On social media Saturday afternoon, Trooper Ben Gardner sent a big thank you to Trooper R. Davis for ensuring safety with a crucial traffic stop. Davis stopped a motorist for driving 119mph in a 75 zone on Interstate 70 eastbound in Dickinson County.&nbsp; The total fine for the speeding violatio is $513, according to Gardner. "Slow down and make our holiday travels safe for everyone."

Riley County Arrest Report Dec. 23

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.9% in November, according to a media release from the agency. This is unchanged from 2.9% in October and unchanged from 2.9% in November 2022.

“The Kansas unemployment rate remains near historic lows at 2.9% as the state’s labor market remains tight,” said labor economist, Nathan Kessler. “The unemployment rate has been very stable and was unchanged from last month and from November 2022.”

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 2,700 from October. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 2,100 over the month, while government increased by 600.

The unemployment rate in Riley County is down from 2.8 percent in October to 1.7 percent. The rate in Geary County fell from 4.2 to 3.3 percent. The rate also is down significantly in counties across the region.

Since November 2022 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 14,300. This change is due to an increase of 6,600 private sector jobs and an increase of 7,700 government jobs.

Jobless rate down in Riley County, across the state

Ian Punnett, 63, the Chief Operator and Faculty Advisor for K-State's student radio station, Wildcat 91.9 FM, passed away Thursday after a brief illness.

Punnett was a weekend host from his Manhattan home for the syndicated radio show Coast to Coast, a children's book author, and a recipient of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Distinguished Service Award.

Dan Engle, Eagle Radio Operations Manager in Manhattan and Junction City, said, "It is a huge loss for K-State and the radio community. " He also noted that Punnett was perceived as a great friend of Eagle Radio.

Chief Operator for K-State student radio station passes away

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —A law enforcement officer in Wabaunsee County is being recognized for his work to stop a child predator.

On Nov. 15, Corporal Jon Sumner of the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Office met with a female child victim and her parents at the sheriff's office in Alma, according to a media release.

The girl reported extreme distress after being contacted/solicited online by an aggressive child predator on the phone app Snapchat.

Sumner immediately began an equally aggressive and relentless offensive investigation of the Suspect. Upon review of the account, Sumner discovered evidence of horrific crimes against children. Through tireless investigative action, Sumner identified another 20 to 30 further child victims within the large cache of (CSAM) illegal digital media located within the suspect’s Snapchat account. 

The suspect via deception and threat was soliciting minors, receiving and transmitting child pornography, and transmitting obscene photographs of himself to children.&nbsp;

 Sumner discovered that the multiple victims located on the suspect’s accounts each appeared to be girls, well under the age of 18. Via his efforts alone, Sumner identified this child predator suspect as 25-year-old Miles Steven McGough of&nbsp;Castlerock, Colorado. 

Upon confirmation of positive identification, Sumner immediately contacted the Castlerock Colorado Police Department and conducted rapid multi-agency investigative liaison/action. 

Colorado authorities rapidly tasked their detectives who are assigned to the Colorado ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) Task Team to this case. All evidence and suspect information was given to Colorado authorities to ensure case continuance aid in apprehension efforts.

Colorado ICAC and Castlerock Police Department continued the investigation and identified an additional 2 dozen underage female victims. They also discovered that McGough had flown to Florida, and while there did allegedly rape an underage female who McGough had groomed online for months before flying to meet this child in person. 

Arrest warrants were issued and McGough was arrested in March 2023 in Douglas County Colorado as a Fugitive from Justice. 

On Dec. 7 in the Southern District of Florida, McGough was sentenced to 235 months, more than 19 years in prison by U.S. District Court Judge K. Michael Moore. 

McGough had previously pleaded guilty to enticing a minor victim to engage in criminal sexual activity. According to documents in support of his guilty plea, McGough ngaged in illegal conduct with a Southern District of Florida minor. This includes the suspect sending sexually explicit communications to the minor victim through the Snapchat messaging service. 

A search warrant of McGough's cellular phone revealed images of the suspects genitals that he shared with the minor victim, and McGough's cell phone revealed videos and images of the minor victim performing sex acts on him that were created during his visit to Florida. 

Judge Moore ordered McGough's term of incarceration be followed by 15 years of supervised release. McGough was also ordered to pay a $25,000 fine.

Detectives with Colorado ICAC, the Castlerock Colorado Police Department &amp; the Douglas County Colorado Sheriff's Office are also waiting for sentencing on 22 Felony sex crimes that will place McGough into Colorado State Prison for 15-20 years after his sentencing has been served at the federal level.

Fridge Wholesale Liquor and a 58-year-old woman reported two unknown suspects fraudulently bought liquor with the victim’s credit card. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $2,605.12.

Just before 3:30p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for theft and criminal use of a financial card in the 500 block of North 12th Street in Manhattan. Library Liquor reported two unknown suspects fraudulently bought liquor from the business. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $703.36.&nbsp;

Just after 3:30p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for theft and criminal use of a financial card in the 100 block of Riley Avenue in Ogden. 🎙: Little Apple Bites: A Plate Full of Healthy, Accessible Food

The Salina Police Department encourages residents to always lock their cars as they enter or leave locations due to a string of car thefts in town.

At around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 20, a 19-year-old Salina woman reported her 2013 Ford Focus stolen from the Kwik Shop at 2003 S. Ohio St. after leaving it running and unlocked outside the business.

"[She] went into the store, and then a white male exited the store and ended up stealing the vehicle," said Salina Police Capt. James Feldman. "An officer located it in the area of 657 Fairdale at the Kwik Shop and attempted to stop the vehicle. A pursuit occurred that led out into the county."

Feldman said due to the danger of pursuing someone on a dirt road, the officer decided to terminate the chase. The estimated cost of the vehicle is $7,000.

Police lost track of the stolen vehicle after terminating the chase, but yesterday, law enforcement authorities in Dickinson and Ottawa counties contacted Salina Police with news of the car thief's arrest. Feldman said the Kansas Highway Patrol was also involved.

On Wednesday, Dec. 20, at an undisclosed time, law enforcement in Junction City spotted the stolen car and pursued the vehicle into rural Dickinson County.

Feldman said the law enforcement authorities involved in the chase did not provide much information on the pursuit. KHP troopers arrested 31-year-old Salina resident Bradley Jameson for multiple traffic violations, flee and elude and two counts of felony theft.

Feldman said the status of the stolen vehicle is unknown to SPD since KHP is handling the car.

James Feldman. "An officer located it in the area of 657 Fairdale at the Kwik Shop and attempted to stop the vehicle. A pursuit occurred that led out into the county."Feldman said due to the danger of pursuing someone on a dirt road, the officer decided to terminate the chase. The estimated cost of the vehicle is $7,000.Police lost track of the stolen vehicle after terminating the chase, but yesterday, law enforcement authorities in Dickinson and Ottawa counties contacted Salina Police with news of the car thief's arrest. Feldman said the Kansas Highway Patrol was also involved.On Wednesday, Dec. 20, at an undisclosed time, law enforcement in Junction City spotted the stolen car and pursued the vehicle into rural Dickinson County.Feldman said the law enforcement authorities involved in the chase did not provide much information on the pursuit. KHP troopers arrested 31-year-old Salina resident Bradley Jameson for multiple traffic violations, flee and elude and two counts of felony theft.Feldman said the status of the stolen vehicle is unknown to SPD since KHP is handling the car.

UPDATE: Just before 3:30pm on December 14th, Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the area of Rockenham Road and Hanson Road on the report of a single vehicle crash.

When Deputies arrived on scene they found the vehicle in the creek, with both the driver and a passenger already out of the vehicle.

Both occupants declined medical treatment at the scene.

On Monday, December 18th, a wrecker service assisted the Pottawatomie County Deputies, and the&nbsp;Geary County Sheriff's Office/Junction City Fire Department Dive Team in removing the vehicle from the creek.

No citations were issued by law enforcement for this incident.

Earlier this week, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Geary County Dive Team to recover a vehicle after it crashed into a creek.

Both the driver and passenger of the vehicle escaped without injury.

The Geary County Dive Team is composed of members of the Geary County Sheriff's Office and the Junction City Fire Department.

On Sunday, December 24th, Prairie Paws Animal Shelter, Inc will take over operations of the animal shelter.

Kansas roads will soon be busy with holiday travelers going to and from their destinations for the holidays. The Kansas Highway Patrol, along with other law enforcement agencies across the state will be on the roadway to ensure the safety of motorists across the state.

Before hitting the road, the Patrol encourages motorists to plan ahead and take the following into consideration:

• Plan your travel route and communicate this to your family in case you are involved in a crash or experience mechanical problems with your vehicle.

• When you leave, start with a full tank of gas and a fully charged phone.

• The vehicle should also be stocked with beneficial items such as bottled water, blankets, non-perishable food, first aid kit and a flashlight with extra batteries. 

• We are in the peak time for car-deer crashes. Watch for deer, and if you see one, remember they seldom travel alone.

KHP shares travel tips ahead of the busy holiday season 

MANHATTAN - The Houston Street Reconstruction Project is projected to start up in mid-February 2024.&nbsp;

This project will include updates to the infrastructure along Houston Street from the intersection with 3rd Street through the intersection with 4th Street up to the east edge of the intersection with 5th Street.

Phase 1 and 2 of the project will be started and run simultaneously, with Phase 1 being completed within 2 months of the projected start date and Phase 2 taking an additional month for completion.

Phases 3 will start following the completion of phases 1 and 2, which will allow for some of the street and sidewalk access to be reopened, while another portion will be closed for updates.

The intersection at 4th Street and Houston will include updated crosswalks, bulbouts, planters and lighting to continue the aesthetics to tie the area back into the Poyntz area of Downtown Manhattan.

The 400 block of Houston Street will also receive updates to the sidewalks, and storm water infrastructure replacement under the street during the final phases of the project.

The entire project is expected to take approximately 7 months to complete the four phases.

Manhattan woman injured after crash with 15-year-old driver

MANHATTAN - Bringing the pasture to the pavement, the Aggieville Showdown Grand Drive returns to Aggieville on Saturday, April 6th.

The Aggieville Showdown is a national cattle jackpot show and was created by a group of friends passionate about agricultural education and looking for a way to bridge the gap between rural and urban lifestyles.

WABAUNSEE CO. - Following the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's media release regarding the <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/877f88d5-6eac-4457-a290-21bf9769bcb2">arrest of the Wabaunsee High School Wrestling Coach</a>, the USD 329-Wabaunsee Schools Superintendent has released a statement to Little Apple Post.

From Superintendent of Schools, Troy Pitsch, PHD:

'Thank you for reaching out concerning the recent arrest of Wrestling Coach Tyler Douglass.&nbsp; In light of the ongoing investigation, Mr. Douglass has been placed on administrative leave, prioritizing the safety of our students.&nbsp; We are fully cooperating with law enforcement, and updates will be provided as legally permissible.

Regarding the district's handling of this situation, decisions will be made in the best interest of our students, and any necessary updates will be communicated accordingly.'

USD 329 Wabaunsee Schools Superintendent releases statement on arrest 

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY —The game warden in&nbsp;Pottawatomie County&nbsp; is asking for the public's assistance in identifying the individual who poached a deer on private property and only took the head, according to a social media report from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Game Wardens.

The deer was found near the southeast corner of Galilee Road and Mt. Vernon Road in Pottawatomie County. 

The deer is suspected to have been taken within the last week. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Game Warden Matthew Cook at (785) 256-3603.

RENO COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged case of a suspect demanding money for not revealing some damaging information.

Just before 11:30a.m. Monday, officers filed a report for blackmail in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 21-year-old man reported an unknown suspect blackmailed him.
