Junction City police are reporting the arrest of a 22-year old Junction City woman, Alyzah Benitez, in connection with the Aug. 22 death of Caytlin P. Hinkle, 19, Junction City. They said Benitez was arrested on the&nbsp; charge of Distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm or death. She was transported to the Geary County Detention Center where she is being held without bond pending a first appearance in Geary County District Court.

On Aug. 22 JCPD officers responded to&nbsp; a call of an unresponsive subject in the 1500 block of Patriot Drive in Junction City. Upon arrival officers discovered Hinkle unresponsive. EMS attempted to resuscitate her but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Following an autopsy, it was determined that Hinkle's cause of death was "Acute Fentanyl intoxication. "

Following a five-month long investigation, at approximately 3 p.m. Thursday detectives with the JCPD's Drug Task Force arrested Benitez.

MANHATTAN - Officers with the Riley County Police Department responded to the 1400 block of Houston Street around 3:30 on Tuesday, January 24th.

A 34-year-old woman reported she was threatened with a bat during an argument with 31-year-old, Dakotah Garner of Manhattan.

Garner was arrested for aggravated assault and criminal threat in connection to the incident.

He was issued a total bond of $5,000 and is no longer confined.

RUSSELL — The Russell USD 407 Board of Education has announced the selection of Jordan Perez as the new superintendent. Perez will take the reins on July 1, following Clark Coco, interim superintendent, whose contract ends on June 30.

Jordan Perez has broad educational experience, as an administrator, teacher, and mentor to educators. Perez was hired by USD 407 in 2019 and served two years as principal of Simpson Elementary School before transferring to his current position as principal of Ruppenthal Middle School. Prior to arriving in Russell, Perez taught fourth and second grades at Lee Elementary in USD 383 Manhattan.

Perez earned his bachelor of science in elementary education from Kansas State University in 2011, his master of arts in education from Ottawa University in 2018, and he will graduate in May 2023 with his education specialist degree from Fort Hays State University.

Board President Kathy Wallert said Perez emerged from a very thorough search process as the right candidate to lead the school District.

“The Board is certain in our choice of Jordan Perez and confident that under his leadership USD 407 will continue to move and grow in a positive direction," she said.

Wallert said community input, including the involvement of stakeholders, was a key factor in the success of the superintendent search process. The committees included teachers and administrators, parents, and community members.

“The input from the community as a whole was very helpful to our process," she said.

Perez was chosen from among three finalists.&nbsp;

BUCHANAN COUNTY, Mo.—One person was injured in an accident just after 6:30p.m. Monday in Buchanan County.&nbsp;

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Freightliner tractor driven by James M. Peterson, 52, Manhattan, was northbound on Interstate 29 just south of the downtown St. Joseph exit.

The vehicle changed lanes into the driving lane and rear-ended a 2012 Nissan Maxima driven by Cheryl L. Carpenter, 56, St. Joseph. After impact the Nissan slid off the road into the median and struck the cable barrier.

Buchanan County EMS transported Carpenter to Mosaic Life Care. Peterson was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an armed robbery in Manhattan.

Just after 10p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for aggravated robbery at a restaurant in the 1000 block of N. 3rd Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

An individual armed with a handgun entered the restaurant while four employees were present and stole approximately $570 cash from the registers before fleeing the area. No injuries were reported.&nbsp;

Riley County Arrest Report January 21

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.9% in December. This is an increase from 2.8% in November and an increase from 2.8% in December 2021.

Riley County's jobless rate remains low along with most counties in the region. However the unemployment rate jumped from 2.3 percent in November to 2.7 in December. The rate in Geary County held steady over the past two months at 3.8 percent.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 500 from November. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 1,100 over the month, while government decreased by 600.

“Kansas experienced strong job growth over the year, with the private sector adding 37,900 jobs,” said Labor Economist Nathan Kessler. “Industries that saw robust growth include manufacturing and education and health services, collectively adding 15,900 jobs over the year.”

Since December 2021 Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 42,300. This change is due to an increase of 37,900 private sector jobs and an increase of 4,400 government jobs.

MANHATTAN - Be Able Community welcomed volunteers on Tuesday morning as part of their 'Love Thy Neighborhood' initiative to walk down Yuma street cleaning up trash left on the street and curbs.

Be Able assists community members in finding ways to overcome obstacles in their lives by loving neighbors and helping them to find resources to find success.

More than 30 volunteers helped pick up more than a grocery cart full of trash and debris from Yuma Street and 5th Street down to the Douglass Center.

"The whole idea is to literally give back to the community in every facet possible. We accept anybody at any time and we're open to the public. We just want to love thy neighbor. And that was the title of the event was A Love Thy Neighborhood." Be Able Program Director, Marlon Jackson says.

MANHATTAN - According to the Riley County Police Department, a Manhattan man has been arrested in connection with shots fired overnight in Manhattan.

RCPD officers responded to the 2500 block of Brook Lane in Manhattan around 3:15 am on Friday, January 20th.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with a 26-year-old woman and 27-year old man, who reported a known 48-year-old man attempted to enter the front door of their home.

The man then allegedly shot multiple rounds from a pistol into unoccupied parked cars in the area. No injuries were reported.

Forty-eight year old, Bradley Smith of Manhattan was arrested in connection with the incident. Charges and bond were still pending as of 9:30 am.

Manhattan man arrested in connection with shots fired in MHK

FORT RILEY - On January 10th, 2023,&nbsp; the US Army named Fort Riley, one of seven installations, as a 2022 Army Community Partnership Award winner.

USD 475 Geary County and Fort Riley were recognized for the partnership between the installation and school district for a first Design-build Capital Improvement, Repair and Maintenance Intergovernmental Support Agreement(IGSA).

"While Fort Riley and USD 475 have always considered each other to be partners, this marks the second time the two organizations are partnering through an intergovernmental support agreement. This is a testament that we truly are an integrated team.”&nbsp;U.S. Army Garrison Fort Riley commander, Col. Michael Foote said.

The IGSA expands mission capability and improves training capabilities through a cost-effective modernization of facilities required to train and prepare units to conduct mutli-domain operations. by BECKY GOFF Little Apple PostFORT RILEY - On January 10th, 2023,&nbsp; the US Army named Fort Riley, one of seven installations, as a 2022 Army Community Partnership Award winner.USD 475 Geary County and Fort Riley were recognized for the partnership between the installation and school district for a first Design-build Capital Improvement, Repair and Maintenance Intergovernmental Support Agreement(IGSA)."While Fort Riley and USD 475 have always considered each other to be partners, this marks the second time the two organizations are partnering through an intergovernmental support agreement.
