MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State safeties coach&nbsp;Joe Klanderman&nbsp;has been promoted to defensive coordinator, while cornerbacks coach&nbsp;Van Malone&nbsp;has added the titles of assistant head coach and passing game coordinator, head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;announced Monday.

Klanderman, who has coached all three levels of the defense during his career, will serve as a defensive coordinator for a second time after holding the position from 2007 to 2013 at his alma mater, Minnesota State. He will continue to tutor the Wildcat safeties, as Klieman will search for a new linebackers coach to replace Scottie Hazelton, who left to become the defensive coordinator at Michigan State.

“Joe is one of the best defensive coaches I have ever been around, and he is ready for this role,” Klieman said. “In addition to already having coordinator experience, Joe knows our defense as well as anyone, and it is important to continue to develop our players and keep them in our system. We appreciate what Scottie did for our program this past year and hate to see him leave, but we are excited about our future with Coach Klanderman and the rest of our defensive staff.”

Klanderman and Malone were vital parts of a defensive staff that helped the Wildcats rank first in the nation in third down defense at 28.0%, which was the best by K-State since at least 2003. The Wildcats also ranked 15th nationally in first down defense (224) and put together a No. 2 ranking in the Big 12 in pass defense (202.9 yards per game, their best ranking in the conference since in five seasons. Additionally, K-State allowed just 21.4 points per game in 2019, its best mark since 2003.

“Van is a veteran coach who has immediately had a big impact on our program and student-athletes,” Klieman said. “Not only is he one of the most respected defensive coaches in college football, but his experience, leadership and development of young men is unmatched.”

Under Klanderman’s guidance,&nbsp;Denzel Goolsby&nbsp;earned 2019 Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors, the first Wildcat safety to do so since 2016.

<a>“I’m so appreciative to have the opportunity to expand my role in something much bigger than myself,” Klanderman said. “We’re going to work tirelessly to put a product on the field that Wildcat fans can be proud of. We will continue to push ahead with what we did a year ago and expand upon the foundation that was laid last season.”</a>

Klanderman came to Manhattan from North Dakota State after helping the Bison win four national titles in his five seasons on staff, which included a perfect 15-0 record in 2018. The NDSU defense was a major factor in its undefeated run as the Bison ranked first nationally with 23 interceptions, including six by safety Robbie Grimsley and five by safety James Hendricks.

Overall, the Bison ranked in the top five in scoring defense each of his five years on staff, including a No. 2 ranking in 2017 (11.6 points per game) and No. 3 spot in 2018 (12.6). His secondary has also helped NDSU rank in the top 11 in passing yards allowed in four of the five years, with a No. 3 national ranking in 2017 (147.9 yards per game).

Malone hit the ground running in 2019 by tutoring&nbsp;AJ Parker, a junior who picked up Honorable Mention All-Big 12 accolades despite missing the final five games of the year due to injury. At the time of his injury, Parker was tied for second in the Big 12 and 17th nationally in interceptions.

We came here to win championships – and it’s on the right trajectory – but we all have to be better and give more. This expanded role puts me in a great position to help us do that.”</a>

Malone came to Manhattan after one year working as a defensive quality control coach at Mississippi State, helping the Bulldogs earn an 8-4 record and a No. 1 national ranking in scoring defense and a No. 3 mark in total defense.

Prior to Mississippi State, Malone was the defensive coordinator at SMU for three seasons, including the 2017 campaign when he was named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National FBS Assistant Coach of the Year. That year, he tutored three All-AAC performers, including Justin Lawler, who was the conference’s leader in sacks.

Malone coached Lawler to his first All-AAC honor in 2016, a year he was joined on the list by cornerback Horace Richardson and safety Darrion Millines. Malone’s 2016 defense was statistically one of the 10 most improved in college football. The Mustangs ranked seventh nationally in interceptions per game and forced 26 turnovers overall. In fact, two of Malone’s three defenses finished in the top 20 in defensive turnovers.

K-State's Klanderman, Malone promoted on defensive staff

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Three Kansas State men’s basketball players were selected to Academic All-Big 12 Team on Thursday, including two on the First Team, as the league office announced its 34-member all-academic teams.

Senior&nbsp;Pierson McAtee&nbsp;and junior&nbsp;Cartier Diarra&nbsp;were named to the league’s 22-member first team, which consists of those student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA. Junior&nbsp;Mike McGuirl&nbsp;was selected to the 12-member second team, which honors those with a GPA of 3.0 to 3.19.

Both McAtee and McGuirl repeated their academic accolades from a year ago, while Diarra received the honor for the first time in his career. McAtee was a first team selection for the third time, while McGuirl is a two-time honoree to the team after earning first team accolades in 2018-19. McGuirl (2018) was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team as true freshmen.

In head coach&nbsp;Bruce Weber’s&nbsp;tenure at K-State, he has now seen 16 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big 12 honors a total of 23 times. The individual honors continue another solid academic year for the Wildcats, as all three selections were among nine players named to the Fall 2019 Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Football players from all ages can gain on-field instruction from head football coach, Chris Klieman, and the Wildcat coaching staff as Kansas State will host six camps over the summer months.

The K-State Football Camps will be held on Sunday, May 31; Friday, June 12; Saturday, June 13; Friday, June 19; and Friday July 31. Those camps are open to any and all entrants entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2020, as well as 2020 high school graduates and community-college players.

Each camp will be divided into morning and afternoon sessions with the morning focusing on those at the offensive and defensive line positions, while the afternoons will feature skill positions. Additionally, the camps on May 31 and June 13 will have an evening session to work with kickers, punters and long snappers.

In addition to the five regular camps, the Wildcats will also host a K-State Football Youth Camp on Sunday, June 14, for any and all campers enters grades 1-8 in the fall of 2020. Campers entering grades 1-4 will participate in the morning session, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., while the afternoon session for grades 5-8 will run from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The cost for each camp is $50, which includes a t-shirt. After falling behind 37-29 less than 2 minutes into the second half after a 7-2 run by Texas Tech, K-State followed with its own run to rally to within 44-42 after a layup by junior&nbsp;Cartier Diarra&nbsp;with 10:10 to play. Diarra stole the ball on the next possession and had a breakaway dunk that would have tied it at 44-all, but the ball hit the rim on the attempted dunk and was rebounded by sophomore&nbsp;Kyler Edwards&nbsp;who then dished it to Moretti for a wide open 3-pointer for a 47-42 lead with 9:46 to play.

The 3-pointer by Moretti ignited the pivotal 8-2 run that flipped a narrow 44-42 lead into a 52-44 advantage, as head coach&nbsp;Bruce Weber&nbsp;called his final timeout with 6:44 remaining. The lead grew to as many as 13 points (64-51) after a personal 5-0 run by Moretti at the 1:37 mark, but the Wildcats continued to fight, using an 8-0 run, to close to within 64-59 with 38 seconds left. However, they could get no closer the rest of the way, as freshman&nbsp;Jahmi’us Ramsey&nbsp;scored the Red Raiders’ last 5 points on a dunk and 3 free throws.

The loss was K-State’s sixth straight, which is the longest such streak in the Bruce Weber era and the longest by a Wildcat team since also dropping 6 in a row from Feb. 2-19, 2005.

Senior&nbsp;Xavier Sneed&nbsp;paced three Wildcats in double figures with 15 points on 5-of-12 field goals, including 2-of-5 from 3-point range, and a 3-of-4 effort from the free throw line to go with a game-high 4 steals, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in 37 minutes. Freshman&nbsp;Antonio Gordon&nbsp;tallied a near double-double with a season-high 14 points on 6-of-7 field goals, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc, to go with a game-high 8 rebounds.

Wildcats fall at Texas Tech

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Desmond Bane scored 17 points and TCU stopped a six-game losing streak with a 68-57 win over Kansas State. 

Bane scored all 12 of his second-half points from 3-point range and finished 5 of 10 from beyond the arc. That included the go-ahead shot with 6:30 remaining to start a 17-5 run to end the game. Xavier Sneed had 15 points for Kansas State. 

The Wildcats lost their fifth consecutive game and clinched a fourth losing Big 12 record in the past six years under coach Bruce Weber.

The game will tip at 4:01 p.m., CT on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with Clay Matvick (play-by-play) and Bryndon Manzer (analyst) on the call.</li><li>TCU will be looking to sweep the regular-season series for the first time in the Big 12 after winning the first contest in dramatic fashion, as Kevin Samuel’s tip-in with 2 seconds lifted the Horned Frogs to a 59-57 win at Bramlage Coliseum on Jan. 7. The game-winning tip-in came 11 seconds after junior David Sloan’s 3-pointer tied the game at 57-all that helped the Wildcats erase an 11-point second-half deficit. The Cowboys’ 81.3 field goal percentage in the second half was second-highest by an opponent in a half and the highest since Colorado connected on 82.4 percent on Jan. 24, 2009. OSU hit on an opponent-high 51.2 percent (22-of-43) for the game, including 57.1 percent (20-of-35) from inside the 3-point arc. Despite the hot shooting, K-State still had its opportunities in the game, drawing to within 49-47 on a layup by junior Cartier Diarra with just over 6 minutes to play and to within 59-55 with 1:24 remaing. Fans traveling to Manhattan for K-State football games this fall will have access to a convenient and time-saving new service, thanks to a new partnership between K-State Athletics and Tailgate Guys.

The Athletic Department announced that this partnership will allow K-State fans and alumni to save time through a variety of turnkey reserved tailgate package options that include tents, chairs, tables, coolers and other tailgating essentials. Tailgate Guys will operate both the 'Cat Town' area as well as a newly designated grass space just outside the northeast corner of the stadium.

K-State is now the seventh Big 12 Conference school partnership for Tailgate Guys.

Fans attending games at Bill Snyder Family Stadium for games this fall will have access to a full range of premium pregame tailgate package options and reserved locations in both designated locations. The turnkey tailgate packages that will be available throughout the 2020 home football schedule will have the capacity to service groups as small as five guests to large scale events of 1,000-plus. Each package will include turnkey setup and breakdown, game day bellhop services, high peak tents, DISH media packages and local catering options with options for additional customization.

Hundreds of thousands of Kansas City Chiefs fans braved sub-freezing wind chills to celebrate the team's first Super Bowl victory in 50 years. If head coach Andy Reid is to be believed, they'll be back for an encore next year. 

Fans lined the 2-mile parade route on Wednesday to thank their football heroes for bringing the Lombardi Trophy back to Kansas City and ending a Super Bowl drought that began after the Chiefs won Super Bowl IV in 1970. 

Hours before the parade, police stopped a car driven by an apparently impaired driver who drove through a barricade and along the parade route. The driver and another person were arrested.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Coming off an 8-5 campaign in the first season under head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;– a year in which the Wildcats tied for third in the Big 12 and earned a bowl berth for the ninth time in the last 10 years – anticipation is building for K-State’s 2020 football season as athletics officials announced today a full menu of ticket options when season tickets go on sale on Wednesday, February 5.

The Wildcats host seven home games, including SEC opponent Vanderbilt, in-state rival Kansas, and Big 12 foes Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. K-State begins the season against 2019 bowl game winner Buffalo on Saturday, September 5, and hosts five home games in the first six weeks of the season.

Fans will again be offered a variety of choices with season ticket options starting at less than $22 per game. All season ticket prices in Bill Snyder Family Stadium remain unchanged for 2020, including $150 view level season tickets, $150 season tickets for young alumni and the $199 Mobile Flex Ticket.

New season ticket holders, or 2019 season ticket holders who wish to change their seat location or add additional seats, can select their seat from any season ticket location that was available at the end of last season. Fans who order by the incentive deadline of March 1 will receive $10 off the $25 processing fee when ordering online in addition to a free gift of their choice between a free beer on the Goss Family South Tailgate Terrace, two free Section 28 tickets to the Oklahoma State game (limited 500&nbsp;accounts, two free individual game GA tickets to a soccer, volleyball, women’s basketball and baseball game, or a free Chick-fil-A sandwich at the stadium.

Any locations that are currently occupied and dropped by 2019 season ticket holders during the renewal process will only be available during the online seat selection process in May at an appointment time designated in priority point order. Fans who renew or purchase 2020 season tickets by the April 17 priority deadline will be able to upgrade their location during this online seat selection process in May.

K-State fans will notice changes in the south end of Bill Snyder Family Stadium this fall as two new video boards will be installed this offseason in the southeast and southwest corners to mirror those in the north end zone. Construction to the new covered concourse, permanent concessions, restrooms and premium seating options in the south end will be ongoing next fall and will be ready in time for the 2021 season.

K-State returns 10 starters – including six on defense – and 18 players overall who made at least one start in 2019.
