CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR has postponed the May 9 race at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, which is under a stay-at-home order into June. NASCAR suspended its season four events into the year when sports shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic. It had listed Martinsville as its first race to resume. NASCAR says it is still committed to running all 36 races this year and will consider holding events without fans. To date, eight races have been postponed.&nbsp;

A second extension of the season ticket priority deadline has been implemented as fans can now put down a deposit of only $25 by June 1 to reserve their season tickets for the 2020 season. Additionally, the Ahearn Fund deadline has been extended to June 30.

“These remain unprecedented and uncertain times, and we want to make every possible accommodation we can to be of assistance to our fans,” Athletics Director&nbsp;Gene Taylor&nbsp;said. “We look forward to returning to a degree of normalcy and are working toward a return of sporting events, but in the meantime, we want our fans to feel comfortable and confident when they invest in our programs.”

In addition to the deadline extensions, there are now two payment plan options. The first is the previously announced three-month plan, while there is now a four-month option as well to pay over the months of May, June, July and August. Also, those participating in seating upgrades will go through that process in June.

Although K-State is preparing for competition to resume in the fall and taking steps to ensure that all ticket and parking requests will be fulfilled as scheduled, athletics officials continue to monitor the pandemic on a daily basis and will comply with the recommendations of the University, Big 12, NCAA and health and government officials. In the event that the season cannot be played as scheduled, various ticket and donation resolutions will be offered.

Season ticket options start at less than $22 per game. All season ticket prices in Bill Snyder Family Stadium remain unchanged for 2020.

Both the ticket office (1.800.221.CATS) and Ahearn Fund office (1.888.232.9074) have staff available to take calls 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. K-State announces new $25 deposit plan and deadline extension for football season tickets

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita State University is seeking to tear down its 74-year-old Cessna Stadium and replace it with a new smaller, multi-purpose stadium.

The university has asked the Kansas Board of Regents to allow it to raze the 30,000-seat stadium. Cessna is currently home to the Wichita State track and field team and is also home the nation’s largest high school track and field meet.

University officials say the condition of the amenities in the stadium have deteriorated drastically since the school’s football program was discontinued in 1986.

The proposal leaves in limbo what would happen to the Kansas high school state track and field meet, which has hosted around 3,500 athletes for all six championship meets for boys and girls for the last four decades.

The proposed smaller stadium would host not only Wichita State’s track and field events, but could also attract high school and club events for soccer, lacrosse and track and field, university officials said.

WSU estimates it will cost $1.4 million to tear down the building. That money would be raised from private funds and restricted fee funds, officials said.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State head coach&nbsp;Bruce Weber&nbsp;enhanced his already highly-regarded 2020 recruiting class with the signings of junior college All-American guard&nbsp;Rueadale “Rudi” Williams&nbsp;(Hamilton, Ontario/Forest Trail Academy/NE Oklahoma A&amp;M College)&nbsp;and prep standout&nbsp;Seryee Lewis&nbsp;(Chicago, Ill./AZ Compass Prep [Chandler, Ariz.])&nbsp;to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday (April 15).

A 6-foot-3, 180-pound point guard, Williams joins the Wildcats after a two-year stint at NE Oklahoma A&amp;M College in Miami, Oklahoma, where he led the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) in assists in 2019-20 for the Golden Norse, while the 6-foot-9, 205-pound forward Lewis arrives from AZ Compass Prep School in Chandler, Arizona where the Chicago native averaged a double-double this past season.

“We were excited about the initial group of signees in the Fall,” said Weber. “We were going to have a strong need to replace perimeter guys and that was our main concern with this signing class. If you look at the players we signed in the Fall (Davion Bradford,&nbsp;Luke Kasubke,&nbsp;Selton Miguel&nbsp;and&nbsp;Nijel Pack, we were able to fill every position with some versatility. I think the big key was the fact that we were able to get a true big man (Bradford). A 7-footer who already has a pretty good body, both strength and weight-wise.

“Our main focus with the second part of our signing class was to get an experienced point guard (Williams) to go along with our young players (DaJuan Gordon, Pack, Kasubke and Miguel) and then we wanted to bring in another athletic big guy (Lewis) to complement Davion (Bradford) and the guys we have returning (Levi Stockard III,&nbsp;Kaosi Ezeagu,&nbsp;Antonio Gordon&nbsp;and&nbsp;Montavious Murphy).”

The six-man class is the largest class in the Weber era and now includes players from two countries (Angola and Canada) and three states (Florida, Indiana and Missouri) at all five positions.

Much like the Fall Signing Class, which posted a collective 94-22 (.810) record in their final prep seasons in 2019-20, Lewis and Williams will also arrive at K-State with a winning mentality after having helped their teams to a combined 49-13 (.790) record this past season. Williams helped NE Oklahoma A&amp;M post its best two-year period (52-14; .788) in nearly 30 seasons, including a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament in 2018-19 and near repeat this past season after falling in the Region II Championship game. Lewis’ AZ Compass Prep team tallied a 24-6 mark in 2019-20 and advanced to the semifinals of The Grind Session World Championship, a postseason showcase for independent teams that play outside traditional state associations. A fellow semifinalist at the World Championship was West Oaks Academy in Orlando, Florida led by fellow signee&nbsp;Selton Miguel.

“I think it’s always important to bring in players from winning programs,” said Weber. “Anytime you can get a player who has come up through a program that’s won, I think they understand the importance of teamwork and what the main goal of basketball is which is to win.

“In Rudi’s case, when I asked him what do you want me to say about you as a player and his response was that ‘I win’ and ‘I want to win’. He led his team to Hutch (NJCAA National Tournament) as a freshman, won their conference in back-to-back years and lost in the finals (Region II) to return to Hutch this year. Nijel’s (Pack) team (Lawrence Central) was one of the best teams in Indiana, Davion’s team (Mehlville) lost to Luke’s team (Chaminade) to go to the Final Four and Selton’s team (West Oaks) was one of better teams in the country, winning at Oak Hill (Academy, which hadn’t lost in years at home, then beating Prolific (Prep, which was considered one of the top prep schools in the country, and they also won their conference title.

“We feel that we got kids that are about winning and care about winning and we hope that will be key for us moving forward.”

The first member of the Spring signing class to commit (March 19, Lewis was a key piece for head coach&nbsp;Ed Gipson’s&nbsp;AZ Compass Prep squad that could include as many as seven Division I signees in 2020. He averaged a double-double of 13.2 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game this past season. He scored 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting in the 81-70 quarterfinal win over Minnesota Prep at The Grind Session World Championship on March 11. He also had a near double-double (12 points and 8 rebounds) in a win over St. Louis Christian in the first round on March 10.

A native of Chicago, Lewis played for the acclaimed Mac Irvin Fire AAU program, where he led the squad to a 10-3 record in the 2019 Nike EYBL. He averaged 9.9 points on 64.1 percent shooting (50-of-78) with 5.4 rebounds in 18.2 minutes per game. He scored a season-high 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting against UPLAY Canada on May 11, 2019. He also played at Kenwood Academy and has a longtime friendship with rising sophomore&nbsp;DaJuan Gordon.

An outstanding student, Lewis also earned offers from Brown, Columbia and Yale in the Ivy League.

A native of Hamilton, Ontario, Williams developed into one of the top junior college point guards in the country at NE Oklahoma A&amp;M, where he set school records for both single season (267) and career (492) assists. He earned Second Team All-America honors from the NJCAA as a sophomore, while he was the NJCAA Region II Player of the Year as well as a first team all-conference and all-region selection.

The owner of six triple-doubles, including four in 2019-20, Williams averaged 21.0 points on 50.9 percent shooting (226-of-444, including 36.4 percent (39-of-107) from 3-point range, as a sophomore in 2019-20 with 8.9 assists, 6.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals in 32.8 minutes per game. CINCINNATI (AP) — The University of Cincinnati has eliminated its men’s soccer program as other colleges weigh cutbacks because of budget problems resulting from the coronavirus pandemic. 

Colleges are grappling with revenue losses from spring sports cancellations, including the NCAA basketball tournament. Eliminating sports is considered a last resort by athletic directors who face difficult choices. Earlier this month, Old Dominion eliminated wrestling as part of its response to the pandemic. And Baylor is putting off construction of its new basketball facility. 

Cincinnati athletic director John Cunningham expects other schools to face similar choices because of the uncertainty over fall sports, including football.

SOMERSET, N.J. (AP) — Former big league manager Jim Frey has died at age 88. Frey managed the Kansas City Royals to the 1980 AL pennant and the Chicago Cubs within one win of the 1984 World Series. 

Frey became friends in high school with future big league Don Zimmer, then spent 14 years in the minor leagues without reaching the majors. His 1980 Royals swept the Yankees in the ALCS, then lost to Philadelphia in a six-game World Series. His Cubs wasted a 2-0 lead against San Diego in the 1984 NLCS.

The USTA called it “in the best interest of society to take a collective pause” from tennis. The statement from the organization that runs the U.S. Open Grand Slam tournament said there is “the possibility” that the virus could be transferred among people via sharing and touching of tennis balls, net posts, court surfaces, benches or gate handles.

— The Preakness is looking for a new date for the Triple Crown race normally held on the third Saturday in May. The owners of Pimlico Race Course and the Maryland Jockey Club have also decided to cancel the infield party on race day. The Preakness usually draws more than 100,000 fans, most of whom gather on the infield. The Kentucky Derby was previously postponed from May 2 to Sept. 5.

— The U.S. Women's Open is moving from the end of spring to the middle of December. The USGA says the Women's Open at Champions Golf Club in Houston is moving from June 4-7 to Dec. 10-13. The LPGA has also postponed or canceled the next five events on its schedule. All but the Pure Silk Championship are getting new dates later in the year.

— The WNBA has postponed the start of its season because of the coronavirus pandemic. The league was set to open training camps on April 26 and the regular season was to begin on May 15. The WNBA will still hold a “virtual” draft on April 17. Two WNBA cities are major hot spots for the virus: New York and Seattle. The WNBA, which was set to begin its 24th season, is the longest running professional women's sports league.

Dr. Allen Sills, a neurosurgeon who has been with the NFL since 2017, says he and other league and team medical personnel have been in constant communication with health officials throughout the country, looking at the same data they are using to make public recommendations. The NFL also has consulted with the other major sports leagues and the players’ union.

Nominations open for K-State Athletics Hall of Fame

Eagle Radio-Salina's own Devin Hanney is the 2020 recipient of the Kansas Association of Broadcaster's Hod Humiston Award for Sports Broadcasting!

Hanney is sports director for Salina’s KINA (910 AM and 107.5 FM).

According to KAB, the Hod Humiston Award is given annually to a Kansas broadcaster who has made significant contributions to the field of sports broadcasting as well as work in the community.

"To receive the news from Jerry Hinrikus, who I consider one of my radio mentors, was really cool and honestly unexpected," Hanney told Salina Post. "The Hod Humiston Award has always been on my list of goals. I grew up listening to many of the voices that have received this award and it is a little overwhelming looking at the talent listed. I haven't really processed the recognition fully yet, but I think it's pretty awesome!"

The award is named for Hod Humiston who was the first television sportscaster in Kansas when he did play-by-play coverage of college games for KTVH (now KWCH TV, in Wichita. Humiston was founder and a co-owner of KSKU radio and was also employed as an announcer for

KWBW and KWHK radio stations in Hutchinson. He was instrumental in bringing the national junior college basketball tournament to Hutchinson, where it has been since 1949.

Hanney, a graduate of Chapman High School, has worked in sports broadcasting since 1994 when he began at Cloud County Community College student radio station KVCO, calling basketball games. He also began broadcasting high school sports during this time period, calling volleyball, basketball, and wrestling for Concordia High School.

After earning his degree at Cloud County, Hanney went on to work in the Abilene area for EBC, Inc., broadcasting area high school sports from 1997 through 2009. During this time period, Hanney called Abilene High School games and hosted weekly coaching shows featuring Dickinson County coaches on KABI 1560, announced the game of the week on KSAJ 98.5, and broadcast a daily sports update on both radio stations.

In 2009, Hanney became the voice of Southeast of Saline High School for the Rocking M Network on KVOB-FM 95.5 and helped with coverage for Bethany College and Salina High School South for KDMJ 101.7 and KZUH 92.7.

Since 2011, he has called Southeast of Saline High School athletics for Eagle Communications’ KINA.

In 2019, Hanney was the recipient of the Kansas State High School Activities Association's Oscar Stauffer Sportscaster of the Year Award.

Eagle Radio's Hanney wins KAB's Humiston Award

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State brought back former player Shane Southwell as an assistant basketball coach. The move rounds out Bruce Weber's staff after Brad Korn left to become the head coach at Southeast Missouri. 

Southwell was a standout for the Wildcats from 2010-14 and helped them to a school-record 27 wins as a junior. He returned as a graduate assistant coach from 2017-19 before spending last season as an assistant at Robert Morris. He helped the Colonials to a 20-win season and earn the Northeast Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Shane Southwell named to Kansas State men's basketball coaching staff

The NCAA will permit spring-sport Division I athletes who had their seasons shortened by the coronavirus outbreak to have an additional year of eligibility. 

The NCAA Division I Council voted to give college athletes who compete in spring sports such as baseball, softball and lacrosse a way to get back the season they lost, but did not guarantee financial aid. The NCAA will permit spring-sport Division I athletes who had their seasons shortened by the coronavirus outbreak to have an additional year of eligibility. The NCAA Division I Council voted to give college athletes who compete in spring sports such as baseball, softball and lacrosse a way to get back the season they lost, but did not guarantee financial aid. ORLANDO, FL (AP) —Orlando Magic forward Wes Iwundu not only decided to help those affected by the coronavirus pandemic, he chose to help out a teammate as well.

The Magic announced Monday that Iwundu donated to teammate Jonathan Isaac’s effort to feed children in Orlando who are in need. Isaac also revealed the donation on his social media platforms.

Isaac announced last week that he is teaming up with J.U.M.P. Ministries Global Church to provide hot breakfasts and lunches to schoolchildren on weekdays for the duration of the pandemic. Isaac also is helping families obtain nonperishable food items once a week, things like oatmeal, cereal and instant rice.
