RCPD sees increase in female jail inmates

The Director of the Riley County Police Department Brian Peete  informed the county commission on Aug. 15 that the jail inmate population was close to maximum limits, particularly the female population which had gone up.

Peete noted that the cases did not necessarily involve those where a person bonds out, but long term housing situations. They are now having to contract with other jails in the area asking them to house some of those female inmates. The cost is running about $3,500 per month.

On a separate note, Peete also added 14 inmates have been incarcerated in the facility one year or longer. Authorities want to work to see if they can move those cases as fast as possible.
