MANHATTAN - Just after 10am on Thursday morning, Manhattan Fire Department was called out to 1006 Pottawatomie Court on the report of a structure fire.

Upon arrival fire crews found a duplex with smoke coming from the building.

After searching the house, the fire was contained within 10 minutes.

The occupant was not home at the time of the fire.&nbsp;

One cat was rescued from the fire and received treatment for smoke inhalation by Manhattan Fire Department firefighters and Riley County EMS personnel.

Eighteen firefighters and 6 fire apparatus responded to the scene, along with Riley County EMS and Riley County Police Department.

The residence is a single story duplex, with damage from the fire and smoke estimated at $20,000 to the contents of the home and $15,000 to the sturcture.

The owner of the property is listed as Housing Authority City of Manhattan.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Students at&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;were not only dedicated to their studies this past year but also spent countless hours giving back to the Salina community with a long list of volunteer efforts. At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, K-State Salina leadership challenged campus members to become more involved and push themselves to find community-service projects to give back. Many students at K-State Salina took that challenge to heart, and they led or participated in more than 20 community service projects over the academic year. While some projects were small, others took significant time to organize and find student volunteers to complete. Much of that organization came from K-State Salina's Student Governing Association,&nbsp;or SGA, and Charlie Kiehlbauch,&nbsp;sophomore in professional pilot,&nbsp;Fort Worth, Texas, who serves&nbsp;in&nbsp;the community service cabinet position on SGA. While Kiehlbauch&nbsp;participated&nbsp;in many of the outreach efforts, he spent even more time putting together opportunities for students to&nbsp;volunteer&nbsp;by becoming a liaison to the community. "I talked with SGA leadership, and we decided to create a position within the organization to spearhead our campus-led volunteer efforts,"&nbsp;said Kiehlbauch.&nbsp;"If someone in the community needed volunteers, they could reach out to me, and I helped organize the student body to give back and participate. I also wanted to focus on planning big events to make them even more impactful." Many of the efforts that Kiehlbauch&nbsp;organized&nbsp;revolved around the K-State Salina campus and helping fellow students. There were other efforts, however, that allowed the students to get involved in the community. These efforts&nbsp;included assisting students at Sunset Elementary School in Salina&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/2022-12/salina-giving-tree-project122122.html" target="_blank">Giving Tree</a>&nbsp;volunteer project, where students, faculty and staff at K-State Salina donated gifts to elementary students and their families. Another volunteer effort was STEM Night at&nbsp;Sunset Elementary School.&nbsp;Several&nbsp;of&nbsp;K-State Salina's student clubs&nbsp;visited the school to share more about K-State Salina with the students. Organizations that participated&nbsp;include the&nbsp;Flight Team, Women's Air Race Classic,&nbsp;Women in Aviation, the&nbsp;Uncrewed Aircraft Systems Club&nbsp;and&nbsp;the campus's Upward Bound&nbsp;program. Kiehlbauch said&nbsp;that the&nbsp;February&nbsp;event was a success. "Students came out and cooked some hot dogs and served popcorn with lemonade. We also had hands-on booths where students and their families could see and use some of our flight simulators, UAS equipment and more,"&nbsp;said&nbsp;Kiehlbauch.&nbsp;"The Sunset students got to go to the booths and learn about STEM education. Seeing all the cool things that our students get to use every day, I think, really excited and motivated the younger elementary students." Kiehlbauch wasn't the only one giving back at K-State Salina this past school year. Students from the campus's Alpha Eta Rho, an international co-ed aviation fraternity with more than 40 members on the campus, participated in six different&nbsp;service&nbsp;projects this past year. The projects ranged from helping first-year students move into the residence halls on campus in August to giving back to Salina businesses and organizations. Their tasks included volunteering at the Garage Automotive Museum and the Smoky Hill Museum&nbsp;street&nbsp;fair and&nbsp;parade. "This year, our fraternity members sat down and decided that we wanted to be a fixture in the Salina community more than ever," said&nbsp;Jack Valdez, senior in professional pilot,&nbsp;Olathe.&nbsp;"It was rewarding to get involved in the community this year and be a part of an organization that truly cares." Outside of giving back to the Salina community, these volunteer efforts also helped reinforce time management skills&nbsp;for&nbsp;K-State Salina students. Kiehlbauch&nbsp;said he&nbsp;recalls having to focus on&nbsp;these skills&nbsp;during&nbsp;the school year. On top of organizing numerous volunteer events, he is also a full-time student taking flight blocks and courses to become a pilot. Even with the long hours, Kiehlbauch said&nbsp;his experience from this past year was well worth the effort. With&nbsp;students successfully&nbsp;completing&nbsp;hundreds of hours&nbsp;of service work, the K-State Salina campus is expecting the list of projects to continue to grow into the next academic year. "We have found success in fostering a culture of giving back to our community," said Kyle Chamberlin, assistant dean of student life. "We want our students to feel a sense of ownership in finding and helping with these community service projects. With the sense of pride that has grown from this past year, we expect the number of hours and projects to continue to grow in the future."

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged sex crimes.

Just after 5p.m. Wednesday, police arrested 24-year-old Chase Newberry, 24, of Manhattan was on&nbsp; Riley County District Court warrant for rape and two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 This warrant stems from a March 23, 2022, rape in Manhattan involving a now 20-year-old female victim. 

Newberry remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $50,000.&nbsp; &nbsp;Police released no additional details.

Manhattan man held on $50K bond for alleged sex crimes

MANHATTAN - On Wednesday afternoon, around 3:00 pm, officers with the Riley County Police Department were called to the apartment complex located at 300 N 5th Street in Manhattan after a body was found on the roof of the first floor building.

Officers were taken to the roof and located 45-year-old Rick Stradtner's body on the roof of the building underneath his fourth-floor apartment.

At this time, RCPD has no reason to believe anyone else was involved in Stradtner's death.

The investigation into his death is ongoing.

In Manhattan, residents can visit both the Flint Hills Discovery Center and the Sunset Zoo using the Sunflower Summer program.

Sunflower Summer is an educational program promoting learning and family engagement during the summer months.

"Sunset Zoo is excited along with the Flint Hills Discovery Center to offer a free visit to many who may not have been to either unique attraction here in Manhattan. Being a part of this program opens doors for visitors from all across Kansas to come see Manhattan and the surrounding communities. We are thankful to be a part of the program," said Scott Shoemaker, Sunset Zoo Director. “We are thrilled to be part of Sunflower Summer for the third year in a row,” said Susan Adams, Flint Hills Discovery Center Director.&nbsp;“With Sunset Zoo joining the program and so many more great attractions across the Flint Hills region, this is the perfect opportunity for all families to get out and explore what Kansas has to offer."

Riley County Arrest Report May 24

Manhattan–&nbsp;Officials with the&nbsp;U.S. Department of Agriculture&nbsp;(USDA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)&nbsp;Science and Technology Directorate&nbsp;(S&amp;T) celebrated the dedication and ribbon-cutting of the&nbsp;National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility&nbsp;(NBAF) on Wednesday morning.

This is the first U.S. laboratory with biosafety level-4 containment capable of housing large livestock.&nbsp;

DHS S&amp;T and USDA have collaborated on the requirements for this next-generation science facility since 2006. DHS S&amp;T led NBAF’s design and construction, and USDA will own and operate the facility to protect the U.S. against transboundary and emerging animal diseases as well as zoonotic diseases capable of transferring from livestock to people.&nbsp;

The ceremony included remarks from many community, state and national leaders, including Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. &nbsp;

“This new, innovative facility will give USDA scientists access to cutting-edge, safe and secure technology so they can continue to lead the world in animal health research, training and diagnostics to protect our food supply, agricultural economy and public health,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “America’s farmers, ranchers and consumers count on our researchers and diagnosticians to understand, monitor for and develop solutions to combat a variety of high-consequence animal pathogens, and a facility of this magnitude positions us to respond.”&nbsp;

NBAF will replace DHS’ Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC), which is a biosafety level-3 facility in New York that is more than 68 years old. Manhattan, Kansas was selected as NBAF’s site in 2009. With more than 400 employees, USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will share NBAF’s operational responsibilities. These two agencies currently conduct research, training and diagnostic programs alongside DHS scientists at PIADC. &nbsp;

As part of the dedication program, Dr. Simon Liu, USDA Agricultural Research Service Administrator, led a moderated conversation with Jenny Lester Moffitt, USDA Marketing and Regulatory Programs Under Secretary; Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young, USDA Chief Scientist and Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics; and Julie Brewer, DHS S&amp;T Executive Director of Innovation &amp; Collaboration.&nbsp;

“NBAF is a strategic national asset that will help USDA stay proactive in leading efforts to protect public health and address new and emerging diseases,” said Jacobs-Young. “This new, modernized facility is a critical down payment in ensuring our country has the tools we need to keep the American people and our agricultural animals safe.”&nbsp;

The ceremony highlighted the state and local community's support. City of Manhattan Mayor Mark Hatesohl, Kansas State University President Dr. Richard Linton, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, and former U.S. Senator Pat Roberts gave remarks during the ceremony. &nbsp;

“NBAF’s Midwest location offers researchers and diagnosticians closer proximity to develop key partnerships with the animal health industry and several academic institutions,” said NBAF Director Dr. Alfonso Clavijo. “NBAF will create opportunities between scientists and animal health companies to enhance and expedite the transition of new veterinary countermeasures from research to market to protect the nation’s agriculture if needed.”&nbsp;

Adjacent to Kansas State University and on the Western edge of the largest concentration of animal health companies in the nation, the 48-acre NBAF campus includes more than 700,000 square feet of total building space. The main building, at 500,000 square feet, includes containment laboratories, animal holding facilities, office spaces, facility support areas and required safety systems — such as redundant HEPA air filtration and waste decontamination systems. &nbsp;

At NBAF, ARS will primarily focus on research to understand high-consequence and emerging animal diseases and develop countermeasures, such as vaccines and antivirals. APHIS will focus on prevention, surveillance, diagnosis and response to these diseases, including the expertise to manage two vaccine banks and train state and federal veterinarians to recognize livestock diseases.

Manhattan, Kansas was selected as NBAF’s site in 2009. With more than 400 employees, USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will share NBAF’s operational responsibilities. City of Manhattan Mayor Mark Hatesohl, Kansas State University President Dr. Richard Linton, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, and former U.S. Senator Pat Roberts gave remarks during the ceremony. &nbsp;“NBAF’s Midwest location offers researchers and diagnosticians closer proximity to develop key partnerships with the animal health industry and several academic institutions,” said NBAF Director Dr. Alfonso Clavijo. “NBAF will create opportunities between scientists and animal health companies to enhance and expedite the transition of new veterinary countermeasures from research to market to protect the nation’s agriculture if needed.”&nbsp;Adjacent to Kansas State University and on the Western edge of the largest concentration of animal health companies in the nation, the 48-acre NBAF campus includes more than 700,000 square feet of total building space. The main building, at 500,000 square feet, includes containment laboratories, animal holding facilities, office spaces, facility support areas and required safety systems — such as redundant HEPA air filtration and waste decontamination systems. &nbsp;At NBAF, ARS will primarily focus on research to understand high-consequence and emerging animal diseases and develop countermeasures, such as vaccines and antivirals. APHIS will focus on prevention, surveillance, diagnosis and response to these diseases, including the expertise to manage two vaccine banks and train state and federal veterinarians to recognize livestock diseases.

Cambridge Square celebrates remodeled clubhouse with ribbon cutting

MANHATTAN— The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has announced that the Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (KSFMNP) is increasing the value of coupons for low-income seniors from $35 to $50 this year. 

The coupons are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Seniors can apply at the County Agency on Aging between Thursday, June 1 and Friday, September 15, 2023, or until benefits are gone.

Eligible foods to purchase with the KSFMNP coupons from authorized farmers at participating farmers markets are defined as fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, locally produced honey and cut herbs produced in Kansas under normal growing conditions.

The coupons can only be used at vendors that accept those vouchers.

The coupons will be sent at once and available in $5 increments. Seniors are eligible if they complete an application and are 60 years or older or at least 55 years old and a member of an Indian Tribal Organization. Eligible seniors must also have an annual gross household income (before taxes are withheld) at or below 185% of the federal poverty level.&nbsp;

"Each vendor in the program has a sign that will say that they accept senior nutrition vouchers," Faidley said. "The customer will have to sign the bottom of the check. It's just like a normal check. You don't have to make it out to anybody. They are government issued checks. The vendor handles the cashing process of it."

Not all the same vendors will be taking checks.

"We'll have it listed on our Facebook page," Faidley said. "I don't know how they are doing that process this year. They've completely changed it."

State farmers market program for seniors increases benefits

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss is still a believer that the United States will not default on its debt, even as that cliff gets closer by the day.

"It's going to get done, but there's going to be a lot of volatility while it does get done," Goss said. "In other words, the stock market up and down, depending on whether there's an agreement or not an agreement. Of course, in the meantime, what we saw the last time this happened, that would be in 2011, we saw gold prices rise significantly as individuals sought safe havens for their funds. They just didn't want to be in corporate bonds, for example, that's a risky place to be right now."

<a href="https://home.treasury.gov/system/files/136/Debt-Limit-Letter-to-Congress-Members-20230522-McCarthy.pdf">In a Monday letter, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told House Speaker Kevin McCarthy</a> that it is 'highly likely' that the country could run out of ability to pay its bills in early June, possibly as early as June 1. Goss said the debt has grown by about $53,000 per individual since the pandemic.

"That's putting real pressure on the individual," Goss said. "We've handed off the debt to our children, our grandchildren, now our great-grandchildren. It's time we faced up to it. Now, we've reached the ceiling, now the question is what will happen on the first week of June? We'll have to wait and see, but I think it will be settled, but at a cost."

Yellen wrote that the cost of this brinksmanship can "cause serious harm to business and consumer confidence, raise short-term borrowing costs for taxpayers and negatively impact the credit rating of the United States."

The problem with only raising the debt ceiling by a trillion dollars or a little more is that the can won't be kicked very far down the road.

"We'll have to face this again next year," Goss said. "That's one of the proposals in the Republicans plan is you have to face up to the debt ceiling next year, that's, of course an election year. Neither the Republicans or the Democrats want to do that, but that's in there. On the positive side, this brings sensitivity to the voters, the individuals, the workers, to the debt problem."

The House is only supposed to be in session until Thursday and then Representatives would go home to their districts for the Memorial Day holiday.

This outdoor event will feature live music from the Salina Symphony, the <a href="https://home.army.mil/riley/index.php/tenants/1st-ID/1st-inf-div-headquarters-and-headquarters-battalion/1st-infantry-division-band">Fort Riley 1st Infantry Division Band</a>, and local band Everyday Lights.

Free entry into the museum will begin at 10 a.m., food vendors and educational activities will begin at 4 p.m., and music will start at 5:30 p.m. The second-annual Thank a World War II Veteran reception will start at 5 p.m. in the Visitors Center.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.1id.army.mil/About-Us/Units/1st-Infantry-Division-Artillery-DIVARTY/Commanding-Generals-Mounted-Color-Guard-CGMCG/">The Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard </a>will perform their cavalry tactics demonstrations at 6:30 and 8 p.m.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating phone scam in Pottawatomie County.

On Monday evening, a citizen filed a fraud report that included a thief who spoofed the incoming caller ID to the victim using Wamego Police Department's main number (785) 456-9553 and identified himself as a Wamego police officer.

As the Wamego Police department reminded the public, "an officer will never ask for payment over the telephone. If someone calls and claims to be a police officer, ask to meet them at the police department if you are unsure of their identity."

Eustice was issued a total bond of $13,000 and is no longer confined at the time of this report.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are warning residents of a new social media scam involving "attorney Larry R. Parker." 

According to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff, Parker&nbsp;is contacting people over Facebook messenger claiming to be an attorney and he was "given their information by a person that they know." He says he is working with an organization that helps veterans, elderly, and the downtrodden with financial assistance. He asks them to Fed-Ex a check for $200.00 to him and to open a bank account, saying that once he receives the money he will deposit either $100,000 or $200,000 into the account to assist them. 

The sheriff's office reported a local citizen was almost the victim of this scam but realized it before any money was sent. A search of Larry R. Parker on Facebook shows an attorney claiming to be an attorney who specializes in government grant money. The posts all appear from September 2022 and uses older photos.

Kansas State University has recognized Kenneth Harkin for distinguished veterinary teaching for the fifth time in his career. Harkin, Steve and Colleen Hodes Professor of Veterinary Medicine in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>&nbsp;and board-certified small animal internist in the Veterinary Health Center, was recognized with the Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award, which was presented during the college's honors banquet. Since 1963, the Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teaching Award has been presented at each of the U.S. veterinary colleges to an outstanding teacher who advances the veterinary profession by inspiring students to their highest levels of achievement and professionalism. "It's safe to say everyone in our college has been touched by Dr. Harkin's passioned contributions in clinics, in lecture and as a valued colleague," said James Roush, associate dean for academic programs and student success. "As a five-time Zoetis Distinguished Teacher — in 2001, 2008, 2013, 2017 and 2023 — he has achieved the veterinary college equivalent of NFL quarterback Tom Brady's five-time Super Bowl MVP record." Harkin instructs fourth-year veterinary students in clinical rotations through the internal medicine service and gives didactic lectures to third-year veterinary students in gastroenterology, hepatology, neurology and clinical hematology. He leads weekly case discussions for students in their pre-clinical years and serves as the faculty advisor for the American Animal Hospital Association student leadership team, the feline club and the cycling club. "I'm honored and humbled to be selected by the students for this award," said Harkin. "There is so much history and meaning behind the Zoetis Distinguished Teaching Award, and every year when I hear the winner announced I'm reminded of the importance of teaching and the impact that all of us in the College of Veterinary Medicine can have on future veterinarians." Roush said that in addition to teaching, Harkin was the recipient of the college's first William R. Prichard Service and Outreach Award in 2012. He also highlighted Harkin's "Thought for the Day" case presentation emails that are sent out regularly to benefit student learning. Harkin receives fifth Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award from K-State

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Depending on the time of year, army cutworms and armyworms can be a nemesis to farmers.&nbsp;

But in late spring, they’d much rather be dealing with the army cutworm.&nbsp;

“In the last week or two, the army cutworm is becoming an adult moth,” said Kansas State University entomologist Jeff Whitworth. “By Memorial Day weekend, those moths get together and head to the Rocky Mountains for the summer.”&nbsp;

Up to this point, Whitworth says, “they’re really just more of a nuisance. The moths don’t hurt (farmer’s crops) right now. They’re a nuisance, and they’re very quick. They’ll hide in your window sill or behind doors and fly through the house.”&nbsp;

The army cutworm is more problematic when it lays its eggs in the fall on anything green, which is usually wheat or alfalfa that time of year. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae feeds on the plants through the winter, hoping to survive and become meddlesome adults by spring.&nbsp;

Armyworms, on the other hand, can’t survive through the winter, and thus will lay their eggs on just about anything green, but prefer such grasses as wheat, brome, lawns, corn, sorghum and others. That leaves those plants particularly susceptible to feeding larvae.&nbsp;

“I have probably received more calls or pictures of armyworms this early in the season than I have for the last 10 years combined,” Whitworth said. “They prefer grasses, and that can be a real problem right now because we’ve had problems with our pastures the last 2-3 years. They have been laying their eggs and I suspect that those eggs will be hatching in the next couple weeks.”&nbsp;

Whitworth said farmers should be scouting their fields for young larvae in wheat, early planted corn, sorghum or any other crop they may have in the field right now. If they suspect an infestation, he suggests&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/statewide-locations.html" target="_blank">contacting the local extension agent</a>&nbsp;to help in identification and treatment.&nbsp;

Whitworth is also keeping watch for weevils showing up in farmer’s alfalfa fields.&nbsp;

“They are the number one pest in alfalfa year after year,” Whitworth said of the approximately quarter-inch-long adult beetle. “Generally speaking, you have to spray for them every year, otherwise you’re donating a portion of your first cutting to the alfalfa weevils.”&nbsp;

He said many growers may have sprayed “once or twice already.”&nbsp;

“The questions I’m getting,” he said, “is should I spray a third time? Generally the treatment threshold for alfalfa weevils is 30-50%, and what that means is that if you have one of every two or three stems infested, you probably should treat again.”&nbsp;

Whitworth said reports of alfalfa weevils hatching in Kansas fields were coming in by early April. “I recommend that if you are within 7-10 days of swathing or cutting the field, don’t spray it. If we get temperatures up around 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, the adults should take off and not come back until fall, and even if they’re there, they won’t be doing much damage.”&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY - On Thursday, May 18, 2023, the Agricultural Business Council recognized Marty Vanier, director of the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center at Kansas State University along with Blake Hurst, of Hurst Farms.

Vanier and Hurst were awarded the Jay B. Dillingham Award for Agricultural Leadership and Excellence, the highest award from the Agricultural Business Council.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – An official with Kansas 4-H Youth Development has announced that the program will launch a $100,000 initiative aimed at improving the mental health and wellbeing of youth during 4-H Discovery Days in early June.&nbsp;

Amy Sollock, a 4-H youth development specialist in southwest Kansas, said youth will be invited to participate in a series of ‘community conversations’ in which they’ll be encouraged to share their views on what it looks like to live a healthy lifestyle, issues they may struggle with, and more.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/conferences-events/discovery-days/index.html" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H Discovery Days</a>&nbsp;is set for June 7-9 on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan.&nbsp;

“We want to come together and create a space for youth to have meaningful conversations,” Sollock said. “We want to put youth in a position to where they have the agency to tell us what they see as a priority for their mental and physical well-being. Then, based on what they tell us, we’ll be able to put a plan together on how we want to address those topics.”&nbsp;

In January,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/news/stories/2023/01/4h-teams-with-healthy-blue-to-address-mental-health.html" target="_blank">the Kansas 4-H Foundation announced it had received $100,000</a>&nbsp;to implement a program called Healthy Blue – which is a partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City, and Anthem Partnership Holding Company.&nbsp;

As part of the program, Kansas 4-H agents may address such topics as healthy coping skills, interventions, fitness, nutrition, life skills, healthy peer-to-peer interactions and preventing substance abuse and addiction.&nbsp;

“I want youth to take the lead in what they feel like needs to be addressed,” Sollock said. “I want to know from young people where they see this going. We’ve been given a tremendous financial gift and I want to make sure that what we do with it makes an impact and will be beneficial for young people in our communities across Kansas.”&nbsp;

Elaine Johannes, the Kansas Health Foundation’s Distinguished Professor of Community Health at K-State, said open conversation with youth is especially important coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

“We’ve gone through the pandemic…but we’re now seeing the effects of that unintended isolation, (which included) not being able to have a routine, expecting to go to school every day with friendship groups, and more,” Johannes said.&nbsp;

In early May, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf" target="_blank">released a report</a>&nbsp;confirming negative health effects on Americans due to isolation and loneliness. May is recognized in the United States as Mental Health Awareness month.&nbsp;

“Physically, we seem to have higher blood pressure and hypertension due to a lack of people being connected,” Johannes said. “And people are having issues related to cholesterol; some of the research that looks at how we have higher cholesterol in our bloodstream when we have fewer opportunities to be socially connected is amazing.”&nbsp;

“From a social-emotional standpoint, we are a species that thrives on knowing that we are part of a community,” she adds. “Younger people – even those under age 9 – are feeling alone, and maybe depressed.”&nbsp;

A recent questionnaire given to younger people – called&nbsp;<a href="https://kctcdata.org/" target="_blank">Communities that Care</a>&nbsp;– indicated that youth in high school were thinking about hurting themselves. “I do think that Kansas kids are feeling the brunt of not being connected,” Johannes said.&nbsp;

Sollock notes that 4-H’s community conversations series – which will be offered in the state even after Discovery Days – is part of the solution.&nbsp;

“We’re focusing on a holistic, healthy being – both body and mind,” she said. “We want kids to develop the skills to be resilient, to overcome the challenges that they face so that they can become responsible, thriving adults.”&nbsp;

May is recognized in the United States as Mental Health Awareness month.&nbsp;“Physically, we seem to have higher blood pressure and hypertension due to a lack of people being connected,” Johannes said. “And people are having issues related to cholesterol; some of the research that looks at how we have higher cholesterol in our bloodstream when we have fewer opportunities to be socially connected is amazing.”&nbsp;“From a social-emotional standpoint, we are a species that thrives on knowing that we are part of a community,” she adds. “Younger people – even those under age 9 – are feeling alone, and maybe depressed.”&nbsp;A recent questionnaire given to younger people – called&nbsp;<a href="https://kctcdata.org/" target="_blank">Communities that Care</a>&nbsp;– indicated that youth in high school were thinking about hurting themselves. “I do think that Kansas kids are feeling the brunt of not being connected,” Johannes said.&nbsp;Sollock notes that 4-H’s community conversations series – which will be offered in the state even after Discovery Days – is part of the solution.&nbsp;“We’re focusing on a holistic, healthy being – both body and mind,” she said. “We want kids to develop the skills to be resilient, to overcome the challenges that they face so that they can become responsible, thriving adults.”&nbsp;More information on community conversations and other programs offered by the Kansas 4-H Youth Development program&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">is available online</a>&nbsp;or at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/statewide-locations.html" target="_blank">local extension offices in Kansas.</a>&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary.

Just after 11a.m. Friday, officers filed a report for burglary and theft in the 500 block of Pillsbury Dr. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Energy Center Manhattan Pool, 528, Pillsbury Drive was reported multiple miscellaneous pool items including pumps, filters, valves, a ladder deck, a spa vacuum, and more were stolen totaling approximately $13,700. 

It was also reported the catalytic converters from five vehicles on the property were cut off and stolen along with one diesel particulate filter for an approximate total loss of $6,000. 

It is unknown at this time if the two crimes are related. Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000
