Mary Ann McClure (Zoeller), 92, of Alma, Kansas, passed away on October 3, 2024, at the Wamego Health Center, Wamego, Kansas.

&nbsp; Mary was born June 17, 1932, in Flush, Kansas, to parents Albinus Zoeller and Victoria (Weixelman) Zoeller. She married Paul “Bub” Dean McClure in Flush in 1953 and spent their lives together farming for 60 years until his death in 2013.

&nbsp; Mary is survived by daughters Becky McClure and Debora (Mike) Life, and a sister, Betty Lou Ridder.

&nbsp; Mary was preceded in death by her parents, son Rex Alan McClure, brother Eugene “Bud” Zoeller, and sister Jeannine Blakeley.

&nbsp; A private burial is scheduled at a future date. Arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego, KS.

&nbsp; Lisa Marconette of Chapman passed away October 11th, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. 

Lisa was born December 18, 1970 in Ottawa, Kansas, the daughter of Gary and Judy Porter. Lisa is survived by her Mother, and her partner Devin Houston and her brothers Jeffrey Porter and Brian Porter. She is also survived by her daughter Stephanie Foster, and Sons Stephen Winholz and Derreck Marconette.

Charlotte Brighton Herr, age 91, of Manhattan, KS passed away September 26, 2024 at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

After completing a BFA in Interior Design at the University of Kansas, Charlotte went to the Big Apple for a summer of study at the NY Institute of Interior Design. She returned to the Little Apple to work for 36 years with Brighton Home Furnishings as the third generation in the furniture business. Charlotte met her husband, Chuck Herr, at United Methodist Church of Manhattan and they were married in 1956. Together, they were partners in Brighton Home Furnishings and shared in a 54-year hobby of historic preservation with apartments and homes in Manhattan and Ogden. The store and apartments provided multiple generations of family members the opportunity to learn how to decorate, hang wallpaper and make drapes.

Charlotte and Chuck provided a home to more than just their family. They hosted several foreign students thru AFS, were involved for many years providing foster children a needed home, and mentored a graduate student while she completed a graduate Art degree at KSU. Charlotte’s long life in Manhattan, as well as being a local business owner, allowed her to share her talents with newcomers. And she knew everybody.

We remember Charlotte saying “what box” in approaching any creative project, whether it was personalized decorating projects for clients or designing her own quilts. Charlotte made her first quilt 64 years ago when pregnant with first daughter, very much an “in the box” hand quilted project. A second phase of quilting started when her girls were in high school and college. This began her “outside of the box” phase completing each project herself with an electric needle. The Konza Prairie Quilters’ Guild was dear to her; for many years Charlotte participated in their activities: teaching classes, serving as president, and sharing in the joy of fabric arts with others who loved it as much as she did. Any time Charlotte’s work was in a national show, Chuck made the arrangements to travel to the show. She was appreciative for the time, space, and equipment that made it possible to “do her thing” and create whatever she needed.

Charlotte was preceded in death by both parents, Don and Olga Brighton; brother, Jim Brighton; and her beloved Husband, Chuck Herr. She is survived by sisters, Mary Funk and Bobbie Trowbridge; brother, Tom Brighton; daughters, Conni Scherff and Claudia Herr; grandson, Riley Scherff; and nieces and nephews.

Elaine Rose (Pfannenstiel) Fulkerson was born on 8 April 1931, the eldest of eleven children. She had nine sisters and one brother. Elaine began life in Colorado and moved to Hays and other towns in Kansas during her childhood. She died on 11 October 2024, at age 93 years and six months.

Elaine is survived by her siblings: Marlene, Wilma (Joe), Carolyn, Norman (Glenda), Pauletta, and Romelda; her children, James (Laura), Deborah (Bill), and Katherine; 11 Grandchildren, 20 Great Grandchildren and 8 Great-Great Grandchildren. Elaine was predeceased by her sisters, Shirley Ann, Shirley Anna, Joan, and Aletha.

Elaine was married on 16 March 1951 at McCracken, Kansas to James Chester Fulkerson. He predeceased Elaine in 1996. She lived in Alaska, Germany, Kansas. Kentucky, Maryland, and Texas, and returned to Kansas after her husband retired from the military. She was a dedicated homemaker, gardener, and mother, and started her own cleaning business before transitioning into an independent grocery store demonstrator. She retired at age 86.&nbsp;&nbsp;Elaine was always active in crafting and became active in Crafty Seniors and remained a member for many years, until Covid forced them to disband.

Jacqueline (Jackie) Page Mershon passed away October 10, 2024 at the Home of the Flint Hills in St. George, Kansas.

Jacqueline (known as Jackie) was born November 24, 1935, in Oakley, Kansas, the daughter of Wesley and Luella Wolfe Page and was the oldest of four children. Jacqueline was a 1953 graduate of Oakley high where she participated in many school activities including band and plays. Upon graduation, Jackie was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Stormont Vail School of Nursing in Topeka, Kansas. She graduated in 1956 as a Register Nurse (RN).&nbsp;

While in nursing school, Jackie found the love of her life, Jerry L. Mershon (also from Oakley, KS) and they married in April of 1957. Jackie worked as a nurse in Topeka and supported her husband while he was attending Washburn Law School in Topeka. Jackie and Jerry moved to Manhattan, Kansas in 1961 where she spent the remainder of her life.

Jackie and Jerry had three children: Diane, Michelle, and Daniel. She was a caring, supportive wife and mother and always had encouraging words for her family. She was actively involved with her children’s activities serving as Brownie leader, Cub Scout Den mother, and several PTA committees.

Jackie had a long career as a working RN except for nine years when she stayed home with the children. While living in Manhattan, she worked at Memorial Hospital from 1961-1964. She worked at St Mary’s Hospital from 1973 to 1999 and retired at age 64.

Jackie graduated from Kansas State University in 1982 with a BS Life Science degree with secondary major in Gerontology with Magna Cum Laude honors.

She received the Heaton Scholarship Award for working women attending Kansas State University with 3.5 or better grade point average. She was also a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Scholastic Society, 1981.

She actively served on the board at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community, Riley County Historical Museum and the Colorado Christian Home for Children and Families. In addition, she was a member of the Manhattan Literature Club and the PEO Chapter IW. She took simple pleasures in many things, including a love for the outdoors and was a Docent for Konza Prairie Research Natural Area.

She loved God and was actively involved in the Methodist and First Christian church in Manhattan, Kansas.

She is survived by her husband Jerry Mershon, children Diane Mershon Heyman (husband Mark), Michelle Mershon Munster (husband Greg), Daniel Mershon; grandchildren Grant Heyman, Ryan Munster, Marissa Munster; siblings Harvey Page (wife Peggy), and Ronald Page (wife Debbi).

She was preceded in death by her sister Carolyn Page Theobald and her brother-in-law Noland Theobald.

The funeral will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, Kansas on Thursday, October 17,2024 at 11:00a.m., with Pastor Donna Voteau officiating. Interment will be held at 1:00p.m. Friday October 18 at the Oakley Cemetery in Oakley, Kansas

Cheryl “Sherri” Lynn Helzer, age 65, passed away on Monday, October 1, 2024, at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka, Kansas. She was born on July 23, 1959, to parents Kenneth and Margaret (Silva) Casey, Manhattan, Kansas.

Sherri grew up in Manhattan, KS, and graduated from Manhattan High School with the class of 1977. She later earned an associate's degree and has worked as an accounting manager throughout her life. On June 22, 1991, she married Jeff Helzer. Sherri loved spending time with her grandchildren and family. She enjoyed making mints for friend’s weddings, playing bingo, and making flower arrangements. She was a member of The Fraternal Order of the Eagles Women’s Auxiliary 830, Junction City, KS.

Survivors include her husband, Jeff, of Manhattan, KS; children Brandy Casey of Manhattan, KS, and Dallas Helzer of Krakow, Poland; stepchildren Anthony (Billie) Helzer and Virginia Helzer of Newton, KS; six grandchildren Benjamin Casey, Raevyn Sanders, Ryan Helzer, Nathan Helzer, Samuel Helzer, and Mikayla Helzer; and siblings Ron Casey, Sandy Steck, and Nancy Burk.

Sherri was preceded in death by both parents and her brother, Bill Casey.

John was born in Vancouver, Washington on February 14, 1946 to Charles and Jean Kelly. He is survived by his son Mike Kelly, sisters Pamela Schmidt, Jane Simms and Pat Small, nine nieces and nephews and twelve great nieces and nephews who will miss Uncle Butch.

John graduated from Junction City High School in 1964. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967 and was a veteran of the Viet Nam War.

John enjoyed a life on the road, spending most of his years driving a passenger bus or long-haul truck. He made his home in places from Kansas to Texas to Japan to Arizona and more in between. His wanderlust was a constant companion even in his final days when his favorite topic was the next vacation he was planning which included, of course, a boat and history. There are many ways to remember John. Some may picture him with a tanned left arm hanging out of an open window, hand on the mirror, humming along to whatever old country crackles through the am radio. “Now, that’s what I call music,” he’d say and grin. 

His nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews may have holiday reminders of his skill with a needle when they hang their intricately stitched holiday stockings. And God help you if you were his cashier at the local store where he would chat you up, a one-man queue creator. He was a man who, at the same time, longed for Americana and Fiji, human connection and solitude, and more fried potatoes and ice cream. Sometimes he got what he wanted (especially when it was mint chocolate chip). May he get it again. See you down the road, Butch.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; Erika G. Losonszky, 82, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on October 7, 2024, at Valley View Senior Life Center. Cremation has taken place and a private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Erika was born on December 21, 1941, in Berlin, Germany. She later traveled to the United States with her family. Being a military spouse allowed her to travel all around the United States. She was very proud of her naturalization to the United States of America.

Erika G. Losonszky

&nbsp; Mr. Jay Hassanzadeh was born on October 2nd, 1953 in Khorramshahr, Iran. He was the son of Abalgosm Hassanzadeh and Selemeh Nasseraldine. He was the eldest of six siblings. 

While in Iran, Jay was enlisted in the Imperial Guard of Iran, for nine years, as a tanker. He came to the United States in 1977 to further his education. Mr. Jay attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University and transferred to Texas A&amp;M where he completed his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree. He also graduated from Dunkin Donut University in 1993, to become the owner and operator of three Dunkin Donut franchises in San Antonio and Ft. Worth Texas. During that time, he met his beautiful wife, Belinda Juarez of San Antonio. They recently celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on August 30th.

In 1997, Jay moved to Junction City, Kansas, and opened Daylight Donuts on N. Washington St., where he served the community for twenty years. He was a kind-hearted and giving man who was adored by his customers and became a pillar in the community. Daylight Donuts was a cash-only establishment, and he would never refuse services to those who did not have cash. He trusted they would return to pay their tab, and they never broke his trust.

Mr. Jay was a dedicated husband and loving grandpa. His pride and joy were his grandchildren who meant the world to him. He loved watching sports with his boys, playing bingo, video chatting with his family, and yearly family vacations. He enjoyed watching Westerns, comedies, game shows and staying up with current events.

Mr. Jay is survived by his loving wife Belinda, and his children Kathryn, Mina, and Georgiane. Son-in-Laws Jason Mortimer, Meshach Casey, and Jason Boss. Grandsons, Andrew, Tristan, Craig, and Hudson. Granddaughters Madisan, Emma, Marley, Lachlynn, and newest granddaughter arriving in December! Mr. Jay had a loving relationship with his sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, and brother, whom he would talk to daily. Mr. Jay was predeceased by his parents, Abalgosm and Selemeh, his father-in-law, Albert Juarez, his sister Soheila, his sister-in-law Marylou, and his three-year-old grandson, Brady Mortimer.

&nbsp; Mr. Jay Hassanzadeh was born on October 2nd, 1953 in Khorramshahr, Iran. He was the son of Abalgosm Hassanzadeh and Selemeh Nasseraldine. He was the eldest of six siblings. While in Iran, Jay was enlisted in the Imperial Guard of Iran, for nine years, as a tanker. He came to the United States in 1977 to further his education. Mr. Jay attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University and transferred to Texas A&amp;M where he completed his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree. He also graduated from Dunkin Donut University in 1993, to become the owner and operator of three Dunkin Donut franchises in San Antonio and Ft. Worth Texas. During that time, he met his beautiful wife, Belinda Juarez of San Antonio. They recently celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on August 30th.In 1997, Jay moved to Junction City, Kansas, and opened Daylight Donuts on N. Washington St., where he served the community for twenty years. He was a kind-hearted and giving man who was adored by his customers and became a pillar in the community. Daylight Donuts was a cash-only establishment, and he would never refuse services to those who did not have cash. He trusted they would return to pay their tab, and they never broke his trust.Mr. Jay was a dedicated husband and loving grandpa. His pride and joy were his grandchildren who meant the world to him. He loved watching sports with his boys, playing bingo, video chatting with his family, and yearly family vacations. He enjoyed watching Westerns, comedies, game shows and staying up with current events.Mr. Jay is survived by his loving wife Belinda, and his children Kathryn, Mina, and Georgiane. Son-in-Laws Jason Mortimer, Meshach Casey, and Jason Boss. Grandsons, Andrew, Tristan, Craig, and Hudson. Granddaughters Madisan, Emma, Marley, Lachlynn, and newest granddaughter arriving in December! Mr. Jay had a loving relationship with his sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, and brother, whom he would talk to daily. &nbsp; Bernard E. (Snookie) Schroeder, 79, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away on October 4, 2024, at Chapman Valley Manor. He was born on June 27, 1945, to Nicholas and Burnice (Freeman) Schroeder in Dallas, Texas.

Bernard grew up and attended school in Junction City, Kansas. He attended auto transmission repair school in Dallas, Texas. He was a good mechanic, learning most of his skills from his father. He held various jobs throughout his adulthood, some to include working for Davey Tree Company and later becoming a supervisor for the company. This allowed him to travel all throughout Kansas.

He is survived by his son Chris (Staci) Schroeder of Junction City, Kansas; one sister, Peggy (Bud) Stupka of Colby, Kansas; two nieces, Lisa Olson of Atwood, Kansas and Denise Stupka of Colby, Kansas; two great-nephews, Taylor (Christy) Olson of Waynesville, Missouri and their children, Carter and Cohen, and Arie Olson of Kansas City, Missouri; one great-niece, Diahonia Olson of Atwood, Kansas.He is preceded by his parents. She was always pleasant to be with and enjoyed laughing.On April 15, 1996, she married Anthony Rosely in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died July 11, 2005.Survivors include one brother, Michael Schwark of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Sandra Pacell.

Bruce Hauser, the founder and frontman of Bruce Hauser and the Sawmill Creek Band, passed away peacefully at his home on October 12, 2023, at the age of 74 with his daughter by his side.&nbsp;

Born and raised at Ft. Riley, Junction City and Manhattan, Kansas, Bruce graduated high school in Junction City and attended K-State in Manhattan, Kansas and Sheridan College in Wyoming. Bruce’s love for music was evident from an early age, first learning to play the accordion as a kid and later becoming a master guitar and banjo player. He began singing and playing guitar in Manhattan – including a duet with friend Max Pfrang; in a band called The Stepping Stones in 1967 with Mike Lacer, Luis Acevedo, Ron, Mike Russ, and Bill Glenn; in a band that drove to gigs in a hearse; and playing a solo called “The Poor Boy” - but he longed to move to the mountain west. He started that journey in Colorado Springs in 1973 forming a band called Ironstone and then in early 1974, he formed Sawmill Creek in Wyoming. Bruce remained the constant in the band, including a brief stint as “Bruce and The Flamingos,” but the roster of members and studio musicians evolved over the decades – please see sawmillcreekband.com for all the amazing musicians Bruce has worked with.

Although based out of Jackson, Wyoming for nearly 3 decades and playing many gigs throughout the mountain west, Bruce Hauser and The Sawmill Creek Band also headlined all over the US, as well as tours throughout Europe. Sawmill Creek, which quickly became a cornerstone of the country music scene in the western states in the early 70’s, was renowned for Bruce's evocative storytelling, and good old ‘boot scootin’ fun.

The band garnered a devoted fanbase throughout the years, and many a night – in Jackson Hole at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, The Wort Hotel’s Silver Dollar Bar; in Cody at the Bronze Boot; in Casper at The Beacon; just to name a few - was packed to the gills in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s with Sawmill fans listening and dancing to their favorite band. Bruce’s mom (who was a house mother for the Acacia Fraternity in Manhattan), dad (who was in the army for 22 years and was stationed at Ft. Riley and later worked at Johnson Brother’s furniture in Junction City and owned a store called F.A.S.T. in Coffeyville), brother Mark (who graduated from Manhattan, attended K-State and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 39 years) and family often drove to see him play; daughter Shannan often spent weeks in the summer on the road with him and the band.

During his music career, Bruce wrote hundreds of original songs and published at least 8 albums. His songwriting, characterized by its lyrical depth and authenticity, touched on themes of love, loss, the beauty of Wyoming and the mountains and wilderness he loved so much. Bruce called it Rocky Mountain Music.

Under Bruce's leadership, the Sawmill Creek Band released a series of acclaimed albums and singles, including fan favorites like Wild Western Windblown Band, Barely Gettin' By, Cold Wyoming Snow and Grandma Shoes, a song about his maternal grandmother (born Eva Graham in Kansas in 1879) who wore the old-time lace up boots that fascinated him.

In 1981, "BARELY GETTIN' BY," broke into the top 100 on Billboard Magazine's Hot Country Singles Chart. In 1983, "SWINDLER OF FEELINGS" became a nationally charted single. CROSS COUNTRY was named one of the Top 10 Country Albums of the Year by Critic's Choice - Billboard Magazine in 1985. "I JUST CAME BACK" made it into the Billboard Top 100 charts and stayed there for six weeks, reaching No. 70 on the list. In 1986, "SOMETHIN' OLD FASHIONED" was named #6 Critic's Choice in Billboard Magazine with a review that stated: "The lyrics are exquisitely wrought and impeccably sung." Also in 1986, "BIDDING AMERICA GOODBYE" became a critically acclaimed, nationally charted Billboard Top 100 single.

At the start of his career, Bruce’s father-in-law was Gerald Roberts – a Twice All-Around World Champion Rodeo Cowboy. Each time Bruce would play a song, Gerald would say with a grin, “Don’t you know any good cowboy songs?” Bruce said of Gerald, “he was one of the finest men I’ve ever known” and he promptly started expanding his playlist to include country. In the late 60s in Strong City, Kansas, at the Flint Hills Rodeo, Gerald’s sister-in-law, Jo Roberts (who was married to 3-time bull riding champion Ken Roberts), taught Bruce one of his first country songs – The Long Black Veil. Later in his career, Bruce wrote a song called “Echo of an Old Man’s Last Ride” that was in part about his rodeo cowboy father-in-law, and in part about his friend and backcountry guide, Rod Doty.

During his long career, Bruce saw the evolution of music formats from vinyl to 8-track tapes to cassettes to CDs and now streaming, and he has released music on every version! After being on the road for the better part of 3 decades, Bruce longed for a stationary home life. He began working in the RV industry in Oregon and The Coachella Valley and once again, made lasting friendships. In the last 20 years, Bruce played occasional gigs in Wyoming and Montana. Daughter Shannan would often accompany him, staying in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks between shows. The last time Bruce performed on stage was 9/11/22 at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson Hole with many of his musician friends for a Celebration of Life for his late wife, Linda "Bubbles" Willis Hauser.

Beyond his musical achievements, Bruce was a very sentimental, spiritual, kind and funny soul. He had an inherently quick-witted sense of humor and a knack for "thinking outside the box,” which lent itself well to becoming a singer/songwriter. A treasured guitar was always at his fingertips, and he often wrote lyrics down for later creative writing sessions. Not surprisingly, he was a Scrabble-loving, crossword puzzle guru.

He had a taste for the finer things in life and was a meticulous "doer" who was always working on upgrading, cleaning, or creating something. He kept his house in tip-top shape and would spend an entire day washing every window inside and out after one smudge on a window got him going. He was a truck guy through and through. His first truck was a ‘30 Model A. He got a loan at age 13 for $75 and had to put it together. He recently had a '67 Chevy that he restored and a 2020 model that he "souped" up to the hilt.

Bruce was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed back-country camping, whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, and scuba diving. He was a gentle soul and an animal lover who always had a cherished dog by his side.

He married Kasey Dawn Roberts in 1968 and had a daughter Shannan. He married Linda “Bubbles” Willis in Jackson, Wyoming in 1981. “Bubbles” traveled with Bruce and the band and became a fixture in the band’s history. Bruce spent the last two decades taking excellent care of his ailing Bubbles after she had cancer in 1998 and then several strokes.

Later in life, Bruce discovered that his biological father was Martin McGuire, and this unlocked a treasure-trove of new Irish relatives and the discovery that Martin and many others in the family were also musically and artistically inclined.

&nbsp; Richard (Dick) Alvin Millner passed away at the age of 82 on September 28, 2024 in Abilene, KS. He was born to Alvin and Dorothy Millner on March 4, 1942 in San Antonio, TX. Richard graduated from W.B. Ray High School in 1960. He worked on the oil rigs in South Texas and had various retail jobs in his younger years before moving to Abilene, KS in 1975 to work for Duckwall, Alco as an electronics buyer. He retired in 2000 to pursue his hobbies of golﬁng, riding his motorcycle, and working in his woodshop. Richard was also an avid reader, enjoying westerns and many other genres.

Richard married Lynda Millican in 1961 and to that union three children, Adam, Jill and David were born. On October 6, 1990 Richard married Marita Horan McAsey and he gained three more daughters, Camille, Tamara and Jennifer.

Richard had many hobbies and interests, but he enjoyed family most of all. He was proud of all of his children and grandchildren, their spouses and his great grandchildren. He loved family traditions and instilled that love in his family who will continue to honor those traditions in their own lives. His stories of growing up in South Texas were enjoyed by his children and grandchildren, and those stories are sure to be re-told for generations to come.

He is survived by his wife, Marita Millner; children Camille (Russell) Wheeler, Tamara (Ron) Leard, Jill Millner (Steve) Lang, Jennifer (Brady) Showalter, and David Millner; Brother Bill Millner. &nbsp; Richard (Dick) Alvin Millner passed away at the age of 82 on September 28, 2024 in Abilene, KS. He was born to Alvin and Dorothy Millner on March 4, 1942 in San Antonio, TX. Richard graduated from W.B. Ray High School in 1960. He worked on the oil rigs in South Texas and had various retail jobs in his younger years before moving to Abilene, KS in 1975 to work for Duckwall, Alco as an electronics buyer. He retired in 2000 to pursue his hobbies of golﬁng, riding his motorcycle, and working in his woodshop. Richard was also an avid reader, enjoying westerns and many other genres.Richard married Lynda Millican in 1961 and to that union three children, Adam, Jill and David were born. On October 6, 1990 Richard married Marita Horan McAsey and he gained three more daughters, Camille, Tamara and Jennifer.Richard had many hobbies and interests, but he enjoyed family most of all. He was proud of all of his children and grandchildren, their spouses and his great grandchildren. He loved family traditions and instilled that love in his family who will continue to honor those traditions in their own lives. His stories of growing up in South Texas were enjoyed by his children and grandchildren, and those stories are sure to be re-told for generations to come.Richard was preceded in death by his parents, son Adam Millner and grandson River Wilson Millner. Shirley Mae (Miller) Williams, age 94, of Manhattan, KS, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving children on September 26th, 2024, at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan. Beloved Mother to her four children: Debi (John) Hensley of Overland Park, KS; Scott Williams of Topeka, KS; Shari (Jim) Hoy of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Steve (Ann) Williams of Manhattan, KS. Passing on her kind and loving spirit to her 8 grandchildren known to them as Gram/Grammy: Michael Williams, Adam (Helen) Hensley, Lauren (Greg) Jarrell, Whitney Rashid, Bryce Williams, Ryan Williams, Evan Williams, and Lily (Jason) Hoy-Cohen. Her warm hugs will be missed and always remembered by her 8 great grandchildren: Jack and Emma Hensley, Olivia and Miller Jarrell, Mia and Elliot Rashid, and Kai and Cade Cohen. They will carry on the legacy of love for their sweet GiGi. Together we all rejoice in her 94 years of loving and caring. Shirley was born May 5th, 1930, in Winside, Nebraska. Her parents moved to Norfolk, Nebraska when she was around 2 yrs old. She was a lifelong Lutheran who began her education at Christ Lutheran School. Her German Grandmother and Mother taught her the fine art of baking which became a passion of Shirley’s. Her four children have yummy memories of all of the cookies, pastries, and donuts she made year-round for family and friends, but especially the assortment at Christmas time.

Faith and food were our Mother’s LOVE Language which her family and friends were so grateful to be the recipients of. Her children credit her for teaching them the power of prayer. Our mother always began and ended every meal with prayer, and you did not go to bed without saying your prayers. As we grew into adults and left home, whenever you talked to her on the phone, her last words were, do not forget your prayers.

One of Shirleys passions was playing the Piano and singing and we were all entertained by her at the piano playing Clair de Lune up until even just a few years ago. Shirley graduated from Norfolk High School and then attended Norfolk Junior College where she graduated in 1950 with an Associate degree in Education. She enjoyed singing with a “Madrigal group” that toured in a number of cities in Nebraska and taught for 6 months in Cambridge, NE before moving back to Norfolk and marrying her sweetheart, Jim Williams. She then taught at the same school she attended as a child, Christ Lutheran School. Shirley and Jim started their family growing to four and eventually moving to Dodge City, Kansas until 3 of the four left for College (Kansas State University). When the last of three left KSU, Mom, Dad and Steve moved to Manhattan in 1977. They were very involved in the community, St. Lukes Lutheran Church, and Children’s Christian Concern Society. July 1999 Mom was awarded a certificate in recognition of her service in the government as she did civil service testing for government jobs. She became a Certified Volunteer Long-Term Care Ombudsman by the Kansas Department on Aging 8.27.97 at the age of 67.

Despite the challenges of raising 4 children, Mom always made time for bridge. Dad was her favorite bridge partner, and they played in many clubs. We think this passion was a close one right behind baking.

There are simply no words to describe the happiness and love our mom exuded. As diﬃcult as it is to watch your dear Mother with dementia, she never lost her happy spirit. As one family member put it, she would light up when we walked in the room and her laugh and loving smile made you feel her love and joy instantly. Even when she struggled with words, she never lost the ability to pray.

The last 5 years of her life were at The Honstead House at Meadowlark where our father also spent the last part of his life. Our Mother and her family were so blessed by the tender love and care everyone gave our mom.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents Elsie Frieda (Riggert) Miller, and Winfred Augustav Miller, brother Wallace “Wally” Miller and loving husband and bridge partner, James Hollingsworth “Jim” Williams of 66 years.

Kristine Fletcher, known to most as Kris, was born in Mississauga, Ontario on February 15, 1965 to her loving parents Jack Fletcher and Patricia O’Donoghue. Kris was the youngest of her four sisters Sharon, Lynda, and Jacquie, who she loved dearly.

After graduating from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, Kris pursued a career in optometry, which moved her to Houston, Texas. There she met her life partner, husband, and the love of her life Rick Schroeder.

Kris and Rick were married in Brantford, Ontario, the town where she was raised on March 27, 1993. They moved to Manhattan, Kansas, where they began their careers as optometrists and started their family.

Kris was an accomplished optometrist who cared deeply for her patients, and whose patients cared (if possible, even more) deeply for her. She spent her career working part time so she could spend her time with what she cared most about–her family.

Kris was a devoted mother who put her family above all. She was the mother of three children, Alaina, Jackson, and Cooper, who she loved immensely. Kris also loved creating a home. She made her home warm and inviting to all, especially to her family. She was a talented baker, avid reader, Kansas sports fan, and had an incredible eye for fashion and interior design.

In the spring of 2023, Kris was given the unforeseen diagnosis of lung cancer. She bravely fought this impossible new reality alongside her family with extreme strength, grace, and dignity. On September 26, 2024, Kris passed away with her family by her side. She left behind a room without pain, filled only with love. She will be so profoundly missed.

Memorial services will be held in her honor on October 11, 2024 at 2:00p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Avenue. Manhattan, Kansas 66502.

Rex Roland Boatman, 89, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 25th in his home.

Rex was born in Norton, Kansas on October 14th, 1934, the youngest child of nine of the late George Finn, Sr. and Flora (Armstrong) Finn. He and his older sister, the late June Maaske, were then adopted by the late Dewey and Wilma (Wills) Boatman. Growing up on the family farm in Logan County, Kansas, Rex reported that he dutifully did his chores before breakfast each morning before “walking to school uphill both ways,” which is how he developed his lifelong love and respect for farming, the great outdoors, and wildlife conservation.

After graduating from high school, Rex enrolled at Kansas State University to study education, but often went back home to help out on the farm. On one of those occasions, he met his eventual wife of 69 years, Coralie (Castle) Boatman. As described by their close friends, they were immediately the “it” couple of the town, and after a year of dating, married on August 28th, 1955.

Rex graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Education, and began teaching at Lee Elementary School in Manhattan, Kansas while finishing his Masters of Science in Education a few years later. As a teacher and principal for USD 383 for almost 40 years, Rex touched the lives of thousands of students, working at every elementary school in Manhattan with the exception of Northview and Marlatt. His career was made a full circle when he retired in 1993 where he began, at Lee Elementary School.

But Rex’s influence on kids didn’t stop with the school bell — he and Coralie had two of their own, Rene and Rick. As a father, Rex loved spending time passing on his outdoorsman skills and hard work ethic to the two, taking them fishing and hunting, teaching them gun safety, and showing them which tool was right for the job — and, those tools better be cleaned properly and put back in their rightful home. :)

After retirement, Rex dedicated himself to charity work, ramping up his time volunteering for Masonic Lafayette Lodge 16, the Scottish Rite, and the Shriners. He was also a member of the Riley County Fish and Game Association, the Kansas Wildlife Federation, and was a Staff Sergeant Medic E6 in the Kansas National Guard.

Those closest to him, who called him Rexy, will always remember him saying “I think it's tea-time”, his insatiable love of fruit jelly on both things that should and should not have jelly on them, and as a tenacious reader with an encyclopedic brain who would become obsessed with random subjects like native prairie grasses or Smith &amp; Wesson revolvers, read absolutely every book about it he could get his hands on from the public library, then ask you to coffee to tell you all about it.

His grandchildren, who called him Pop, will always remember him slipping them mini snickers from the secret can downstairs, overseeing them as they “picked the pinkies” from the backyard, his Rex-isms while playing Pitch after Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, his terrible luck with spyware on laptops, and ringing the doorbell like clockwork during the middle of nap time to check on something random like where the cast iron skillet was for his annual Fourth of July Chuckwagon Breakfast.

Rex is survived by his wife, Coralie of the home and children Rene Boatman (Ziad Dalaimi) of Lawrenceville, New Jersey and Rick Boatman (Theresa Boatman) of Manhattan, Kansas. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Erica Boatman of Florence, Italy; Maggie Reed of Watertown, New York; Sara Boatman of Manhattan, Kansas; and Emily Boatman of Kansas City, Missouri; as well as three great grandchildren: Liam Reed, Aiden Reed, and Emilia Reed. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Wilma Boatman, and his sister, June Maaske.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 4th at 10:30 am at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with Reverend Margaret McGhee, followed by a reception with refreshments in the church basement hall.

Rex Roland Boatman

Jimmie (Jim) Dean Cranford, 90, Manhattan, Kansas, died peacefully September 25, 2024, at Via Christi Village in Manhattan, Kansas.

Born in Pleasant Hills, Oklahoma, February 15, 1934, to Early and Gertrude (Elliot) Cranford, Jim was the youngest of twelve children. Later, due to hardships in the family, he lived with a few of his older siblings and graduated from Roff High School, Roff, Oklahoma in 1951 where he excelled in sports, especially basketball and baseball. After graduation, he attended the Santa Fe Railroad School in Pueblo, Colorado. His first railroad job was as an agent at the depot in Holly, Colorado.

On February 15, 1954, he married Altha Rae Davis and was drafted one month later by the United States Army to serve as a radio operator in Germany for two years (1954-1956). After Jim's return, he worked again as a depot agent for the Santa Fe Railroad in small towns across southeast Colorado and southwest Kansas until he retired in 1986.

Jim and Altha were blessed with three boys, Curt (1957), David (1958) and Greg (1960). Jim enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball, Babe Ruth Baseball, and American Legion Baseball as the boys grew up. He also spent his time renovating old homes, going to auctions, fishing, square dancing, and watching his sons participate in a variety of sports.

In 2006, Jim and Altha moved to Manhattan, Kansas, to be closer to some of the family. They attended Westview Community Church and volunteered in the nursery. He loved spending time with his seven grandkids and ten great grandkids. Later, in 2013, Jim suffered a debilitating stroke. Jim is survived by his wife, Altha; son Curt (Amy), Tomball, Texas; son David (Alva), Carrollton, Texas; and son Greg (Donna), Manhattan, Kansas; grandchildren Ed (Katie) Cranford, Jesse Cranford, Bryan (Tori) Cranford, Meg (Forest Amos) Cranford, Kirsten (Kris) Morrison, Kelsey (Zach) Anderson, and Courtney (Ki) Shield; great grandchildren Elizabeth and Faith Cranford, Rilynn, Declan, and Rosalyn Cranford, Ryleigh, Quinn, and Eliza Morrison, and Calum and Ellis Anderson.

Jimmie (Jim) Dean Cranford, 90, Manhattan, Kansas, died peacefully September 25, 2024, at Via Christi Village in Manhattan, Kansas.Born in Pleasant Hills, Oklahoma, February 15, 1934, to Early and Gertrude (Elliot) Cranford, Jim was the youngest of twelve children. Later, due to hardships in the family, he lived with a few of his older siblings and graduated from Roff High School, Roff, Oklahoma in 1951 where he excelled in sports, especially basketball and baseball. After graduation, he attended the Santa Fe Railroad School in Pueblo, Colorado. His first railroad job was as an agent at the depot in Holly, Colorado.On February 15, 1954, he married Altha Rae Davis and was drafted one month later by the United States Army to serve as a radio operator in Germany for two years (1954-1956). After Jim's return, he worked again as a depot agent for the Santa Fe Railroad in small towns across southeast Colorado and southwest Kansas until he retired in 1986.Jim and Altha were blessed with three boys, Curt (1957), David (1958) and Greg (1960). Jim enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball, Babe Ruth Baseball, and American Legion Baseball as the boys grew up. He also spent his time renovating old homes, going to auctions, fishing, square dancing, and watching his sons participate in a variety of sports.In 2006, Jim and Altha moved to Manhattan, Kansas, to be closer to some of the family. They attended Westview Community Church and volunteered in the nursery. He loved spending time with his seven grandkids and ten great grandkids. Later, in 2013, Jim suffered a debilitating stroke. &nbsp; Debra "Debbie" L. Hogan, 57, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on Monday, September 23, 2024 at her home in Junction City surrounded by her loving family. Cremation will take place. A memorial service is pending at First Baptist Church with Pastor Doug Brown officiating.

Debbie was born April 24, 1967, in Junction City, Kansas the daughter of Joyce Gappa. Debbie spent many years living in Amarillo, Texas. In Amarillo, she worked at a waitress for Cattleman's Restaurant. She also worked as a Certified Nurses Aide. Debbie also was the head of maintenance and housekeeping for a long term care facility in St. Joe, Texas where she lived before she moved back to Junction City, Kansas.

On July 17, 1985, she married John Hogan in Amarillo, Texas. Debra is survived by her husband John; two daughters, Amber Hogan of Maricopa, Arizona and Ashley Hogan of Junction City, Kansas; four sisters, Caren Tumlin, Linda Walker, Bonnie Moore and Pamela Clayton; six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother; one brother, Mitchell Johnson; one sister, Joyce Harley; one daughter, Amanda Hogan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; SFC (Ret.) Paul C. Wagner, 68, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on September 24, 2024, at Valley View Senior Life Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 16, 1955, to Spaniard Jr., and Betty (Cravens) Butler in Kansas City, Missouri. 

While growing up in Arkansas, he worked on his father's farm during the summers. This taught him the importance of hard work which he carried throughout his life. Paul graduated from High School in the year 1977. Immediately after graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in many military conflicts throughout his enlistment. He served his country honorably up to his retirement in 1994. Full military honors will be rendered during his graveside service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery.

Into retirement, Paul enjoyed spending his time in nature. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. Paul made sure to teach the importance of nature to his family by taking them fishing and camping while they were growing up. 

Paul was a provider and a protector of his family and friends. He is survived by his three children, DaTanya Wagner of Kansas City, Missouri, Paul Wagner of Kansas City, Missouri, and Monica Wagner-Walker; twelve grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two dogs, Nino and Doodlebug and a host of other loving family and friends. Paul was preceded in death by his loving parents; his wife, Debara; several siblings and one grandchild, Kaleel Wagner.

A graveside service will take place at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery on Thursday, October 3, 2024, from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. with full military honors.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; Kiola Marie Ryks (née Kell), 70, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2024, in Olathe, Kansas. Born on March 2, 1954, in Fort Riley, Kansas, Kiola spent her early years moving around a bit. Some of the places she lived as a child included Aschaffenburg, Germany; Ft Polk, LA; Fort Ord, CA; Baumholder, Germany; Fort Benning, GA and back to Fort Riley, KS. She graduated from Junction City High School in 1972.

Kiola's career was diverse and community-centered, reflecting her multifaceted skills and interests. She held various positions at Kaw and Colonial theaters in Junction City, where her love for the arts was evident. Her meticulous nature shone at McCall Pattern Company in Manhattan, KS, where she worked in pattern cutting. Her technical skills were further applied at Electrowire in Junction City, assembling wiring harnesses, and at Mobile Traveler, also in Junction City, where she crafted cabinets and later managed payroll and accounting. Her career also included roles at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service in Fort Riley, Russell Stovers Chocolates in Abilene, Bell Taxi in Junction City, and finally at Farmer's Insurance in Olathe, KS, where she worked as a claims adjuster.

Kiola was a kind-hearted and gentle soul who always looked for the positive in every situation. Described as sweet and kind, she was fiercely protective of her family, embodying the spirit of a 'mama bear' when it came to their safety. An animal lover at heart, Kiola especially had a soft spot for dogs, loving every one she met. Her warm, loving nature extended beyond her immediate family to her friends and community members.

Kiola is survived by her devoted husband, Larry Ryks; sons, John (Christi) Vickers, Joey Vickers, and Kevin (Krystal) Vickers; stepchildren, David (Carina) Ryks and Mary Ryks; brothers, Dennis (Linda) Taylor and Donald (Vickie) Kell; sisters, Terry (Jeff) Hill and Tami Barnes; brothers-in-law Verlin, Dewey and Kelly Ryks; sister-in-law Janelle Ryks; uncle, Roy Glessner Jr.; 19 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald E Kell and Betty Jean Kell; daughter, Leslie Fargo; grandson, Liam O'Brien; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

&nbsp; Phyllis Irene Kolling, age 95, of Chapman Kansas, passed away at Countryside, Abilene Kansas, September 15, 2024.

Phyllis was born on June 2, 1929, to Loren and Esther (Buhrer) Long at the family farm in rural Chapman. She attended Prairie Cottage Grade School. Phyllis then attended Dickinson County Community High School, graduating in 1947.On October 10, 1948, she married Henry Kolling. They had three children, Gary, Joleen, and Jana. They lived in the Upland and Chapman communities and farmed. Besides her work on the family farm, Phyllis worked at the Chapman State Bank and Kolling Pharmacy.

Phyllis enjoyed cooking and baking, sewing, and gardening; also playing bridge, pitch, rummy, dominoes and RACKO, with friends and family. Her skills with arts and crafts brought joy to those around her. She prepared crafts for the Bethany Church Bible School, Sunday School, and at the Chapman library. Her grandchildren always had a fun craft project to accomplish. She attended Sherman and Lakeside EHUs for most of her adult life, serving as an officer, committee member, and friend. 

Phyllis and Hank belonged to Buttons and Bows Square Dance group and Dickinson County Rural Life. They were active members of Bethany Church during their married life. Survivors include son Gary Kolling (Devra), rural Chapman; daughters Joleen Marsteller (Tom), Carmel, Indiana, and Jana McCandless (Kevin), Nesbit, Mississippi. Grandchildren are Cherilyn Hultz (Jason), Doug Marsteller (Nicole), Jackie Thompson (Scott), Anna Barth (Andy), Justin McCandless (Jan), Kai Glauber (Laura), Crystal Kolling (Maria), Kirstie Frey (David), and many loving great grandchildren. Other family survivors are sisters-in-law Edna Long, Linda Long, Dorothy Holsted, Shirley Owens, and many nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was preceded in death by loving husband Hank of 69 years, parents Loren and Esther Long, her two brothers, Max and Leland Long. Also, in-laws William and Effie Kolling, sister-in-law Emma Welborn, brothers-in-law Robert Kolling, AC Holsted, Sam Welborn, and George Owens preceded her in death.

Visitation will be held, 6:00-7:30 P.M., Thursday, September 19, 2024 at the Londeen-Overlease Funeral home in Chapman KS. WillieJean Rickenbaker, age 67, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House, Manhattan, Ks, after a battle with cancer. She was born on December 1, 1956, to William M. and Phyllis R. Ward, Beaufort, South Carolina.

WillieJean and her husband, Leonard, have resided in Manhattan for over 25 years. WillieJean was a clerk at the Menards Hardware store here in Manhattan.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard; daughter, Brandy Kay Oliver; step-kids, Rachel Rickenbaker and Mark Rickenbaker; grandchildren, Grady and Cheyanne; great-grandchildren, Aurora and Damian; and her siblings, Gail Tisdale, Debbie Zeigler, Charlene Witlock and Tony Wheeler, Charleston, SC.
