KSU students earn semester honors

Learn about and celebrate major faiths of the world at <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/world-religions-festival/">Kansas State University's World Religions Festival</a> from 7-10 p.m. Tuesday, August 27, at Forum Hall in the K-State Student Union. This free event is open to the public and will feature religious leaders from Kansas and around the world.

On the agenda is a two-hour show featuring TED-style, five-minute talks by leaders representing major world religions like Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Judaism, as well as some newer universalizing religions that merge multiple religions into one. Those include Bahai, Daesoon Jinrihoe of Korea and Cao Dai of Vietnam. Featured guests will also perform music, show videos and share spiritual practices from a wide range of religions.

Following the show, there will be a one-hour reception with free food and religious exhibits. More information about the festival's activities and represented religions <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/world-religions-festival/">can be found on the event website.</a>

"This event will really showcase that K-State is a place for all Kansans and others regardless of faith or cultural background and that this is a place that can prepare students to go anywhere in the world and build meaningful relationships across cultural differences," said Michael Wesch, festival coordinator and professor of cultural anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences.  

More than 20 guests from Vietnam, Korea and Taiwan, and religious leaders from around Kansas, will participate in the festival. This includes monks from the Buddhist Temple of Salina and, from Manhattan, Father Gale Hammerschmidt from St. Isadore's Catholic Student Center, Dr. Fatma Rahdi from the Islamic Center, Pastor Christian Watkins of Ecumenical Christian Missionaries, Miriam Edelman and David Marcus from the Manhattan Jewish Congregation, and Bruce Grover from the Bahai community.

Attendees will see K-State faculty members and students showing sides of themselves not usually seen in the classroom. Janyam — a band featuring Rekha Natarajan, teaching associate professor of mathematics, Bala Natarajan, professor of engineering, and their family — will entertain the crowd with traditional Indian instruments. 

Ramasamy Perumal, professor of agronomy, will sing verses from the Bhagavad Gita. Otto Chanyakorn, assistant professor of architecture, will lead a guided meditation from the Thai Forest Tradition. Terrell Campbell, graduate student in chemistry, West Hempstead, New York, will immerse the audience in the Black Church experience with his piano. Resonate A Capella will perform majestic renditions of Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For" and Lauren Daigle's "You Say."

"This will be a festive atmosphere bringing people from all over the world together to share their ideas about what it is to be human, how to live a good life, how to care for one another, and how to find peace, meaning and happiness," Wesch said.

Many of the international guests are familiar with K-State as they have hosted students on recent education abroad trips.

"We are excited to welcome them to our home and keep building our international relationships to create more high-impact experiences for students in the future," Wesch said.

K-State's Anthropology Club and The Alliance for Religious Exploration, Tolerance, and Education, or ARETE, are helping with event organization. ARETE is a new student organization led by Duncan Young, senior in geography, Manhattan, and its members come from a wide range of faith backgrounds to explore different religions in a spirit of openness and mutual appreciation.

The festival has received financial sponsorship from the K-State Student Union Program Council, the Dow Center for Multicultural and Community Studies, the Office of International Programs, Daesoon Jinrihoe, Weixin Shengfiao and Cao Dai.

Wesch is a Kansas State University distinguished teaching scholar and has received many awards, including a U.S. Professor of the Year award. He is best known for his videos about culture, religion and technology.

K-State to host world religions festival, celebrating global faith and culture

Riley County Arrest Report August 9

PARIS, France.&nbsp; - Tara Davis-Woodhall, an assistant coach under new K-State Wildcat track and field coach&nbsp;Travis Geopfert, walked away with Olympic gold on Thursday in the long jump, winning with a bound of roughly 23 feet, 4 inches (7.1 meters).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Davis-Woodhall was just announced as an assistant coach for the Wildcats back on Aug. 2nd.

“I’m thrilled to have Tara joining us at K-State. To say that she brings the energy is an understatement,” Geopfert said per a release. “I’ve loved coaching this young woman for the last three years and to bring her elite level experience to Manhattan is absolutely invaluable. She knows what it takes to be great, and she also fully understands the challenges of what life is like as both a student-athlete and as a professional athlete. Her mentorship of these young student-athletes is going to expedite their careers to an elite level in dramatic fashion. So excited to have TDW and her husband Hunter joining us in Manhattan!”

According to Kansas State Athletics, she graduated in 2021 from the University of Texas. She swept the 2020-21 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the long jump and was the Big 12 Outdoor Champion.

Kansas Department of Transportation maintenance crews will close an area of K-99 in Wabaunsee County next week to replace pipes under the roadway. The closure will be in place for one day, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., or until work is complete.

No marked detours will be posted. Drivers will need to use alternate routes.

The City of&nbsp; Manhattan has announced that starting&nbsp;Monday, August 26, Kimball Avenue will be reopened to east-west traffic at its intersection with Denison Avenue. There should be no further Kimball closures.

Shipping delays related to the new traffic signal for this intersection will prevent Denison from reopening to left turns. Only right-in, right-out southbound traffic will be allowed initially, for safety reasons.&nbsp;Through traffic on Kimball will not stop.

Denison Avenue will remain closed south&nbsp;of&nbsp;Kimball Avenue through the&nbsp;summer&nbsp;of&nbsp;2025. It is currently closed from Kimball to the NBAF entrance, but this closure will begin to move south along Denison as work proceeds away from the intersection.

Traffic south&nbsp;of&nbsp;this closure will need to continue to use the detour from Claflin Road to College Avenue to access Kimball Avenue to the west&nbsp;of&nbsp;the Denison intersection.

RCPD will join effort to remove impaired drivers from roadways

Manhattan, KS&nbsp;– U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the leader in the national, non-partisan movement to limit terms for elected officials, is gathering support from state lawmakers across the nation. Its mission is to get 34 states to apply for an amendment proposal convention specific to term limits on Congress. Kansas state house candidate, Angel Roeser (District 67), has committed support for term limits in Congress by signing the Term Limits Convention Pledge.

USTL President, Philip Blumel, commented on Roeser's pledge saying, “Angel's strong support of term limits shows that there are individuals who are willing to listen to the majority of voters who want term limits. America needs a Congress that will be served by citizen legislators, not career politicians.”

The U.S. Term Limits pledge is provided to candidates and members of state legislatures. It reads, “I pledge that, as a member of the state legislature, I will cosponsor, vote for, and defend the resolution applying for an Article V convention for the sole purpose of enacting term limits on Congress.”

Tomboulides noted, “More than 87% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. The way to achieve that goal is through a congressional term limits amendment. Angel knows this and is willing to work to make sure we reach our goal.”

No digging or construction work is scheduled to begin.&nbsp;Workers may need to access private property, including back yards, during this process. Expect any utility workers for water, power, gas, cable, and fiber companies to be wearing branded clothing and driving company vehicles.&nbsp;

BG Consultants, Inc. of Manhattan will be designing the new sanitary sewer collection system, lift station,&nbsp;and wastewater treatment facility. In late August and early September, BG employees will begin surveying clean outs and septic tanks to identify preliminary service line alignment after the utilities are marked. Any employees of BG Consultants, Inc. will be wearing brightly colored, high-visibility branded shirts.

If BG Consultant employees need access to areas where pets are kept, they will knock and speak with the resident before proceeding.&nbsp;“After we get the preliminary alignment figured for the sewer main, manholes, and service lines, we will get coordinated with residents on any concerns,” said Samuel Johnson, P.E. Project Engineer. The Keats Sanitary Sewer Improvements Project includes a three cell, non-discharging, HDPE lined, wastewater lagoon treatment facility. Existing septic tanks will be pumped and demolished, and all manholes, sewer mains, and service piping will be installed. The lagoon will be a state regulated and permitted project that will be maintained by Riley County.

Governor Kelly directs flags be flown at half-staff Friday

The City of Manhattan said that this full-depth replacement work is expected to last through&nbsp;late autumn 2024.

There is no detour and one-lane traffic will be maintained in both directions at all times. Drivers should expect some disruptions as various drive entrances are closed for repairs. Access to local businesses will be maintained throughout the project.

Also,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cityofmhk.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e92cc4cc1e09dc1dafa7ba9da&amp;id=c7045510c0&amp;e=8c33f27c6f">Shilling Construction</a>&nbsp;will continue milling operations this week on Anderson Avenue/Bluemont Avenue from 11th Street to Harris Drive. Repairs begin on Anderson from Seth Child to Wreath

RILEY COUNTY—There were no injuries after an kitchen fire in Manhattan.

Just after 11p.m. Monday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at 1207 Kearney Street Apartment 4, according to a media release.

Crews found a three-story apartment building with nothing showing.&nbsp; Upon investigation, crews found smoke and fire upon entering apartment 4&nbsp; in the three-story apartment building and they quickly extinguished a small fire on the stove. 

Fire damage was contained to the apartment where the fire started.&nbsp; The occupant was alerted by the smoke detectors in the apartment and was able to safely exit. There were no injuries reported. 

The occupant of apartment 4 was displaced from the residence due to fire damage.&nbsp; 

The fire department said this is a great reminder to ensure having working smoke alarms. Loss is estimated at $10,000 to the structure and $1000 to contents.&nbsp; The fire's cause was due to an unattended cooking fire.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Riley County Arrest Report August 6

GEARY COUNTY —A Junction City man died in an accident just before 3:30p.m. Monday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1996 Toyota Tacoma driven by Robert Mitchell Cleveland, 72, Junction City, was westbound on Interstate 70 just east of East Street. 

The front driver-side tire of the pickup blew. The vehicle veered into the eastbound lane and struck a 2023 Ford Bronco driven by Robert Edward George, 46, Fowler, Colorado,&nbsp; head-on.

Cleveland was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Johnson Funeral Home.&nbsp; EMS transported George and a passenger in the Ford Crystal Challene&nbsp;Cloninger, 48, Canyon City, Colorado, to Stormont Vail. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

There has been one confirmed fatality in an accident on Interstate 70 on Monday.

Eastbound traffic has been near a standstill following the accident which occurred near the 298 mile marker on Interstate 70, according to authorities. The Geary County Sheriff's Department said that they hope to have the interstate partially open around 5 p.m. Cleanup is under way.

Geary County Emergency Management confirmed that eastbound traffic is being diverted to Grandview plaza and then through Junction City.

This is the second fatal accident on I-70 near Junction City in recent days.

Each notice will include 2025 estimated ad valorem taxes and public hearing information for entities levying taxes on their property. This notice is not a tax bill. Kansas Statute authorizes local governments to levy property taxes.
