How K-State's precision agriculture research put a Clay Center farm on the global stage

&nbsp;As grasses within a pasture mature, various physical changes occur, which impact the cattle grazing them. For instance, older plants dry out and lose nutritional value, but also develop coarse stems – making cattle more susceptible to injuries involving their face and eyes.

<a href="https://ksubci.org/2024/07/26/heat-feeding-risk-management-facial-diseases-cull-criteria/" target="_blank">On a recent episode of the Cattle Chat podcast</a>, Kansas State University veterinarians recommend producers watch for lumpy jaw and wooden tongue as their pastures start getting “stemmy.”

“Green, growing grass isn’t likely to cause these problems,” said K-State veterinarian Bob

Larson. “Lumpy jaw and wooden tongue happen when the tissues of the mouth are damaged on rough textured forages.”

In the case of wooden tongue, damaging incidents to the mouth allow for germs that live within the animal to cause an infection.

“It’s not really something that cattle get from other cattle. It’s caused by bacteria that are normally in the mouth and throat area,” Larson said.

K-State veterinarian Brad White adds: “Coarse feeds and grasses can damage the mucous membranes and cause lesions.”

Cattle with wooden tongue display obvious physical symptoms, according to Larson and White.

“Their tongue gets large and tends to hang out of their mouth, making eating difficult. They look like they are panting or drooling,” Larson said.

“It gets stiff, swollen and painful,” White said. “You do not very often see an animal – a cow especially – sticking their tongue out of their mouth; they’re not doing it to play. They are doing it because their tongue won't go back in.”

Like wooden tongue, cattle contract lumpy jaw through the bacteria that inhabit their mouths.

“After an injury, (bacteria) gets into some of the other tissues of the mouth,” Larson said. “What's dangerous about that one is it can invade bone. If that happens, it becomes difficult to cure.”

Larson said when producers discover lumpy jaw and wooden tongue in their earlier stages, cattle have a better chance of recovering.

“A lot of times these cases will be treated intravenously,” he said. “This is pretty effective at bringing those two syndromes back to normal but contact your local veterinarian before making any treatment decisions.”

When examining an animal’s mouth and face for lumpy jaw and wooden tongue, Larson suggests that producers monitor the eyes as well for squamous cell carcinoma, or cancer eye.

If this affliction goes untreated, cattle may face the same fate as their lumpy jaw and wooden tongue-infected counterparts.

“Cattle can get a cancer of the eye – often in their third eyelid. If you treat it early with surgical removal of that area, those animals respond well and can go ahead and have multiple years of productive life after that,” Larson said.

However, “If that cancer spreads and it involves the bones of the head, that is not going to get better, and it is time to think about euthanasia just from an animal welfare standpoint.”

When complete the entire project will provide flood risk reduction for more than 10,000 people and save $.28 million for residential and commercial development. City commissioners were informed Tuesday that the levee build completion is estimated to end Sept. 22. The levee is located south of Tuttle Creek reservoir.

Phases one carries a $32.5 million federal expenditure budget and $11.39 million for the City of Manhattan.

Future phases two and three will include a stoplog gap and closure of a 16th Street railroad crossing. There will have to be negotiations on easements for four pieces of property. The stoplog gap will include 50-foot long steel beams that will be dropped into place with a crane.

Everybody Counts is a grassroots community effort in Manhattan organized in January 2014 in response to a report to the USD 383 Board of Education that a significant number of students were self reporting to be experiencing homelessness in the schools. The event is celebrating its ten year anniversary this summer and hosting its twelfth community celebration on Saturday, August 3 from 9am to 12pm at the Douglass Recreation Center Complex in the 900 block of Yuma Street.

Agencies and organization sit up booths in Douglass Park, the grassy area west of the Douglass

Center Annex, to share information about their services, to coordinate services with other

agencies, and to educate the public about the community’s social services resources and

needs. Many offer free services and others will have giveaways.

Inside the Douglass Community Center and Douglass Activity Center&nbsp; examples of the FREE health services community members can access from 9am to 12pm include:

• Vision screenings – Lion’s Club&nbsp;

• School physicals – Stormont Vail Health 

Mental health screenings - Pawnee Mental Health Services&nbsp;

&nbsp;Hearing screenings – Advanced Audiology&nbsp;

The Flint Hills Breadbasket will be open to provide information about its programs and services and will distribute some free items. A limited Harvesters’ commodities distribution will start at 11am from the east end of their building. In 2023, 190 individuals were served by the mini distribution.

Hy-Vee has provided a free community brunch for the past six years. It begins at 10am and is served to the first 250 people on a first come, first served basis. This is located outside on the east side of the Community Center.

The Flint Hills Area Transportation Agency provides free rides citywide on the day of the event.

There is a bus stop right in front of the Douglass Community Center making it easy for community members to attend the event.

Pilgrim Baptist Church has organized a free clothing giveaway for the past three years. The Church starts collecting donations in May and by August is bursting at the seams. However, by the end of the event there is very little clothing left.

The sponsoring organization for Everybody Counts is the Riley County Council of Social Service Agencies (RCCSSA), a 501c3 nonprofit organization.

&nbsp; &nbsp;The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the man and the vehicle pictured below in reference to a theft case. 

On Friday, July 19th, 2024, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 4000 block of HWY 99, Wamego, for the theft of a trailer. The trailer was stolen at approximately 6:44 PM on Thursday, July 18th, using a white 1997-2004 Ford F-150 extended cab truck with a black toolbox and missing the drivers side running board.

Event organizers are well aware of the impact that speakers have for those attending their particular conference.

That’s why the committee for the upcoming Eucharistic Conference in Hays chose an A-list of speakers for the conference, which promises to deepen attendees’ understanding and devotion to the Eucharist.

The list of speakers is headlined by a dynamic young bishop and other popular clergy members from around the diocese and beyond.

The conference, sponsored by Fort Hays State University’s Comeau Catholic Campus Center, is scheduled for Aug. 9-10 on the FHSU campus.

Bishop Joseph Espaillat, at 47 years of age the youngest bishop in the United States, will serve as the keynote speaker twice—on Friday night’s opening session and again on Saturday morning.

Attendees will even have a third time to hear from Bishop Joseph as he will be the homilist for Saturday’s outdoor Mass set for 5:15 p.m. on the FHSU Quad.

One Hays woman was so invigorated with Bishop Joseph’s homily at the closing Mass of the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, last fall that she jumped at the chance for all her children to hear him.

Brenda Rose, who attended the NCYC with her oldest daughter, Hannah, will be attending a cousin’s wedding in Nebraska on Saturday.

When she learned that Bishop Joseph would be she signed up her entire family for Friday evening’s sessions at the Eucharistic Conference.

“I remember watching Bishop Joseph throughout Eucharistic Adoration at NCYC, and I had never seen a priest or bishop who came so alive as he led us in adoration. His energy was contagious,” Rose said. “We didn’t learn until later that he was a bishop, and we were captivated by him during his homily. It was like he was one us, speaking directly to us and telling us exactly what all of us as Catholics need to hear.”

Several clergy and parishioners from the Salina Diocese are attending this weekend’s National Eucharist Congress in Indianapolis, the first of its kind in 83 years.

Bill Meagher, director of youth ministry, religious education and family life for the Salina Diocese, said Bishop Gerald Vincke wanted to host a conference closer to home, so soon after they returned from NCYC, plans began for making that happen. And Bishop Gerald quickly added Bishop Joseph to the list of speakers.

Father Andy Hammeke, pastor of FHSU’s Catholic Campus Center and co-vocational director for the Salina Diocese, also had a desire to bring an opportunity like this to FHSU students.

“We are really grateful for Fr. Andy and the Fort Hays students for opening up this conference to everyone in the diocese,” Meagher said.

Fr. Andy said that the bishops of the United States “decided to put on the event (in Indianapolis) in an effort to bolster Eucharistic Devotion in our country.”

“Not everybody in our diocese was able to attend, so we are honored to host our own Eucharistic Conference on the campus of Fort Hays State University,” Fr. Andy said. “We hope this will be an opportunity for people from all over Kansas and the surrounding states to increase their devotion to our Lord in the Eucharist.”

The conference will begin with registration from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in Sheridan Hall, followed by the opening session featuring Bishop Joseph in Sheridan’s Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

The evening will conclude with Adoration Under the Stars in the FHSU Quad. The next morning will feature another outdoor session with a 7 a.m. rosary at the grotto on the campus of Thomas More Prep-Marian Junior-Senior High School.

Following Bishop Joseph’s keynote session at 8:45, a variety of breakout sessions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will cover topics such as Eucharist Adoration, understanding young people and leadership for teens, and our call to serve.

Bishop Vincke and Meagher want to point out that attending even parts of the conference will have an impact.

“Don’t let the fact that you can’t make it on Friday evening or must leave early on Saturday stop you from attending,” Meagher said. “We are excited to have you join us for whatever parts you can.”

They also stressed that anyone can attend the 5:15 p.m. Saturday Mass in the Quad.

“You do not need to register for the conference to participate in the closing Mass,” Meagher said. “Everyone is invited. You will just need to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on.”

The Mass will be live streamed into Beach/Schmidt for those who have difficulty with heat or accessibility at the Quad.

“Things have become so confusing and uncertain in our world right now, and I think people are hungry for good, positive, direct messages,” Rose said. “They will get that here at this conference, and we are blessed to have this opportunity right here in our area.”

Father Gale Hammerschmidt will be joined by Sister Amy Marie Havlet as master of ceremonies.

Fr. Gale is well-known—and well-liked—around the state. He grew up in Hays and is now pastor at St. Isidore Parish on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan. Sr. Amy Marie is the vocation director for the Diocese of Lincoln.

The list of speakers also includes Bishop Gerald and Father Jarett Konrade, who served as pastor of St. Nicholas of Myra parish in Hays for several years and now is pastor of St. John the Baptist parish in Beloit. RILEY COUNTY —The cause of a fire at a duplex in Manhattan is under investigation.

Just before 1a.m. Sunday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire at 931 Connecticut Avenue, according to a media release.

First responders found a duplex with heavy fire showing from the rear of the residence. Fire companies extinguished the deck that was on fire, while other companies made an interior attack on the main body of fire and searched the residence. 

The fire was contained within 20 minutes. The occupants were not at home at the time of the fire.&nbsp; The occupants of 929 Connecticut Avenue had evacuated before the fire department's arrival. 

No injuries were reported.&nbsp;The building is a single-story residential duplex.&nbsp;The owner of 931 Connecticut Avenue is listed as Sean Luciano Schiazza of the same address.&nbsp;&nbsp;The owner of 929 Connecticut Avenue is listed as Ron and Tatiana Schwerdt of New Braunfels, Texas.

Loss is estimated at $150,000 to the structure and $30,000 of contents of 931 Connecticut Avenue and $2,000 damage to 929 Connecticut Avenue.

Riley County Arrest Report July 27

Maj. Gen. Monte Rone told a Military Affairs Council Breakfast audience in Junction City this week that Fort Riley can't be a secret.

Rone noted that his concern is always the single soldiers finding opportunities to do things, "finding unique ways that we can take care of all our Soldiers, especially single soldiers." He told the audience that their help is needed.&nbsp;

Rone also stressed that overall priorities include taking care of the soldiers and their families, being disciplined and being trained.

On another subject the Combat Aviation Brigade is back from deployment.&nbsp;

Rone said he also loved serving as the commanding general of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley. "We're in a special situation here in central Kansas."

USD 383 announced that summer meals free for ages 1-18 will continue to be served at Ogden, Marlatt, Northview, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Eisenhower Middle School through August 2nd. 

 The last day for summer meals at Bluemont, Lee and the High School will be Friday July 26th.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas Apply Free Days will be held on October 7-9, 2024.

During these three days, any Kansas resident, regardless of age or income can apply for free at any of the state's 7 public universities, 19 community colleges, 6 Technical colleges, and the 21 private member institutions of the Kansas Independent College Association. 

Eligible programs include general applications, certificate programs, associate degree programs, and bachelor degree programs. (Graduate programs or other mid-degree applications will not qualify.)

Apply Free Days set for Oct. 7-9

Manhattan Area Technical College has scheduled the ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Advanced Technology Center. The event will take place on August 29th at 4:00 PM at the new 47,000 square foot facility.

The Center will&nbsp; enhance educational opportunities and economic growth in the region. With the capacity to double enrollment in multiple existing programs, Manhattan Tech is also introducing&nbsp;three new programs for fall 2025 in Biomanufacturing, Electrician Technology, and Plumbing Technology.

"Our new Advanced Technology Center is a monumental step forward for Manhattan Tech and the entire region," said Dr. James Genandt, President of Manhattan Area Technical College. "By expanding our program offerings and providing top-notch facilities, we are preparing our students for high-demand careers while driving economic development."

The project is expected to inject $15-20 million into the regional economy.&nbsp;Additionally, 86% of Manhattan Tech graduates remain in the region. This innovative center will be home to six technical programs and a cutting-edge Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) simulation lab. The facility also boasts a versatile conference room and a modern computer lab designed for on campus use and local business and industry needs.
