RILEY COUNTY—A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just after 4p.m. Saturday in Riley County.

A Chrysler 200 driven by Charlotte Velazquez, 27, Milford, hit a sign and rolled at the intersection of Tuttle Creek Blvd. and Stockdale Park Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

EMS transported Velasquez to Via Christi for treatment of neck pain, according to the RCPD.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.

MANHATTAN - Kansas State University College of Agriculture has received a pledge of $5 million from Kansas Farm Bureau, over the next five years to support the new innovation centers planned for the College.

This is the largest donation pledge for the Kansas Farm Bureau.

The new innovation centers will work to develop and diversify the food and agricultural economy both in Kansas and across the world.

The project will create new facilities, renovate current buildings and immprove the technology and equipment available enhancing the student experience in the College of Agriculture.

"We've known for a long time the facilities at the country's first land-grant institution needed updating," said Rich Felts, president of Kansas Farm Bureau. "We're excited to come alongside President Linton to make an investment in our industry, our state and future students to ensure K-State remains in its position as a global leader in agriculture.  

"Kansas Farm Bureau's gift ensures that K-State will continue to positively impact the lives of Kansas farmers and the Kansas economy," Felts said.

JUNCTION CITY - Hundreds of visitors made their way to the second annual <a href="https://www.junctioncityoktoberfest.com/">Oktoberfest</a> on Washington Street this weekend.

With events for all ages, festival-goers found a variety of entertainment options while at the festival.

Kids climbed rock walls and had fun in bounce houses and on inflatables.

Men and women competed to see who could win the Hammerschlagen contest which required contestants to hit a nail into a stump, while using the angled end of the hammer head.

There were also stein-hoisting and stein carrying competitions, along with a yodeling competition.

Food and beverage vendors served dishes and drinks following the German theme for Oktoberfest.

The festival came to a close on Saturday evening following a concert in the street by the KC All Stars.

2nd annual Oktoberfest brought thousands to Washington Street in JC

Following an extensive investigation, on Sunday at approximately 6 p.m. the Junction City Police Department Arrested Joshua Sturgis a 34 year old resident of Junction City on the following requested charges in connection with the Sunday morning shooting death of Justin Rose, 38, Junction City.

During their investigation Detectives identified Sturgis as the primary suspect. The Missouri Highway Patrol located and initiated a traffic stop on Sturgis detaining him in Saint Charles County Missouri. Junction City Police Department Detectives then traveled and placed Sturgis under arrest on the charges.

Sturgis is currently being held in Saint Charles County Missouri on a $1,000,000 bond pending extradition. The Junction City Police&nbsp; Department thanked the Missouri Highway Patrol, Geary County Sheriff’s Office, Junction City Fire Department, and the Saint Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

Junction City police have confirmed that on on Sunday at approximately 0200 hours the Junction City Police Department was dispatched to the 900 block of North Washington for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival officers located one man subject suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Geary Community Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The victim has been identified as Justin J. Rose, 38, Junction City. This is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Junction City Police Department at (785) 762-5912 or submit a tip through the crime stoppers hotline (785) 762-8477. Information submitted that helps lead to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward through Crime Stoppers. No further information is available at this time

UPDATE: JCPD: 34YO JC resident, arrested in Missouri, in connection with homicide

MANHATTAN-Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 2500 Farm Bureau Road just before 8:45 pm on Friday.

When crews arrived on scene they found a mobile home on fire.

Crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire within 10 minutes of arriving on scene.

The home was being renovated and no one was home at the time of the fire.

The home is considered a complete loss.&nbsp; Damage is estimated at $15,000 to contents and $20,000 to the structure.&nbsp; The cause of the fire remain under investigation.

More details will be added as they become available.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by Jacob N. Hahn, 22, Maysville, Missouri, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of Tallgrass Road.

The van rear-ended a 2009 Peterbilt semi driven by Roy D. Thompson, 62, Houston, Texas. After impact Hahn lost control of the van and it traveled into the ditch.

EMS transported Thompson to Via Christi in Manhattan. Hahn was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Cheyenne was last known to be wearing a black shirt and black jeans, with black Converse shoes.

Cheyenne is 5'6" tall, weighs approximately 150 pounds with brown eyes and dyed black hair.

MANHATTAN - Kansas State University Gardens held groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday afternoon for the new, privately-funded&nbsp; reflecting pool at the north end of the gardens.

The new reflecting pool will resemble the original pool from the original university gardens which were located near Anderson and Holtz halls but was removed in 1978 to build Bluemont Hall.

"There are three adjoining pools to be constructed," K-State Gardens Director Scott McElwain said. "The reflecting pool is the middle pool, which will be raised and chlorinated to limit algae growth, while the two narrower outer pools are not chlorinated, allowing us to grow aquatic plants such as water lilies."

The trio of reflecting pools will by 50 feet by 28 feet and construction of the project is expected to start on October 1st and cost nearly $1 million, with completion of the project expected in January 2023.

Four Manhattan families have worked with the KSU Foundation to assist with funding for the reflecting pool construction, including&nbsp;Leland and Janice Reitz; Don and Linda Glaser; Dan and Beth Bird; and Warren and Carol Weibert.

The Friends of the K-State Gardens Board raised $205,000 at the 'Plant a Seed to Grow the Gardens' dinner auction, to use for the reflecting pool project.

A representative of Phi Gamma Delta contacted RCPD after finding the front door to the fraternity had been damaged by eggs being thrown at it.

Phi Gamma Delta is located in the 1900 block of Hunting Avenue in Manhattan.

The estimated loss caused by the damage is approximately $1,500.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A Kansas woman died in a crash just after 8:00 p.m. Tuesday in Pottawatomie County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder driven by&nbsp; Stefanie L. Turner, 42, Wamego, was westbound in the 15,000 Block of Elm Slough Road. 

The driver lost consciousness and the SUV traveled off the roadway to the left.

Gridiron Glory: Congratulations John Freeman!

On Tuesday afternoon, Riley County Fire District #1 was notified of a vehicle fire located near Fairview Church Road and Walnut Creek Road in northern Riley County.

Volunteer fire fighters found a John Deere silage chopper on fire when they arrived on scene.

Fire crews extinguished the fire in an hour and kept it from spreading to neighboring fields.

Seven volunteer firefighters responded to the scene with three fire trucks. The damage estimate was not immediately available, however the John Deere was determined to be a total loss.

WAMEGO — UPDATE: As of 09/28/2022, the Wamego Police Department has posted to their Facebook page stating Sarah White was located and is safe.

WPD also thanked the public for their assistance in locating Sarah.&nbsp;

According to a post made by the Wamego Police Department on Facebook, 17-year-old, Sarah White left her home in Wamego several days ago and has not returned home.

WPD said it is believed that Sarah is in the Manhattan area.&nbsp;

Just after 10p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for theft in the 70 block of John Pride Lane. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 51-year-old woman reported her unlocked car was entered and a Calvin Klein purse containing various cards and $862 cash was stolen from inside.

RCPD: Woman's purse containing $862 taken from unlocked car

MANHATTAN - Researchers at Kansas State University will be modernizing recommendations on how nitrogen is applied to sorghum in a three-state area, thanks to a $2 million grant they recently received.&nbsp;

K-State Research and Extension environmental quality specialist Peter Tomlinson says the $2 million grant is part of a $65 million award to the National Sorghum Producers as part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usda.gov/climate-solutions/climate-smart-commodities" target="_blank">Partnerships for Climate Smart Commodities</a>&nbsp;project, under the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

This five-year grant was announced in mid-September.

“This is a watershed day for the sorghum industry,” said Tim Lust, CEO of the National Sorghum Producers, calling sorghum a “resource-conserving crop. We appreciate the USDA for the opportunity to realize sorghum’s potential as a climate-smart commodity.”

Lust says the initial focus will be on low carbon fuel markets, with the overal project creating a pathway to quantify, track and verify the impact of sorghum production-related practices intended to&nbsp;“monetize these practices in ecosystems services markets of all kinds.”

K-State's work will be part of the three-state effort, according to Tomlinson, they will work along side colleagues from Oklahoma State and Texas A&amp;M University.

“One of the things we had hoped to do in the last couple years is to modernize our soil fertility recommendations for grain sorghum,” Tomlinson said. “This project will provide funding to do that, particularly around our recommendations for applying nitrogen.”

In Manhattan, Kansas, field trials will be led by Dorivar Ruiz Diaz, a professor of soil fertility and nutrient management. In Hays, Kansas, soil scientist, Augustine Obour, will lead the field trials; and in Colby, Kansas, field trials will be led by Lucas Haag, northwest area agronomist.

Oklahoma and Texas researchers will set up similar trials, with most of the work being in dryland settings, however, Tomlinson says, some of the trials in Texas will be completed with limited irrigation.

“We believe that through all of these combined efforts over the next four years, we will be able to modernize and advance the N recommendations for grain sorghum across the region,” Tomlinson said.&nbsp;

Modernizing the recommendations for nitrogen in sorghum production should allow producers to maximize yields after applying nitrogen in the proper amounts, according to Tomlinson.

“The other piece of that,” he said, “is when they develop a carbon intensity score (a measure of hydrocarbons emitted versus the amount of energy consumed) for grain sorghum, nitrogen plays an important part in that calculation. Through this work, if we can find that we can reduce nitrogen recommendations even by a couple percentage points, we may be able to ultimately reduce that carbon intensity score for grain sorghum.”

While the grant is funded for five years, Tomlinson hopes to complete the project in four years,&nbsp;“so that we have time in the final year to communicate the findings and incorporate those into our extension programs across the region.”

“We’ll see how the fertility trials pan out over the next couple of years, but if we can optimize our nitrogen application rates, that comes with the added benefits of reducing nitrogen runoff and leaching,” he said. “It speaks to the overall sustainability efforts of improving our crop production systems. Water quality is essential to my position, and even though we won’t be directly looking at water quality, we know that there are added benefits to the crop production system if we can optimize our nitrogen rates and reduce excess nitrogen.”

by BECKY GOFF Little Apple Post UPDATE:&nbsp;POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY - The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office says both girls were located safe in Topeka. ————————POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY - The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office is asking for assistance from the public to locate two runaway female teenagers.

The pair were last seen around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, at their residence in Onaga, Kansas.

Grace Michaels,&nbsp;a 16 year old white female with brown hair and green eyes. She is 5' 4" and weighs approximately 110 pounds.

Grace was last seen wearing a white t-shirt with 'Full Throttle' emblem and black pants.

Eva Failer is a 16 year old female with dyed blonde hair and brown eyes. She weighs approximately 110 pounds, and is 5'4" tall.

Eva was last seen wearing a pink top with a lightweight black sweater and black pants.

The pair walked away from the residence in an unknown direction of travel, however it's believed they are headed to St. Marys.&nbsp;

UPDATE: Two teenage females from Onaga have been located 

JEFFERSON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 8:30p.m. Saturday in Jefferson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 GMC Sierra driven by Shawn E. Ridgeway,&nbsp; 58,Topeka was westbound on Kansas 4 Highway in the city of Meriden. 

The pickup crossed the center line into the path of an eastbound 2022 Kenworth semi driven by Adrian M. Fulmore, 49, Junction City.&nbsp; Both vehicles collided in the eastbound lanes of traffic.

EMS transported both driver to Stormont Vail in Topeka. They were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The three day long festival kicked off on Friday, with volunteer packaging more than 101,000 meals.

On Saturday, crowds gathered throughout the afternoon to listen to local and regional Christian musicians perform, along with exploring vendor booths.

Saturday evening, Cory Asbury took the main stage and entertained the crowd with his songs and engaged the crowd in multiple 'repeat after me' songs.

On Sunday, Praisefest welcomed the crowd back to the festival grounds for a worship service to wrap up with weekend.

🎥: Hundreds gather for 10th annual Praisefest in Manhattan

Fort Riley's Fall Apple Day Festival is the largest annual, free festival on Fort Riley which is open to the public.

Helicopters, tanks, and other equipment were on display for exploration.

Demonstrations were put on throughout the day by the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard and with the military working dogs, to showcase what the groups do.

"We just figured if we targeted that younger generation, right, cause this...that's what we want, we're afraid that the heritage and the traditions are gonna go away, that if we target that, one: we are satisfying our older generation, because they don't want it to go away either. We've entertained the kids, so mom and dad are happy and we've just hit the whole spectrum, and it's just an honor to get to do what we do." Fort Riley's Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard, 1SGT Roy Walters says.

Apple pies, made using Libby Custer's 'secret recipe' were available for purchase, and were used in a pie eating competition during the festival.

Volunteers dressed up and performed as historical reenactors, including the Pie Queens, who oversee the pie making and assist with the event.

The Third Thursday events in Downtown Manhattan came to a close with a street festival filled with entertainment.

Live music, vendors and artists lined the 300 and 400 blocks of Poyntz Avenue, to bring the Third Thursday season to a close.

The final Third Thursday brought crowd out to watch the stein hoisting competition. Competitors had to hold stein full of water at shoulder height with the arm extended in front of them.

Children of all ages finished painting the last mural in front of the Downtown Manhattan office space.

The Box Turtles performed on stage in the middle of Poyntz Avenue for the crowd before moving inside Finn's to close out the night.
