoxic due to Covid. We believe he lost his fight due to not receiving treatment he desperately needed in Salina and sadly is not the only one. Through all of that, he never lost his faith and love for God – nor his fight to make sure no one else has to die because of the actions of these “doctors”. A Celebration of Life will be held on Nov. 12, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Foursquare Church in Salina with burial to follow at Mt. Pleasant. Visitation will be held Nov. 11th from 5-7p at Emmanuel Foursquare Church. Please dress comfortably! Family suggests memorials be given to Salina Shares. Dale Alvin Knopf 

Elinor was born January 6, 1935 in Solomon, Kansas, the daughter of Mildred Watt Wiley and Harry A. Wiley. She graduated from Enterprise High School in 1953 and from Kansas Wesleyan College in 1957. She married Wayne C. Haas in August 12, 1962. Elinor taught English and literature at Abilene High School for 37 years, serving as head of the English department for 23 years. She retired in 1994 and was inducted into the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame in 1996. After retiring from teaching she volunteered at the Eisenhower Presidential Library for 22 years. She received the Weismann Outstanding Volunteer Service Award, given to her at the annual State of the Archives Address and Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. Elinor was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Chancel Choir for many years. She was active in Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Abilene Area Retired Teachers, and the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad. She served as a Community Foundation for Dickinson County board member and chaired the Scholarship Committee. The Abilene Chamber of Commerce recognized her with a Volunteer of the Year award. Elinor was a frequent patron of the Abilene Public Library and served on the Library Board of Trustees. She was in charge of the donated books and the frequent sales that created funds of library programs, events, and other needs. Elinor never found a book she thought should be recycled. Elinor was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wayne, and brother, Ronald Wiley. Survivors include her brother Darrell Wiley (Lucille), Abilene, and sister, Deloris Bell, Overland Park, Kansas. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Graveside Services for Eilinor will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Enterprise. She received the Weismann Outstanding Volunteer Service Award, given to her at the annual State of the Archives Address and Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. Elinor was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Chancel Choir for many years. She was active in Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Abilene Area Retired Teachers, and the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad. She served as a Community Foundation for Dickinson County board member and chaired the Scholarship Committee. The Abilene Chamber of Commerce recognized her with a Volunteer of the Year award. Elinor was a frequent patron of the Abilene Public Library and served on the Library Board of Trustees. She was in charge of the donated books and the frequent sales that created funds of library programs, events, and other needs. Elinor never found a book she thought should be recycled. Elinor was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wayne, and brother, Ronald Wiley. Survivors include her brother Darrell Wiley (Lucille), Abilene, and sister, Deloris Bell, Overland Park, Kansas. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Dody was the co-owner of Berg Repair in rural Westmoreland. She was a mechanic and bookkeeper as well as all other aspects of the business. In her earlier years she managed a day care in Wamego and had been an active member of the Jaycees, holding both local and state offices. Dody was a volunteer for 7 Township Fire and dedicated member in the Gold Star community for the families of fallen service members, planting trees, holding flags, and sharing stories with the families of the finest men and women in the world. Dody was a life member and leader of the Girl Scouts. She loved to read, sew, tend her flower gardens, and travel to craft shows. Dody was always willing to open her home to anyone in need and was known as Mamma Dody or Aunt Dody by many people. She attended St. Luke Lutheran Church.

Dody married Kirby Robertson on December 28, 1977. She later married Charles Berg on July 28, 1990 in Wheaton, Kansas. He survives at their home.

Dody is survived by her children; Amanda Miller (Jerod) of Blaine, and Tobias Ketchell (Karma) of New Orleans; Her grandchildren Kristie Smith (Foster Patton), Eveyln Robertson, Alia Robertson, Aubrie McCallum, and Charlotte McCallum; her siblings, Pat Forsberg (Roger), Dennis Plummer, Barbara Reed (Ralph), Conradena Plummer, Jeanne Devader (Steve), and Sam Quigley. Dody was preceded in death by her parents, her son Sergeant First Class Forrest Robertson, and her siblings, Michael Plummer and Kate Lewis.

Mary Ann Moege, 88, of Alma, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2021 in Alma Manor Nursing Home. She was a long-time member of the community.

Born January 27, 1933, in rural Riley County, Kansas, Mary was the daughter of Charles Bean and Anna Grunewald Bean.

Mary worked at the Knotty Pine Restaurant in Alma for a number of years. Mary was the custodian at St. John Lutheran Church and School for 18 years, a custodian at Wabaunsee High School for 9 years, a custodian at First National Bank in Alma for 18 years, a custodian for the Alma Post Office for 12 years and a custodian for Sprint Telephone Office for 23 years. She also did cleaning for many private homes around the community and was a caretaker for many older people in the area.

Mary was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Alma where she was a member of the Ladies Friendship Circle. She was an active member in the Spring Creek Community Club and attended Open Door and enjoyed playing cards and dominoes with her many friends and family. An avid K-State fan, Mary also enjoyed her trips to the Casino, Quilting and loved watching her family at their activities and sporting events.

She married Wilbur Moege on February 24, 1952 at St. John Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on November 30, 1989.

Mary is survived by her three daughters, Diana Rubottom and her husband Les, Shirley Degenhardt and her husband Charles and Gloria Mumpower and her husband Larry; a son, James Moege and his wife Leah; nine grandchildren, Eric Rubottom and his wife Erin, Ginger Ruhnke and her husband Matt, Crystal Marshall and her husband JaCory, Denise Dlugosch and her husband Brian, Harold Mumpower, Mary Fialkowski and her husband Joseph, Robert Moege, Jared Moege and Samantha Moege; sixteen great grandchildren; a brother, Vernon Bean and his wife Ardeth; a sister, Agnes Haller; a sister in law, Kay Bean; and many nieces and nephews and friends. Dennis L. Law, 77, passed November 2, 2021 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community, Manhattan, Kansas. Law grew up on the family farm south of Plainview, Texas. He attended and graduated from Petersburg (Texas) High School in 1962. Law was a member of Kansas State University Landscape Architecture faculty for 38 years serving until he retired in 2009. Professor Law received his bachelor’s degree in Park Administration at Texas Tech University in 1967. After graduating, he worked in public and private practice until he earned a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture at Kansas State University while at the rank of instructor. Upon graduating with an MLA in 1974, Law was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1976. He served as Professor and Department Head in the Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning. He became Dean of the college of Architecture, Planning and Design in 1995. Among his many accomplishments as Dean, he marshalled the fund raising for significant renovation of Seaton Hall, successfully advocated for and fostered limited enrollment to the College, and presided over the successful conversion of the professional programs offered in the College from baccalaureate to non-baccalaureate master graduate programs. Dean Law has seen his landscape architecture come to life across the nation. His projects have included city parks, theme parks, residences, landscape development, plazas and reclamation plan for 43,000 acre site in western Wyoming. He has been and international speaker on global environmental issues, with more than 75 papers presented, including lectures to members of the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest, he also presented in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Shanghai, China; Warsaw, Poland; Prague, Czech Republic and San Jose, Costa Rica. In addition, he has written numerous books and other publications on planting design, reclamation of disturbed lands, environmental ethics, the design of a sustainable tropical farm using hydroponics systems in Costa Rica, and landscape architecture education. Dean Law was a fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, Sigma Lambda Alpha National Landscape Architecture Honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. He has been recognized numerous times as one of America’s Most Admired Educators of Design Intelligence Magazine. Dean Law was honored in 1991 by the Blue Key National Honor Society and the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority for outstanding teaching. Preceding him in death were his parents, Alvin and Daisy Wilson Law. Law is survived by his wife, Linda Hyman Law, they married on December 20, 1964, in Brownfield, Texas, he and Linda are members of the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan. They had three children including Dwight (Melissa), also a landscape architect in Shanghai, China; Andrea Law who teaches in the English Language Program at Kansas State University; and Brent Law (Jeanine) active Army Reserves, who resides in Frisco, Texas. Dennis and Linda have four grandchildren, Josh Law who resides in Hawaii; Jaxon Carey and Mari Carey from Manhattan, Kansas; and Isabella Law, Frisco, Texas; Sister Sylvia Kay Law Morris (Otis) of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Dennis is known for paintings and drawings. He has years of experience in pen and ink drawings and acrylic paintings. In spite of having been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2015, Dennis continued to play racquetball with close friend Roger Allerheiligen, qualifying to compete in the Senior Olympics in 2015 and 2017 and won a silver and gold medal in the State of Kansas senior games. Dennis made a point of knowing the names of every student and speaking to them. He learned to say hello and goodbye in 35 languages so international students would feel welcome. At Christmas time Dennis and Linda would give each student two cookies. Memorial services for Law will be held on Sunday, December 19, 2:00 pm, at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz in Manhattan, with Pastor Melanie Nord officiating. Dennis donated his body to the Kansas University Medical Center; burial will be held at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan. Raymond Alvin McMillin, age 87, of Manhattan, Kansas, died November 3, 2021, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. He was born December 10, 1933, in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of Raymond John “Ray” and Mildred Frances (Castleman) McMillin. On June 23, 1956, at St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church, in Omaha, Nebraska, he was married to Imelda Alice Ryan. Alvin graduated from Junction City High School in 1952 and earned a business degree in 1956 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Alvin’s career included accounting and managing the Cooper Theatre, Denver, Colorado and the Indian Hills Theatre, Omaha, Nebraska. His lifetime hobby was photography, with a passion for taking pictures of family and friends. He lived in Junction City, Kansas from 1969 to 2016 where he managed the McMillin family business, City Ice Company, Inc. After retirement he worked as a seasonal tax preparer for H&amp;R Block and was a bookkeeper and inventory data entry specialist for Hop-N-Skip C-Store and McMillin’s Retail Liquor. He devoted much of his time to many service organizations in Junction City and Manhattan as well as continued to care for his lovely wife, the love of his life, genuinely treated her like his queen. They moved to Manhattan in 2016. He was a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church in Junction City and later St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan. He was also a member of the Sertoma Club, served as an elected official of USD 475 Board of Education and was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Junction City, Manhattan, and Arvada, Colorado. Survivors include his wife Imelda of the home; four children: R.A. McMillin-Beckman (Rebecca) of Junction City, Catherine Ann Sandoval (Pete) of Manhattan, George Ryan McMillin (Donna) of Herington, and Mark Thomas McMillin (Teresa) of Manhattan; two siblings: Frances Ann Willert of Germany and Otto John McMillin of Manhattan; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents and by one sister Mary Jane O’Neill. A Parish Vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel. McMillin-Beckman (Rebecca) of Junction City, Catherine Ann Sandoval (Pete) of Manhattan, George Ryan McMillin (Donna) of Herington, and Mark Thomas McMillin (Teresa) of Manhattan; two siblings: Frances Ann Willert of Germany and Otto John McMillin of Manhattan; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents and by one sister Mary Jane O’Neill. A Parish Vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel. Melvin O. Howard, 79, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at Stonybrook Retirement Home in Manhattan, KS. A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 12, 2021, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 9719 Clarks Creek Road, with Pastor Tim McCall officiating. Melvin was born November 14, 1941, in Junction City, KS the son of Merwin Roscoe and Rose Mae (Miles) Howard. Melvin grew up in Junction City and graduated from Junction City High School. He married Janice Lee Heller. Janice passed away earlier this year on February 5, 2021. Melvin and Janice owned and operated a vacuum service and sales business in Junction City for many years. Trujilda "Tru" Mitchell, 60, of Junction City, KS, a long-time resident has gone to be in the presence of her Father and Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Geary Community Hospital. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2021 at Church of Deliverance in Junction City, KS. A visitation will be held one hour to service time at the church Friday. Tru was born June 23, 1961 in San Andres Islas, Colombia the place where she was eager to return. She was the daughter of Cristobal Mitchell and Victoria Christopher Tru received a Certificate of Completion in Nursing Assistance from Cloud County Community College. She worked as a private duty home aide providing personal care for many people. To insure a home for her daughters, she also took a position working with a private janitorial service. She loved praising God, thrift shopping at Goodwill and eating out at Taco Bell. Tru enjoyed going to the YMCA swimming pool, riding the ATA Bus, sitting outside in her yard under the tree talking to friends and waving at everyone that drove by. Tru always showed friendliness. She always stated, "Because I'm really, really, really blessed! She always greeted everyone with a warm smile. She would bend over backwards, to help everyone in whatever way she could. You never had to ask what she was thinking because she was going to tell you whether you wanted to hear it or not. To know her was to love her. She left her mark wherever she went. Her vibrant colors and love for God, family friends and year round Christmas lights. She designated herself as the family doula by traveling and providing assistance when her daughters and nieces had new arrivals. One of her greatest joys in life was raising her three beautiful daughters to be best friends and have each other’s back no matter what. She was a phenomenal mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, care giver and loved serving others with no discrimination of person. Anyone wishing to see Trujilda again will have to go to heaven, since heaven has become her new residence. Mel was the second son that came into this life on September 22, 1940, to Merle and Minerva (Armbruster) Griggs.  He lived out his childhood and attended school at Kipp, Kansas.

He married Donna Jean Henry on November 9, 1958.

His last weeks were surrounded with laughter and joy with his family.

  He is survived by his wife, Donna of Clay Center; first born son, Kevin and wife Anita of Clay Center; daughter, Kimberly and her life partner Scott of Stilwell; daughter Kay and husband Tim of Topeka; last born Kent and wife Brandi of Clay Center; nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;He also has a bundle of nieces and nephews on both sides of his family.

&nbsp;He was blessed with a lot of preciousness.

He will join his family that has passed before him and God to enjoy peace, beauty and contentment. His brother Vern passed this year and he lost his father in 1951 and his mother in 1986. He gave his talents with love, as a gift to churches wherever he landed including&nbsp;40&nbsp;plus years at the St Paul’s Episcopal, always on call to use his expertise.

He and wife Donna moved to Clay Center in 1968 and purchased Jackson Electric motor repair and expanded it into Griggs Electric. His skills were God given and he could fix almost anything.



A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at the Clay Center United Methodist Family life center with Pastor Reuben Langat officiating. In lieu of respects calls, the family will be available to greet his cherished friends of the community at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday before service.

A family graveside service will be after lunch at the Broughton Cemetery on the hill overlooking the abundant Clay County landscapes where Mel enjoyed his photography.

Rita Faye Henry, age 84 of Randolph, passed away Saturday, October 30, 2021 at her residence.

She was born at her family home in Leonardville on January 28, 1937, the daughter of Lewis and Vera (Young) Faulkender. 

On June 26, 1955 in Topeka, she married Larry Lee Henry.  He survives of the home.

Early in her working years, Rita was a CRA and CNA.  Once her children were born, she became a full-time housewife and enjoyed raising all animals.  She was an avid K-State fan and was even deputized so she could ride with her husband while he transported inmates to different towns. 

 

In addition to her husband Larry Henry, she is survived by three sons, William Henry and wife Laurie of Westmoreland, Dallas Henry and wife Bridgett of Randolph and Eric Henry of Westmoreland; one sister, Nola Jean Renner of Manhattan; ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Iris Smith.

Memorial services are pending and will be announced later by the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Gary William Beck, age 91, formerly of Clay Center, passed away Friday, October 29, 2021 in the Journey House at Tabitha Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Gary was born at his grandmother’s home in Seneca on September 8, 1930, the son of William Elmer and Gladys Marie (Cross) Beck.  He was raised on his parent’s farm outside Centralia and graduated from Centralia High School in 1948 where he played football and the trumpet. He worked on the family farm after high school until he served in the United States Air Force from 1952 until 1956.  He then went to Kansas State University and joined the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and participated in Block and Bridle.  He graduated from KSU in 1960 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science.

His first job after graduating was as a meat grader working with the USDA for meat packing plants in Garden City and Dodge City, KS.  In 1963 he moved to Papillion, NE to work as the Farm Service Director at Clarke Bank. He married Mary Ellen Gaither on June 12, 1965 and they later had two children, Barry and Amy Jo.  They moved to Clay Center, KS in 1966 as Gary was hired as the Agricultural Banking Officer at Union State Bank. Gary was an active member of the community and the Clay Center United Methodist Church.  He was in the Kansas Livestock Association, Clay County Feeders, Leader of Methodist Youth Fellowship, General Chairman of the Piotique Celebration in 1968 and president of Methodist Men in 1970. In 1970 he began a successful career in real estate and led Gary Beck &amp; Associates Motel Brokers for the next 20 years.  In 1980 he was President of Nationwide Motel Brokers Association and joined the Sesostris Shrine Band playing his trumpet.  After Gary and Mary Ellen divorced in 1983 he married Mary Louise Dreiling on December 20, 1986.  In 1990 he began a second career as an Independent Insurance Agent specializing in Life and Health spanning the next 30 years.

Gary was a loyal KSU football fan with season tickets for over 50 years. He was an avid golfer for many years and enjoyed summers on his houseboat at Milford Lake. He completed many projects at his house in Clay Center including a large patio and fireplace made from limestone.  He loved to cook, bake, grill and smoke meats.

His biggest passion was music.  Even though the trumpet was his main instrument he also played piano, violin, clarinet, banjo and ukulele.  He and Mary also sang in the church choir. He played the trumpet in the Clay Center City Band, Manhattan Municipal Band, The Thundering Cats as well as a Dixieland Band he created that performed many years at Piotique.  He also played the violin in the Morganville Community Chamber Orchestra.  He was a very proud member of Bugles Across America, playing taps at countless funerals over the years to honor veterans.

He is survived by his daughter, Amy Jo (George) Suarez of Lincoln, NE; his grandson, Nathan Suarez of Lincoln, NE; five nephews; two nieces; 13 great nieces and nephews; 23 great-great nieces and nephews and the mother of his children, Mary Ellen Gaither of Humboldt, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Louise Beck; his son Barry Alan Beck; three sisters, Berniece (Glen) Heiser, Maxine (Celestine) Gudenkauf and Bette (Edward) Fager and one nephew.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 12, 2021 at the Clay Center United Methodist Church.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Friday.

Darla Lee Cadoret, 87 of Manhattan, KS passed away on October 22, 2021 at the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice House in Manhattan. Darla was born December 6, 1933 in Stockton, KS. Darla graduated from Stockton High School on May 16, 1952. She married the love of her life, Joseph Cadoret, on November 18,1951 in Stockton. Darla and Joe’s love was nothing short of inspiring. She is survived by her daughters Kim (Doug) French of Stockton and Pamela Herl of North Platte, NE; grandchildren: Guy, Heather (Cameron), Amanda French; Courtney (Brian) Carpenter, Charlee Simpson (Aaron), and Stephanie Miner (Josh); as well as 17 great-grandchildren; sister Connie (Duane) Forbes, brothers: Dale and David Baxter and sister-in-law Bonnie Baxter. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, parents Charles and Flossie Baxter, her brother Don Baxter, sister-in-law Carolyn Baxter, and great-granddaughter Graycee Carpenter. Darla’s career as a licensed child care provider spanned decades and she loved each child as her own. The connections she made with the families had a lasting impression as she still received cards and updates to this day. She was lifelong in her faith and enjoyed her daily devotions. Darla and Joe traveled to Arizona many winters and you could find them playing Mexican train, shopping, and visiting with her family and friends. Darla enjoyed cooking, and her family would always request her famous peanut pie and Special K bars at every reunion and family holiday gathering. An inurnment will take place in Stockton Cemetery at a later date. Memorials can be made to Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice House in Manhattan or the Stockton Public Library. Darla Lee Cadoret, 87 of Manhattan, KS passed away on October 22, 2021 at the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice House in Manhattan. Darla was born December 6, 1933 in Stockton, KS. Darla graduated from Stockton High School on May 16, 1952. She married the love of her life, Joseph Cadoret, on November 18,1951 in Stockton. Darla and Joe’s love was nothing short of inspiring. Norma Brungardt, age 83 years old, of Ellis, Kansas, died Monday, November 1, 2021, at Bethel Home in Montezuma, Kansas. She was born February 17, 1938, in Damar, Kansas to Dolphis Senesac and Clara (LaBarge) Senesac. She married Elmer Brungardt on September 1, 1956, in Damar. He preceded her in death on May 18, 2017. Norma loved her family and spending time with them, attending Mass and would go daily and often twice on Sunday's, for many years she maintained the votive candles at St. Mary's. She also loved to play bingo. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Daughters of Isabella, and VFW Auxiliary. Phillipsburg resident Connie Jo Springer, age 67, passed away Friday, October 29th, 2021 at the Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS.

Connie was born August 18, 1954, in Manhattan, KS the daughter of Don and Bonnie (Sowell) Springer.

Survivors include her friend Merlyn Schick of Phillipsburg; brothers 
Russell of Manhattan, Jesse of Topeka, Ronald of Manhattan, a sister Joy
 Burgess of Manhattan; and nieces , nephews, and cousins.

Edward Eugene “Ed” Jones passed away Friday, October 22, 2021 at Geary Community Hospital.&nbsp; Ed has been cremated. A visitation to celebrate his life will be 5-7 p.m. Saturday, October 30, 2021 at the Johnson Funeral Home.&nbsp;

He was born in Junction City, KS on November 23, 1966, the son of Paul and Shannon.&nbsp; He attended school in Junction City, before graduating from Redlands High School in Redlands, CA in 1985. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, later receiving a medical discharge. He lived in Florida, Tennessee and Maine before returning to Junction City in 2014.&nbsp; He worked in various occupations, retiring in 2020.&nbsp;

Ed liked being outdoors.&nbsp; He enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding his motorcycle.&nbsp; He loved his pets; two cats, and two dogs that he and his fiancé, Tammy, often took out to the lake to play.

He is survived by his children, Anthony Jones and Emilee Jones, father, Paul Jones, mother Shannon LaMunyon and her husband Dennis , fiancé, Tammy White, sister, Cindy (Bill) Ahlers, uncle and aunts Mel and Barbara Wagner and Dixie Goble, granddaughter, Abby, niece and nephew, Ariana and Chase Ahlers as well as a host of other family and friends.

He was a member of the Eagles.&nbsp; Memorial contributions may be made to the organization of the donors choosing.

Edward Eugene “Ed” Jones

Carol Joyce (Milligan) Pickerel, 83, Lawrence died Friday, October 22nd at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas.

Carol was born March 28, 1938 on her family’s farm near Clay Center, Kansas to Glen and Geraldine Milligan. She was a graduate of the Clay Center High School Class of 1956. She devoted several years to caring for her children at home, and then later worked for many years in title companies in both Lawrence and Clay Center. She was also active in her community and church, as well as spending time with her grandchildren.

Carol married Jack Pickerel in 1956 in Clay Center, Kansas, and they remained faithful to each other for 60 years until Jack’s passing in 2016. Together they had three children: Scott in 1958, Kathy in 1959, and Mark in 1968.

Carol is survived by her brother Randy and his wife Zita; her oldest son Scott and his wife Betty; her youngest son Mark and his wife Linda, along with their two sons Matthew and Alex; her deceased daughter Kathy’s husband Russell; her granddaughter Lindsay and her husband Nathan, along with their children Landon and Piper; and her grandson Spencer and his wife Katie, along with their children Luke and Emma.

Visitation for Carol will be held on Friday, October 29th at 12:30 p.m. at Neill-Schwensen-Rook funeral home in Clay Center, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

She will be interred at Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center.
