RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for an alleged drug related death.

Just before 9:30p.m. Tuesday, police arrested Robert Boyles, Jr., 35, of Topeka, Kansas, was arrested in the 1000 block of South Seth Child Road, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Boyles was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for distribution of a controlled substance causing death, distribution of opiate/opium/narcotic/stimulant/heroin dosage &lt; 10 units, and use of a communication facility in the commission of a felony drug violation.

The arrest stems from an incident that occurred in August of 2021 wherein law enforcement officers investigated the overdose death of a 36-year-old woman. An affidavit in the investigation indicates a mixture of drugs including fentanyl contributed to her death, according to the RCPD.

&nbsp;Any individuals possessing pertinent information in the case are urged to come forward and assist law enforcement authorities.&nbsp;Boyles has previous convictions for ID theft, interference with law enforcement and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. He has been out of prison since December of 2022.

RILEY/POTTWATOMIE COUNTIES - According to a media release sent out on Tuesday(4/9) afternoon, the Burklund/Axelton Fire is considered to be 90% contained.

Pottawatomie County has released all mutual aid crews, while local volunteers continue to monitor the burned area for hotspots and areas of concern.

As for Riley County, crews from not only Riley County but also Pottawatomie County,&nbsp;Kansas Forest Service, Kansas City Kansas Wildland Task Force, Pittsburg, and Garden City, remain on scene monitoring fire conditions.

No aerial support was utilized on Tuesday.

“At this point, personnel and volunteers are mostly keeping an eye on things and addressing hot spots. We’re not worried about the fire advancing today, but we want to make sure nothing unexpected happens,” explained Doug Russell, Deputy Chief of Operations for Riley County Fire District #1.&nbsp;

Smoke and even flames in the burned areas can be expected for at least the next few days.

“Logs and brush piles in the burned areas will continue to smolder for a while,” said Russel Stukey, Fire Chief for Riley County Fire District #1. “Seeing smoke is not a cause for alarm at this time. However, if you believe you see fire that is escaping the blackened perimeter of a burned area, please call 911 right away.”&nbsp;

Pottawatomie County Fire Supervisor Jared Barnes reminds residents to check all past burns for anything that could escape and reignite the fire. Strong winds are predicted for late Wednesday into Thursday.

All roads previously closed in Riley County due to the Burklund/Axelton fire have since been reopened and all residents have been allowed to return home.

One home was lost in Riley County on Friday, and a few structures sustained fire damage over the weekend. No additional structures have been damaged in Riley County, and no structures in Pottawatomie County were lost or damaged as a result of this fire. No loss of livestock or injuries have been reported in either county.

“We appreciate all the work all the crews and volunteers have put in over the last several days. Conditions were difficult, but we never had a shortage of firefighters to do the work. It’s truly heartwarming to see how the community turns out to support each other during difficult times. Without all the volunteers in both counties, this disaster would have been a lot worse,” said Doug Russel.&nbsp;

“I also want to acknowledge the important sacrifice that firefighter families make when a firefighter is working to protect their neighbors and communities”, stated Jared Barnes. “Thank you for your support, encouragement, and understanding as they spend time away from loved ones.”

Thousands of acres have been burned as a result of this fire which started on Friday, April 5th in Pottawatomie County.

The official total number of acres burned should be released in the next few weeks.

Officials say Burklund/Axelton Fire now 90% contained

MANHATTAN - On the evening of Monday, April 8, 2024, officers with the Riley County Police Department executed a search warrant on Charoleis Lane.

RCPD arrested Derrick Duncan, Anthony Edwards and Brittany Clark in connection with the search warrant.

Officers arrested Derrick Duncan, 21, of Manhattan, was arrested&nbsp; on&nbsp;probable cause offenses of distribution of controlled substance causing death, distribute or possess with the intent to distribute drug paraphernalia for illegal use, possession of marijuana, aggravated battery knowingly causing great bodily harm or disfigurement x2, distribution of controlled substance causing great bodily harm, distribute opiates/opium/ narcotics or stimulant of an unknown quantity x2, distribution of opiate/narcotic/certain stimulant/heroin with a dosage of 10- &lt;100 within 1000 feet of a school, distribution of controlled substance causing great bodily harm, and distribution of opiates/opium/narcotics/stimulant of an unknown quantity x4. Duncan was not issued a bond at this time pending his first appearance and was confined to the Riley County Jail at the time of the media release.

Anthony Edwards, 38, of Manhattan, was arrested&nbsp;on probable cause offenses of distribution of opiate/opium/narcotics/stimulant/heroin &lt;3.5 grams within 1000 feet of a school, possession of opiates/opium/narcotics, use of a communication facility in the commission of a felony drug violation, probation violation (the original charge was for possession of drug paraphernalia), use/possession with the intent to use drug paraphernalia into the human body, possession of a depressant, and trafficking contraband into a correctional/care facility. Edwards was issued a total bond of $28,000 and was confined at the time of the media release.

Brittany Clark, 36, of Manhattan was arrested on&nbsp;probable cause offenses of distribution of opiate/opium/narcotics/stimulant/heroin &lt;3.5 grams within 1000 feet of a school, possession of opiate/opium/narcotic or certain stimulant x3, use/possession with the intent to use drug paraphernalia into the human body, possession of depressant, distribution or possession with the intent to distribute drug paraphernalia for illegal use, distribution of certain depressant dose 10-&lt;100 units, possession of marijuana, and distribution or possession with the intent to distribute marijuana within 1000 feet of a school &lt;25 grams. Clark was issued a total bond of $70,000 and was confined at the time of the media release.

RCPD continues to combat the use and distribution of illegal narcotics, including loss of life due to these narcotics.

The investigation remains ongoing. Any individuals possessing pertinent information are urged to come forward and assist law enforcement authorities. Lastly, RCPD would like to thank the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Kansas Highway Patrol for their assistance in this matter.&nbsp;

GEARY COUNTY —Fire destroyed a house in the 13000 block of Lower McDowell Creek Road and three nearby vehicles in rural Geary County Monday evening. The man and woman who lived at the home and one dog got out. One animal died.

Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges said the house was totally engulfed when firefighters arrived on the scene. The names of the residents have not been released pending completion of the investigation into the cause of the blaze. There will be a representative from the State Fire Marshal's Office called in to assist with the investigation on Tuesday. A damage estimate is not yet available.

Geary County sent 19 firefighters to battle the blaze, Grandview Plaza sent a water tanker, Riley County provided help with four vehicles to support water needs and J6 Ranch also provided water support. The Red Cross was contacted to provide support to the family.

Fire destroys rural Geary Co. home and vehicles

RILEY COUNTY - On Monday morning, Incident Commanders from both Pottawatomie and Riley Counties went on an aerial tour of the Burklund/Axelton fire by helicopter.

The fire is estimated to be at 80% containment, with no homes or structures being threatened as of 3:30 pm on Monday, April 8th.

“Thankfully, the forward progression of the fire has stopped. We’ll continue to see smoke from some interior areas that are still burning, but we’re happy to announce the fire is mostly under control at this time,” said Bill Waln, State Fire Management Officer with the Kansas Forest Service.

The name of the fire was updated to signify the unified response between both Pottawatomie and Riley County Fire fighters.

The fire was previous called a different name in each county, moving forward this fire will be referred to as the Burklund/Axelton fire with statistics and information being released as a coordinated effort between the two counties.

Emergency responders continue to monitor the fire area and are encouraging residents to remain aware, as the fire situation could change at a moments notice.

NORTON COUNTY —A Washington County Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 12:30a.m. Sunday in northwest Kansas.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Chevy Equinox driven by Alex J. Conn, 27, Greanleaf, was northbound on 1st Avenue at Main Street in Norton.

The SUV sideswiped a parked 2005 Peterbilt semi,&nbsp;continued northbound, crossing West Main Street, crossed the center line and struck a utility pole on the West side of 1st Avenue.

EMS transported Conn to the Norton County Hospital. He was also not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

AVOID THE AREA: US HWY 77 is closed north of Randolph due to Axelton Hill fire

RILEY COUNTY -&nbsp;A large wildfire is burning and spreading aggressively in the north part of Riley County this afternoon. 

As of 3:00 p.m. Saturday, 2 homes have been evacuated and 11 more have been notified evacuation may be necessary.

The fire started in Pottawatomie County and crossed the northern part of Tuttle Creek Lake into Riley County Friday evening. 

Weather conditions this afternoon(Saturday) are expected to cause rapid growth of wildfires due to extremely strong winds gusting to 60 mph, low humidity, and dry fuel.

Riley County Commission Chairman John Ford signed a declaration for a local disaster emergency this afternoon. The declaration allows local emergency services to request additional aid from state resources, including air support, to fight this fire.

Personnel, volunteer firefighters, and equipment resources&nbsp;from Riley, Marshal, Clay, the State of Kansas Wildlife and Parks, and Kansas Forest Service are on scene providing support and assistance. A firefighting aircraft has also been dispatched to the area.&nbsp;

Smoke could reduce visibility for drivers in the north part of the county, including the areas of Tuttle Creek Blvd/US 77 north of Randolph. Use caution and reduce speed if smoke is impacting the roadway.

Officials are asking anyone who burned outdoors within the past week to check and recheck those areas today. The strong winds can cause rekindles, and any fires outside will get out of control quickly. &nbsp;

In addition, Governor Laura Kelly issued a verbal state of disaster emergency proclamation at 5:14 p.m. Friday, April 5, due to increased fire weather conditions. This declaration allows resources to be used to provide state assistance.

Riley County Fire District #1 (RCFD#1) provides fire protection and emergency response in the unincorporated areas of Riley County, Kansas, including Leonardville, Ogden, and Randolph. Additionally, the department offers supplementary support to the City of Manhattan and the City of Riley. Covering approximately 500 square miles of suburban and rural terrain, this dedicated team responds to wildfires, brush fires, structure fires, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, road hazards, gas leaks, and other disasters. Dispatched by Riley County 911, the 15 strategically located fire stations, staffed by over 120 volunteer firefighters, ensure around-the-clock emergency response and risk reduction for the community.

Windy conditions are creating EXTREME fire danger in Riley County and surrounding counties.

Riley County Fire District #1 and Riley County Emergency Management are asking landowners, farmers, ranchers and anyone who has recently burned to recheck those areas for rekindling fires.

As of 2:00 pm, RCFD #1 crews were fighting a rekindled fire on Silver Creek Road, and had also fought a fire north of Randolph, which had blown across from Pottawatomie County.

The strong winds can cause embers in the previous burn sites to reignite, and the high winds could cause the fire to quickly get out of control.

Junction City firefighters worked a warehouse fire involving two sheds at 948&nbsp; Grant Ave. Friday. There were no injuries. According to Fire Chief Jason Lankas.&nbsp; A state fire marshal office representative was called in to help with the case but the cause is undetermined right now. Lankas indicated that the investigation would probably continue Monday.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY - A vehicle fire on Friday afternoon, slowed eastbound traffic through the area while emergency crews work to extinguish the fire.

The outside, eastbound lane will remain closed as emergency crews extinguish the fire and wait for a tow truck to remove the vehicle from the roadway.

According to KanDrive.gov, the eastbound right lane will remain closed until Monday morning.

GEARY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating the death of a man found at a rest stop in Geary County have identified James J. Cramer of St. Louis, Missouri.

Just before 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Geary County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the I-70 eastbound rest stop just before&nbsp;Moritz Road reference to a check welfare, according to a media release.

Deputies located Cramer in the driver’s seat of a gold van. The sheriff's office did not release his age or cause of death.

This case is still under investigation and the Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone that may have information on this case to call 785-238-2261.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged fraud in Manhattan.

Just after 3:30p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report of fraud in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 32-year-old man was reported someone used his social security number for tax purposes which resulted in a fraudulent deficit to the State of Kansas of $8,468.96 in taxes.&nbsp;

RCPD: Man reports $8,468 loss in Kansas tax fraud case

GEARY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 6:30p.m. Thursday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 GMC Sierra driven by Jacob Thomas&nbsp;Stevenson, 32, Abilene, was eastbound on Interstate 70&nbsp;under Milford Lake Road Bridge in the right lane.

The pickup rear-ended a 2016 Chevy Silverado hauling a Gator Made trailer and driven by William J. Carter, 23,&nbsp;Russellville, Kentucky, who was parked on the south shoulder and merged into the right lane at approximately 15 mph.&nbsp;

EMS transported Stevenson to Stormont Vail. Carter was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

MANHATTAN AND KANSAS CITY, KANSAS — Through the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.k-state.edu/105">K-State 105 initiative</a>, Kansas State University and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansashealthsystem.com/">The University of Kansas Health System</a>&nbsp;announced today that the organizations are working together to explore ways to support health care in rural Kansas communities. The two organizations made the announcement during a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/105/partners/university-of-kansas-health-system.html">joint news conference</a>.

The partnership is a first-of-its-kind collaboration that brings together the land-grant mission and statewide presence of K-State through K-State Research and Extension with the expertise and experience of the state's only academic health system.

"As a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/next-gen/">next-generation land-grant university</a>, Kansas State University has identified community health and well-being as a focus area for engagement and transforming lives in Kansas," said Marshall Stewart, K-State senior vice president and chief of staff. "We are thrilled to collaborate with our colleagues at The University of Kansas Health System and build a K-State 105 partnership that improves health care access for Kansans across the state."

Through the K-State 105 partnership, K-State and The University of Kansas Health System will work with the statewide K-State Research and Extension network to meaningfully address health care challenges, particularly in rural Kansas.

"Access to quality health care is critical for patients, and for their communities," said Bob Page, president and CEO of The University of Kansas Health System. "Our focus starts always with what is best for patients, and providing access to the expertise and resources of the state's only academic health system is one of many ways we are working to provide support across our state."

The two organizations are identifying health care areas for initial project focus. Some of these areas could include:

• Strategies to keep care local.• Caregiver support for patients with dementia. • Increasing access to digital and telehealth resources. • Programming focused on behavioral health needs in rural communities. • Addressing OB-GYN/high-risk pregnancy provider shortages. • Grant writing and facilitation resources.

"Communities large and small across Kansas have similar goals —The program will start with pilot projects in areas still being determined through collaboration with communities and with K-State Research and Extension offices."

These efforts are meant to support and augment the work already being done by dedicated physicians, nurses and care providers throughout the state.

The statewide K-State Research and Extension network has locations in all 105 counties and plays a key role in connecting with communities. Community vitality and health have long been a focus of K-State Research and Extension programming, and K-State Research and Extension agents understand the opportunities and challenges in their local communities.

This project will build on the work being done by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansashealthsystem.com/about-us/community/care-collaborative">Care Collaborative</a>, a health system program that originally started to drive better outcomes in stroke, heart attack and sepsis care in rural Kansas. It now reaches 73 counties statewide, providing access to a variety of tools, expertise and resources for rural health care providers. The Care Collaborative, now in its 10th year, has developed programming and tools for quality improvement, behavioral health, diabetes education and new payment models for rural providers to enhance sustainability as the health care landscape changes.

Riley County Arrest Report Apr. 4

RILEY COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just before 2p.m. Wednesday in Manhattan.

A 2011 Ford E450 driven by Bettina Moffith, 29, of Manhattan, a 2018 Subaru Outback driven by Dan Deines, 76, of Manhattan and a 2016 Dodge Caravan driven by William Crawford, 74, Manhattan involved in the multi-vehicle collision&nbsp; at the intersection of Claflin Road and North Seth Child Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Three people involved in the accident were transported to the hospital for what was initially believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the three were later air-lifted to Stormont Vail Medical Center for continued care as their conditions were upgraded. Moffith was cited for failure to yield at a red light, according to the RCPD.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional or specific details on the crash.

RILEY COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just before 2p.m. Wednesday in Manhattan.A 2011 Ford E450 driven by Bettina Moffith, 29, of Manhattan, a 2018 Subaru Outback driven by Dan Deines, 76, of Manhattan and a 2016 Dodge Caravan driven by William Crawford, 74, Manhattan involved in the multi-vehicle collision&nbsp; at the intersection of Claflin Road and North Seth Child Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.Three people involved in the accident were transported to the hospital for what was initially believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the three were later air-lifted to Stormont Vail Medical Center for continued care as their conditions were upgraded. Moffith was cited for failure to yield at a red light, according to the RCPD.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional or specific details on the crash.

MANHATTAN - On Tuesday, April 2nd, officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Daron Marsean Island Jones, just before 5:30 pm.

The arrest of Jones is connected to an incident from June 2023, where RCPD officers investigated the overdose death of a 25-year-old in Manhattan.

Jones has been charged with&nbsp;distribution of opiates in quantities surpassing 10 units, dissemination of a controlled substance resulting in fatality, and the utilization of a communication facility in the commission of a felony drug violation.
