MANHATTAN —&nbsp;After a successful premiere on Kansas and Missouri public television stations, the latest Kansas State University's College of Education documentary, "<a href="https://coe.k-state.edu/about/documentaries/becoming-trauma-responsive.html" target="_blank">Becoming Trauma Responsive</a>," is headed nationwide thanks to a distribution partnership with&nbsp;<a href="https://ktwu.org/about/" target="_blank">KTWU</a>, the&nbsp;Topeka&nbsp;public television station, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aptonline.org/" target="_blank">American Public Television</a>. In August, more than 250 public broadcast stations across the country will start airing the program. It will be available in all 50 states. "Becoming Trauma Responsive"&nbsp;details the changes two schools in Kansas and a preschool in Missouri implemented to meet the social and emotional needs of their students and staff because of the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;Topics explored in the film include teaching self-regulation, identifying the stress response system, creating an environment that helps students overcome stress, developing a tolerance for change and establishing self-care routines for educators and caregivers.&nbsp;These techniques were substantiated by trauma experts who have spent decades working in counseling, therapy and neuroscience. "For years, educators have sought out resources to become more trauma-equipped, but the pandemic has truly awakened the need for immediate support," said Debbie Mercer, dean of the College of Education. "Our sincerest hope is that this documentary — and the voices of professionals, some of whom are survivors of trauma themselves — provides direction for educators and caregivers, as well as inspires others to become teachers and school counselors." Junction City Community Band established a scholarship fund in 1998 in memory of Jack Moore, a percussionist and former member of the band. The scholarship pays most of the cost of sending student members of the band to a summer band camp.&nbsp;

This year they have announced two scholarship recipients: Mariah Wyche, tenor saxophone, Junction City and Favian Gomez, trumpet, Manhattan. They will be attending the High Plains Music Camp at Fort Hays State University in July.

Manhattan Hy-Vee is now offering a new food option in their store, opening the fourth Wahlburgers location in Kansas on Tuesday.

Wahlburgers is the creation of Paul Wahlberg, brother of singer, Donnie Wahlberg and actor, Mark Wahlberg.

Menu items include mouth-watering burgers, sandwiches, salads and appetizers.

Ordering can be done at the Order and Pay Station or when seated at the bar inside the dining area.

"We're just hoping we can live up to the expectation." Hy-Vee Manhattan, store manager, Steve Rich says.

Wahlburgers is open from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, with dine-in  and carryout options.

With Independence Day less than a week away, local first responders are reminder residents of how to be safe while enjoying fireworks over the holiday weekend.&nbsp;

The Riley County Police Department has posted reminders of the ordinances across Riley County explaining when and where fireworks can be used.&nbsp;

Additionally, Manhattan Fire Department reminds residents to have a water source, such as a bucket or garden hose nearby, in case the fireworks don't extinguish themselves.

As for shooting off fireworks, Manhattan Fire Department, says there are a few ways that are not only unsafe, but also against the law.

"Don't shoot them off towards people, don't point them in that direction, you can't throw them at anybody. Those are actually illegal or unlawful." Manhattan Fire Department, Capt. Lou Kaylor says.

Many fireworks can get really hot and be unsafe for children. MFD suggests having adult supervision when children are handling fireworks, including sparklers.

"Some safety tips: Don't hold them in your hand. Wear goggles when you light them off. Have adult supervision, if you're going to have a lot of children around. Make sure they are far enough away from buildings, and not under trees or under carports or garages or even inside for that matter." Kaylor says.

If you do have an emergency, whether it's an injury or fire caused by fireworks Manhattan Fire Department officials ask you to call 9-1-1 immediately so first responders will be dispatched to your area.

All children older than 6 months of age are eligible for vaccination. A parent or legal guardian must be present for any child under 18. According to a news release from Riley County, both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are available for this age group. The Health Department does not charge any fees for COVID-19 vaccines. “The vaccine shipment arrived today and we will be ready to see young patients starting Thursday,” said Local Health Officer and Health Department Director Julie Gibbs. “Vaccines are the best way to provide durable protection from the virus and guard against potential complications from severe disease. If you have questions, talk with your child’s pediatrician. They will know the most about your child’s particular medical needs and will be able to provide appropriate medical advice.” Local pediatricians will also be administering COVID-19 vaccines to young children. Walk-ins are welcome at the health department or people can schedule appointments by calling (785) 776-4779 ext. 7675. COVID-19 vaccinations for young children begin June 30

MANHATTAN - The <a href="https://www.flinthillsbreadbasket.org/">Flint Hills Breadbasket</a> has served the Manhattan and Riley County community since 1983, with the goal of minimizing hunger and poverty by making food accessible.&nbsp;

Executive Director Karla Hagemeister joined the Flint Hills Breadbasket in March and has been finding ways to make food even more accessible, and make the visits to the food pantry more like visiting a grocery store.&nbsp;

One of the ways she improved the experience was using a grant from the Dean Coughenour Trust to purchase a refrigerated cooler to display fresh produce and dairy products for clients to choose from.&nbsp;

"All of the food that is in this cooler right now is food that came from our local groceries stores over the weekend. We do a run every morning to the different grocery stores in town and pick up the food they are donating." Flint Hills Breadbasket, executive director, Karla Hagemeister says.

Previously, dairy and produce items were rolled out of the cooler on a metal rack, this new cooler gives the food greater appeal, and provides a safer way to offer these perishable items.&nbsp;

Hagemeister says the Flint Hills Breadbasket has been serving an average of 30 families per day since April.

The Flint Hills Breadbasket partnerships with local businesses and community members is what allows them to continue to serve the Riley County and Manhattan community.&nbsp;

Project explores the life of native Kansan Gordon Parks

MANHATTAN, Kan. – A group of 4-H members from Kansas and Ohio recently got together through an interstate exchange program to discover similarities and differences between programs in their two states.&nbsp;

Ten 4-H members aged 11 to 18 travelled from Van Wert, Ohio and were paired with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;members from Riley, Pottawatomie and Clay counties. The youth were strategically matched so they would be staying with someone of a similar age and interests. &nbsp;

“It’s a great experience for the kids to make connections with other youth and learn about a different state,” said Cherie Trieb, the Kansas 4-H exchange program coordinator.&nbsp;

During their week-long stay, the members traveled to the State Capitol building in Topeka, Fort Riley military base, and the Strataca salt mines in Hutchinson, among other stops. When the group didn’t have plans, Kansas host families were free to take their exchange delegate to see other sights in the area. &nbsp;

“It was fun visiting the waterfalls and seeing those,” said Katie Gamble, one of the Ohio delegates, referring to the Geary Lake waterfalls.&nbsp;

Gamble also noticed differences between agricultural operations in Kansas and Ohio. “There were a lot of cattle farms and grass (in Kansas) whereas we have more farmland,” she said.&nbsp;

Beyond sightseeing and visiting parts of the Kansas agricultural industry, Trieb said another purpose of the exchange is to share ideas between the two states’ 4-H programs. &nbsp;

“One unique thing that 4-Hers in Kansas are doing is they have groups that kids from different counties can join, so that there are more people to (interact) with,” Gamble said.&nbsp;

Chayla Maichel, who was Gamble’s Kansas host, had similar insights about the two exchange programs.&nbsp;

“The Ohio group was a (local) 4-H club, unlike ours that pulls members from different clubs in three counties,” she said, “When they host (exchange trips in Ohio), they always get together in the evening whether or not they did an activity during the day. They believe that helps the visiting 4-Hers adjust and allows all of them to interact and form friendships.”&nbsp;

Learning aside, Maichel noted that the real treasure at the end of the trip is the connections youth have made with each other.&nbsp;

“Hosting someone in your home that you have never met before and forming a friendship is such a valuable experience.” Maichel said.&nbsp;

To complete the exchange, the Kansas 4-H members are planning to travel to Ohio in the summer of 2023. The goal is for most of the youth to be paired with the same delegates they hosted this summer.&nbsp;

FORT RILEY, Kan. - The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley hosted a Victory With Honors Ceremony at Victory Hall, Fort Riley this past Friday. The ceremony honored the outgoing 1ID Deputy Commanding General-Support, Brig. Gen. Geoffrey A. Norman, and welcomed the division's first female Deputy Commanding General-Support, Brig. Gen. Niave F. Knell also received a Bachelor of Science degree in Comparative Politics, a Master of Science degree in Business and Organizational Security Management from Webster University, a Master of Advanced Military Studies degree from the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and a Master of Science in National Security Strategy from National War College. "I'm honored to serve in this position, I really thank [Maj.] Gen. Meyer, Command Sgt. Maj. Mullinax, and the rest of the command team for having such an amazing vision for Fort Riley, and I am proud to serve that mission," said Knell. City-wide storm debris clean up continues in Manhattan, and has been extended following the additional storms last week.

Storm <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/cc347692-a888-4f21-b255-9244ed4d4ea6">debris clean-up</a> was initially scheduled to be completed by Monday, June 27th.&nbsp;

With the added debris, it has taken crews longer to <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/562f4084-fe8f-4396-b91e-03a9b3af6d62">clean up the initial area</a> in the southeast area of Manhattan, which they finished on Friday, June 24th.

“If there’s any good news in this, it’s that the June 21st storm largely affected the Northview area, that had not been as affected by the June 11th storm and thus it was last on the list, so there’s been time for that area to be collected and gathered to the curb as well and we’ll take it."&nbsp;City of Manhattan, public information officer, Andrew Lawson says. "Yes, this has compounded what we have to do but it’s actually sort of worked out timing-wise.”&nbsp;

Starting June 27th, crews started working to clean up debris from the curbs in the north central portion of Manhattan.

The United Way is organizing volunteers to help neighbors with debris clean-up and connect them with residents who need assistance with clean-up. You can contact the United Way by calling 2-1-1.

City of MHK free storm debris removal update

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects involved in a violent altercation in Riley County.

Just after 5p.m. Sunday, officers filed a report for aggravated kidnapping, battery, and driving while suspended in the 100 block of Riley Ave. in Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 38-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man as both the victims and suspects reported the woman entered the man's truck and he then drove off while hitting her. 

It was reported she then pulled the keys from the ignition, and got out, a fight ensued between them and he he drove off from the scene after two bystanders stopped. 

The man was later found driving east on K-18 and stopped by officers near the intersection of S. Seth Child Rd. and Southwind Road. 

Both the man and woman were seen by EMS for their injuries but were not transported.

Jackie Mundt, Pratt County farmer and rancher Harvest is a farmer’s Super Bowl. It’s the culmination of a year’s work and his way to measure success. After the last load of wheat heads to town, there is a final buzz of activity. Equipment is cleaned and put away, paperwork sorted and other things neglected during harvest are checked on. The stress of constant activity, anticipation and worry, ebbs and there is room to breathe; a moment of thankfulness and rest. That brief rest is a special time for a farm family. Though a farmer’s work is never done, a fresh sense of accomplishment reminds a farmer that even God rested occasionally. The win of harvest gives farm families a small window for a holiday. Marc and I love both love to plan trips and travel to fun destinations, but he often struggles to commit to plans far enough in advance to book tickets or make firm commitments with friends. He can’t predict the weather, if irrigators will break down, when crops will be ready to harvest, if cattle fences will need unexpected mending, a storm causing damage or all the other unpredicted but steady tasks that keep farmers busy 365 days a year. But when the stars align, a brief vacation is in order. We love to grab a road map and snacks and jump in the car for a day of exploring the hidden gems of our neighboring towns in Kansas. Some people may read this and think I mean Wichita, Kansas City or one of our larger cities. Though these cities have some wonderful attractions, they are rarely the focus of our Kansas adventures. A little over a decade ago when I first moved here, the Kansas Sampler Foundation had just completed their “8 Wonders of Kansas” publications. This year our postharvest adventure started with my dad’s (a farmer who sees helping during wheat harvest as his annual vacation) interest in the Kansas Motorcycle Museum in Marquette. Lunch at the Ranch House, an extensive and well maintained motorcycle collection and a very trendy and cool Smoky Hill Distillery awaited us on Main Street in Marquette. Next we decided to travel to neighboring Lindsborg for the view from Coronado Heights, the Old Mill Museum and the Dala Horse artists at Hemslojd. We meandered home through Lyons for a tasty dinner at the County Seat. Our day in towns with less than 4,000 people included rare items, interesting culture and history, great food and drink, and wonderful family memories. Small town Kansas may not be on the top of your vacation bucket list, but it is full of interesting people who freely share their passion with the people who step into their towns every day. That is what make traveling through our state so amazing. The next time you have a moment to pause for an adventure, I hope you will get out and see what the small towns around our state have to offer. Maybe I will see you there.

Jackie Mundt, Pratt County farmer and rancher Harvest is a farmer’s Super Bowl. It’s the culmination of a year’s work and his way to measure success. After the last load of wheat heads to town, there is a final buzz of activity. Equipment is cleaned and put away, paperwork sorted and other things neglected during harvest are checked on. The stress of constant activity, anticipation and worry, ebbs and there is room to breathe; a moment of thankfulness and rest. That brief rest is a special time for a farm family. Though a farmer’s work is never done, a fresh sense of accomplishment reminds a farmer that even God rested occasionally. The win of harvest gives farm families a small window for a holiday. Marc and I love both love to plan trips and travel to fun destinations, but he often struggles to commit to plans far enough in advance to book tickets or make firm commitments with friends. He can’t predict the weather, if irrigators will break down, when crops will be ready to harvest, if cattle fences will need unexpected mending, a storm causing damage or all the other unpredicted but steady tasks that keep farmers busy 365 days a year. But when the stars align, a brief vacation is in order. We love to grab a road map and snacks and jump in the car for a day of exploring the hidden gems of our neighboring towns in Kansas. Some people may read this and think I mean Wichita, Kansas City or one of our larger cities. Though these cities have some wonderful attractions, they are rarely the focus of our Kansas adventures. Freedom Fest JC and Sundown Salute start their five-day runs Thursday and continue through July 4th.&nbsp;

Freedom Fest JC opens Thursday night with the WEEE carnival. Friday night the lineup includes performances by Disco Dick and the Mirror Balls plus Paramount, an 80's rock tribute band. On Saturday the 1st Infantry Division Rock Band, a 1st Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade Fly Over, the Rock Gods, Fireworks Extravaganza and street dance are on the schedule.

Sunday evening Brandon Estelle and Rhett Walker will perform with both of those presented by the Geary County Ministerial Association. Monday the evening lineup include Run With It, a pop rock band and the headliner Casi Joy followed by fireworks.

Sundown Salute features rock &amp;&nbsp; roll music including Godesses of Rock and The Hype on Thursday evening, on Friday country &amp; western performers Tate Stevens and Ricochet ,&nbsp; Saturday rock &amp; roll groups Special Forces and Peace, Love &amp; Music, Sunday country &amp; western groups Queens of Country and Diamond Rio and on Monday, July 4th the 1st Infantry Division Rock Band, Silver Bullet and Foghat plus a fireworks show at 10 p.m. There will be a car show in Milford hosted on Saturday by the Central Kansas Ruff Ryders.

Fourth of July celebrations begin this week

&nbsp;Flags have been ordered to be flown at half-staff on Wednesday to honor a fallen Kansas volunteer firefighter.

<a href="https://governor.kansas.gov/" target="_blank">Kansas Governor Laura Kelly</a>&nbsp;says that in accordance with Executive Order 20-30, she has ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff on Wednesday, June 29, to honor fallen Linn Co. volunteer firefighter&nbsp;Joshua Haynes.

Haynes had been working with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linncountyks.com/departments/fire-department-2" target="_blank">Rural Co. Fire District 1</a>&nbsp;department when he suffered fatal injuries battling a blaze at a chiropractic office in Pleasanton on Monday.

“I am directing flags statewide be flown at half-staff to honor Joshua Haynes, a volunteer firefighter from Linn County,” Gov. Kelly said. “My deepest condolences are with Joshua’s loved ones and the Linn County community during their time of loss. His bravery and service to our state will never be forgotten.”

Kelly noted that Haynes will be interred during services held on Wednesday.

Accessing public lands for hunting, fishing just got easier

MARYSVILLE -&nbsp;Marysville Police have warned residents that catalytic converters have been stolen from businesses in the area and has given tips to help owners deter thefts.

Since the start of June, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cityofmarysvilleks.com/police-department" target="_blank">Marysville Police Department&nbsp;</a>says at least two businesses have reported catalytic converters have been stolen from vehicles on their properties.

According to RCPD, scammers will use many methods and show up in different forms.

RCPD says residents should verify any employer before sending personal information or applying for any job, as scammers are using job ads as ways to steal your information.

Residents have been contacted by individuals claiming to work for utility companies, such as Evergy, saying there's an issue with the bill and phone payment is necessary to keep the power on.

Riley County Police Department says you should never give out your personal or financial information to unknown sources.

RCPD says if someone contacts you to resolve an outstanding payment by using gift cards, it is a scam.

If you receive a call that seems questionable, hang up from the call and immediately contact RCPD on the non-emergent line, 785-537-2112 to verify.

CLAY CENTER - In just two years, A Mural Movement of Clay Center has gained support of the community and beautified the town with a variety of murals.&nbsp;

Originally, the group wanted to bring quality public art to the area and bring more people to downtown Clay Center.&nbsp;

The town has become a tourist destination, with murals made using different styles of art are spread all over town for visitors to explore.&nbsp;

Support for the project has come from community members and grants, bringing in artists from across the country to leave behind a masterpiece.&nbsp;

CStanley Creative is a husband and wife team from central Florida, Christian and Jessica have ties to Kansas. Jessica was born near Shawnee Mission and still has family in the area.

“We've been kind of looking forward to doing this project for, for quite a few months now. So, we're just excited to be here and the rains cleared up so we're excited to bring this thing to life” CStanley Creative artist, Christian Stanley says.

The artists plan to have the mural completed by July 2nd, just in time for visitors over the holiday weekend to enjoy.

 </figure>by BECKY GOFF Little Apple PostCLAY CENTER - In just two years, A Mural Movement of Clay Center has gained support of the community and beautified the town with a variety of murals.&nbsp;Originally, the group wanted to bring quality public art to the area and bring more people to downtown Clay Center.&nbsp;The town has become a tourist destination, with murals made using different styles of art are spread all over town for visitors to explore.&nbsp;Support for the project has come from community members and grants, bringing in artists from across the country to leave behind a masterpiece.&nbsp;“The community support has just been so overwhelming. Mural Movement brings Fla. artists to Clay Center for 25th mural

WAMEGO - Former Wamego Police Chief Michael Baker has filed a grievance with the city over his firing.

Baker told 13 NEWS he took the action Friday. The city has three days to respond.

Wamego City Manager Stacie Eichem <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/dae9381f-1eaf-4cfa-8352-ca93a54a0e5d">fired Baker Wednesday</a>. She had informed by letter June 14 that&nbsp;he was suspended&nbsp;for one week. The two were supposed to meet Monday, June 20 about his reinstatement. Instead, Baker said he showed up and was told the meeting was postponed to Wednesday.

At the&nbsp;Wamego City Commission meeting Tuesday night, dozens of people packed the room to support Baker, Baker and his wife also addressed the body.

The next morning, Baker said he was given a letter, telling him his employment with the city was over.

Baker said the letter stated the reasons as insubordination, inability to get along with fellow employees, and conduct unbecoming a city employee. However, Baker said he has not been told any specifics as to what he supposedly did wrong.

In an&nbsp;interview Wednesday with 13 NEWS, Baker thanked the community for their support.

13 NEWS has tried to speak to Eichem as the situation has unfolded over the past two weeks, but she has declined comment.

Fired Wamego Police Chief files grievance

MANHATTAN -&nbsp;Manhattan Fire Department has grown their force by eight new firefighters on Friday.

Three full time firefighters and 5 student firefighters have graduated from Manhattan Fire Academy.

“Developing those relationships throughout all of the physically demanding stuff and mentally demanding stuff and all the tasks we had to perform and just really building a bond with all the guys in the academy, it’s been a blast.” Manhattan Fire Department Student Firefighter, Liv Lubbers says.

During graduation, each firefighter was pinned by a family member before receiving their helmets.

"It feels partially surreal. It's something I've wanted for a really long time, and it...it's here. I'm really happy obviously and I'm really proud of the work that my teammates and I have accomplished." Manhattan Fire Department Probationary Firefighter, Benjamin Gomez says.

The firefighters will go through a probationary year, as part of the fire department protocol.

The graduates presented a restored piece of fire equipment with picture of their class to the Department as a memento of the class.
