Phyllis Marie Deckert, 101, Manhattan, Kansas, died October 15, 2022,&nbsp; at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community. She was born March 7, 1921, 
the second of four daughters to Lucius Higley and Dorothy Campbell at 
Chase, Kansas. Her parents, her husband Leslie, sisters Pauline, 
Rosalie, and Dory, granddaughter Rebecca, daughter-in-law Nancy preceded
 her in death. She was baptized a Presbyterian in Chase, Kansas. After 
the family’s move to a farm north of Pawnee Rock, she and her sisters 
cleaned the Bergthal Mennonite Church and played hide and seek among the
 monuments of the cemetery. She was a quiet Christian who helped with 
church dinners and attended women’s church activities.

Phyllis married Leslie R. Deckert on August 12, 1941, and they 
began life together on a small farm west of Pawnee Rock in Pawnee 
County. After forty years on the farm, they retired to Larned, Kansas, 
where Leslie passed away in 2004. Phyllis began residency in Manhattan 
in December 2017. Daughter Cora Colleen Smith and husband Larry of 
Wichita and son Andrew and wife Linda of Manhattan in addition to four 
grandchildren (Alysun and husband Mike of Seattle; Ryun and wife Angie 
of Kirkwood, Missouri; Scott and wife Emily of Lenexa, Kansas; and Matt 
and Jodie of Owatonna, Minnesota) and six grandchildren (Toby and Evie 
of Kirkwood, Charlotte and Clara of Lenexa, Jaycie and Tyler of 
Owattonna) survive Phyllis.

Phyllis’ high school graduation portrait showed a young woman 
unafraid of venturing into a rapidly changing world. Her pony rides to 
visit neighbors as a young girl were replaced by airplane travel to her 
granddaughter’s wedding in Seattle; crank telephones and party lines 
became cell phones; information transmitted by telegram, telephone, and 
the radio yielded to the TV and her computer; and living with the theory
 that kerosene was a cure- all gave way to penicillin, vaccines and 
joint replacements. With a shy smile, she stood at attention when 
airport security cautiously circled her with a wand because her knee 
replacements set off the alarms. With a twinkle in her eye of a 
ninety-year-old, she confessed she had traveled 90 mph in her bright 
candy-apple red VW Beetle to visit her daughter in Wichita.

Phyllis was a woman of many talents. She was known for her 
singing voice at the Pawnee Rock Methodist Church and Easter Messiah 
presentations in Larned. Many parents were the recipients of hand knit 
sweaters and booties for their newborns. She exhibited knitting and 
wheat weaving projects, cakes, china painting, and cookie jars at the 
Pawnee County Fair and Kansas State Fair where she received over 100 
colorful ribbons. A disqualification occurred when the judge discovered 
she had decorated an empty cake pan turned upside down. A child of the 
Great Depression, Phyllis Deckert’s scheme of things did not include 
wasting a good cake.

Graveside services in the Pawnee Rock cemetery will be held at 
3:00 p.m. Friday, October 21, 2022, with Larry Fry presiding. Visitation
 will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, October 20, 2022 at Beckwith 
Mortuary, Larned, Kansas.

Kenneth R. Pyke, 93 of Abilene passed away Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Memorial Hospital in Abilene. He was born September 11, 1929 in Abilene, Kansas, the son of Roy W. and Ruth K. (Gish) Pyke. Kenny grew up in Abilene, attended the Abilene school districts and graduated from Abilene High School. On October 28, 1951, he was united in marriage to Carole L. Allison in Wichita, Kansas. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1951, serving two years in the 11th Airborne stationed in Ft. Campbell. He was the manager at A&amp;P Grocery and later worked as an assistant team leader at Duckwalls. He was a member of the Abilene First Christian Church in Abilene, and was a member of the Eisenhower Foundation and the Dickinson County Historical Society.

 Kenny is survived by two daughters-in-law: Dianne (Wood) Pyke of Springfield, Missouri and Kathleen (Newlin) Pyke of Hays, Kansas. Grandchildren: Amanda (Pyke) Brantley (Stuart); Christopher Pyke; and Scott Pyke. Great-Grandchildren: Cobie, Coltin, and Ryker Pyke. One sister-in-law, Barbara Pyke and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife Carole, two sons, Thomas Pyke and Dale Pyke and a brother, Ralph Pyke.

 Funeral services for Kenny will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at the Abilene First Christian Church with Pastor Jason Kohler officiating. Kenneth R. Pyke

Wilberta Hulett, 85, of Saint George, KS, formerly from Humansville, MO, passed away October 11, 2022 at Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan, KS after a short illness.

On December 20, 1936 Claude and Martha (Ballard) Paul welcome into this world Wilberta Jane. Along with her big Sister Maggie Belle, they were the apples of their parents’ eyes. Even though there was a 10-year difference between the two sisters, they were extremely close and each other’s best friend until Maggie’s death.

In 1952 a tall lanky guy caught Wilberta’s eyes and she caught his eyes as well. The courtship began and the couple soon were almost inseparable. On July 31, 1954 Wilberta and Roy Hulett were married and the love affair continued for more than 61 years, until Roy’s passing in 2016. Although, Wilberta enjoyed her remaining years, her heart longed to be reunited with Roy Dee.

Wilberta happily followed Roy wherever she could while he served in the United States Army. While they explored the world the filled their home with four children, Ronda, Flora, Roy, Jr. and Jimmy. Raising her family was her priority during those years. Sharing her talents by making uniforms, flags, banners and other sport related items.

Wilberta wasn’t a soccer Mom, she was a Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Football, Scout, 4-H, Rodeo, Horse Shows, Saddle Club and Farm Mom. She also spent time volunteering at the children’s schools. Wilberta’s family was her pride and joy.

While Roy Dee served in Korea and Vietnam, Wilberta kept the home fires burning teaching their children about Faith. Teaching them to pray for their Daddy every night. Showing them the same sun and moon they saw was the same lights to guide their Daddy.

After Roy’s retirement from the Army, they returned home to Humansville, Missouri where they would live together until Roy Dee’s death.

While in Humansville, Wilberta worked as a Certified Med Tech at Big Springs Nursing Home for over 30 years.

Wilberta is survived by her children Ronda Lean, Collins MO, Flora Beckman, Clinton MO, Roy Jr. (Irma), Saint George KS, Jimmy (Angela) Omaha NE; brother-in-law Rex (Wanita) Hulett, Milford KS, sister-in-laws Catherine (Bill) Garrison, Springfield MO, Judy (Paul) Bissing, Seguin TX; her 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wilberta was preceded in death by her parents, Husband, son-in-law Larry Lean, sister Maggie (Floyd) Kelly, sisters-in-law Peggy, Waneta, Tudy and Gayle, brothers-in-law Elsworth, Vic and Paul.

Wilberta Hulett

Jane Ann (Stratton) Runyan, age 88, of Grinnell, Iowa died Monday evening, October 10, 2022, at Meadowlark Hills, in Manhattan, Kansas with her family by her bedside.

Jane was raised and grew up on a farm in Maxwell, Iowa where she met her lifelong friends Roberta and Paul Viers. She attended K-12 in Maxwell, graduating from Maxwell High School in 1952. After graduating from High School, Jane attended the Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls. Following her sophomore year Jane met and married John Avery Runyan from Collins, Iowa on October 2, 1954.

Jane worked for WHO-Radio/TV to support her husband through college at Drake University. She dedicated herself to raising her young family, while supporting her husband as his career was being established. Together they moved multiple times beginning in Des Moines, Iowa (1955), Gary/Valparaiso, IN (1956 to 1963), Pittsburgh, PA (1964 to 1967), Detroit, MI (1968 to 1969), Anniston, AL (1969 to 1972), Morgantown, WV (1972 to 1974), Montreal Quebec (1974 to 1976), and then finally settling in Grinnell, Iowa (1976).

Jane is survived by her six children: Rhonda Hudson, Grinnell, Iowa; Robin Runyan (Carol), Pennsauken, New Jersey; Ryan Runyan (Sharon), Manhattan, KS; Roberta Moore (Scott) Dallas, Georgia; Paul Runyan (Kathy) Webster City, Iowa; and Rachele Pang (Davin), Gilbert, Arizona. Jane’s youngest sister, Mary Lou Dahms, of Traer, Iowa; her 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her best friend Roberta Viers, son in law Marc Hudson, her brother Paul, sister Lois Seebach and brother-in-laws, Loren Seebach and Richard ‘Dick’ Dahms, and her granddaughter, Metta Runyan.

Jane worked for GTE in Grinnell, Iowa for over 19 years and retiring from the company in 1990. Following her retirement from GTE, Jane spent the next 20 years as a Sorority/Fraternity house mom at Kansas State University, Iowa State University - University of Iowa and Arizona State. During her summer breaks she enjoyed traveling to visit her children. She loved the young students she served as a “House Mother,” which also allowed her to live close to her children and grandchildren.&nbsp; Jane loved her grandchildren and took great pride planning tea parties for them, playing Pinochle, singing family songs she would write herself and dressing up in costumes for Halloween.

In 1996, Jane along with her best friend, Roberta Viers and daughter Roberta were security volunteers for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia and was adopted by many of the USA Basketball players. We can’t stress this enough---Jane’s passion in life was her family and the love of her life were her 6 children, her 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Jane was a believer in Jesus Christ and was baptized in the United Methodist Church denomination.

The family will greet friends during a visitation on April 14, 2023 with a Memorial Service to be held on April 15, 2023, times will be announced at later date.

Shirley Mae Cummings, 81, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away Thursday morning, October 6, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi Village in Manhattan.

She was born June 20, 1941, in Manhattan, Kansas, the daughter of Freeman E. and Nita M. (Stricklin) Biery. She lived most of her younger years in Manchester and Mankato, Kansas. After she graduated from Mankato High School she worked for Kansas State University until her retirement. She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan.

She married Richard A. Cummings in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta on August 24, 1968. They had one daughter, Gloria M. Cummings. Richard predeceased her on July 24, 2021.

Shirley is survived by daughter Gloria of Manhattan, and her five siblings, Terry L. Biery, Bonnie F. Biery, Galen E. (Cheryl) Biery, Rick F. (Maureen) Biery, and Teresa E. (Cynthia) Biery, eight nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

She will be remembered for her love of family and her desire to see and hear about them and all their activities.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Via Christi Village for the care and concern for Shirley’s comfort and well-being.

Ella Mae Kimmal, 82, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Friday (September 16, 2022) at her home surrounded by her family under the care of St. Croix Hospice.&nbsp; She went to be in her Heavenly Home and joined her husband, Richard, who passed away on September 11, 2022.

Born October 13, 1939 in Aurora, Kansas, Ella Mae was the daughter of Octave and Etta (Chaput) Istas.

Ella Mae was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and the St. Bernard Guild.&nbsp; She was an accomplished seamstress, quilter, and cook and enjoyed teaching these skills to many people over the years.&nbsp; A strong faith, positive outlook on life, and sense of humor made Ella Mae a blessing to be around and she was the happiest when giving of herself and helping others in need.&nbsp; She cherished the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was employed as a bookkeeper for Kaw Valley State Bank for many years until her retirement.

Ella Mae married her high school sweetheart, Richard L. Kimmal on November 16, 1957, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Concordia, KS. He preceded her in death on September 11, 2022. They enjoyed nearly 65 years of marriage and shared their love with three children, Cindy Bisnette (Tim) of Wamego, KS, Jerry Kimmal of Concordia, KS, and Kathy Wagoner (Paul) of Wamego, KS. Ella enjoyed being a grandmother to Jamie Swanson (Erik), Sam Bisnette (Magda), Adam Bisnette (Shanna), Jenna Barlow (Scott), and Megan Kugler (Jake) as well as to her twelve great-grandchildren, Keegan, Ameliah, and Emery Swanson, Isaac, Elijah, and Caleb Bisnette, Brenn, Blake and Trey Barlow, and Jax, Kate and Ava Kugler. She is also survived by her sister, Theresa Peltier (Jim) of Concordia, KS and many nieces and nephews.

Ella Mae was preceded in death by her parents; and thirteen siblings, Eldon, Art, Verle, Pat, Buck, Bill, Neoma, Clara, Marceline, Pauline, Marie, Gladys and Melvin.

Irene was an avid antique collector, yard sale bargainer and was passionate about interior design&nbsp;and decorating. She made everything in the home beautiful for her beloved family. Irene was known for her quirky sense of humor, free spirited approach to life and love of Shih Tzu dogs.

Irene worked many years in the restaurant business as an owner/operator and as a diamond consultant in the retail jewelry industry.

Chase Garrett Ehlers, the son of Ted and Marcia (Dunn) Ehlers, was 
born on June 12, 1996 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He passed away on October 10,
 2022 at Manhattan, Kansas at the age of 26 years, 3 months, 28 days.

Chase was baptized in the Webber United Methodist Church. 
Growing up, Chase attended many schools including Mt. View Elementary in
 Mt. View, Hawaii; North Polk Elementary School in Fort Polk, Louisiana;
 Stowers Elementary in Fort Benning, Georgia; Chapman Middle School in 
Chapman, Kansas and was a graduate of Lawrence/Nelson High School in 
Nelson, Nebraska. After graduating he attended the University of 
Nebraska for a time before enlisting in the United States Army on June 
22, 2015 earning the National Defense service medal and Army service 
Ribbon. Chase was honorably discharged on December 20, 2017 and 
continued his education at the Kansas State University where he 
presently was enrolled.

Throughout Chase’s life, he lived in the communities of Helemano,
 HI, Fort Benning, GA, Mountain View, HI, Fort Polk, LA, Chapman, KS, 
Nelson, NE, presently living in Manhattan, KS.

Chase was preceded in death by his grandparents Duane and Pat

Carolyn Sue “Nana” Knorr, age 72, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2022 at the Leonardville Nursing Home.

She was born on February 3, 1950 in San Diego, California, the daughter of LaVonne Franklin and Mary Louise (Herrod) Bird.&nbsp; She was one of seven children.

She is survived by four daughters, Marlo Hoffman and husband Josh, Danyale Knorr, Lisa Bailey and husband Daniel, Mari Graham and husband Shannon; thirteen grandchildren, Boo Boo, Devin, Sissy, Hanny Banany, Bubby, Randi Pants, Timmer, Kelli bug, Lizard, Emmy Lou, Davey boy, Annie, and Brooky Bear; four great grandchildren and one sibling, Pamela Hernandez of Santee, California.

She worked in a variety of jobs throughout her life, but always enjoyed working and volunteering at the Leonardville Nursing Home.&nbsp; Her grandchildren were her life.&nbsp;Nana was a free spirit. She was an incredible storyteller with the gift of humor.&nbsp;Her creative side was displayed by her arts and crafts and drawings.&nbsp;Nana was authentic, a genuine human, a comedic hippie, a bona-fide gladiator, and the matriarch of the pinky clan. PINKY!! The Nan, the myth, the legend!!

Cremation is planned with a Celebration of Life to be held at 11:00 a.m. on November 19, 2022 at the Alert Covenant Church.&nbsp; Private family inurnment will be in the Leonardville City Cemetery.

Linda Diane Mays, age 72 of Green, was called to heaven on October 7, 2022.

She was born on February 4, 1950 in Clay Center, the daughter of Orville and Lois Asp.

On June 8, 1971, she married Roland Dean Mays at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Clay Center.&nbsp; To this union, two daughters were born, Jennifer Diane on April 11, 1972 and Katie Nicole on February 5, 1981.

Two sons-in-law became family when Michael Anderson married Katie on June 27, 1998 and Jonathan Wilson married Jennifer on June 29, 2002.

Linda’s four grandchildren were the light of her life.&nbsp; Kurtis Dean Anderson - August 25, 1998, Joshua Michael Wilson - August 8, 2005, Joseph Dean Wilson - February 8, 2007 and Lillian Kay Anderson - July 4, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Robert and her grandson, Kurtis Anderson.

She is survived by her husband, Roland Mays of Green; her daughters, Jenny (Jon) Wilson of Cordell, Oklahoma and Katie (Mike) Anderson of Green; her sister, Kim (Stan) Fry of Green; three grandchildren, Josh Wilson, Joe Wilson and Lilly Anderson and a host of other family and friends.

On Tuesday, October 11th, Daniel (Dan) Lee Jones passed away in Abilene, Kansas. He was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. He was 73. Dan was born to Harry and Margaret Jones on October 24,1948 in Junction City, KS. He lived for many years in Enterprise until his family moved to Chapman when he was in middle school. His family were members of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Chapman. In 1966, he graduated from Dickinson County Community High School. He attended Kansas State Technical Institute in Salina and received an associate degree in Airframe &amp; Powerplant as well as Computer Science. He married Christine (Chris) Schlesener on July 29, 1974. Together, Dan and Chris moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma and worked for Applied Automation which was later acquired by ABB. He worked as a computer systems analyst for 37 years until he retired in 2011. He was proud of the work he did and he valued the relationships and friendships he formed along the way. His main goal was to make everyone else's job easier. In 2016, Dan &amp; Chris moved full time to their lake home on Grand Lake in Jay, Oklahoma. Dan enjoyed fixing up this home for his family and friends and always had a to-do list with many projects. He was a man with many hidden talents from working on cars, to electrical and plumbing. There was never a task that he wouldn’t try. Dan also loved fishing, hunting, and sightseeing at Grand Lake but his true love was spending time with his daughters and granddaughters. There was never a play, performance, or athletic competition that he missed. When his daughters were growing up, he could be found volunteering his time coaching many youth sports teams in the Bartlesville area including Washington County and Blazer ASA Softball. He also coached many YMCA and AAU Basketball teams. He was passionate about teaching everyone to play the game the correct way and believed that so many life lessons could be learned by playing sports. He loved his alma mater, The Chapman Irish, and would be seen and heard at many sporting events loudly cheering them on. Dan was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Mike Dolton. He is survived by his wife Chris of 48 years; his daughters, Dr. Stacy Jones of Salina, KS and Sara (Kyle) Cook and granddaughters Callie and Madison Cook of Chapman, KS. He is also survived by his sisters, Diane Dolton of Salina, KS and Kathy Riffel of Topeka, KS as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Visitation will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Chapman, KS from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, October 16.&nbsp; A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 17 at 10 a.m. at St.&nbsp; Michael’s followed by burial at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Chapman.

He loved his alma mater, The Chapman Irish, and would be seen and heard at many sporting events loudly cheering them on. Dan was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Mike Dolton. He is survived by his wife Chris of 48 years; his daughters, Dr. Stacy Jones of Salina, KS and Sara (Kyle) Cook and granddaughters Callie and Madison Cook of Chapman, KS. He is also survived by his sisters, Diane Dolton of Salina, KS and Kathy Riffel of Topeka, KS as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Visitation will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Chapman, KS from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, October 16.&nbsp; A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 17 at 10 a.m. at St.&nbsp; Michael’s followed by burial at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Chapman. Wilma Jean Anderson, age 93, of Manhattan, died October 9, 2022, at Stoneybrook Retirement Community.

She was born July 2, 1929, in Cleburne, Kansas, the daughter of Chester Cordell and Theresa E. (Christopher) Wilkinson.

On January 11, 1947, she was married to Kenneth W. Anderson. Kenneth preceded her in death on June 11, 1998.

Wilma Jean was a homemaker and was the bookkeeper/receptionist with her husband at Anderson Supply Company.

She graduated from Manhattan High School in 1947. She was a member of College Avenue United Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was an avid bowler for many years.

Survivors include her three daughters: Wanda Sue Edinger and Karen Kay Humphrey and her husband Robert Harris all of Broken Bow, OK, and Lea Ann Eichem and her husband Tony of Belvue, KS; two grandchildren: Randall Gillette and Shana Jahnke; seven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; her son Chuck; two grandchildren: Kassandra and Anglea; and her brother Don Wilkinson.

Private family graveside services will be held at Sunset Cemetery.

Wilma Jean Anderson

Mark Samuel Weis lived his fifty-eight years on earth with a full heart, a bright smile, and an unrelenting spirit. When he was a child he pursued his love of music, nature, service, and athletics. During his time at Manhattan High school he played Varsity Basketball, sang in the school choir (Chamber and Pops choir) and earned his way to becoming an Eagle Scout. During his time as a scout he was selected to participate in the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and Scout High-Adventure Camp in Canada, which are high honors in the Eagle Scout program. When he was just sixteen he went to live in Peru for a summer, where he became fluent in Spanish. After returning to the United States and graduating from Manhattan High School with honors he attended the University of Kansas, where he earned a double bachelors in Biology and English (again with honors) while making memories with his brothers in Kappa Sigma fraternity. He accomplished his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, after attending medical school at Kansas as well, a double Jayhawk. During his life he used his creativity combined with his knowledge of medicine to undertake several entrepreneurship endeavors. In his later years he became an author, and accomplished the feat of having six different books published. But most importantly, he lived his life as a devout Christian, a true believer; one who would share his love and fear of God with anyone and everyone would listen. At just twenty-four years old he embarked on a Mission trip for Mercy Ships, where he helped treat and heal children with cleft palates in Jamaica; and witnessed to the people there in Christ name.

At thirty-five years old, he persevered through a medical condition that would have left most people in a state of defeat. While living in Bowling Green, Kentucky and working as a doctor; he was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. A tragic fate for anyone, but even more devastating for a man beginning his career, who at the time had a five-year old son and a two-year old daughter. But he met his disease without fear, and agreed to undergo, what was at the time; an experimental procedure to remove his tumor and save his life. He went to Boston to be treated by Harvard University’s Head Neurosurgeon, Dr. Peter McLaren Black. He received that surgery, knowing that he only had a 10% chance of waking up from it. But, with God at his side, he had no fear. He felt he had to do whatever it took to survive; to be a father to his children. He survived that lobotomy, losing fifteen percent of his brain in the process, but retaining his life. His doctors called his recovery a “miracle.” He felt that every day was a gift after that, and he treated the next twenty-three years after that surgery with love and gratitude.

Surviving that surgery had a cost, it led to him having many seizures, pain and an overall health decline for the rest of his life; which, like everything else, he faced with a righteous level of bravery. The way he handled it, you would have thought his seizures were a mild inconvenience to him. Every problem in his life that would be absolutely traumatic for most people, he took in stride. Two years after receiving that surgery, in 2002 he undertook another mission trip, this time to Africa. Where he treated two different tribes in Tanzania and Kenya with medical issues while delivering the Word of God. He loved his life, he loved Jesus, and he loved his family with his whole heart. That love drove him to conquer every obstacle in his way.

In 2007 he began his own medical practice in Lexington, Kentucky. The success he cultivated there led to him being offered a job in 2009 at Fort Riley where he became the head of their “RESPECT-Mil” program which treated veterans diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. After proving his value in treating the nations’ soldiers he moved to Washington D.C., and began working at the prestigious Walter Reed Medical Center, where he was the lead primary care proponent for the U.S. Department of Defense suicide-prevention team (RESPECT-Mil). In 2012 he decided that he had accomplished everything he wanted to as a doctor, and began writing books, became published several times over, and pursued his own creative medical entrepreneurship endeavors. He wanted to help people with technology he thought would be the forefront of health for years to come, including hormone therapy, stem cells, and alternative medicine. He pursued these business interests in Phoenix, Arizona, a place he felt a special bond with and where he could be close to his beloved brother (Ted Weis), his nieces (Isabella and Julia Weis) and his daughter who he adored (Caroline Weis).

Although he left us far too soon and unexpectedly, his family will always hold on to the unconditional love he gave us. Mark was preceded in his passing, by the passing of his father, Dr. Jerry Samuel Weis just a month prior in August 2022. The month before Mark’s passing, he spent his time in Manhattan, Kansas, taking care of his grieving mother (Linda Weis) who was mourning the loss of her husband (Jerry Weis). Mark quite literally spent his whole life helping others and spreading love. It gives his family comfort knowing he is at peace with his Lord, Jesus Christ in Paradise.

Mark is survived by his two children: Wilson and Caroline; his mother Linda B. Weis; two siblings: Ted and Stephanie Grynkiewicz (Ross); and three nieces and one nephew: Isabella and Julia Weis, Joshua and Samantha Grynkiewicz.

A Celebration of Mark’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, November 28, 2022, at the First Lutheran Church, 930 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, with Reverend Stephen Haverlah officiating. Inurnment will be in Sunrise Cemetery next to his father.

Mark Samuel Weis, MD

David Lee Rogers, 76, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2022,&nbsp; at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO from complications of Parkinson’s 
Disease.  His family was by his side with the Chaplain praying over him.
  David was born on April 16, 1946, in Denver, CO.

David
 grew up in Stockton, KS where he made life-long friends and memories, 
graduating from Stockton High School Class of ‘64. He was proud of his 
athletic abilities to set school track records, play baseball and 
football.  Dave furthered his education at Kansas University, Fort Hays 
State, and graduated from Washburn University with a degree in 
Economics. He was also a Certified Baseball Coach.

On 
April 2, 1965, he met Merena Hollingshead at a teen dance in 
Phillipsburg.  After a whirlwind courtship, their love was sealed in 
marriage on September 24, 1965, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in 
Stockton. They recently observed their 57th wedding anniversary.  One of
 Dave’s favorite saying was “the best decision two teenagers ever made”.
  Dave and Merena were blessed with two beautiful baby girls who grew to
 be beautiful ladies. Through the years they lived in Stockton, Lawrence
 and Topeka, KS; Omaha, NE; and Nixa, MO.

Dave never 
met a stranger and loved telling stories of growing up in a small town, 
racing homing pigeons, and playing/coaching baseball.  Most of all, Dave
 treasured spending time with his family.

David was 
preceded in death by his parents Linus and Ellen Rogers, parents-in-law 
Roy and Luella Hollingshead, brothers-in-law Jerry Sterling and Raymond 
Schick.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of the 
home; daughters Shari (Andrew) Cole of Bentonville, AR, and Shani 
Burkhart of Springfield, MO; sisters Patti Sterling of Stockton, KS;

A Graveside service will 
be held on Monday, October 17, 2022, at 12:00 PM at the Fairview Cemetery
 in Phillipsburg, Kansas. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5PM until 
7PM at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton, Kansas. The family ask
 that friends and family join for food and fellowship immediately 
following the burial at El A De Oros Mexican Restaurant in Phillipsburg.

In

Hospital, who provided healing care to great-grandson Ben, when he was 5

Virginia Jean Glenn of League City, Texas passed away on October 10, 2022, at the age of 95.&nbsp; She is survived by her husband, Dean Glenn, 
with whom she shared 65 years of marriage, and daughters Sharon (Rob) 
Kain of Salt Lake City, UT and Susan (Craig) Kersting of Sugar Land, Tx.
 and grandchildren Katherine Kain, Jeffrey Kain, Cameron Kersting, 
Lauren Kersting and several nieces.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her son Steven, and her sister Marian Larson.

Born in Courtland, Kansas, to Howard and Edna Barber on July 15, 1927,&nbsp; she was raised on the family farm in Republic County Kansas. Jean 
graduated from Courtland High School in Courtland, Kansas.&nbsp; She attended
 Brown Mackie Business School and was a receptionist for Great Plains 
Insurance Company in Salina, Kansas.

Jean was a member of the Salina Methodist Church and there she met 
and married her husband, Dean. “Dean and Jean” moved to Manhattan, 
Kansas for Dean to attend Kansas State University and where Jean became a
 member of the “Dames Club” of K-State. Jean became a full-time 
homemaker when their son Steven was born.

Jean loved sewing, embroidery, quilting, ceramics and various other 
arts and crafts. She also loved plants and took special pride in her 
vegetable garden. Jean will be remembered as a loving and caring mother 
and grandmother.

Jean was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church and previously a 
member of the United Methodist Women (UMW) and Circle and is presently a
 member of the Friendswood United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be held at Crowder Funeral Home in League City 
October 13, 2022, at 1:30 pm, Funeral Service will follow at 2:30 pm. Jean 
will be laid to rest at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Houston Texas.

Virginia Jean Glenn

Amos J. Bozarth Jr. was born April 13, 1943 on a farm near Laverne, 
Oklahoma, to Amos J Bozarth Sr. and Phyllis Jean (Cole) Bozarth. He 
departed this life October 9, 2022, at Wichita, KS at the age of 79 
years, 5 months and 26 days.

For those who would like to join in the celebration of A.J.’s life, 
the funeral services will be at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day
 Saints, 7834 West 29th St. N. Wichita, 67205 on Monday, October 17th 
with the viewing from 10:00-10:45am and funeral service at 11:00am. 
Graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. Conway Springs Cemetery, 
Conway Springs, Kansas. (2nd Addition).

A.J. spent his early childhood in Wichita and attended South 
Riverside Elementary. He moved with his family to Derby and graduated 
from Derby Senior High School in 1961. At the age of 16, he started his 
printing career as an apprentice printer at the Derby News. During his remaining high school years A.J. worked after school for The Mulvane News.

A.J. met his wife, Karen Jean Barton on a blind date and they were 
married two years later on April 11, 1965 at the Conway Springs Church 
of the Brethren. They made their home in Conway Springs where they 
raised their family of five children.

At the age of 19, A.J. was employed as a Linotype operator and printer by R.H. Cline of the Conway Springs Star and The Argonia Argosy.
 After R.H. retired from the Star, he continued his employment with the 
Star for a total of 10 years. At the age of 23 he purchased The South Haven New Era newspaper during his continued employment at the Star. A.J. worked in the evenings to publish the South Haven New Era. He continued to publish it for over 50 years. In 1987, he established The Norwich News which he published for over 30 years.

In 1973, A.J. went into business for himself as A.J.’s Printing and 
purchased Dr. Eugene McCormick’s office building on Spring Avenue. In 
August 2002 he moved his printing shop to a new building at 215 S. 
Eighth in Conway Springs.

A.J. was a member of Conway Springs Chamber of Commerce and served on
 the Conway Springs Fire Dept. He served 16 years on the Conway Springs 
City Council. During his tenure, he served two years as President of the 
Council and 12 years as Mayor. As Mayor, A.J. focused on city 
improvements and infrastructure. &nbsp;

The City of Conway Springs honored and recognized A.J.’s service to 
the community by having him serve as the Fall Festival Parade Marshall 
in 2016.

A.J. was an active member in his church. He served as Cubmaster and 
Scoutmaster for 12 years. As Scoutmaster, he had five Eagle Scouts in 
his troop. These five young men also later served two-year church 
missions.

He has served nine years in the Wichita Kansas Stake Presidency and 
14 years as Branch President and Bishop of the Wellington Ward of The 
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For the past 15 years, A.J.
 has served as the patriarch for the Wichita Kansas Stake, ministering 
over 400 patriarchal blessings. The example he set for his family has 
generated 14 full-time missionaries, with many more to come. His son 
Greg served 2 years in Tacoma, Washington. Thirteen grandchildren have 
served or are serving missions:

A.J. was a talented artist. He created many paintings and drawings 
throughout his life. There have been many requests from family members 
for him to paint more. Just retire already and we will provide you with 
our requests. A.J. gifted a painting to each of his five children as 
wedding presents when they were married. He painted scenes from the 
community including the Spring House in Conway Springs, and a multitude 
of religious scenes, but his favorite were landscapes. I’m sure all of 
these pieces will create many spirited discussions in the near future as
 everyone tries to lay their claim to these precious memories.&nbsp;

A.J. and Karen loved to travel. They made countless trips to Utah for
 babies being born, priesthood ordinations, Eagle Scout ceremonies, 
mission farewells, holidays, and weddings. They were committed to being 
in their children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s lives 
regardless of the distance between them. For their 50th wedding 
anniversary, Mom, Dad and their children and spouses went on an Alaskan 
cruise.

Later in life, A.J. and Karen returned to Eureka Springs, Arkansas 
where they had honeymooned. Ultimately, they purchased a timeshare on 
TableRock Lake in Branson, Missouri. They wanted to create even more 
memories with their family. For the past 17 years, family has gathered 
at Big Cedar to go boating, fishing, swimming, miniature golfing, drink 
lots of hot chocolate, watch fireworks, tours of the fish hatchery, see a
 variety of shows in Branson, ride go-karts, and endless trips to Silver
 Dollar City. It also included lots of naps, but most of those were 
taken by Mom and Dad. For the past 12 years, Mom organized a family 
reunion every two years in Granby, Colorado. In the mountains, the 
family did lots of hiking, did water sports, rode ATVs on the mountain 
trails and always got ice cream in Grand Lake. Dad never missed a chance
 to eat ice cream. He would frequently tell the story of his first ice 
cream cone as a kid. He picked up glass bottles to recycle and get money
 to buy his first ice cream cone. It was so delicious, as soon as he 
finished eating it, he immediately returned to hunting for more bottles 
and bought a second ice cream cone later that day.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother John Bozarth and two sisters: Alta Bowman and Christine Ryno.

A.J. is survived by his wife Karen; his children: Deborah (John) 
McCurdy of Lindon, Utah; Gregory (Carmel) Bozarth of Ivins, Utah; Teresa
 (Phillip) Beehler of Spanish Fork, Utah; Lora (Michael) Bull of 
Monument, Colorado; Mechelle (Jason) Conrady of Wichita, Kansas; one 
sister Ernestine Turner of Wichita, Kansas; 23 grandchildren; 11 great 
grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends.

Cheers to endless ice cream cones in heaven. Thanks for the memories, Dad.

Merlin Potts, age 95 of Leonardville, passed away Monday, October 10, 2022 at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

He was born on February 15, 1927, the son of Gideon Franklin and Carrie Greta (Buss) Potts.

Mildred Almetta Fehlman, age 96, died October 10, 2022, at the Chapman Valley Manor, Chapman, KS.

 She was born October 24, 1925, to Albert and Selma (Sylvester) Nitsche in Riley, KS. Mildred spent her childhood in the Riley area.&nbsp; She graduated from Riley High School in 1943.&nbsp; Mildred worked on the family farm as well as helped take care of other family and children. She spent a small amount of time as a young woman working at the elevator. Mildred married Harold Fehlman on August 24, 1950. They made their home on Harold’s family homestead in Wakefield, where they stayed their entire marriage. Mildred was a member of the Wakefield United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, EHU, and the Priscilla Club.&nbsp; She spent many years as a 4-H and Project Leader. Her family received the Kansas 4-H family of the year award in 1984. Mildred was an avid quilter and enjoyed sewing and knitting. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister and brother-in-law, Alberta and Warren Hofmann; and a step-granddaughter, Alicia Fehlman.

Delmar Paul Curran, born March 28, 1932, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2022, surrounded by loved ones.

He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Rose Ella Strunk Curran, his son, Steve Curran (Jennifer), daughter Pam (Jack) Sims, 9 grandchildren (Jessi, Charlie, Jodi, Beth, John, Ted, Martha, Mattie, Julian), and 13 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by parents Bryan and Marie and siblings Robert, Harold, Dorothy, Marvin, Mary Lou, Duane, and Delores Curran.

Delmar was raised in the Buckeye Community and married Rose Ella in Abilene. He started working for Abilene Flour Mills during his high school years and then was transferred to Kansas City as a professional Miller for ADM Milling in 1972. After a 47-year career in Milling, he and Rosie retired back to Abilene. He achieved Emeritus status as a member of the Association of Operative Millers. After retirement he farmed for the Wilson Family Farm well into his 80’s.

Delmar and Rosie have been passionate supporters of the Abilene and Dickinson County Communities. He has served as President of Kiwanis, life-long member and a Trustee of the Elks organization, volunteered at the Abilene Hospital, sat on the Board at the Abilene Library, and has supported the Dickinson County Community Foundation since its inception.

Delmar had a calming presence, a welcoming personality and was instantly loved by everyone he met. His empathy for others held no bounds. He has touched all of our hearts and has left an imprint that will last forever on our souls.

Delmar’s family will have a casual, open house Celebration of Life from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 15, 2022 at the Elk’s Lodge in Abilene. Lavonne Kay Horchem, 91, died peacefully in her sleep Oct. 6, 2022, at Meadowlark Hills retirement community in Manhattan, Kansas. She was born Sept. 20, 1931, at home in Utica, Kansas, the daughter of Ephriam “Pete” Gerald and Martha Matilda (Schwindt) Bernbeck.

She graduated from Utica High School and Kansas State University.

She married Richard “Dick” Gayle Horchem Aug. 16, 1953, in the First Christian Church in Utica. They made their home in Ness City, Kansas, where they raised their three sons.

Lavonne Kay Horchem, 91, died peacefully in her sleep Oct. 6, 2022, at Meadowlark Hills retirement community in Manhattan, Kansas. Petros Levis joined the family as an exchange student from Greece during his senior year of high school. Petros and his wife, Ann, Denver, remain a part of the family. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Craig Horchem, and two brothers, Don Bernbeck and Gerald Bernbeck.Kay taught in the Ness City School District for many years.
