DICKINSON COUNTY —Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire at a pharmacy in Abilene.

According to a social media report from Paterson Health Care Pharmacy, 105 NW 3rd Street in Abilene, the fire occurred Sunday night. There were no injuries but significant damage due to the fire and smoke. The pharmacy is working with officials to determine the next steps to be taken. 

&nbsp;Pharmacy operations are currently suspended and the business has no way to access patient info that is backed up on the software server. This means the pharmacy cannot perform any transfers as well.

The pharmacy we will provide updates on social media and on our phone system as soon as possible.

&nbsp;The pharmacy encouraged customers to call their doctor and have a prescription sent to another pharmacy.

CAMDEN COUNTY, Mo.—One person was injured in an accident just after 7p.m. Sunday at Lake of Ozarks.&nbsp;

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 56-year-old Junction City woman was attempting to tie up a 2005 Sea Ray 40-foot boat at the 8 mile marker of the main channel. The vessel drifted and crushed the victim against the dock.

&nbsp;EMS transported the woman to Lake Regional Hospital. She was not wearing a life jacket, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

TOPEKA — Medicare open enrollment is scheduled to run Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. That’s when seniors can switch coverage between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage or change a prescription drug plan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Original Medicare is a health plan that has two parts: Part A (hospital insurance) covers in-patient hospital and skilled nursing care, and Part B (medical insurance) covers services from physicians and other health care providers. 

Original Medicare is managed by the federal government. This is the typical Medicare insurance most people are familiar with. These plans typically cost about $185 a month (with the cost deducted from your social security check) plus deductibles and co-payments. Many people pay extra for Medigap, to cover copays and other out-of-pocket costs, as well as a Part D plan for drug coverage.

Medicare Advantage is a health plan called Part C and is offered by private insurance companies as an alternative to Original Medicare.&nbsp; It replaces and cancels your Original Medicare plan if you choose this option. It provides the benefits of Part A, B, and often D, usually for about the same amount, with lower copays, so there’s no need for Medigap. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer benefits not in Original Medicare, such as fitness classes or vision and dental care.

Choosing between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage requires careful consideration of your finances and health needs. Medicare Advantage plans can carry hidden risks, especially for people with major health issues. Some people in Medicare Advantage plans may end up paying unexpectedly high costs when they become ill or find that their network lacks the providers they need.

With Original Medicare individuals can see any provider who accepts Medicare, which is most.

 However, Medicare Advantage plans typically require that you get care from a more limited network of providers, and in most cases, you will need a pre-authorization from the insurance payer to see specialists, receive Part B drugs, get skilled nursing facility stays or inpatient hospital stays, receive mental health services or receive diagnostic services such as procedures, labs, tests, therapy, dialysis, hearing, eye exams, dental care and many other services.

A <a href="https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M23-2480">study in the Annal of Internal Medicine</a> found that switching to Medicare Advantage was associated with increased financial burden among vulnerable populations, especially those with low incomes.

 Medicare Advantage plans also may be especially problematic for people in rural areas. A 2024 study found that nearly 6 in 10 Medicare beneficiaries living in rural areas were in Original Medicare driven by that fact that there was limited participation of local doctors and hospitals in Medicare Advantage plan networks. The networks of providers in rural areas are especially narrow, making it harder for people to get care.

In addition, several hospitals across the county have decided not to accept Medicare Advantage plans as they can be detrimental to the patients they serve and often not reliable in payments for care. This also is true in Kansas, where we have seen an increasing number of hospitals not accepting Medicare Advantage plans.

Nearly all <a href="https://www.kff.org/medicare/medicare-advantage-premiums-out-of-pocket-limits-supplemental-benefits-and-prior-authorization/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">Medicare Advantage plans</a> (99%) require approvals and authorizations before care can be given. In a<a href="https://www.ama-assn.org/system/files/prior-authorization-survey.pdf"> 2024 American Medical Association survey</a>, 93% of physicians polled said authorizations delayed medical care.&nbsp; Medicare Advantage plans denied 3.2 million prior authorization requests for health care services in whole or in part in 2023, or 6.4 percent of the 50 million requests submitted on behalf of enrollees that year, according to a <a href="https://www.kff.org/medicare/nearly-50-million-prior-authorization-requests-were-sent-to-medicare-advantage-insurers-in-2023/">KFF analysis of federal data</a>.

Kansans should be aware that the only way to learn about a Medicare Advantage plans’ approval and authorization practices is to ask your physician and hospital provider. Geary County Rural Fire said that they along with Grandview Plaza Fire worked a motor home and enclosed trailer fire on the Interstate Saturday. There were no injuries.  The trailer was a complete loss, while the motor home sustained damage to the rear of the unit.

ABILENE - Abilene is celebrating two national honors following the&nbsp; announcement of Newsweek’s 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards. 

The Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum &amp; Boyhood Home earned the title of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.newsweek.com/readerschoice/best-presidential-attraction-2025">Best Presidential Attraction</a>, while Abilene’s Victorian Inn ranked #3&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.newsweek.com/readerschoice/best-historical-bb-2025">Best Historical Bed &amp; Breakfast</a>, the only Kansas property to make the Top 10.

Todd Arrington, director of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, said the award reflects the impact of Eisenhower’s story. 

“Being named the country’s Best Presidential Attraction by Newsweek is an incredible honor,” he said. “Our team works tirelessly to preserve and share the records and legacy of Dwight D. Eisenhower, and this award shows the lasting impact of his story on visitors from across the globe.”

Adrian Potter, owner of Abilene’s Victorian Inn, called the honor a proud moment. 

“We are thrilled to be ranked #3 in the nation and proud to represent Kansas on this list. Our bed and breakfast is more than just a place to stay. It’s where Eisenhower researchers, history lovers, and travelers from around the world experience the history, hospitality, and charm of Abilene.”

Abilene honored with two Newsweek Readers’ Choice Awards

Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins alongside Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Senator Marsha Blackburn, Senator Bill Hagerty, Representative John Rose, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden, announced USDA will no longer fund taxpayer dollars for solar panels on productive farmland or allow solar panels manufactured by foreign adversaries to be used in USDA projects. 

Subsidized solar farms have made it more difficult for farmers to access farmland by making it more expensive and less available. Within the last 30 years, Tennessee alone has lost over 1.2 million acres of farmland and is expected to lose 2 million acres by 2027. This problem is not just in Tennessee, since 2012, solar panels on farmland nationwide have increased by nearly 50%. That is why the Department is taking action.&nbsp;

“Our prime farmland should not be wasted and replaced with green new deal subsidized solar panels. It has been disheartening to see our beautiful farmland displaced by solar projects, especially in rural areas that have strong agricultural heritage. One of the largest barriers of entry for new and young farmers is access to land. Subsidized solar farms have made it more difficult for farmers to access farmland by making it more expensive and less available,”&nbsp;said Secretary Brooke Rollins. “We are no longer allowing businesses to use your taxpayer dollars to fund solar projects on prime American farmland, and we will no longer allow solar panels manufactured by foreign adversaries to be used in our USDA-funded projects.”&nbsp;

“Tennesseans know that our farmland is our national security, our economic future, and our children's heritage. We were honored to welcome Secretary Rollins to Tennessee this week, and I’m grateful for her leadership to defend America’s farmland from foreign adversaries and protect our food supply,”&nbsp;said Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.&nbsp;

“Secretary Rollins understands that food security is national security, and preserving prime farmland for agricultural production is a key component of protecting our food supply. I look forward to working with her and this Administration to ensure any incentives for renewable energy projects have commonsense safeguards in place that provide options for producers while protecting our most productive farmland,”&nbsp;said House Committee on Agriculture Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson (PA-15).&nbsp;

“Transforming prime farmland into fields of solar panels drives up land prices on behalf of foreign investments, and limits production capabilities for surrounding farmers and ranchers. Taxpayers should not have to subsidize the transition of productive and useful farmland into a desert of solar panels,”&nbsp;said Senator Roger Marshall.&nbsp;“I stand with Secretary Rollins and the Trump administration, who continue to show that they are fighting for rural America and putting our farmers and ranchers first.”&nbsp;

"I strongly support Secretary Rollins’ action today implementing President Trump’s executive order de-prioritizing undependable energy sources, and protecting our prime farmland for much/needed food production. Ending wasteful taxpayer Green New Scam subsidies that have driven up energy costs and taken farmland out of production are long overdue. This action protects farmland so important to our Eastern Shore economy, strengthens American agriculture, and puts our energy independence first,”&nbsp;said Representative Andy Harris (MD-01).&nbsp;

“Green New Deal subsidies have distorted the energy market and supplanted American farmland. USDA is taking decisive action which complements policies I supported in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, ending the misuse of taxpayer dollars and upholding our national security interests in energy infrastructure. I appreciate Secretary Rollins’ leadership in restoring common sense to these USDA programs,”&nbsp;said Representative Adrian Smith (NE-03).&nbsp;

This action will rapidly eliminate the market distortions and costs imposed on taxpayers by reducing energy subsidies and builds upon the repeal of and modifications to wind, solar, and other “green” energy tax credits in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. It will further USDA’s determination to end taxpayer support for unaffordable and unreliable “green” energy sources and ensure the supply chain consists of American products and manufacturing.&nbsp;

Effective immediately, USDA will implement the following programmatic actions:&nbsp;

• For the USDA Rural Development Business and Industry (B&amp;I) Guaranteed Loan Program wind and solar projects are not eligible.

•For the USDA Rural Development Rural Energy for America Program Guaranteed Loan Program (REAP Guaranteed Loan Program), USDA will ensure that American farmers, ranchers and producers utilizing wind and solar energy sources will install units that are right-sized for their facilities. If project applications include ground mount solar photovoltaic systems larger than 50kW or ground mount solar photovoltaic systems that cannot document historical energy usage, they will no longer be eligible for the REAP Guaranteed Loan Program, and priority points will no longer be given for REAP grants.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—A Kansas teen was injured in an accident just after 7a.m. Friday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chevy Silverado driven by Lilianna&nbsp;Smallwood, 14, Harveyville, was northbound at 16583 Harveyville Road just north of Headwater Road.

The pickup traveled off the roadway to the right. The driver over corrected to the left. The pickup traveled back on to the roadway and then the driver overcorrected to the right. The vehicle then left the roadway to the right and overturned.

EMS transported&nbsp;Smallwood to Stormont Vail. An 11-year-old female passenger was not injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Jackson Tanner of Manhattan, struck multiple parked vehicles in the 1600 Block of Houston Street in Manhattan. He ran from the area. 

Just before 10:30p.m. police arrested him&nbsp;in the 1900 block of Denison Avenue on requested charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving, failure to stop at an accident, failure to report an accident with an unattended vehicle and trespass on property with critical infrastructure.

 Tanner was issued a total bond of $3,000 and is no longer confined in the Riley County Jail.

The Budweiser Clydesdales will make two appearances in the Flint Hills region next week, offering community members an opportunity to see the legendary horses up close.

The first event will take place on Thursday, August 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Fort Riley Exchange. The public will have the opportunity to meet and take photographs with the Clydesdales, engage with members of the Clydesdale team, and enjoy refreshments in the on-site beer garden. The event will include a presentation of a check for $5,000 to a recipient of Folds of Honor.  This organization provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of fallen or disabled military service members. There will also be food trucks, giveaways, and a car show on Thursday night. 

The celebration continues on Friday, August 29, in Manhattan’s City Park. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the Clydesdales will be stationed near the intersection of North Manhattan Avenue and Fremont Street, between the ball diamonds. Visitors will again have the opportunity to interact with the horses, take photos, speak with the Clydesdale team, and enjoy a beer garden experience in the park.

At 7:45 p.m., the Clydesdales will make their way through Aggieville.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Arrow Coffee Company, owned by Ben and Rachel Motley is moving out of their 1800 Claflin Road location. According to a social media posting by the company their lease was not renewed and the landlord intends to go with another coffee shop.&nbsp;

1800 Claflin road has been their home for 12 years. They have been given until Sept. 14 to move out.

&nbsp;"On August 15th (the day after Arrow’s 12th birthday), we received a letter in the mail saying that our landlord will be “going a different direction”. They also said, "We aren’t giving up and are hopeful to see out the remainder of our lease."

"When final decisions are made their staff will be moved to their downtown location "and we hope you’ll fill the ( downtown ) Bodega with even more magic that it already possesses. "

" In the coming weeks we will be keeping you all informed and letting you know how you can help. If we do only have another few weeks, we plan on making the absolute best of them, so in the meantime we hope to see your beautiful smiling faces in the cafe. "

JC Main Street and Flint Hills Regional Council partner up to Support Local Entrepreneurs

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 5:30p.m. Wednesday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2015 Ford Explorer driven by Vonda Vandwehr, 19, of Manhattan struck a pedestrian, Dimya Brown, 19, of Manhattan,&nbsp;near the intersection of Westloop Place and Claflin Road.

Riley County EMS evaluated Brown at the scene for minor injuries. She was not transported to the hospital. Vandwehr was issued a citation for inattentive driving and no proof of insurance.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) requests comments on an amendment to the Federal Fiscal Year 2025-2028 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) document.&nbsp;

The STIP is a project specific publication that lists all KDOT administered projects, regardless of funding source, and includes projects for counties and cities as well as projects on the State Highway System.

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after a traffic stop in Dickinson County.

Earlier this month a KHP Trooper conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 70 in Dickinson County for speeding, according to a social media report from the KHP Troop C.

During the investigation, the driver was taken into custody for possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and transporting an open container of alcohol.

 A vial containing a suspected dose of PCP was also recovered and has been submitted to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for further analysis. The passenger was arrested on a felony probation violation warrant originating from Kentucky related to stolen property, with nationwide extradition. The KHP did not release the names of the suspects.

KHP finds PCP, meth during I-70 traffic stop for speeding

( Manhattan Aug. 21 ) You can&nbsp; enjoy Third Thursday and the newly created Common Consumption Area (CCA) in downtown Manhattan.&nbsp; The CCA will be a permanent feature of the downtown core 365 days a year between the hours of 8am and 11pm (some exceptions occur). Patrons can purchase alcoholic beverages from Bourbon &amp; Baker, Tallgrass Taphouse and Manhattan Brewing Company and take the beverage in a plastic cup onto the sidewalks. The cups will be provided by the selling establishments.

All Kansas liquor laws will be enforced at all times. No outside alcohol is allowed in the CCA. You must be 21 + years old to purchase and consume alcohol. *Additional downtown licensed establishments will be joining the CCA in the coming months. “Most of our retailers within the CCA will allow patrons to enter their shop with an alcoholic beverage. Patrons simply need to look for the NO ALCOHOL sign on front doors identifying businesses that have opted out” said Gina Snyder, Executive Director of Downtown Manhattan, Inc. “We will be watching closely for issues and concerns that arise and address them as they come up. We are hopeful that the CCA brings an energy to downtown that mimics what we have seen during our previous special events with alcohol.” Snyder added, “one additional note for our visitors, the streets will not be closed or barricaded off to vehicular traffic. We will only close streets for a special event.&nbsp;

The August Third Thursday&nbsp; has several new additions in the line up; We Are the Branches is performing in Switch Wicked at 6:30. The concert is free and open to the public. A newly formed music group, JBC, will be performing in front of Gaia Salon. The Actor’s Theatre, a local nonprofit group will be performing popular children’s books at 5:30pm and 6:30pm in front of Wareham Hall. Three new artists will join over 20 performers, artists and vendors. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Ford Transit van driven by Blake L&nbsp;Franklin, 43, Columbus, Ohio, was eastbound in the right lane of Interstate 70 just west of McFarland Road. The the driver lost control of the vehicle when the rear right tire blew. The van traveled into the center grass median and rolled. Two people were ejected.&nbsp;

Isaiah&nbsp; Adkins, 23, West Jefferson, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Forensic Medical.

EMS transported Franklin and passenger Eric S. Brown, 23, Columbus, Ohio and Taylor D. Jackson, 30, Groveport, Ohio, to St. Francis in Topeka.&nbsp;
