RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 4p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Anderson and Dennison Avenue in Manhattan.

A 2008 Ford F-150 driven by Ashley Teneyck, 29, of Manhattan had been waiting at a traffic light to head south on Denison Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

As the light turned green, the pickup struck a 2018 Kia Sportage driven by Angela Gura, 40, of Manhattan, who had been waiting on the cars in front of her to start driving 

EMS transported Gura to Via Christi for treatment of head, neck, and back pain. Teneyck was issued a citation for inattentive driving.

Manhattan woman hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities and USD 383 officials are investigating an alleged criminal threat and have made an arrest.

Just after 10a.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for criminal threat at Eisenhower Middle School, 800 Walters Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. 

Officials reported a 14-year-old identified as Litzy Rivera of Manhattan had made violent threats against others at the school. Investigation showed the suspect was not in possession of a weapon at the school and didn't have access to weapons. 

Police arrested Rivera on requested charges of&nbsp; criminal threat. She was processed through juvenile intake and released to a guardian.

Hy-Vee announced Tuesday that its more than 285 retail locations will be closed for Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, so that the company’s more than 80,000 employees across its eight-state region can enjoy the holiday with their friends and family, according to a media release from the retailer.

This is the first time in Hy-Vee’s 92-year history that its stores will close on Thanksgiving, reflecting Hy-Vee’s commitment to be the best place to work in America. All Hy-Vee grocery stores, Dollar Fresh Markets, Hy-Vee Fast &amp; Fresh locations, Wall to Wall Wine and Spirits locations, and Hy-Vee Wine &amp; Spirits locations will be closed. Customers will still be able to pay at the pump for fuel at all Hy-Vee Fast &amp; Fresh locations on Thanksgiving Day.

“Thanksgiving Day is about gratitude. The last several years have been some of the most challenging our employees have experienced and this is our way of showing our appreciation for everything they do on a daily basis to serve our customers,” said Jeremy Gosch, CEO and president of Hy-Vee. “By closing our stores on Thanksgiving Day, we can give back to our employees by providing them time to focus on their own celebrations.”

RILEY COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating more counterfeit cash in Kansas.&nbsp;

According to the Riley County Police Department, a fake $100 bill was used in an attempt to make a purchase at a business in Manhattan on Monday.&nbsp;

Police identified 52-year-old David Voter of Manhattan as the individual who used this bill. Police issued him a Notice to Appear for attempted theft.

Even though police identified the responsible party, police advised the public to be aware this fake money may appear at other businesses in the area.

Earlier in October, police in Cowley County arrested a suspect for allegedly spending counterfeit $100 bills.&nbsp; The Norton County sheriff&nbsp; reported counterfeit bills were circulating in portions of northwest Kansas.

In September the sheriff's office in Haskell County reported counterfeit cash. During the month of June, authorities in Finney County took 16 reports of counterfeit money.

Just before 8:00 pm on Tuesday evening, Manhattan Fire Department crews were called out to the report of a structure fire near the intersection of Colbert Hills and Eldridge Drives.

Upon arrival crews found smoke coming from the garage of the single story residence, and quickly gained access to the garage, extinguishing the fire in under an hour.

The residents were home at the time of the fire and were able to escape unharmed before emergency crews arrived.

Seventeen&nbsp;firefighters responded on 5 fire apparatus with units remaining on scene to watch for and extinguish hotspots and assist with the investigation.

Loss is estimated at $5,000 to contents and $3,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Trumain and Juakeenia Carroll and of Manhattan, Ks.&nbsp;

On Monday the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency, commonly referred to as the Law Board selected and announced Brian R. Peete as the next director for the Riley County Police Department.

The Riley County Police Department was established in 1974, Peete will be the 6th Director for the department.

Currently Peete serves as the Chief of Police in Montpelier, VT. The police department there has 27 full-time members, including officers, administration, parking enforcement and regional emergency communication dispatch personnel.

Peete has also served as Chief of Police in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He worked for the City of Chicago's Inspector General's Office as the Chief Forensic Audit Investigator for Public Safety(Police Accountability) and as a Chief Investigator. Peete also worked as a Patrolman, Field Training Officer and Fusion Center Analyst for the Chicago Police Department.

He previously served in the Air Force Office of Special Investigations as the Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge (Operations Officer),&nbsp;Detachment 206 Las Vegas, Nev. 

He was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and coordinated U.S. and Afghan forces in over 150 counter espionage, counterterrorism/counterintelligence, and force protection missions.&nbsp;

He also was the Regional Manager for Operations Enhancement, 2nd Field Investigations Region at Langley Air Force Base responsible for the investigations and operations for over 400 Special Agents in 31 AFOSI offices worldwide to include Iraq and Afghanistan.

Before beginning his career in law enforcement, Peete was an Air Force aircraft maintenance officer who commanded three separate Maintenance Flights.

Peete has an M.A. in Police Psychology, a B.S. in Sociology with an emphasis on Employment Relations and has collectively managed over 1,000 people, 14 facilities, and over $1 billion of assets and operating budgets throughout his career.

His wife Natalie and daughter Gabriella will join him in his move to serve Riley County.

Additional information about the transition from Interim Director Kurt Moldrup to Director Brian Peete as head of the Riley County Police Department will be released by the Law Board at the November 21st Law Board Meeting in Ogden.

RILEY COUNTY - The Riley County Clerk's Office was notified on October 31st of a clerical error in the local redistricting map which caused four streets to be in the area of Sunset Cemetery to be in the incorrect district.

Stratton Circle, Edgerton Avenue, Meadowmere Court and Westview Drive were incorrectly listed in the 67th State District instead of the 66th State District.

This error caused the incorrect state representative candidates to be listed on the ballots for the 101 registered voters in that area.

Ten voters have already cast their ballots during advance voting and will not be eligible to vote for the corrected district. The remaining 91 voters will receive ballots with the correct district, 66th District in the State Representative Race.

Staff with Riley County have reviewed the redistricting maps to verify accuracy for the remaining ballots.

The 67th District includes a total of 16,081 registered voters who are choosing between Mike Dodson (Rep) and Kim Zito (Dem) for State of Kansas Representative. The 66th District Representative is Sydney Carlin (Dem) who is running uncontested in the 2022 election. Candidates have been notified of the error.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged home-invasion break-in in Manhattan.

Just after 9:30p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for aggravated assault, battery, criminal damage to property, and criminal trespass in the 2000 block of College Heights Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Just after 9:30 p.m., a 17-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman reported a 26-year-old man and a 30-year-old man broke into a house and threatened the victims with guns following a fight between the parties earlier in the evening.

Police identified Vanda Vereen, 26, and Christopher Sims, 30, both of Fort Riley as the suspects and arrested them on requested charges of aggravated assault. Both remain confined in the Riley County Jail on total bonds of $10,000 each.

Just after 2:30p.m. Sunday, officers filed a report for identity theft and theft in the 600 block of 3rd Place in Manhattan, according to the Riley&nbsp; County Police Department activity report.

"So she would always take me with her when she would go to her singing engagements and I would see how everyone was just so mesmerized by her singing and how everyone was just responding to what she was doing. I remember sitting in the front pew one day saying I want to do that one day." Aaron also credits former teacher Mary Louise Stahl with helping cultivate his love of music.

Aaron knows performing on 'The Voice' could put him on a new platform in getting his name out there.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Aaron is currently a paraprofessional at Junction City High School. He is a 2006 graduate of JCHS.

On a media release dated Friday, October 28, the Riley County Police Department states a Corrections Sergeant for the department had been issued a notice to appear in Manhattan Municipal Court.

Sergeant Justin Borge, 38, was issued a notice to appear for an incident which occurred on September 26, 2022 in the 300 block of Anderson Avenue in Manhattan while Borge was off-duty.

Borge is reportedly charged with disorderly conduct following a reported argument with another man at a business.

Kansas State University Police Department investigated the reported incident, an gave their findings to the&nbsp; City of Manhattan Chief Prosecutor Mellissa Rundus who issued the notice to appear to Borge on Thursday.

RCPD Interim Director, Kurt Moldrup says, "We expect our employees to treat everyone with decency and respect, both on and off-duty.&nbsp;I trust Chief Prosecutor Rundus to gather all the facts about the incident and her process to make a just decision.”

Any internal discipline will be based on the findings of an investigation from the RCPD Internal Affairs Office.

On Friday, October 28, 2022, Governor Laura Kelly announced a partnership between Kansas Tourism and the Patterson Family Foundation, providing nearly $2 million to eight tourism projects across the state of Kansas.

Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland and Kansas Tourism Director Bridgette Jobe presented the Tourism Attraction Sub-Grants for Kansas (TASK) at the Strataca: Kansas Underground Salt Museum in Hutchinson on Thursday.

In the state of Kansas, tourism is the 9th largest employer, generating more than $11.8 billion in economic output annually, saving Kansans approximately $600 on average in yearly taxes.

“Kansas is increasingly becoming a destination state for tourists around the world – and these grants make that all the more true,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “By developing new and enhanced tourism attractions, we’re growing an industry that employs tens of thousands of Kansans, brings billions of dollars into our economy, and preserves our rich history for generations to come.”

Each of the candidates introduced themselves, and then followed with each candidate presenting a 15-minute answer to same question given to each.

The first to make their presentation was finalist,&nbsp;Mark Mathies from Edwardsville, KS Police Department.

Mathies' main point was 'The Importance of You' and the origin of community policing, and followed with connecting to present day policing by building trust and legitimacy between the department and the community.

Mathies also spoke of 'The Unforgettable YOU,' focusing on the core values of the organization including equity, inclusion and diversity.

Second to present was Josh Kyle from the Riley County Police Department.&nbsp;

Kyle says hiring high quality personnel and pay them well, and focus on continued positive face-to-face interactions.

Kyle says rebuilding community partnerships is important to the continued success of the department and build the trust of the younger generations who have grown up without that early positive connection to police officers at a young age.

The final presentation to the forum was by finalist, Brian Peete from&nbsp;Montpelier VT Police Department.

Peete says the department cannot take care of others if the department isn't taking care of itself, and can be successful with servant based leadership, and by modeling personal and professional conduct.

Peete pledges to the continue the great work of the predecessors at the Riley County Police Department in the reduction of crime and taking the department to the next level.

Following the presentations, the candidates were asked questions from community members which were presented by moderators, to assist with keeping the forum running within the time constraints.

The Riley County Law Enforcement Agency (Law Board) intends to select and announce the next director of the Riley County Police Department by December 1, 2022.

GEARY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating vandalism involving police vehicles in Geary County.

During the early morning hours Thursday Geary County Sheriff's Office vehicles were the target of vandalism when tires were slashed on 11 patrol units while parked in the lot at 9th and Franklin streets, according to a media release.

&nbsp;After viewing security video, sheriff's deputies arrested Justin Neinhaus, 36, of Grandview Plaza, on requested charges including 10 counts of felony criminal damage to property, two misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property and two counts of felony interference with a law enforcement officer. Damage to the Sheriff's vehicles is estimated to be approximately $12,000.

Junction City and Grandview Plaza police departments' vehicles were also damaged. In Grandview Plaza all four tires on each of three patrol cars were slashed. Each department has its own case against the suspect.

Kansas man accused of slashing tires on law enforcement vehicles

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/ManhattanFestivalofLights">Whoville's "Festival of lights"</a> Christmas tree is ready to return to Blue Earth Plaza for the 10th year.

In December 2021, the Whoville Christmas tree was toppled by the 'Grinch' disguised as a Kansas windstorm.

Whoville is a non-profit organization in Manhattan, Kansas, which has organized the annual "Festival of lights" display at Blue Earth Plaza .

"Festival of lights" is coming back to Blue Earth Plaza for the 10th year with a brand new tree and lighted tunnel to replace the damaged ones.

The Whoville "Festival of lights" tree and tunnel displays will start being installed on Monday, November 7th, a new support and anchoring system is being installed starting October 27th.

The new anchoring system is to ensure safety of community members visiting the display, as well as, minimize damage from wind and storms

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly today announced that Radiation Detection Technologies Inc., a semiconductor device manufacturer, is expanding its operations around Manhattan. The company will create 30 new jobs over the next five years with a $4 million investment to construct a new facility and purchase new semiconductor processing equipment.

“Radiation Detection Technologies’ investment shows that Kansas businesses are not just keeping up with technological trends – they’re setting them,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“It’s clear that my administration’s laser-sharp focus on economic development is paying dividends and is ensuring our state’s economy remains modern and innovative in a rapidly changing world.”

RDT was founded in 2011 by the Kansas State University Semiconductor Materials and Radiological Technologies (SMART) Lab in Manhattan. RDT focuses on manufacturing state-of-the-art, high-quality semiconductor devices, semiconductor materials, radiation detectors, and electronic circuit technologies for use in multiple industries, including healthcare, defense, energy, and agriculture.

RILEY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 4:30a.m. Thursday in Riley County.

A 2018 Hino box truck driven by Damion White, 36, of Lee Summit, Missouri, was westbound on Interstate 70 at Deep Creek Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp;

 The truck overturned. White was transported to Via Christi for possible bruising to the ribs, spine, and kidney.

A 2006 Toyota Tundra driven by Benjamin Lemmons, 40, Manhattan was eastbound on Bluemont Avenue and turned onto Tuttle Creek Blvd. and rear-ended a 2018 Ford Fusion driven by Daniel Tyson, 47, Manhattan,&nbsp;that was stopped with traffic, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

EMS transported two passengers in the Ford identified as Traci Tyson, 42, and Taylor Hatch, 17, both of Manhattan to Via Christi for treatment of head pain. Lemmons was issued a citation for following too close.

UPDATE: RCPD says Arion was located safe.- - - - - - - - - - - -&nbsp;RILEY COUNTY - The Riley County Police Department is searching for 16-year-old, Arion Williams.

Williams was last seen around 2:00 pm on Friday, October 21 in the Northview area of Manhattan.

Arion was wearing a black hoodie, black jeans and black or white Nike shoes when he was last seen.

Arion is approximately 6 feet tall and weighs 170 pounds.
