MANHATTAN - On Veterans Day, students at Amanda Arnold Elementary School received a special visit from soldiers from Fort Riley, who arrived in a Blackhawk helicopter on the field outside the school.

Students excitedly waited on the basketball courts for their special guests to arrive.

As the helicopter got closer to the school the children cheered in anticipation, excited to see the soldiers and helicopter up-close.

After the helicopter landed and the soldiers exited, the students started chanting 'U-S-A.'&nbsp;

Students in each grade got the opportunity to check out the helicopter and ask the soldiers questions about the helicopter and what they do.

Once all the students visited with the helicopter crew, the Blackhawk departed and returned to Fort Riley.

This experience was organized by Amanda Arnold Elementary School parent, Brian Williamson and music teacher, Drew Horton.

TOPEKA (AP) —The Kansas State Board of Education on Thursday recommended that the state's public school districts eliminate Native American mascots and branding to reduce their harmful impacts on students.

The board approved a motion making a “strong recommendation” that Kansas public K-12 nontribal schools retire Native American-themed mascots and branding as soon as possible but within the next three to five years at the latest.

Supporters stressed the board's action was only a recommendation and the final decision on mascots was left to local school boards, adding the decision would not impact districts' accreditation. They said the vote fits with the board's policies on discouraging bullying and encouraging equity, inclusion and justice for all students.

The intent of the motion, supporters said, was to prompt discussions about the racist aspects of the mascots and their negative impact on Native American students.

Board member Melanie Haas said the motion lays the groundwork for those conversations.

“There are districts that aren’t having these conversations, or that are having a hard time with those discussions," Haas said. "So when we take a leadership role at the state level and say this is something you should look at, I think that’s really important messaging that some of those districts need.”

Michelle Dombrosky, the only board member to oppose the motion, said it wasn't a state board issue. She suggested supporters should work to build relationships with local boards and school patrons to promote education about the mascots and branding, which could take several years.

The vote came after a report from an advisory group that included representatives from the four federally recognized tribes in Kansas — the Kickapoo, Sac &amp; Fox, Iowa and Prairie Band Potawatomi.

The report said more than 10,000 American Indian/Alaska Native students attend public schools in Kansas. Studies have shown the racist connotations of Native American mascots harm the students' self esteem and limit how they see their futures, according to the report.

"These practices teach narrow-minded stereotypes that represent American Indians as exotic, warlike people who are stuck-in-the-past, making it difficult for people to understand how American Indians exist in contemporary ways,” the report said.

An exact number of Kansas schools that have Native American mascots was not provided. The Indian Leader, a newspaper at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, reported in 2020 that about 33 Kansas schools had mascots, such as Indians, Chieftans and Braves.

That number has declined as some districts, including&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/c9132f9360a0b2a27474ecc1bf9fbfac">Atchison</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-kansas-7f7b5551a97c69594f96a67f23cd5d4d">Shawnee Mission</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://newsroom.ap.org/3cab1dc7ae7d37f0bb50cd1b05840b0b">Wichita</a>&nbsp;have dropped American Indian mascots in recent years.

That advisory group's report also recommended that state and local districts' education policies be reviewed to determine how using American Indian-themed mascots and branding conflicts with student learning and well-being, including in schools that don't have such mascots.

The group also suggested a support network be created to help schools transition away from mascots and explore funding opportunities to help pay the cost of adopting new mascots and branding.

Alex Red Corn, an assistant professor of educational leadership at Kansas State University who was a member of the advisory board, acknowledged that efforts by other entities, such as the NCAA, to pass similar recommendations have met with mixed results.

But he said such motions can start discussions that are productive over time.

“This is the start of the dialogue where people start to actually learn about these things,” Red Corn said. "Once people start learning and peeling back the labels, that's when the actual change starts to occur.”

Kansas board recommends ending Native American mascots

Special guest speaker for the 2022 event is United States Air Force, Retired Colonel Leroy Stutz. Stutz is a Vietnam veteran and former POW.

Riley County Seniors' Service Center will host US Navy, (Ret.)&nbsp;Commander Carlton G. Philpot as guest speaker at 1:00 pm at the Riley County Seniors' Service Center located at 301 N. 4th Street in Manhattan.

Veterans Day events in Manhattan 2022

TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly announced Thursday the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission has selected Traci Brimhall as the 2023-2026 Poet Laureate of Kansas. Brimhall, a professor and director of creative writing at Kansas State University, will become the state’s eighth Poet Laureate when her four-year term begins on January 1.&nbsp;

“Supporting and celebrating poetry is essential to preserving our state’s rich history for future generations,” Kelly said.&nbsp;“That’s why I’m glad Traci will be our next Kansas Poet Laureate. Her passion and introspection make her the perfect advocate for poetry and the arts.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Poet Laureate of Kansas is an honorary position of the KCAIC that promotes the arts, especially the reading and writing of poetry, for all Kansans. The program was established in 2004.&nbsp;

As the new Poet Laureate of Kansas, Brimhall will conduct public readings, workshops, lectures, and presentations that serve communities across the state. Her plans for the laureateship will focus on connecting with Kansans through the shared experience of language, Kansas’ agricultural roots, and food.&nbsp;

“I am delighted to serve Kansas as the next Poet Laureate,” Brimhall said. “I love connecting with others and building community, and I can’t wait for the next few years of celebrating creativity in the Sunflower State.”&nbsp;

“The arts not only mold the quality of life in Kansas communities but color the palette of both local and state economies,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Traci Brimhall’s exceptional talent and her willingness to share it with the people of Kansas is a wonderful gift.”&nbsp;

Brimhall is the author of four poetry collections, most recently&nbsp;Come the Slumberless to the Land of Nod&nbsp;(Copper Canyon Press). Her poems have appeared in publications including&nbsp;The New Yorker, Poetry, Orion,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Best American Poetry.&nbsp;She received the 2013 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship in Poetry, among numerous other awards.&nbsp;

K-State professor named next Kansas Poet Laureate

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug distribution allegations.

Just after 8a.m. Monday, a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Chevy Malibu, west of Mayetta, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

 The driver, Cory Dionne, 55, of Junction City, was arrested on requested charges of distribution of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. 

Deputies arrested Heather Stephens, 48, of Emporia, on a Jackson County District Court warrant and for possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, according to Morse.

Sheriff: Junction City man accused of selling meth

UPDATE: According to Riley County Police Department, Public Information Officer, Aaron Wintermote, shortly before 6:00 pm, Wednesday, November 9th, Barbara Kilian, 34, of Wamego was driving a&nbsp;2008 Hyundai Sante Fe westbound on Highway 24, waiting in the median to cross the eastbound lanes and enter the Aldi's parking lot.

Kilian failed to yield, entering the eastbound lanes, causing the Sante Fe to collide with a 2015 Subaru Forester driven by Christina Lecuyer, 59, of Washington, KS head-on.

Kilian was cited for failure to yield. A street sign and light pole were also damaged in the crash.

Just before 6:00 pm on Wednesday, November 9th, emergency crews were called out to the scene of a two vehicle crash just east of the intersection of Tuttle creek Boulevard, Fort Riley Blvd. and East Poyntz Avenue (US Highway 24).

Riley County Police Department, Riley County EMS and Manhattan Fire Department all responded to the scene of the crash.

Upon arrival crews found two SUVs had crashed into each other and hit a power pole.

One SUV sustained major front end damage, while the other one had the wheels on the driver's side come off the vehicle.

Two people involved in the crash had minor injuries, but declined transport by Riley County EMS.

Eastbound traffic through the area was rerouted while crews worked the scene of the crash. The roadway was cleared just before 6:45 pm.

UPDATE: Minor injuries reported in crash on East Poyntz Ave near Aldi’s

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged theft in Manhattan.

Just before 2p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for theft by deception and forgery in the 1300 block of Pierre Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 39-year-old man and Community First Bank reported an unknown suspect stole the man's checkbook and cashed five checks over the course of two weeks.

RCPD: Safe with cash taken from Dairy Queen 

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after a traffic stop.

On November 3, 2022, a sheriff's deputy stopped a 1993 Ford F-150 pickup&nbsp; for an alleged traffic infraction just east of U.S. 75 Highway on 126th Road, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.&nbsp;

Deputies arrested the passenger, Shawn Michael Preece, 52, of Junction City, on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute, possession of a hallucinogenic drug with intent to distribute and no drug tax stamp, according to Morse.

Deputies arrested the driver, David Paul Jones, 37, of Enterprise, on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of the registered offender act, no vehicle registration, driving while suspended and no insurance.

UNOFFICIAL FINAL RESULTS: Riley County Nov. 8 Election

Shortly after 11 am on Tuesday, November 8, Manhattan Fire Department was called out to the intersection of Plymouth Landing and Concord Circle on the report of a gas leak.

Upon arrival Manhattan Fire Department found a 1 1/4" gas line had been hit by a construction crew working in the area.

Kansas Gas Service is on scene and digging to gain access to the line to control the leak.

Seven people were evacuated from four neighboring homes while crews get the leak contained.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported an Onyx Electric Motorbike driven by Erik S.&nbsp;Dedrickson,&nbsp; 31, Manhattan, was northbound on Tuttle Creek Boulevard in northeast Manhattan and struck the side of a&nbsp;2012 Subaru Outback driven by Graden Marden, 70, Manhattan, who&nbsp;made a left turn onto Griffith Drive.

Dedrickson was transported to Via Christi where he was pronounced dead. Marden was not injured and properly restrained, according to the KHP. Dedrickson was not wearing a helmet, only eye protection, according to the KHP.

Manhattan man dies after electric motorbike strikes SUV

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged battery and arson involving a dispute in Riley County.

Just after 8p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery in the 12000 block of Blue River Hills Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 43-year-old man reported a 54-year-old suspect used his 2020 Dodge Ram and struck the victim's 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser that was parked on the side of the road following an argument between the two.

A few hours later at 1a.m. Saturday, officers also filed a report for arson . in the 3800 block of W. 69th Ave. after responding to a report of the Dodge Ram that hit the victim's car was on fire. Riley County Fire District #1 responded as well to extinguish the fire.&nbsp;

According to the Riley County Police Department, around 9:00 p.m. Friday, November 4th, emergency crews were called out to the area of Stockdale Cove on the report of a crash.

When crews arrived on scene they found a two-vehicle crash involving a vehicle colliding with a car parked along the side of the road.

Minor injuries were reported with this crash, but they declined being transported by Riley County EMS.

Around 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 5th, the Riley County Fire District #1 responded to the report of a vehicle on fire in the 3500 block of West 69th Avenue.

Upon arrival RCFD #1 crews found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames, and determined the vehicle was involved in the Friday evening crash near Stockdale Cove.

 Fire crews from Station #104- Keats and Station #112 - Tuttle Creek responded with 10 personnel, and quickly extinguished the fire before it could spread to nearby pastures.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Update: Arson investigation; suspect used pickup to damage SUV

A 2014 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Ethan Bryant, 16, Manhattan, traveled through the t-intersection on Calvary as it met Welsh Road near Riley and into the ditch, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

EMS transported Bryant to Via Christi for treatment of neck and back pain, and was later released.

Green lights have been installed along Poyntz Avenue in Downtown Manhattan to show support for military veterans and their families.&nbsp;

The 'Operation Green Light' display will run from November 6th through November 13th and is a part of a nationwide collaboration to support military veterans.&nbsp;

The intent of the display is to raise awareness of the unique challenges faced by veterans and promoting the importance of continued assistance for veterans at not only the community level, but also state and federal levels as well.

Riley County Commissioner John Ford learned about Operation&nbsp; Green&nbsp;Light&nbsp;earlier this year through the National Association of Counties (NACo). He approached local agencies in August with the idea of starting a display aligned with the national campaign. “People stepped up quicky to organize the effort and lend their support,” said Commissioner John Ford. “We’re sending the message to our veterans that we’re here for them, and the entire community is here to stand with them. By shining a&nbsp;green&nbsp;light, we let our veterans know they are seen, appreciated, and supported.”&nbsp; &nbsp;

American Legion Pearce-Keller Post No. 17, City of Manhattan, Downtown Manhattan, Inc., Flint Hills Veterans Coalition, Greater Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce Military Relations Committee, Riley County, and VFW Post 1786 of Manhattan Kansas assisted with making this display possible.

“It was truly a team effort,” said Military Community Liaison Janet Nichols. “Everyone who heard about the project immediately jumped on board to make this happen in time for Veterans Day.” The&nbsp;lights were funded by donations, and volunteers will work to install them in time for Veterans Day celebrations.&nbsp; “We’re thrilled that Downtown Manhattan will be the centerpiece for supporting veterans,” said Gina Snyder, Executive Director of Downtown Manhattan, Inc. “Thanks to all who made this happen!”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The parade will be held on Friday, December 2nd, 2022 at 5:30 pm.

This year the parade route will be a bit different from previous years due to the ongoing road construction in Aggieville.

The parade will start at the intersection of Third Street and Poyntz Avenue and will travel west down Poyntz Avenue to 11th Street. 

NEW THIS YEAR, the parade route will turn onto Fremont Street from 11th Street and end in City Park.
