Clayton Lyle Zook, 79, passed on to his eternal home July 21, 2022. The oldest of six children, Lyle was born to Clyde and Mabel (Lenhert) Zook in Abilene Kansas on March 16, 1943. He grew up in Dickinson County where he always lived on a farm and learned to work at a very young age. He was plowing by age six and, with the sheriff’s approval, hauled his first load of wheat at age eleven. In upper grade school through high school he was also a part of the family turkey and cattle businesses. Lyle began his education in Moonlight’s one room school. He also attended schools in Detroit, Talmage, and Chapman, completing high school in 1961. He started driving a school bus when he was a freshman. Always having a tender heart towards the Lord, Lyle understood the plan of salvation and gave his heart and life to Jesus at a young age. He endeavored to live a dedicated Godly life for his savior. A life-long member of the Brethren in Christ Church, he spent two years of alternate service at the Life Line Mission in San Francisco. In this capacity he picked up donations, gave mission guests tours, helped to prepare and serve up to 100 meals each evening and served as bouncer for the evening service. He also transported youth and was greatly involved in ministry to them. Lyle was also called upon to do numerous maintenance jobs at two mission sites. It was in this capacity that he met the love of his life. He and Molly Ann Pool were married December 4, 1964. In 1966 Lyle returned with his bride to Kansas to farm and raise turkeys in partnership with his father. That same year they became the parents of Karen Joy. Two years later son Kenneth John joined the family on Christmas day. From 1973 until 2009 he, with Molly, were foster parents to over 120 children - some for a day, but most for months to years. Regardless of the time spent in their home, each child was important and loved. Lyle is preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Mabel Zook, great grandson Harding Shumate, and brother-in-law Ron Garver. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Molly, as well as his children Karen (Mike) Corl and Kenneth (Ronda) Zook; Grandchildren, Jeffrey Zook, Allie Zook, Jason Zook, Andrea (Darrin) Shumate, Janessa Zook, Levi Zook, Andrew Corl (David), Aaron (Jesse) Corl, Anna (J.T.) Brantley, Abigail Corl; and great grandchildren Hadlee Shumate, J.L. and Allyssa Brantley; Brothers Verle (Katy), Marlin (Connie), and Leon (Bette) Zook, sisters Lavina Garver and Susan (Duane) Schiffbauer, one aunt Lola Zook, numerous cousins and their spouses, and the many foster children he loved dearly. A memorial service to celebrate Lyle’s homecoming will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday July 29 at the Abilene Brethren in Christ Church with pastors Dale Engle and Stan Norman officiating. Burial will follow at the Abilene City Cemetery. Ruth Eleanore Murtonen, or ‘Auntie Ruthie’ to the family, will be fondly remembered as a generous soul with a quiet nature and a ready smile. The call of "Auntie Ruthie, Auntie Ruthie's here!" would resound through our house akin to the coming of Santa Claus; she rarely arrived emptyhanded, always bringing thoughtful presents or treats of some sort. One favorite memory was, upon arrival, taking out a nephew and asking what he wanted to do, his response being: "Let's get something to eat!" (this nephew returned exceptionally well-fed). How precious our lives have been to know and love Auntie Ruthie. Her own life began at the Hancock family home, in Michigan. It was February 4th, 1936, on what was bound to be a very cold day in Copper Country. In fact, it remains the coldest February on record - an average temperature of 25.2F – and perhaps the reason why she cultivated such a warm heart. Indeed, a remarkable generosity of spirit followed her through Hancock Central High School, and through to Highland Park, where she embarked on what would become a lifelong career in nursing. She worked with multiple hospitals before, in 1966, listening to the wise advice of her younger sister, Elizabeth, and so followed her into the U.S. Army. Their parents were so proud having two daughters serving our wonderful country. You may never know, when speaking to such a humble person, that she was the recipient of the National Defense Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal with OLC, Army Service Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars. Army service would take her all over the world, from Korea to Germany, sparking a love of travel. She even served a tour in Vietnam, where she spent her time literally saving lives. With characteristic humility, she was never the one to make mention of this either! Ever committed to service, in 1975, she obtained a B.S. in Nursing at Loretto Heights College, Denver, Colorado. She would continue to share her experience, and uniquely calm compassion, as a nurse in at Memorial hospital and Via Christi, Manhattan. When she eventually retired, it was jointly as a Lt. Colonel and Chief Nurse at Irwin AH, Fort Riley, Kansas. She had decided that, of all the places she visited, the affectionate community of the little apple in Manhattan, Kansas, would be her home for the remaining twenty-eight years of her life. The Kansas community would become an extension of her family. Auntie Ruthie was known to especially enjoy the monthly lunches with the local retired army nurses. She made so many wonderful friends, the list would be too long to mention. Everyone benefitted from her presence, and additionally the unique eye for finding the best deals on quality items; there was never a person more willing to shop with you until you drop! The family wishes to extend our thanks to said community for rallying to support us when we finally lost Auntie Ruthie. Ruth passed away on July 21, 2022, at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community, Manhattan. She is preceded in death by: her loving parents, Leonard Nikolai Murtonen and Saima Sanella Murtonen (née Salminen); as well as her older sister, Delores Mae Ort. Connie C. Toburen Stout of Manhattan died Monday, November 8, 2021 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House. She was 87. Connie was born on March 29, 1934 in Junction City, the daughter of Edgar C. and Orpah C. (Henning) Toburen. She grew up in Manhattan and graduated with the class of 52' from Manhattan High School. Following graduation, she worked at Farm Bureau until 1956. At that time, she joined the Marines, serving until her Honorable Discharge in 1957. She married Greg Stout in Conway, South Carolina in 1957; they divorced in 1970. She then worked as a Policy Service Audit Clerk at Farm Bureau until her retirement in 1996. Her co-harts spoke of her cheerful willingness to help them when asked. While in high school Connie played violin with the orchestra and the baritone in band. She loved sports and earned her letter sweater. Her interest in playing games continued as she and her many friends met to play cards and other games in their leisure time. She also liked doing cross-stitch and other decorative sewing, leaving many treasured mementos for her family. At holidays family and friends looked forward to her famous delectable peanut brittle candy. She served on several committees and boards, such as the Area on Aging, and was a member of the First Christian Church. She was very proud of her family! Connie's friends and family will remember her for her laughter and the fun she shared in spite of enduring painful physical issues. She was most proud of her family. She is survived by her children, Mike Stout of Kansas City, MO, and Sandy Chard (Dennis) of Bella Vista, AR; her sister, Sharon T. Smith (Kent) of Manhattan, and her half-sister, Jean Ekberg of Virginia Beach, VA; her grandchildren: Tyler Stout (his companion, Myriam), Jacob Chard (Susan), and Teara Short (Jason), also 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dolorese Beavers, 86, of McFarland, KS passed away surrounded by her family on July 17, 2022. Dolie was born in Bayard, NE September 4, 1935, to Stephen Richardson and Cora Shoemaker. To say that Dolie will be missed is inadequate. Her presence as the matriarch of the family will leave an absence that will only be filled with the memories, she created with all those that knew and loved her.

Dolorese [Dolie] Richardson Beavers began her life in McFarland, KS as a child. She attended McFarland grade school and attended Alma High School. She was an avid softball player and spent most of her youth causing a ruckus with her 8 siblings. She loved cooking and being a Sunday school teacher. She was known as the coupon queen. She worked for the State of Kansas for the elderly for 15 years. She attended Mill Creek Baptist Church and was a founding member. Her love for Jesus was only matched by her love for her family. Everyone was welcomed at Dolie’s house. Her loyalty to family and friends was unmatched. You made sure to grab your no-bake cookie when you went to grandma’s house.

Jackson T Beavers married up on January 14, 1956, and they were married for 52 years. She’s the proud mother of John Thomas, Connie Rae, Freddy David, and Dorothy Schooler. Her favorite role in life was being a wife, mother, grandmother, and Gigi.

She’s preceded in death by her parents Stephen Richardson and Cora Shoemaker, her husband Jackson Beavers, her son John Thomas Beavers, and her siblings Charlotte Meseke, Steve Richardson, Hal Richardson, John (Jack) Richardson, Robert Richardson, Rosemary Hamilton, and Little Mildred.

Dolorese Beavers

John Nicholas Kaus was born May 20, 1940, on the Kaus farm by Selden, KS
 to Nick Kaus and Mary (Kamphaus) Kaus. He passed away July 21, 2022, at
 his home in Seguin at the age of eighty-two. He graduated from the 
eighth grade while he was farming for his dad. He joined the Army on 
February 15, 1961 and served as a Specialist E4 at Fort Leonard Wood, 
Missouri for 2 years. 

When he returned home, he met and married Marilyn 
Joyce Ramsey on May 16, 1964, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in 
Colby, KS. The couple began their married life together on the Kaus farm 
where John continued farming and raising sheep, which he loved. To this 
union were born five children: John, Margaret, Juanita, Marvin, and 
Nicholas.
 John never met a stranger and treated everyone like a neighbor. 
Whether he was shearing sheep or attending a kid’s ballgame, he would 
strike up a conversation and make one walk away feeling like they had 
made a new friend. John sheared sheep in Kansas and Nebraska. The 
highlight of his life was helping to shear 4-H lambs for the county 
fairs across Kansas. John had a passion for his family. Some of the 
family’s best memories are fishing at Sheridan County Lake and Norton 
Lake and attending county fairs as John loved to see the livestock and

 </figure>John Nicholas Kaus was born May 20, 1940, on the Kaus farm by Selden, KS
 to Nick Kaus and Mary (Kamphaus) Kaus. He passed away July 21, 2022, at
 his home in Seguin at the age of eighty-two. He graduated from the 
eighth grade while he was farming for his dad. He joined the Army on 
February 15, 1961 and served as a Specialist E4 at Fort Leonard Wood, 
Missouri for 2 years. When he returned home, he met and married Marilyn 
Joyce Ramsey on May 16, 1964, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in 
Colby, KS. The couple began their married life together on the Kaus farm 
where John continued farming and raising sheep, which he loved. To this 
union were born five children: John, Margaret, Juanita, Marvin, and 
Nicholas.
 John never met a stranger and treated everyone like a neighbor. 
Whether he was shearing sheep or attending a kid’s ballgame, he would 
strike up a conversation and make one walk away feeling like they had 
made a new friend. John sheared sheep in Kansas and Nebraska. The 
highlight of his life was helping to shear 4-H lambs for the county 
fairs across Kansas. John had a passion for his family. Some of the 
family’s best memories are fishing at Sheridan County Lake and Norton 
Lake and attending county fairs as John loved to see the livestock and 
ride the rides. John was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American

John Nicholas Kaus (1940-2022)

James Milton Carver Jr., 74, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July
 17, 2022. He was born on December 16, 1947, in Weatherford, Oklahoma, to 
Milton and Peggy Carver. His family moved to Big Spring in 1951. He 
attended Big Spring High School where he was an all-around athlete, 
excelling in football, basketball and track &amp; field. 

After 
graduating in 1967, Jim went on to play football for Kansas State 
University on a full ride. He was named a two time All Big Eight 
Offensive Lineman, an All American and played in the Blue Gray All Star 
game in 1970. He met his wife, Carolee, during a snowball fight near the
 athletic dorms. Jim and Carolee married on July 24, 1970 and have been 
married for 52 years. After coaching and teaching in Oakley, Kansas, 
Stephenville, Early, and Blanket, Jim and his family moved to Midland, 
Texas, in 1984. He started teaching and coaching at Alamo Jr. High and 
moved to Lee Freshman in 1987 to teach history and coach. Coaching and 
investing in the lives of students was one of his great loves and 
passions. He coached until 1992 when he was sidelined by blood clots. He
 moved to Lee High in 1997 and taught history and geography until he 
retired from MISD in 2007. Along the way he taught many students in 
Drivers Ed and also showed them how to navigate life.
 Coach loved his wife, his kids, and grandkids. You could find him 
cheering at their school events, yelling at the refs and almost getting 
kicked out of their games, as well as enjoying choir concerts, dance 
recitals, supporting them in History Fair and just showing up in their 
everyday lives. He was a proud supporter of Midland Lee Rebels, Kansas 
State Wildcats, and The University of Texas Longhorns. He loved all 
things football. He was an avid car and train enthusiast and enjoyed 
spending time tinkering. He also had a passion for back seat driving, 
calling plays at any type of sporting event and having brief encounters 
with stupidity. “BRIEF!” He was notorious for his amusing exclamations 
like “Didn’t they know we were coming?!”, “Chump!”, “buzzard puke” and 
“May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your arm pits!” Coach loved 
serving and worshiping at Wilshire Park Baptist Church. He was an active
 participant in Men’s prayer breakfast and loved a mean potluck.
 With everything that Jim was and accomplished in his life, his real 
legacy can be seen in his love and belief in Jesus and showing others 
that love. And that legacy of love is carried on through his children 
and grandchildren.
 Coach is survived by his wife, Carolee Carver, his daughter Melissa 
Barlow, her husband Kent, his son Jeremy Carver, and daughter Christina 
Wren, and her husband Clint. Coach’s grandchildren Bailey, Jackson, Elah
 Grace, Keller Barlow and Nolan and Paxton Wren. Coach’s sister Connie, 
her husband George and their daughter’s Shannon, Bobby, Lauren Jackson 
and Tiffany, Shawn, and Emma Grace Hawkins. He is also survived by Uncle
 Sonny Moore, Aunt Wanda, and their family as well as Brother-in-Laws 
Cec, Dennis, Vaughn Lambert and their families.
 Coach is preceded in death by his father James Milton Carver Sr., 
his mother Peggy Louise Carver, his father in law John Cecil Lambert and
 mother in law Ruth Lorene Lambert, Brother-in-Law Ronald Dee Lambert 
and numerous Aunts, Uncles, and cousins.
 The family would like to thank Hospice of Midland for their love and

Place staff, along with the friends he made for making his last two

Dorothy Woellhof, 93 died July 20, 2022, in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; She was born on January 17, 1929 in Aurora, KS the daughter of Charles and Rosa (Bliss) Demanett.&nbsp; Dorothy was raised in the Aurora community before moving to Clay Center in 1947.&nbsp; She worked at the Swift Egg Plant and Sunflower Café before moving to Salina in 1950.&nbsp; There, she met and married Melvin Woellhof on October 29, 1950.&nbsp; They returned to Clay Center and Dorothy took a job as the cook for Garfield School.&nbsp; She retired from school food service in 1992.&nbsp; Melvin preceded her in death on December 29, 2007.&nbsp; Dorothy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and active in bowling leagues in Clay Center for over 40 years.&nbsp; She was also preceded in death by her parents, 6 sisters and 7 brothers.

Maynord E. Sherbert, 82, of Wakefield, died Monday, July 11, 2022 in Manhattan, KS surrounded by his family. He was born April 12, 1940 in Broughton, KS, the middle son of Bert and Opal (Bisnett) Sherbert. He had two brothers, William “Bill” and Jack.

Maynord attended Bala School before the family moved to Wakefield his third-grade year. He attended Wakefield School and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1958. He was one of the first inductees to the Wakefield Bombers Hall of Fame in 2018.

After graduation, Maynord had many occupations. He worked in Little River, KS for Riddle Quarries and worked construction on Fort Riley. He operated a crane for the construction of the Council Grove Dam and Milford Dam and worked for Alsop Sand Plant. He worked construction projects with Maurice Sharp and ran his own business, Sherbert Electric. For a time, he also ran his own construction jobs. With great pride, he worked as the head of maintenance for Wakefield School and as a referee for football, basketball, and volleyball for many years. He served as sexton of local cemeteries and operated Sherbert Mowing with his son and grandchildren.

On July 1, 1960, Maynord married Mildred A. Isbell of Wakefield. They lived in Little River when they were first married and then made their home in Wakefield, Kansas. They had three children, Michael, Mae, and Michelle.

Maynord served his community in a multitude of ways. He served the city of Wakefield as Mayor and City Councilman. He served on the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department for 50 years and as Fire Chief for 40 years. He served as Superintendent and was a dedicated volunteer for the Wakefield Landscape Arboretum. He volunteered at the Wakefield Museum and helped maintain the museum’s properties. He belonged to the Wakefield Lions Club, Wakefield Booster Club, Wakefield WRA, Wakefield Jaycees, Odd Fellows, and the Men’s Coffee Club.

Maynord most enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved fishing, hunting, softball, golf, gardening, and woodworking. He was a big fan of the Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas City Royals. Most weekday mornings he could be found drinking coffee with his friends. On Saturday evenings he and Mildred enjoyed playing cards at the community center.

Maynord was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Opal, and his brother, Jack.&nbsp; He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mildred of Wakefield; his children Michael and wife Vicki of Wakefield; Mae and husband Chance Horn of New Carlisle, Ohio; and Michelle and husband Bob Land of Clay Center, KS; grandchildren Brett, Abby, and Cody Sherbert; Jessica Horn Smith; Zachary Horn; and Stormi Land-Maness; eight great grandchildren; and his brother, Bill Sherbert of Marion, KS.

Maynord enjoyed anything that had to do with kids and community. He has left a legacy of kindness, service, and dedication to family, friends, and community. As a family friend stated, “We all need to be a little more ‘Maynord,’ and the world would be a better place.”

Connie Holmes, 73, of Abilene, passed away Tuesday, July 19th, 2022 at her home with her loving family beside her. She was born May 8, 1949, in Newton Iowa, The daughter of Ken and Mardy Maakestad. They moved to South Dakota where she grew up and graduated from Sturgis High School, Sturgis SD. She then moved to Denver, Colorado, and went to work at the Samsonite Suitcase Co. where she met her husband of 51 years Stan Holmes. They moved to Abilene where she worked at Abilene Country Club, Buds Tire, Jostens, and 25 years with Hurlbut Corp. Convenience Store. Connie retired from Abilene Public Schools as Garfield/Eisenhower kitchens manager. Connie is survived by daughter Tina Warford (Terry) of Salina, sisters Sheila Limbo (Bill) and Dawn Wagness (Ron) both of Sturgis, SD. brothers Scott Maakestad (Ruthie) of Littleton, CO. and Jim Maakestad, Sheridan WY. Connie Holmes, 73, of Abilene, passed away Tuesday, July 19th, 2022 at her home with her loving family beside her. She was born May 8, 1949, in Newton Iowa, The daughter of Ken and Mardy Maakestad. They moved to South Dakota where she grew up and graduated from Sturgis High School, Sturgis SD. She then moved to Denver, Colorado, and went to work at the Samsonite Suitcase Co. where she met her husband of 51 years Stan Holmes. They moved to Abilene where she worked at Abilene Country Club, Buds Tire, Jostens, and 25 years with Hurlbut Corp. Convenience Store. Connie retired from Abilene Public Schools as Garfield/Eisenhower kitchens manager. Connie is survived by daughter Tina Warford (Terry) of Salina, sisters Sheila Limbo (Bill) and Dawn Wagness (Ron) both of Sturgis, SD. brothers Scott Maakestad (Ruthie) of Littleton, CO. and Jim Maakestad, Sheridan WY. Edward Junior “Doc” Johnson, age 90 of Manhattan, went to spend eternity with Jesus on Sunday, July 17, 2022.

He was born on April 23, 1932, the son of Carl Edward and Clara Louise (Rahe) Johnson, east of Leonardville in the farmhouse where he spent his life until moving to Manhattan in 2016.

On August 23, 1964 at the Leonardville EUB Church, he married Jean Marie Anderson.&nbsp; She survives of the home.

Doc loved his family and friends.&nbsp; He had many stories to tell from his years at Lee Country School within a mile of their home as well as the Leonardville High School class of 1950.&nbsp; He was a lifetime farmer and a rural mail carrier for 40 years until his retirement in 2000.&nbsp; He was on the board of the Leonardville Nursing Home, where he served as Chairman for several years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Nancy Sipes and husband Kelly of Holton; one son, David Johnson and wife Peggy of Salina; four grandchildren, Joshua Sipes, Hannah Sipes, Abigail Johnson and Mackinley Johnson; two nephews, Grant MacDonald and Bruce MacDonald and their families who had a very special place in Uncle Edward’s heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Rolland Rahe and two sisters, Sophia Peterson and Lela MacDonald.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Mary Anne Widler, 87, of rural Enterprise, died on Sunday, July 17, 2022. She was born on July 6, 1935 on her family’s farm in the Sutphen’s Mill area north of Chapman, Kansas. Her parents were Marvin and Alice (Picking) Gfeller. She graduated from Dickinson County Community High School (DCCHS) in Chapman in 1953. She married Frank Lehman in 1954 and they lived in California while Frank was still in the Navy. Following Frank’s service in the Navy, the couple returned to Abilene where the family made its home west of Abilene. Frank and Mary raised six children. They divorced after 37 years of marriage. Mary later married Floyd Widler of rural Enterprise and they farmed together until Floyd’s death in 2016.

Mary worked at the First Presbyterian Church in Abilene as the church secretary for many years. She then worked on the staff at the National Greyhound Association headquarters for more than 20 years before retiring. She enjoyed gardening, antiques, and collecting dolls. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Alice Gfeller, her brother Platoon Sergeant John Gfeller, her sister Lt. Colonel Helen Gfeller, her sister Muriel Wyman, her former husbands, Frank Lehman and Floyd Widler, and her two daughters, Deanna Lehman and Sandra Howard.

Mary is survived by her four sons, Roger, David, Thomas, and Michael (Stacey); seven grandsons, Kalen Howard, Kenton Howard, Blaise Lehman, Brock Lehman, Brogan Lehman, Lucas Lehman, and Bentley Lehman; two great-grandsons, Haydn Howard, Rylan Howard, all of Abilene. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 21st at the First Baptist Church, 1697 2100 Avenue, Enterprise, Kansas. Pastor Stan Norman will officiate and will also be joined by Rogers Walls who will assist with the service. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Harold Edwin Smith, age 90, died July 13, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, KS. He was born May 6, 1932, in Lincoln County, Kansas, the son of Everett and Nannie (Lundstrom) Smith. On November 23, 1955, in Lincoln, he married Katherine Louise LaShell. Harold graduated from Lincoln High School. He served in the United States Army in the Infantry during the Korean War. He and his family spent over 30 years living on a small rural acreage at Sterling, KS and working as a mechanic/technician at the Michigan-Wisconsin/ANR Gas Compressor Station. His most valued role was father, grandfather and mentor where he passed on his knowledge of quality horses, livestock and life skills. He enjoyed being a craftsman, thus a repairman was rarely hired in the Smith household. In 1998, Harold and Katherine moved back to Lincoln County and fulfilled a dream of owning grassland and raising quality horses. Because retirement wasn’t enough, he took a position with the Lincoln County Highway Department as a gravel truck driver. He drove for 5 years. He loved having livestock and always had cattle and at least one horse. He enjoyed being outdoors, camping and staying busy but most of all he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. There were very few times that he wasn’t in the stands at one of the boy’s or grandkid’s livestock shows, baseball games, dance recitals, etc. He was greatly loved by his wife Katherine of Manhattan; two sons: Justin Smith and his wife Donna of Manhattan, KS, and Troy Smith and his wife Robyn of Asher, OK; one sister Elsie Bacon of Wheatland, WY; four grandchildren: Tyler Smith, Kalie Kehler (Travis), April Sidesinger (Ryan) and Sevyn Smith; and six great-grandchildren: Elliott, Rynnlee, Beckett, Lynndee, Lennox and Hadley. Harold was preceded in death by one grandson Laramie, and by six brothers. Cremation is planned. Waunita R. Ault, 96, of Wamego, Kansas passed away on July 17, 2022 at Valley Vista Good Samaritan Society Care Home.&nbsp;

Born on October 5, 1925 at the family farm at Laclede, Kansas, she was the only daughter of Leslie and Louise (Nies) Schwandt.&nbsp;

She attended local schools in Pottawatomie County and graduated from Wamego High School. She attended Kansas State University for one year and received a teaching certificate. She taught school at Laclede for 1 year before her marriage to Edgar Ault on June 1st, 1946.&nbsp; They were married 58 years. To this union was born five children.&nbsp;

Family and community was the most important thing to Waunita. As a farm wife, she fixed meals to take to the field during harvest and haying season, and often had bottle calves to tend to. She always had a garden on the farm and was an excellent cook. She was a Tannerville 4-H club leader, played the piano and taught Sunday School at LaClede Baptist Church, and was a member of Jayhawk club.&nbsp;

In 1986 Waunita and Edgar moved to Wamego and she became the cook at the Wamego Senior Center.&nbsp; She retired in 1996.&nbsp; She joined the Wamego First Baptist Church where she played the piano for church services until she was 84.

&nbsp;In 2009 Waunita moved into Grandview Suites, then later into Vintage Park. She moved to Valley Vista in 2013 where she lived until her death. She was an avid reader and enjoyed craft time, bingo, and devotions. She was a friend to all who lived and worked at the nursing home.&nbsp;

SFC (Ret.) Luis J. Nater, 81, a thirty eight year resident of Junction City, KS, passed away on Monday, July 18, 2022 at St. Francis Medical Center in Topeka, KS. Cremation will take place followed by a Graveside services that will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2022, 1:00 p.m at Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Manhattan, KS with full military honors. He was born on March 5, 1941, in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Luis Jose Nater and Trinidad Nater (Rodriguez). Luis served in the United States Army. He retired after twenty four years of service. After his retirement, he worked for the City of Junction City as the director of the water department. He retired after twenty four years of service. Mr. Nater spent forty eight years of his life serving his country and his community. During his service with the city, he was instrumental in the construction of the Buffalo Soldier Memorial and the Rathert baseball stadium. He left a wonderful legacy with his fellow co-workers. After his retirement, he resided in Newberry, FL to be near family. He was a member of The American Legion Post #45. On July 9, 2007, he married Erica Gliniecki. They recently celebrated their fifteenth wedding anniversary Luis is survived by his loving Wife, Erica, his three brothers; Richard, Jose, and Jimmy Nater and their families. He is also survived by his three children and two step-children. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ronald Nater.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During his service with the city, he was instrumental in the construction of the Buffalo Soldier Memorial and the Rathert baseball stadium. He left a wonderful legacy with his fellow co-workers. After his retirement, he resided in Newberry, FL to be near family. He was a member of The American Legion Post #45. On July 9, 2007, he married Erica Gliniecki. They recently celebrated their fifteenth wedding anniversary Luis is survived by his loving Wife, Erica, his three brothers; Richard, Jose, and Jimmy Nater and their families. He is also survived by his three children and two step-children. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ronald Nater.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dave was a
 cowboy all his life, he rode bulls and broncs in rodeos and raised 
cattle, was a horse trainer and farrier.&nbsp; He was a member of American

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Glenna Sue Ellis; and sisters, Delores Cole and Francis Corbin.

He is survived by his daughter, Constance R. Ellis of Manhattan.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 21, in Greenville Cemetery, Niles.

Sinda J. McKaig, 78, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2022 at Geary Community Hospital with her husband at her side. Cremation will take place. No memorial service is planned. Sinda was born January 8, 1944 at Fort Riley, KS, the daughter of Charles Leon and Eulalia Mae (Clark) Spittles. Sinda graduated from Dickinson County High School in Chapman, KS. David Louis Bente Wetzel, loving family man and pioneering analytical chemist, passed away on Monday, July 11, surrounded by loving family while listening to a Schubert lullaby. He was born in the blue-collar town of Rock Island, Illinois, and was proud to have worked construction for Langman &amp; Sons and Farmall, and for John Deere on the assembly line building tractors. After graduating from “Rocky High,” he headed west to Kansas, where his great-grandfather homesteaded in 1861. Dave attended St. John’s College in Winfield and then completed his BA in Chemistry at Augustana College in Rock Island in 1956. At Winfield, he fell in love with an Arkansas girl named Connie Gerdes, whom he later married and loved dearly for 67 years. Dave’s first teaching positions were at Concordia College in Seward, Nebraska, and at Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia, Kansas, where he won a National Science Foundation Award. This allowed him to complete his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry at Kansas State University in 1972. He then joined the faculty of the Department of Grain Science and Industry at KSU and pioneered the use of modern analytical techniques such as HPLC and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in the study of wheat, grains and flour. He was a prolific researcher, publishing over 120 scientific articles in 40 different journals, giving over 300 oral presentations worldwide and serving as editor for numerous journals. He published many invited articles, and his NIR photomicrograph of the layers of the retina was chosen for the cover of Science magazine in August 1999. He recently co-patented an analytical technique to improve the efficiency of milling for flour production, which he hoped would someday help improve the global food supply. Dave loved life, and whatever he pursued, he did so with intensity and passion. He loved to travel, especially to scientific meetings around the world, discussing new techniques with colleagues during the day and then going to Karaoke bars with them at night — “King of the Road” was his favorite. He loved summers doing research at Brookhaven National Lab on Long Island, where he also relished eating lobster, sailing, and jumping waves on nearby Fire Island. He served as an academic mentor and loved seeing his graduate students succeed, including one who went on to train 35 graduate students of his own at Harvard Medical School. Dave loved his family and loved family escapades, whether burning the pasture on the old Wetzel homestead near Junction City or driving night and day to Banff National Park to hike the magnificent Canadian Rockies. He loved any time with his grandkids or great-grandkids. He was always ready for a tough job, a new idea, a new friend or a new adventure. Dave was also a man of great faith who was proud of his rich Lutheran heritage. The first Lutheran church service in Kansas was held in his great-grandfather Christian Wetzel’s log cabin, now preserved at the Spring Valley Historic Site in Junction City. His father, Herman, was the longtime minister at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Island. His mother, Lois, was the daughter of Friedrich Bente, a theologian and scholar who edited the 1922 Book of Concord, the doctrinal standard of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Herman F.C. Wetzel and Lois (Bente) of Bloomington, Illinois. Jane M. Tapassi, age 87, of Wamego, Kansas, died July 14, 2022 following a short battle with terminal cancer. She was born on February 19, 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of John and Marguerite (Gilmore) Wilkey. She graduated from high school with the class of 1953. Jane earned her Bachelors of Science degree from Notre Dame College in 1957. On June 6, 1959 she was united in marriage to Andrew Tapassi. He preceded her in death in 2003. Jane was a devoted member of the Blue Star Mothers, the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, and was a charter member of the St. John Vianney Church in Mentor, Ohio. She and Andrew loved to do Revolutionary War reenacting especially at Hale Farm &amp;Village for many years. When Jane moved to Kansas, she joined the St. Thomas More parish and was welcomed warmly. She moved to Kansas in 2016 to live near her daughter Andrea, where only the past year lived with her daughter and son-in-law. She was very independent and overly sassy, however gave everyone a beautiful and joyful laugh when she interacted with anyone she met. She enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Janes love and pride for her family, friends, Catholic faith and Military Veterans ran very deep to the end. In addition to her husband Andrew, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Wilkey. Jane is survived by her son, Andrew Tapassi (Delia), of San Diego, California, and her daughter, Andrea Sinclair (David) of Wamego, Kansas. Also, her seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Jane is also survived by her sister Nancy Somintz of Kirtland, Ohio., and two beautiful nieces Beth and Jennifer who were in touch with her always, and nephew, Matthew. Jack is survived by his wife, Mary Hecker Akin; son, Tony Akin (Donna) and his daughters, Margo Holden, Tami (Jerry) Bumgarner; and also, his six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Jerry Wayne Davis, 79, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away on Saturday (July 16, 2022) at Wellsprings of Westmoreland. He was a loving husband for 41 years to his wife, Robin Trudy Davis.

Jerry was born July 8, 1943, in Portland, Oregon, to a young Soldier, Orville Eugene “Buster” Davis, and his wife, Amy Lee (Johnston) Davis, from Cushing, Oklahoma. Shortly after Jerry was born, Buster deployed to fight with the Army in Europe during World War II. Buster did not return from the war and the family returned to Oklahoma. Jerry spoke fondly of his time as a young boy in Oklahoma, with his grandparents and older sister, Greta Sue. Eventually, his mother remarried, a young Marine, Edward C. Holden, who moved the family to Manassas, Virginia, and then to San Diego, California. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Jerry lived most of his life in San Diego, graduating from Clairemont High School in 1961; a member of the wrestling and gymnastics team. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts and Life Sciences in 1966 and a master’s degree in Industrial Arts from San Diego State University in 1975. Jerry worked as a teacher for the San Diego Unified School District from 1969 until his retirement in 2001. He was a favorite wood shop, metal shop, auto shop, and science teacher to many students at Collier Junior High and De Portola Middle School, teaching hundreds of young people how to make small projects including hand flyers, radios, piggy banks, and even a surfboard.

Jerry loved working with his hands. He enjoyed woodworking, making small trinkets for the family or helping family and friends with home repairs. He also loved working on car engines of all kinds and could tell you the make, model, and year of just about any car that went by on the road. He enjoyed riding motorcycles in the Buttercup Valley sand dunes in Imperial County, CA.&nbsp; He also loved to travel, making many trips driving across the country in his RV and flying around the world.

&nbsp;He was a member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Santee, CA.

He lived a full life, with his wife Robin; two sons, Jon and Terry; two daughters Elizabeth and Barbara; two daughters-in-law, Dawn and Xenedraa; son-in-law, William; nephews, Rod and John; nieces, Dawn and Jennifer; sister-in-law, Tami; and ten grandchildren, Megan, Brian, Joel, Samuel, Emily, Eliza, Ellie, Michael, Madeline, and William.

He was preceded in death by his son Shawn. His gentle demeanor and kind soul will live on in the hearts of many.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Vera Marcene Charpie, 99 died July 12, 2022 in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; She was born on September 6, 1922 in Clay Center, the daughter of Earl and Mary (Scott) Brightweiser.&nbsp; Marcene was raised in the Clay Center community and was a was a graduate of the CCCHS Class of 1940.&nbsp; She married Warren Charpie on April 23, 1941.&nbsp; Marcene worked as a farm wife helping her husband with the crops and the animals.&nbsp; Warren preceded her in death on July 9, 2019.&nbsp; She was a member of Swedesburg First Lutheran Church, Women of the Word and Dorcus Society.&nbsp; In her free time, Marcene enjoyed quilting, painting and writing poetry.&nbsp; She was also preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters and 3 brothers.

Vera Marcene Charpie, 99 died July 12, 2022 in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; She was born on September 6, 1922 in Clay Center, the daughter of Earl and Mary (Scott) Brightweiser.&nbsp; Marcene was raised in the Clay Center community and was a was a graduate of the CCCHS Class of 1940.&nbsp; She married Warren Charpie on April 23, 1941.&nbsp; Marcene worked as a farm wife helping her husband with the crops and the animals.&nbsp; Warren preceded her in death on July 9, 2019.&nbsp; She was a member of Swedesburg First Lutheran Church, Women of the Word and Dorcus Society.&nbsp; In her free time, Marcene enjoyed quilting, painting and writing poetry.&nbsp; She was also preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters and 3 brothers.Survivors:Daughter: Carolyn and husband Ronald Wohler of Morganville, KSSister: Dorothy Klepadlo of PA2 Grandsons, Bryan and Brad Wohler4 Great-grandsons, Josh, Zach, Trace, Brock WohlerFuneral Services:&nbsp; 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2022, at Swedesburg First Lutheran Church, rural MorganvilleVisitation: 3-5 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2022, at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral HomeMemorials:&nbsp; Swedesburg First Lutheran Church c/o the funeral home

Private services for Inocencia Soto-Vargas will be held on Monday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan. Interment will be in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan. She passed away on Tuesday July 13, 2022 in Manhattan. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;
