Manhattan Parks and Recreation has announced via social media their plans&nbsp; to celebrate the completion of the Manhattan levee improvements and the re-opening of Linear Trail. The ceremony will take place at the Linear Trailhead parking lot at Casement Road and Hayes Drive at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 9.

General parking has been provided by the businesses along the east side of Hayes Drive. The Linear Trail parking lot will be reserved for accessibility parking. We will have a path marked from the parking lot the ceremony space for the public to use.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —The family of a woman injured&nbsp; in an&nbsp;incident that occurred near the Aggieville district in the early morning hours of Friday, August 30, are offering an additional $10,000 reward for information in the case, according to the Riley County Police Department.

The initial report received by police indicated the young woman identified as 22-year-old Keena HIbbs, was found in the 800 block of Laramie Street after walking home from a local establishment.

&nbsp;Police are reviewing surveillance footage from Aggieville and surrounding areas and are following up on any leads to determine the cause of her injuries. Police encourage anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has any information to come forward and assist with the investigation. 

Tips may be called in directly to RCPD using 785-537-2112 or you can always contact Crime Stoppers at 785-539-7777 or toll-free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous.

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 2p.m.&nbsp; Wednesday in Riley County.

A 1998 Chevy 1500 driven by&nbsp; Gary Romanski, 78, of Ogden, was traveling near Scenic Drive and Miller Parkway, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The driver lost control of the pickup. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Romanski was air-lifted to Stormont Vail Hospital for treatment of his injuries.&nbsp;

OSAGE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just after 10:30a.m. Sept. 30, a Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit conducted a traffic stop at milepost 139 on U.S. 75 highway for a traffic violation, according to Sheriff Chris Wells.

 During the stop, illegal narcotics were located. The deputy took 35-year-old Caleb M. Kidd of Abilene into custody and transported him to the Osage County Jail Facility on requested charges of Distribution of methamphetamine, Possession of drug paraphernalia and No drug tax stamp.

Kansas State University is growing the talent pool of agriculturists, engineers, business leaders and changemakers for Kansas and beyond, fulfilling its promise as&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/next-gen/">a next-generation land-grant university</a>. This fall, university enrollment grew by 2.8% for 2024.Continuing an upward trajectory, this is the second year of enrollment increases, as K-State's overall headcount this semester grew to 20,295 students across all campuses.

"Our plan to broaden the university's reach in a strategic and measured manner is a responsibility we take seriously every day," said Provost and Executive Vice President Jesse Perez Mendez. "But it is also one we celebrate, especially when we see such positive results. These numbers aren't just 20,000-plus students — they're 20,000-plus stories and opportunities to change lives."

Total undergraduate enrollment grew by 3.6%, while graduate enrollment declined 1%. Herington Elementary School has officially been named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School! School Principal Dr. Nicholas Morgan said that on September 23rd, the United States Department of Education made the announcement with only four schools in Kansas receiving this honor. 

Herington Elementary School is continuing their tradition of excellence, as this is their second time being named a National Blue Ribbon School (2007).

The U.S. Department of Education recognizes all schools based on student performance data including assessment results, student subgroup performance, and graduation rates. Schools are recognized in both or either of two performing categories:

• Exemplary High Performing Schools: These schools are among the top performers in their state as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

• Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools: These schools excel in narrowing achievement gaps between different student groups and the overall student body.

Each nominated school submits a comprehensive application detailing its school culture, programs, assessments, instructional practices, professional development, leadership, and family/community involvement.

&nbsp;The driver failed to yield the right of way at the intersection. The pickup and a southbound 2022 Ford F150 driven by Johnny R. Gibson, 42, Enterprise, collided.

EMS transported Smith and Gibson to Stormont Vail in Junction City. Two children in the 2012 pickup were in car seats and not injured. Both drivers were also properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The National Weather Service has implemented some changes to the cold weather products that they issue. These changes are effective as of today, October 1, 2024.

The products that used to be issued were called the Wind Chill Watch, Wind Chill Warning, and the Wind Chill Advisory. 

These products have been changed into the Extreme Cold Watch, Extreme Cold Warning, and the Cold Weather Advisory. 

Along with these changes, the criteria for issuing these products has changed slightly.

The main reason for these changes is to have better consistency across the US in relation to climatology of cold weather. 

These products remove any wind speed requirement and are issued when the actual temperature and/or wind chill temperature reaches these thresholds. 

Regardless of the wind speed, cold is cold!&nbsp; 

Extremely cold air comes every winter into at least part of the country and affects millions of people across the United States. The arctic air can be dangerous. Combined with brisk winds, dangerously cold wind chill values can result. 

People exposed to extreme cold are susceptible to<a href="https://www.weather.gov/safety/cold-during">&nbsp;frostbite</a>&nbsp;and can succumb to hypothermia in a matter of minutes. Areas most prone to frostbite are uncovered skin and the extremities, such as hands and feet.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.weather.gov/safety/cold-during">Hypothermia</a>&nbsp;occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Apple Day schedule is set

Fort Riley and the 1st Infantry Division invite all military retirees to attend the annual Retiree Appreciation Day Oct. 19 at Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Avenue, Fort Riley. Military retirees of all services and their spouses, widows or widowers are welcome. Doors open for registration at 7:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 8:30.

Col. Jerry Nunziato, Fort Riley Garrison Commander, will provide opening remarks to retirees, who will also hear from Col. Laudino Castillo, Irwin Army Community Hospital Commander. Throughout the day guests will get the latest information on TRICARE, Medicare, hospital services and other health care issues, veterans’ affairs, legislative issues, casualty affairs, long-term care insurance and many other topics of concern to military retirees. Many Veteran Service Organizations will also be on hand to provide information to attendees.&nbsp;

The public-health team from Irwin Army Community Hospital plans to provide vaccinations from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for influenza, shingles, pneumonia, and tetanus.

Fort Riley’s Military Retiree Appreciation Day set for October 19

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said if the longshoreman's strike that started this morning continues for long, it will be a drag on the economy back here.

&nbsp;"It will have big impacts across the nation, but particularly for agriculture and manufacturing for this part of the country, that'd be the midsection of the country, the Mid-American region, as we call it," Goss said. "The survey came out this morning of manufacturers in this part of the country, including Kansas, indicating that the supply managers have built up inventories to some degree over the course of September, just in case there was a strike."

The group has not had an extended work stoppage for decades.

"The last time this happened in 1977, it was a 44-day strike," Goss said. "If we had a 44-day strike this time, it would be punishing to the ag economy and to the manufacturing economy."

The November presidential election is just five weeks away.

"The longshoreman are asking for a 77 percent increase in wages over the next six years," Goss said.&nbsp; Of course, they're probably not going to get that, but they're going to get a pretty big chunk. That's in addition to they want to stop the automation that's going on in the ports. And of course, that's going to be tough to negotiate that. But there's some real, real pressure among workers that they've been feeling since 2020, and we're seeing that coming out right now. We'll continue to see it coming out. And they see some real, I won't say an opportunity here, but with the presidential campaign going on, there will be some action in Washington, D.C. to halt this strike, if possible."

Goss doesn't expect President Biden to invoke Taft-Hartley, at least not in the short term, but if the strike drags closer to the election, he may change his mind.

Downtown Manhattan has announced that in conjunction with Kansas State University and the Mid America Print Council they will close down Poyntz Ave for a street festival on Thursday, October 3rd from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.. 

Patrons can expect hands on demonstrations, live music and entertainment, student art exhibits from Emporia State, Wichita State and Kansas State universities, more than 20 vendors, an art scavenger hunt and printmaking demos. A dozen downtown businesses will be hosting artist work. The newest business, Switch Wicked, at 413 Poyntz Avenue will be open and allowing the public to pull their own print on totes for $10 each.

At 6 p.m. there will be a public reception for award winning artists in the Midtown Plaza art space at 116 S. 4th Street. This event will also be a legal Common Consumption Area and adults 21 years and older will be able to purchase beer and alcohol from participating establishments in the public right of way. Those include Bourbon &amp; Baker, Tallgrass Tap House, Finn’s Pub, Manhattan Brewing Co and El Patron.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating alleged theft by deception in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Just after 12:30p.m. Sunday, Sew Unique, in the 300 Block of Poyntz Avenue reported a known subject passed a check for two sewing machines that did not clear the bank. Total loss associated with this report is $3,384.

RCPD: Manhattan business lost $3,300 in alleged ID theft

RILEY COUNTY —Three people were injured in two separate weekend accidents in Riley County.

Just after 6p.m. Friday, a Ford F150 driven by Marie Freeman, 56, Manhattan, was traveling at the intersection of McCall Road and Hayes Drive, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The driver failed to yield at the red light and the pickup struck a 2018 Chevy Malibu driven by Tabitah Dobrovolny, 32, Ogden.&nbsp;&nbsp; EMS transported Freeman to Via Christi&nbsp;for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. She was also cited for failure to stop at a red light, according to the RCPD.

Just before 7:30p.m. Saturday, a 2009 GMC 2500 driven by Thomas Henton, 65, Clay Center collided with a 2022 Hyundai Accent driven by&nbsp;Kristtoffer Schrater, 45, of Marysville, according to the RCPD.

EMS transported Schrater to Via Christi for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and his passenger, Debra Schrater 35, also of Marysville was transported via Medical Flight Helicopter to Stormont Vail for treatment of her injuries. 

Henton was not injured and was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way, according to the RCPD.

MANHATTAN — A financial contribution from the estate of Donald G. and Susie R. Wilson, developed in collaboration with the KSU Foundation and Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning &amp; Design, is now the largest commitment to date for the college. Valued at approximately $13 million, the charitable trust fund established by the late Donald Wilson, a 1959 K-State architecture graduate, and his late wife, Susie, will eventually provide annual fellowships to approximately 20 APDesign students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. 

The fellowships will cover the cost of tuition, fees and books, and it will include a housing stipend. In 2016, inspired by the Wilsons' commitment, the college created the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://ksufoundation.org/give/give-to-k-state-colleges/college-architecture-planning-design/5thyear">APDesign Fifth-Year Fellowship Program</a>&nbsp;with the goal of reducing the cost of its accelerated five-year master's degree program for all students in their final year. More than 50 fellowships were awarded for the 2024-25 academic year.

"Tomorrow's architects, planners and designers will have the privilege — and responsibility — of creating spaces that improve the lives of those who experience them," Michael McClure, dean of the college, said. "It's important to us to develop a group of design professionals that reflects the diverse society we serve, and that starts with making a K-State APDesign education as affordable as possible.

"The following students received this year's fellowship through the Wilson fund:Alexis Broadbent, master's student in architecture,&nbsp;Andover; Colton Gauthier, master's student in architecture,&nbsp;El Dorado; Kara Davis, master's student in interior architecture,&nbsp;Meriden; Miguel Perez, master's student in architecture,&nbsp;Ulysses; and Devin Tilley, master's student in landscape architecture,&nbsp;Wakefield. WABAUNSEE COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Sunday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Harley Davidson driven by Douglas Charles&nbsp;Lewis, 61, Larned, was eastbound on Kansas 4 just west of Main Street.

The motorcycle rear-ended a 2013 Harley Davidson driven by Pauline Louise&nbsp;McConnell, 78, Larned, who slowed down to turn northbound onto Main Street.&nbsp; Both drivers&nbsp;were thrown from their motorcycles.&nbsp;

EMS transported Lewis to Stormont Vail and&nbsp;McConnell to St. Francis. Both were wearing helmets, according to the KHP.
