AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Kamaka Hepa scored 15 points and No. 4 Texas rebounded from its first Big 12 loss of the season by thumping Kansas State 82-67. 

The Longhorns broke the game open with an 18-0 run midway through the first half keyed by a burst of 3-pointers and a defensive press that rattled the Wildcats. Hepa made five 3-pointers in his first start and just his fourth game overall this season. Andrew Jones added 19 points for the Longhorns. Texas made 12 3-pointers. Kansas state has lost four in a row.

TOPEKA, Kan. -&nbsp;Cheryl Gleason, Assistant Executive Director of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, has announced her decision to retire from the KSHSAA staff effective July 1, 2021.&nbsp; She has served in this position since joining the staff on November 1, 1989.&nbsp;During her tenure, Gleason has been responsible for the administration of bowling, golf, gymnastics, sportsmanship summits, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, the KSHSAA Hall of Fame and the Kansas Association for Youth (KAY) program.&nbsp;Gleason was also involved with general interpretation of KSHSAA rules for the member schools of the Association.

A native of Columbus, Kansas, Gleason earned her bachelor’s degree at Southwestern College prior to completing a master’s in physical education at Pittsburg State University.&nbsp;She became a physical education instructor and coach at Caldwell Elementary and High School.&nbsp;Gleason later became a teacher and coach at Osawatomie High School prior to joining the Association staff. She has served as a teacher, coach, and administrator in support of Kansas schools for a total of 45 years.&nbsp;

“Ms. Gleason has been a faithful and valued member of our team as her service and leadership resulted in a positive impact on each member of our office staff while providing significant experiences and growth opportunities for students across Kansas,” as noted by KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick. “Her energy, creativity, and desire to connect students with learning opportunities have helped prepare students to be successful in life.”

During her 32-year career with the KSHSAA, Gleason grew the KAY program via conferences and leadership camps for which she administered hundreds of students each year. Her work with the KAY began as a counselor and staff member for camps the summer after graduating from high school – a full 18 years before joining the Association staff. Gleason’s efforts and enthusiasm helped with the founding of the KAY Alumni Network to offer support for members after high school graduation.

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;Kansas State will kick off the 2021 season on September 4 against Stanford at AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, as the two teams have been chosen for the 2021 Allstate Kickoff Classic, which annually hosts the premier season-opening contest in college football.

“We were honored when AT&amp;T Stadium contacted us about potentially playing in this prestigious game,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “The idea of taking a home game away from Manhattan and Bill Snyder Family Stadium is a big decision, and as a staff and university, we feel that it is an opportunity that we could not pass up.

“Our student-athletes will have the opportunity to play in one of the world’s finest venues, and Kansas State University and our football program will be in the national spotlight. Our fans have always enjoyed traveling to Arlington, and of course the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is one of our top markets for out of state graduates, and the 7,000-plus alums in the area will have the opportunity to support our team in person.”

The game will be the 12th contest to kick-off the college football season, the first as the Allstate Kickoff Classic and will mark the Wildcats’ second appearance at the venue.&nbsp;Past kickoff games in AT&amp;T Stadium have included some of the nation’s best programs such as Alabama, Michigan, Auburn, Wisconsin, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon and Florida, among others.&nbsp; “We’re very excited to welcome a terrific new partner in Allstate as the premier sponsor of this iconic game that will kick off the 2021 college football season,” said Stephen Jones, Chief Operating Officer of the Dallas Cowboys. “Here in Texas and across the country, the return of college football each year is a very special time. The Wildcats will be making their fourth appearance in the DFW area in non-conference games following Cotton Bowl appearances in 1997, 2001 and 2012.

Myers, president of Kansas State University. “K-State has nearly 15,000 alumni and friends in Texas, with half of those in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. With the season opener being moved to Arlington, the Wildcats will still have seven additional home games in Manhattan in 2021, including non-conference matchups with Southern Illinois (9/11) and Nevada (9/18), and five Big 12 home contests. Lasorda had a history of heart problems, including a heart attack in 1996 that ended his managerial career.

Brooks was named to the third team as a punt returner, while Vaughn was an honorable mention pick at running back.

Brooks, who earned his first-career All-America designation, averaged 23.7 yards on 11 punt returns with a pair of touchdowns as his average would have led the nation and set a school record if he had one more attempt to meet the NCAA required minimum of returns.

A product of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Brooks set a school’s single-game record with 189 punt-return yards and a pair of touchdowns in K-State’s 55-14 win over in-state rival Kansas. His two punt-return scores were the most in Big 12 history for a league game, while his 47.25-yard average was the highest of any player in the nation with at least four attempts since at least 1996.

Vaughn picked up his second All-America honor as he was also an honorable mention pick by Pro Football Focus. He was also named to the Freshman All-America team by&nbsp;The Athletic&nbsp;and the True Freshman of the Year by 247Sports.

The Round Rock, Texas, native totaled a school freshman record 642 rushing yards as he finished fourth in the Big 12 in rushing. His 1,221 all-purpose yards this year ranked second in the league. Vaughn also ranked 10th&nbsp;in the Big 12 in scoring and tied for fourth in touchdown scoring.

As part of the changes, eight sub-state pools of either four or five schools in each "pod," have been created.&nbsp;

Locally, the Junction City High School Blue Jays and Manhattan High School Indians have been placed together in the Topeka-Washburn Rural Sub-State also including Lawrence Free State, and Topeka High School.&nbsp;

Classes 4A, 5A and 6A will be grouped geographically into groups of four or five schools. The groups that have 5 teams will play the #4 vs. #5 seed game on Saturday, February 27. KSHSAA Announces Sub-State Groupings

"As we've made clear to the league on multiple occasions, we expect spring training and the regular season to start on time and as scheduled, consistent with our CBA," the union said in a statement. "The commissioner's office has assured us that they have instructed the clubs to prepare for an on-time start."

Spring training is scheduled to start on February 27, with Opening Day close behind on April 1; however, there is still uncertainty about those dates due to the Coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

The Kansas City Royals are currently scheduled to open the 2021 campaign at home against the Texas Rangers on April 1. An official start time has yet to be announced, and dates and times are still subject to change based on conditions of the pandemic within the United States.

The 9-2 Jayhawks won 93-64 at TCU, which had its five-game winning streak snapped. 

The win in Fort Worth on Tuesday night came three days after the Jayhawks' 25-point loss at home to Texas that matched the most lopsided win by an opponent in the 65-year history of Allen Fieldhouse. 

David McCormack scored a season-high 20 points for the Jayhawks. Chuck O'Bannon Jr. had 18 points for 9-3 TCU.

Texas Tech Holds Off K-State

MANHATTAN–&nbsp;Kansas State Athletics, in conjunction with university and county medical officials, have announced it has continued the pause of all women's basketball activities following the most recent COVID-19 test results and contact tracing procedures.

Kansas State women’s basketball is currently unable to meet the roster thresholds to play games established by the Big 12 Conference for the 2020-21 season.

As a result, K-State's upcoming games at Baylor on Sunday, January 10, and the home game on Thursday, January 14, against TCU, have been postponed. The Big 12 Conference will work with the three programs to reschedule the games for later in the season.

Games will be played on two courts inside Lucas Oil Stadium with only game at a time being played. Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Hinkle Fieldhouse, Indiana Farmers Coliseum, Mackey Arena at Purdue and Assembly Hall in Bloomington also will host games. Championship weekend is still scheduled for April 3 and April 5. Preliminary round dates have not yet been determined.
