ALMA, KS - On Wednesday, April 24th, the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the area of K-99 just southeast of the Wabaunsee High School practice field on the report of rolled over commercial truck.

A Commercial truck was northbound on K99 when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which caused it to roll onto the passenger side, blocking both lanes of the roadway.

Wabaunsee High School USD 329 SRO(WBSO), Steve Bundy was the first to arrive on scene, followed by Wabaunsee County Undersheriff, Eric Kirsch. Also, responding to the scene were AMR and the Wabaunsee Fire District 6(Alma) .

Undersheriff Kirsch can be <a href="https://fb.watch/rFhEbmCuWZ/">seen in the video</a>&nbsp;breaking out the windshield to get the truck driver out of the wrecked truck.

According to Kirsch, due to the contents of the truck, along with the fuel, they needed to get the driver out quickly to ensure his safety.

The driver was not injured in the crash and can be heard on the video asking for water immediately after getting out of the truck.

K-99 was closed for just over an hour while crews removed the truck from the roadway.

Driver extracted from overturned truck in Wabaunsee Co. on Wednesday morning

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged arson and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 7:30a.m. Wednesday, the Riley County Communication Center received a call of a fire alarm at the&nbsp;Parkwood Inn and Suites in the 500 block of S. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Officers from RCPD and Quints 2 and 3 from the Manhattan Fire Department responded to the location. &nbsp;Upon arrival, fire crews discovered an activated fire sprinkler head on the fourth floor.&nbsp;

Fire investigators determined an unknown item was ignited near the sprinkler head causing it to activate. Fire loss is estimated to be $500 with the area sustaining significant water damage.

Officers arrested Gerry Phillips, 32, of Manhattan on a probable cause offense of aggravated arson. His bond was set at $20,000.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The RCPD did not release the exact location of the fire. However, an online search&nbsp; indicates the fire occurred at the&nbsp;Parkwood Inn and Suites. at 505 MLK Jr. Drive in Manhattan.

Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Riley County Arrest Report Apr. 24

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 9p.m. Tuesday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a vehicle driven by&nbsp;Ulises Soto, 25, of Manhattan traversed a parking lot, striking a curb and a KDOT sign before traveling downhill through some bushes before coming to a stop.

EMS transported Soto to Via Christi for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.&nbsp; The accident remains under investigation, according to the RCPD.

Manhattan man hospitalized after parking lot crash

MANHATTAN — Adelaide Easter, senior in agricultural economics and global food systems leadership with minors in leadership and international agriculture,&nbsp;Salina, is Kansas State University's 39th&nbsp;<a href="https://www.truman.gov/">Harry S. Truman scholar</a>.

The Truman scholarship is a highly competitive national award that provides up to $30,000 for graduate studies, leadership training, career counseling, and special internship and fellowship opportunities in the federal government. 

Truman scholars demonstrate outstanding leadership potential, a commitment to a career in government or the nonprofit sector, and academic excellence.According to the Truman Foundation, 60 scholarships were awarded this year from a candidate pool of 709 students nominated by 285 colleges and universities.

"Adelaide epitomizes K-State's commitment to excellence and service," said President Richard Linton. "Her dedication to addressing global food insecurity and promoting agricultural equity embodies the essence of our land-grant mission. Adelaide represents the next generation of leaders who will drive positive change, and we are immensely proud of her and confident in her ability to make a meaningful impact on the world."

Easter will attend the Truman Foundation's 2025 Summer Institute program, where she hopes to work as a Zero Hunger Intern for the Congressional Hunger Center in Washington, D.C., to address food insecurity. Through the summer institute, she will also participate in a seminar series focused on domestic and global hunger, advocacy, and the root causes of hunger and poverty. Easter said to end the summer, she will complete a research project examining hunger in her local community and present potential solutions to address the problem.In the summer of 2024, she will participate in Truman Leadership Week in Liberty, Missouri, where she will meet other Truman scholars. She will also work with K-State Research and Extension as a Local Food Fellow to establish a food recovery network at K-State.

"I am passionate about combating global hunger and committed to meeting basic needs through advocacy for education and innovation," Easter said. "I am dedicated to working to build capacity that creates long-term solutions for food security and agriculture worldwide."Before graduate study, she plans to gain field experience working in the policy and development sector, potentially with the Food Research and Action Center, the World Food Programme or the Peace Corps.

Easter intends to pursue a master's in food and agriculture law to work at the intersection of policy and development, making agriculture more equitable and addressing the root causes of hunger.She is interested in one day being a U.S. Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Agency for International Development or serving on the congressional Senate Agriculture Committee."I want to do on-the-ground work involving intentionally and ethically interacting in communities to establish sustainable projects," Easter said. 

"Ultimately, I hope to work towards addressing global food insecurity through making agriculture more accessible to women, people of color, and small-holder farmers."She has already made strides toward this goal. Through 4-H, she presented the problem of feeding an estimated 10 billion people by 2050 to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. As a Flinchbaugh Food and Agriculture Policy Fellow, she interned at the state and federal levels, including with Kansas Grain Sorghum, National Sorghum Producers and U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran's office, furthering her knowledge of agricultural policy and international food assistance issues.

Easter holds leadership positions in several campus organizations, including director of leadership programming, Blue Key Senior Honorary; director of stakeholders and public relations, Food Security Scholars; student coordinator, Global Food Systems Leadership Program; founder and president, Student Basic Needs Coalition; and For Sophomores Only co-chair, Student Alumni Board.

She is a member of the Staley School of Leadership Ambassadors, the Cats' Cupboard Advisory Board, and the University Honors Program. Easter is also a Connected 'Cat intern for the president's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/president/initiatives/regional-community-visits/">regional community visits</a>.Easter's undergraduate research experience includes an in-depth desk review analyzing Kenyan women farmers' barriers to success for the Global Food Systems Leadership in Action course.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting in Manhattan.

Just before 12:30a.m. Tuesday, the Riley County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a shooting in the 1400 block of Watson Place in Manhattan, according to a media release.

Riley County Police Officers responded to the scene and found a 20-year-old woman with a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The victim was transported via air ambulance to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. Police released no additional details early Tuesday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Ram 1500 driven by&nbsp; Robert Darius Allen, 22, Bellevue, Washington was northbound fleeing from law enforcement&nbsp; on Kansas 15 Northbound one and one half miles south of U.S. 36.

The pickup traveled into the east ditch. rolled and struck an embankment.

On April 17, two civilians extinguished a fire that had started in the 6000 block of Stockdale Park Road outside of Manhattan, according to a social media report from the Riley County Police Department.

 The fire is believed to have been set intentionally. The two civilians witnessed a John Deere Gator (UTV) exiting the area and traversing to the east quickly. The driver of the UTV is described as a white male with medium-length gray hair.

Just after 6:30p.m. Saturday, police arrested 21-year-old Dache Dijon Island Jones, of Aubrey, Texas, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Jones is being held on&nbsp; a $500,000 bond on requested charges of&nbsp; distribution of a controlled substance resulting in fatality, distribution of opiate/opium/ narcotic/stimulant/heroin dosage &lt;10 units, and the utilization of a communication facility in the commission of a felony drug violation. 

The arrest stems from an incident that occurred in June of 2023 wherein law enforcement officers investigated the overdose death of a 25-year-old individual in Manhattan, Kansas.

The investigation is ongoing. Investigations into all other Fentanyl-related overdoses in our community remain active and ongoing as well. Any individuals possessing pertinent information are urged to come forward and assist law enforcement authorities.

JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Manhattan man on drug allegations.

&nbsp;Just after 9p.m.&nbsp; April 16, a Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2014 Nissan Altima for a traffic infraction near 150th and Q. Road in rural Jackson County, according to a Saturday morning report from Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.

 The driver, Clay Kendal Neville, 27, of Manhattan, was arrested on requested charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Neville was booked into the Jackson County Jail and has met the bond requirement. He is no longer in custody.

Manhattan man jailed on drug allegations 

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.7% in March. This is unchanged from 2.7% in February and unchanged from 2.7% in March 2023.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 6,400 from February. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 5,500 over the month, while government increased by 900.

The unemployment rate in Riley County is down from 3 percent in February to 2.7 percent in March. The rate in Geary County also dropped from from 4.4&nbsp; to 4.1 percent.  The rate in Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee counties also saw a decline.

Since March 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 21,800. This change is due to an increase of 16,400 private sector jobs and an increase of 5,400 government jobs.

“Preliminary estimates for March 2024 indicate strong job growth in Kansas, with total nonfarm jobs increasing 1.5% over the year, a gain of 21,800,” said labor economist, Nathan Kessler. “Private education and health services added 9,000 jobs, while government jobs increased by 5,400 since March 2023.”

Kansas State is offering two sections of Introduction to Political Science (POLSC 110) specifically for Kansas Boys State attendees. Attending KBS will fulfill a portion of the course requirements with additional course work assigned by the instructor, Nate Birkhead, Ph.D., associate professor of political science. KBS attendees wishing to take advantage of this course will be enrolled as a KSU student, but they do not have to attend K-State as the credit hours will be transferable. The tuition for the course will be $366 (payable to K-State), a nearly 70 percent savings over the regular three-hour online tuition rate of $1,181.25. “We are extremely happy to be receiving these resources for our community,”&nbsp;Kansas Sen. Usha Reddi, District 22, said. “Especially being a rural community with so many stormwater and other water infrastructure needs. We are grateful to the Governor and KDHE for providing Riley County with this major funding.”

“These are wonderful grants for two communities who have worked long and hard for many years to finally have enough money to complete both projects,”&nbsp;Kansas Rep. Lewis Bloom, House District 64, said.

Funding for the Keats will be used for a new wastewater lagoon facility and collection system to replace the aging individual residential onsite systems.

The Kansas Water Office awarded a Technical Assistance Grant to use for evaluating sites to house the new facility, while KDHE is investing $2,537,790 to help implement this project.

“This grant award represents not just an infusion of funds but a lifeline for rural communities in Riley County. Without this crucial support, residents faced losing their homes and the town of Keats could have disappeared altogether,” Riley County Planning Director Amanda Webb said. “We’re so grateful these vital rural communities will remain livable and vibrant well into the future.”

Keats Sewer Project receives KDHE Technical Assistance Grant

DICKINSON COUNTY—Law enforcement in Kansas located an abducted child in Dickinson County.

Just before 8p.m. Thursday, police in Abilene received an alert from a FLOCK license plate reader that a vehicle associated with an abducted 5-month-old child from Minnesota was in Abilene, according to a media release.

Officers located the vehicle and occupants in the 2100 Block of North Buckeye Avenue. Officers learned the child had been taken from Minnesota by a non-custodial parent.

The child was placed into police custody without incident and arrangements are being made for a safe return to Minnesota.

MANHATTAN - On Saturday, April 20th, Little Apple Pride will host Little Apple Pride Day in Manhattan's City Park starting at 3:00 pm.

Pride Day will start with the annual parade at 3:00pm. Parade line-up begins around 2:30 pm at the City Park Pool parking lot.

Community members are invited to join the parade at any point along the route, as long as barricades have not been removed from the parade route.

The parade will end at the Wefald Pavillion and Larry Norvell Band Shell, where vendors, food trucks and informational booths will be set up, along with entertainment until 7:00 pm.

Kaden Weltmer’s first three words were mom, dad and tractor. That combined passion for agriculture and family has never wavered as he worked on the family operation, took on leadership roles in 4-H and competed in FFA. Now a high school senior, his continued commitment to studying agriculture at Kansas State University and his plans to return to the family operation following college make him an ideal recipient for the 2024 Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship, administered by the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers.

“Farming is in my blood, and I’ve loved it from a very young age,” Weltmer said, adding that his first tractor ride planting corn was at three weeks old. “When other people around me are asked what they wanted to be in life, they would say they didn’t know yet. For me, I have always known what I wanted to do; I love to farm.”&nbsp;

“The only thing better to young me than Christmas was getting out of school and getting to go out and ride in the combine with my dad.”&nbsp;

The Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 to honor Herb Clutter’s influential role in organizing leadership groups on behalf of Kansas wheat producers and is supported by the generosity of the Herb Clutter family.&nbsp;

Herbert W. Clutter was a farmer from Holcomb and the first president of the National Association of Wheat Growers, which was established in 1948. Clutter encouraged Kansas wheat farmers to organize as a strong, unified voice, which led to the formation of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers in 1952. He encouraged research in education and industrial uses of wheat, improved variety development and methods to produce the best product at the lowest cost. Clutter’s efforts led to the formation of the Kansas Wheat Commission by the Kansas legislature in 1957.

Like Clutter, Weltmer grew up working on his family farm. On the family operation in Smith Center, they raise wheat, corn, soybeans and sorghum in addition to a cow-calf herd, a registered Angus cow herd and a registered Boer goat herd. The family also runs a small feed yard. Weltmer is already putting his lifetime of experience to work by cash-renting 93 acres of his own ground from his grandfather.&nbsp;

Weltmer is active in Smith County 4-H Council and FFA. His FFA agriscience project — “Digging Deeper: A Study of Stratification of Nutrients in No-till Soils” earned him a trip to nationals, where he placed second — as a high school freshman. He has also competed at the district, state and national FFA levels in multiple career development events including agronomy, agriculture mechanics, livestock judging and employability skills.&nbsp;

Next year, Weltmer plans to attend Kansas State University and pursue a dual major in agronomy and animal science — a combination of both of his parents’ degrees from K-State.

“I’ve always loved to do what any farm kid loves to do — running combines and tractors. But you can’t get a major in running a combine or a tractor,” Weltmer said. “I first started down the path of agronomy because I really liked projects like ‘Digging Deeper.’ That’s where I thought I would fall in love with agronomy. But then I continually worked with our cattle, and I decided I really like that too. That’s what led me down the path of finding the way I could come out with both.”&nbsp;

Following graduation, he wants to put what he learns to work back in Smith County as the next generation on the family operation.&nbsp;

“I plan to supplement our operation with an agronomy business focusing on custom soil sampling and drone work for people around our county,” he wrote in his application essay. “I found my passion at a young age, and I am excited to gain knowledge, connections and experiences and return to Smith County to do what I love — to maintain a sustainable operation and help strengthen our local community.”&nbsp;

KAWG awards Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship to Kaden Weltmer

FORT RILEY - On Friday, April 19th, Fort Riley will participate in a Black Start Exercise, as mandated by Congress.

The Black Start Exercise is part of a Department of Defense services test of the installation's emergency and standby energy generating systems, and to test the ability to operate without power in an emergency.

The Black Start Exercise will begin at 4:00 a.m. with a planned installation wide power outage to test the back-up systems and could last up to nine hours.

Here is the proposed schedule for the Black Start Exercise:

Soldiers, civilians and contractors on Fort Riley will work together for this exercise and will be evaluated by U.S. Army Installation Management Command and United States Army Corps of Engineers.

Fort Riley Black Start on Friday April 19th starts at 4:00 am

MANHATTAN - On Saturday, April 27th, the 3rd annual Kansas Science Festival returns to Downtown Manhattan, inviting all ages to explore the world of science.

Using STEAM((Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities to encourage curiosity in people of all ages.

“The Kansas Science Festival is more than just an event; it's a celebration of curiosity and a testament to the power of science to unite us,” says Theresa Quintana, a graduate student at Kansas State University who serves as Treasurer of the Kansas Science Festival. “We hope to ignite a passion for STEAM in people of all ages and backgrounds, creating a community where knowledge and innovation flourish, all while ensuring the journey is filled with fun and excitement.”

The Kansas Science Festival, held in Downtown Manhattan, as a street festival, anticipates drawing more than 2,000 visitors to the event.&nbsp;

The Festival is from 11am to 4pm, and includes a large variety of activities including hand-on activities and presentations about daily life within the STEAM community from practitioners from across Kansas.

Fifty booths with more than 150 presenters will be set-up along Poyntz Avenue and on the County Plaza, surrounding the Riley County Courthouse.

In addition to STEAM booths, there will be live music performances.

Poyntz Avenue will be closed from 3rd Street through 5th Street during the event, for the safety of festival goers.

 </figure>by BECKY GOFF Little Apple PostMANHATTAN - On Saturday, April 27th, the 3rd annual Kansas Science Festival returns to Downtown Manhattan, inviting all ages to explore the world of science.Using STEAM((Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities to encourage curiosity in people of all ages.“The Kansas Science Festival is more than just an event; it's a celebration of curiosity and a testament to the power of science to unite us,” says Theresa Quintana, a graduate student at Kansas State University who serves as Treasurer of the Kansas Science Festival. “We hope to ignite a passion for STEAM in people of all ages and backgrounds, creating a community where knowledge and innovation flourish, all while ensuring the journey is filled with fun and excitement.”The Kansas Science Festival, held in Downtown Manhattan, as a street festival, anticipates drawing more than 2,000 visitors to the event.&nbsp;The Festival is from 11am to 4pm, and includes a large variety of activities including hand-on activities and presentations about daily life within the STEAM community from practitioners from across Kansas.Fifty booths with more than 150 presenters will be set-up along Poyntz Avenue and on the County Plaza, surrounding the Riley County Courthouse.In addition to STEAM booths, there will be live music performances.Poyntz Avenue will be closed from 3rd Street through 5th Street during the event, for the safety of festival goers.“Our ability to arrange such a diverse range of events has been made possible through the kind contributions of individuals and organizations within our communities”, says Alina De La Mota-Peynado, President of the Kansas Science Festival. “We are especially thankful for the numerous STEAM practitioners dedicating their time to highlight the incredible variety of methods Kansans use to understand and learn about the world around us, as well as for the event sponsors who have provided resources to facilitate these events.”For more information, visit <a href="https://scienceks.org/">ScienceFestKS.org</a>.
