HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jon Austin, DVM, with Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital, explained that the veterinary tranquilizer Xylazine that is now being found mixed with fentanyl in some human overdose cases has long been in use in practice on animals.

"It's a medication that's been around a long time," Austin said. "It's very, very helpful and has a good purpose in veterinary medicine. It's used both in large animal and in small animal, for longer term injectable&nbsp;anesthesia. It's put in combination with other medications to make it an anesthetic. It acts more as a tranquilizer or sedative by itself. It's a very potent drug. Its effect is long lasting."

It's especially important for large animals like cows and horses when you can't take an operating room out to the pasture.

"A small amount of it in a needle will put a 1500 pound animal on their heels for long enough to do surgery procedures," Austin said. "I use it frequently in combination with another one called ketamine to do painful surgeries on cats. They will sleep an hour through an active surgery procedure and then they will be groggy and with good pain relief, good analgesia and sedation for five or six more hours."

Austin's concern is the off label usage of the drug by humans may eventually make it unavailable to vets.

"When people start doing things they shouldn't with things, oftentimes the solution for the government is just to take it away," Austin said. "Then, we're left without something to give that kind of help to us for procedures and things we need to do on our pets. I cannot imagine what recreational purpose someone might have for that medication, unless being unconscious and knocked out for hours is what they are looking for. I don't know. I don't understand that, myself."

Riley County Arrest Report May 13

RILEY COUNTY - A Manhattan man was killed on Friday afternoon following a motorcycle versus truck crash on Tuttle Creek Blvd at West 92nd Avenue.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol online crash logs, at just before 4:00 pm on Friday, a 2016 Ford F-150, driven by 66-year-old Donald E. Oriley of Hopkins Missouri, was preparing to turn left onto West 92nd Avenue. Oriley was not injured in the crash.

While waiting to make the turn a 2012 Harley Davidson FLHX motorcycle, driven by 66-year-old, Daniel G. Davis of Manhattan, collided with back left corner of the F-150.

Davis was ejected from the motorcycle, according to KHP, he was wearing safety glasses but no helmet. Davis died at the scene.

A third vehicle, a 2018 Dodge Journey, driven by 15-year-old Hope Wilson of Wakefield, was struck by debris as a result of the original crash. Wilson was not injured in the crash.

Wilson's passenger, 52-year-old Shannon D. Wilson, also of Wakefield was not injured in the crash.&nbsp;

Tuttle Creek Boulevard was closed for a few hours while emergency crews worked the scene of the crash, the roadway was reopened around 7:30 pm.

GEARY COUNTY— One person was injured in an accident on Thursday in Geary County.

The Geary County Sheriff's office reported a Nissan Cargo van driven by Steven McQueen, Jr. of Plattsburg, Missouri was eastbound on Interstate 70 near Deep Creek Road.

The van rear-ended a Kia SUV driven by Thomas Jacobs of Fort Stockton, Texas.&nbsp; After impact, the Kia spun out and continued down an embankment.

EMS transported Jacobs to an area hospital. The sheriff's office reported no additional details.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — May is the month in Kansas when the state typically sees its most severe weather, including tornadoes. Kansas Gas Service wants to remind all customers to keep safety in mind before and after a storm.

“Taking steps to protect your natural gas meter is often an afterthought, but it’s important to keep in mind for the safety of yourself and your community, especially during severe weather season,” said Sean Postlethwait, vice president of operations for Kansas Gas Service. “Preparedness is key, and we encourage our customers to join us in taking a few simple steps to plan for any storm.”

Here are some helpful steps to take in preparation for severe weather:

• Check around your natural gas meter and remove any objects that could be blown into the meter by strong winds or pushed into the meter by heavy rain and flooding.

• Remove any branches or other objects above the meter that could fall onto and damage the meter. Safety should always be a priority, even after severe weather. Here are some important things to remember once the storm passes.

• If you smell natural gas, usually described as a “rotten egg” odor, leave the area immediately, then call 911 and Kansas Gas Service at 888-482-4950. Be sure not to operate any electrical appliances, including light switches.

• If you don’t smell natural gas, still do a maintenance check around your home by checking all gas appliances for damage and chimneys and flues for any fallen objects.

• If you need to remove any fallen tree limbs or uncovered debris, contact 811 to locate underground natural gas pipelines and other utility lines if this requires digging.

• If your natural gas meter was turned off or your service was interrupted during the storm, call the Kansas Gas Service customer service line at 800-794-4780 to restore your service. DO NOT attempt to turn your natural gas meter back on.

The Board participated in a tour of the Biosecurity Research Institute at Kansas State University during their two-day retreat. State Fair Board holds retreat in Manhattan

Mark Estares has been named the College of Business Administration Outstanding Senior at Kansas State University. Estares, from&nbsp;Junction City, is majoring in accounting and finance while concurrently earning his Master of Accountancy. He was selected for the honor by the Dean's Student Advisory Council in the&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Business Administration</a>. As an undergraduate, Estares commuted from Junction City and helped students without transportation by coming to campus early and staying late to ensure others were able to attend classes. His kindness and generosity extended to his on-campus activities as a tutor for the Department of Accounting. He served in several elected roles in the Multicultural Business Student Association and has been instrumental in building relationships with other multicultural organizations across campus, including creating events that enable cross-organizational collaboration. Estares also served as an informal mentor in the&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/academics/scholar-programs/rise-up/" target="_blank">Rise Up program</a>. RILEY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 10:30a.m. Tuesday in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a Honda Civic driven by Ciara Hovis, 22, of Manhattan struck a pedestrian identified as 20-year-old Kamri Younger of Manhattan&nbsp;the intersection of Anderson Avenue and Denison Avenue in Manhattan

EMS transported Younger to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. Hovis was issued a citation for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, according to the RCPD.

MANHATTAN — Excellence in research has earned several students at Kansas State University recognition through the 10th annual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lib.k-state.edu/kirmser-undergraduate-research-award" target="_blank">Kirmser Undergraduate Research Awards</a>&nbsp;from K-State Libraries. The awards&nbsp;recognize the use of library resources to complete research for projects.&nbsp;The awards committee, made up of faculty from varying disciplines, recognized outstanding undergraduate research in topics ranging from prairie chickens to conspiracy theories. Grand prize awards were given in three categories: individual freshman, individual non-freshman and group. The individual grand prizewinners received $1,500 each,&nbsp;and the group grand prizewinners shared a $6,000 award. Honorable mentions were granted $100 each. The awards are made possible through a gift from the Philip and Jeune Kirmser estate. Both grand and honorable mention prizewinners are invited to archive their projects in the university's institutional repository, the K-State Research Exchange, or K-REx, so that they are available online to the public. The grand prize in the group research category was for the project "Declining Population Trends of the Lesser Prairie-Chicken in the Southern Great Plains," for the biogeography class taught by Laura Moley, research assistant professor. MANHATTAN –&nbsp;Kansas State Athletics Director Gene Taylor announced today that construction has commenced on a new indoor track and field complex as the department will transition the original football indoor building into a new facility for track and field. “When we announced our facilities master plan back in 2018, we anticipated transitioning the football indoor into a new track and field venue, and we feel like when it is completed, it will be a tremendous home for both training and competition,” Taylor said. “I know our coaching staff and student-athletes will benefit greatly from this enhancement, and we look forward to hosting more meets in the future.” Progress began several weeks ago on phase one of the project with the removal of the football turf playing field and will continue through the summer with upgraded lighting, paint and HVAC. Wildcat athletes are expected to begin training in the new facility in December. The department will fund the project, which will cost approximately $12 million, through private gifts and department dollars.

“This new facility will provide a huge lift to our program from not only a training and competition perspective, but also in recruiting,” Director of Track and Field Cliff Rovelto said. “We are very appreciative of Gene (Taylor) and our administration for making this project a priority and know that it will be a facility we will all take great pride in.”

In addition, the department has partnered with Mondo to provide the new indoor track surface in the facility. The new 200-meter, 6-lane oval, permanent banked track will feature Mondo’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mondoworldwide.com/na/EN/sport/Track-and-Field/Sportflex-Super-X-720/" target="_blank">Super X 720</a>&nbsp;surface, which provides the optimal blend of energy return, comfort, safety and durability for everything from daily training to the toughest competitions.

An 8-lane sprint straightaway, a pole vault lane, two long jump/triple jump lanes, throw areas, a four-lane warm-up straightaway and non-competition areas around the track also will be Mondo’s Super X 720 surface. The competition surfaces, as well as the warm-up lanes, will be in a shade of purple Mondo custom created for the program.

Rovelto says they are looking forward to getting the new Mondo banked track, and that their athletes will appreciate that they can train safely and at a high level on a quality surface.

“With Mondo, you can have a track that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but wears well, lets you perform at a high level for competitions and is great for training,” said Rovelto. “Being able to train safely and comfortably as much as our athletes train is very important to us, as well as to our athletes, and having a quality banked track in a quality facility will be appealing to prospective student-athletes. Plus, because of how they are made, Mondo tracks have a consistent surface throughout.”

Phase two of the project will include a new exterior facade on the north end of the building as well as new locker rooms, team rooms and training rooms. A timetable for completion of phase two has yet to be finalized.

LEONARDVILLE - Riley County Commissioners alongside Riley County EMS Director, David Adams; 64th District State Representative Lewis Bloom, along with representatives from Schultz Construction and Anderson Knight Architects broke ground at the edge of the site for the new Riley County EMS station located in Leonardville.

Construction crews have already started working on the base layer of the lot to support the building, parking lot and driveway.

Construction of the new ambulance station for Riley County EMS is expected to be completed by September 2023.

DICKINSON COUNTY –&nbsp; On Monday, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Herington man on a warrant, according to a media release from the agency.

Russell L. Thomas, 61, of Herington, was arrested on requested charges that include three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, and misdemeanor battery. 

The arrest occurred at 9:50 a.m. at 434 Union Road in Herington, Kansas, according to the KBI.&nbsp;Thomas is a middle school science teacher at Herington USD 487, <a href="https://www.heringtonschools.org/staff?search=Thomas">according to the district web site.</a>

Agents arrested Thomas in April for aggravated intimidation of a witness connected to the investigation. He was released after bond was posted.

Following Monday’s arrest, Thomas was booked into the Dickinson County Jail.&nbsp;

Thomas was booked into the Dickinson County Jail. Bond was set at $50,000. He is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

Herington teacher now accused of child sex crime

ST. GEORGE - According to a release by the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office, on Thursday, May 4th, a narcotics search warrant was executed in the 11000 block of Glenwood Lane.&nbsp;

The search warrant stemmed from an investigation into illegal drug activity in the Pottawatomie County area.

Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were among the items seized from the residence.

Pottawatomie County Sheriff's deputies arrested three individuals in relation to this search warrant.

Fifty-year-old Dustin Molden, of St. George was arrested for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is confined at the Pottawatomie County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

Thirty-three-year-old Jamie Berges of St. George was arrested for possession of&nbsp;methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia, along with an outside warrant for probation violation out of Riley County, Kansas. She is currently confined at the Pottawatomie County Jail on a $10,000 bond on the drug charges and a $5,000 bond on the Riley County warrant.

Twenty-two-year-old Randall Chilson of St. George was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and an outstanding warrant for sexual exploitation of a child out of Marshall County, Kansas. He is confined at the Pottawatomie County Jail on a $10,000 bond for the drug charges and a $100,000 bond on his Marshall County warrant.
