“We're looking at doing something where, in the case of good, reputable farmers, they can take responsibility for the people that they hire and let them have responsibility, because we can't put the farms out of business," Trump said at a recent press conference. "And at the same time we don't want to hurt people that aren't criminals."

Yet last week, the Department of Homeland Security told Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2025/06/16/trump-farms-hotels-immigration-raids/?utm_campaign=wp_main&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank">continue raids</a>&nbsp;on farms, ranches and dairies across the United States.

That directive was&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/13/us/politics/trump-ice-raids-farms-hotels.html" target="_blank">briefly paused</a>&nbsp;by Trump following large ICE operations earlier this month — including the arrests of more than 70 people at a&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskapublicmedia.org/en/news/news-articles/people-are-scared-ice-agents-raid-facilities-in-omaha/" target="_blank">meat-packing facility</a>&nbsp;in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time, Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114670684664650262" target="_blank">wrote on Truth Social</a>&nbsp;that the policy was “very aggressive” and could take long-time immigrant workers away from farms.

Despite&nbsp;<a href="https://www.npr.org/2025/06/16/nx-s1-5430846/farming-industry-immigration-ice-worksite-enforcement-trump" target="_blank">pushback</a>&nbsp;from some leaders in the agriculture industry, as well as people advocating for immigrant worker rights, the Trump administration then&nbsp;<a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/06/19/trump-immigration-raids-farms-hotels-border-czar" target="_blank">said</a>&nbsp;it will continue targeting agriculture worksites, as well as in the hospitality industry, with a focus on people with a criminal background.

Many in the agriculture industry are concerned the policy will constrict labor and hurt both the farm business and everyday consumers. That includes Matt Teagarden, the head of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kla.org/" target="_blank">Kansas Livestock Association</a>, which represents more than 5,000 members in the state.

“These raids disrupt our food supply and contribute to higher food prices,” Teagarden said. “In addition to the workers who’ve been detained, these raids contribute to fear in these communities and lead to workers— fully legal workers — staying home out of fear.”

For immigrant workers and the rural communities who depend on their labor, the potential for incoming raids is concerning, said Sonia Parras, an immigration attorney in Des Moines, Iowa.

“The unintended consequence is that they destroyed the lives of the immigrant community, but also the industries, the mom-and-pops shops, and businesses,” Parras said. “Is the cost of a raid — on U.S. citizens and the economy of a town and surrounding areas — worth extracting or detaining immigrants in the area?”

In 2008, Parras provided pro-bono legal services when&nbsp;<a href="https://www.npr.org/2008/06/09/91327136/immigration-raid-leaves-mark-on-iowa-town" target="_blank">ICE raided a meat-packing plant</a>&nbsp;and arrested nearly 400 people in Postville, Iowa. This past week, she said her phone has been ringing “off the hook” with people calling in a panic, asking for help if they get arrested.

“When the administration — to me — prioritizes punitive enforcement that targets these workers, it creates a bit of a paradox where the very workforce that the farmers relied upon is being driven into the shadows,” said Parras.

Throughout the country, 42% of farm workers were not legally authorized to work in the U.S. in 2022, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/chart-gallery/chart-detail?chartId=63466" target="_blank">report</a>&nbsp;from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Another 19% were immigrants authorized to work through visas or who had legal permanent resident status.

Although Teagarden and others in the agriculture industry support immigration enforcement in the form of “securing” the southern U.S. border and “removing violent criminals,” he said they want to work with Trump and Congress to address the issue in a “reasonable way” that supports the industry.

“It really is clear to me that the people pushing for these raids that target farms and feed yards and dairies, have no idea how farms operate.” Teagarden said. “You can’t just turn off a cow. It doesn’t work that way. Cows have to be milked, cattle have to be fed.”

Work from immigrants in the agriculture industry has allowed labor costs for farmers and ranchers to remain low, and ultimately keep food prices lower for consumers, according to David Ortega, a professor of food economics and policy at Michigan State University.

“The agricultural sector relies heavily on migrant workers in order to do some of those critical activities that many U.S. born workers are either unable or unwilling to perform,” Ortega said. “Things like harvesting, planting, working in meatpacking plants, all of the critical activities that are needed to get food from the farm all the way to the table.”

Some agriculture stakeholders throughout the Midwest, particularly in the specialty crop sector who rely on immigrant labor, are already raising concerns, Ortega said. Without some protections in place for immigrants working in the agriculture industry, the enforcement policy is having a “chilling effect” on workers who are not easily replaced — even those who are authorized to work in the U.S. — he said.

“It's not surprising that we're seeing producers reach out to individuals in elected positions, noting that these activities, the rhetoric that the Trump administration has on illegal immigration and these mass deportations, are affecting their business,” Ortega said.

ICE raids push farm workers to stay home ‘out of fear.’ That could hurt U.S. food production

This is day 6 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvest continues across Kansas, with the USDA reporting it halfway complete, behind last year but close to the five-year average. Farmers are still seeing the effects of heavy rainfall, with muddy fields and delayed progress in several areas. Despite the setbacks, farmers across the state continue to make progress as June comes to an end.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is 53 percent complete, well behind 76 percent complete last year but near 56 percent average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 29, 2025. Winter wheat conditions were rated 24 percent poor to very poor, 28 percent fair and 48 percent good to excellent.

In south central Kansas and north along the I-135 corridor, excessive rainfall on mature wheat has made harvest difficult. As fields start to dry out and combines cut around mud holes, some localized quality issues are being reported.

In Edwards County, farmer Danny Hattrup started cutting around June 17 and is now about two-thirds of the way through harvest. He’s hoping to wrap things up within the next week. Progress has been slowed by rain delays and lingering muddy spots, which have made fieldwork more complicated than usual.&nbsp;

On Monday, the field Hattrup was cutting was yielding around 50 bushels per acre, with a test weight a little below an average year, around 59 pounds per bushel. Hattrup planted two different wheat varieties this season, and both are performing about the same so far.&nbsp;

This past weekend, harvest became a true team effort with help from his daughters, Brooke and Shelby and his son-in-law Cole, all pitching in to keep things moving.

Harvest is underway in Scott County, where Brinlee McNary, grain merchandiser for the Scott Coop, reported they took in their first load on June 20. She said timely spring rains helped the wheat significantly in the area, contributing to a strong start. The elevator has received about 40 percent of its expected volume so far.

Yields have been highly variable, ranging from 40 to 80 bushels per acre, but McNary noted yields are a little higher than in an average year. Protein levels have ranged from 7 to 15 percent, with the average coming in just under 12 percent.

McNary said the main challenges of this harvest have been the wet conditions and the presence of wheat streak mosaic virus, which has affected some fields in the area.

Kansas Wheat: Wheat harvest day 6

RILEY COUNTY —The investigation into the aggravated arson which occurred on June 13, at Walmart, 101 E Bluemont Avenue in Manhattan, is still an active investigation, according to a statement from the Riley County Police Department.

The RCPD has forwarded an affidavit to the Pottawatomie County District Attorney’s Office for review and consideration for prosecution.

The Riley County Police Department is leading the investigation into the incident while working closely with the Manhattan Fire Department.

Just before 5p.m. on June 13, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a fire reported at Walmart,&nbsp; 101 Bluemont Avenue, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, crews found people evacuating and light smoke showing at the doors. Employees were extinguishing the fire as crews arrived at the middle of the store where the fire occurred.&nbsp;

Crews ensured that extinguishment was complete by overhauling the area and taking smoldering material outside.

Just before 7p.m., Walmart was still closed while fire crews evacuate smoke from inside the building. No injuries were reported.&nbsp; There was considerable smoke damage.

Riley County Police Department, Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office, and Pottawatomie County EMS responded to assist.

Police arrested 36-year-old&nbsp;Ivan Krdzic, 36, of Manhattan was arrested on requested charges of criminal deprivation of property, domestic battery, kidnapping, harassment by telecom device, criminal threat and stalking. Krdzic is being held on a $350,000 bond, according to the RCPD.

MANHATTAN — With the Fourth of July approaching this week, people will soon gather for fireworks, food and fun. But for those with sensory sensitivities, especially children and individuals with PTSD, the holiday might not be one they look forward to. Two Kansas State University experts are here to help with tips for sensory-aware Fourth of July preparation.

<a target="_blank" href="https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/ahs/about/people/jfrancois/">Jennifer Francois</a>, professor of practice in the applied human sciences department and early childhood education program, and Arianna Williams, a licensed clinical professional counselor&nbsp;and the veteran and military-affiliated services counselor at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/counseling/">Lafene Counseling and Psychological Services</a>, say important steps include having a plan, paying attention to behaviors and reactions, finding a safe space, and having conversations about the situation.

Make a plan for firework anxietyThe Fourth of July can create a lot of anxiety and stress for individuals who have sensory sensitivities because of the loud and sometimes unexpected noises from fireworks. Francois suggests planning ahead to avoid extra stress in the event of a reaction."Having a plan before an event is important," Francois said. "For example, what is my plan going to be if my child becomes upset? Where are we going to go if I need to remove us from the situation?"For those with post-traumatic stress disorder, Williams suggests knowing where to go and having skills, such as grounding, mindfulness and meditation, that work for you if you do get triggered by something.She added that folks can also be aware of their neighborhood and discuss plans about fireworks with neighbors to find out if they are planning to start celebrating before the Fourth of July or continue celebrations after the holiday. &nbsp;

Watch for noise reactions and listen to requests for adjustment&nbsp;One of the most important things for parents is to listen to their child, Francois said."Pay attention to the child's reactions and behaviors, and watch for increased anxiety and stress," she said. "If the child becomes visibly upset and starts to cry or covers their ears or eyes, or says that they want to leave, then you want to honor that, and try and figure out a way to give them some respite from those sensory experiences."Francois also encourages parents to keep their child close."Have your child sit on your lap at first to give them the opportunity to stay close to someone they are familiar with," Francois said. Two Kansas State University experts are here to help with tips for sensory-aware Fourth of July preparation.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/ahs/about/people/jfrancois/">Jennifer Francois</a>, professor of practice in the applied human sciences department and early childhood education program, and Arianna Williams, a licensed clinical professional counselor&nbsp;and the veteran and military-affiliated services counselor at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/counseling/">Lafene Counseling and Psychological Services</a>, say important steps include having a plan, paying attention to behaviors and reactions, finding a safe space, and having conversations about the situation.Make a plan for firework anxietyThe Fourth of July can create a lot of anxiety and stress for individuals who have sensory sensitivities because of the loud and sometimes unexpected noises from fireworks. Francois suggests planning ahead to avoid extra stress in the event of a reaction."Having a plan before an event is important," Francois said. "For example, what is my plan going to be if my child becomes upset? Where are we going to go if I need to remove us from the situation?"For those with post-traumatic stress disorder, Williams suggests knowing where to go and having skills, such as grounding, mindfulness and meditation, that work for you if you do get triggered by something.She added that folks can also be aware of their neighborhood and discuss plans about fireworks with neighbors to find out if they are planning to start celebrating before the Fourth of July or continue celebrations after the holiday. &nbsp;Watch for noise reactions and listen to requests for adjustment&nbsp;One of the most important things for parents is to listen to their child, Francois said."Pay attention to the child's reactions and behaviors, and watch for increased anxiety and stress," she said. RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating an alleged motorcycle theft in Manhattan have recovered the stolen vehicle.

Just after 3:30p.m. Sunday, officers filed a report for theft and criminal damage to property in the 900 block of Laramie Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 32-year-old man reported an unknown suspect damaged then took his 2009 Kawasaki Motorcycle. 

The motorcycle was recovered later in the day, according to the RCPD. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $6,000.

 Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

In 2024, overall property crimes decreased 12.9% from 2023. In 2024, there were 43,636 theft offenses, which accounted for 75.0% of total property crimes reported. There were 14,525 burglary and motor vehicle thefts, representing the remaining 25% of property crimes. Property crimes nationwide are assumed to be underreported to law enforcement.&nbsp;

KBI releases 2024 crime stats 

FORT RILEY, Kansas – The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley celebrated 108 years of the Big Red One, and 250 years of the United States Army, during Victory Week 2025.

Victory Week is a tradition of sportsmanship, competition, and camaraderie to celebrate the First Division. Soldiers competed in a variety of sporting events, including flag football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, 3/5/10k walk/run, innovation challenge, archery and trap shoot, cycling, functional fitness, combatives, tug of war, spouse kickball tournament, and more throughout the week. The brigade with the most points from across these events takes home the coveted Victory Cup trophy.

More than 2,000 Soldiers and Family members participated in events, contributing to their units’ overall score and boosting morale. “Victory Week is a great opportunity for Soldiers to get out there and have some fun and compete against the other units,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Jason Joseph, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion command sergeant major, 1st Infantry Division Artillery. He highlighted that HHBn took first place in three events throughout the week.

The 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team captured the Victory Cup for 2025, with the brigade command team, Col. Tom Smith and Command Sgt. Maj. Jake Huckleby accepting the trophy.

“Every day is a great day to be a Big Red One Soldier, but especially today,” said Huckleby, who praised his teams’ hard work, telling them before each event, “Stay savage; prepare for battle!”

One of the cornerstone events of Victory Week is the Commanders vs. Command Sergeants Major softball game. This year’s game was held at Rathert Stadium in Junction City, highlighting the close ties between Fort Riley and the surrounding community, with the Commanders winning 26-11.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Toyota Corolla driven by Zachary Lynn&nbsp;Stinson, 43, Hutchinson, was southbound on Kansas 13 at Cedar Creek Road. The car entered into a curve, traveled left of center and encountered a northbound car. The driver corrected back into the southbound lane and lost control of the car. The car traveled onto the east shoulder, struck two guard rails and a tree.

EMS transported&nbsp;Stinson to Stormont Vail. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

New Manhattan Parks and Rec fees start July 1

The Riley County Police Department Life Saving Award was presented to Officer Brandon Gadia for his exceptional performance and life-saving actions on January 16, 2025. 

Officer Gadia responded to a welfare check concerning an individual who had not returned home and was not answering telephone calls. He collected a variety of information and issued a local alert for a welfare contact. When the reporting party later provided additional concerning details, to include missing medication and luggage, Officer Gadia pursued further leads and contacted the individual’s employer and ex-spouse. 

Through his diligent follow-up, Officer Gadia learned the individual had recently voiced intent to end their life. Officer Gadia coordinated with the agency resources that lead to a potential location near Hays, Kansas. 

Working with RCPD dispatch, he used this information to identify a motel where the individual was confirmed as a guest. Officer Gadia then coordinated with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, who located the individual in medical distress. Thanks to Officer Gadia’s persistence, coordination, and investigative skills, the individual received life-saving medical treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

RCPD officer recognized for life-saving actions

This is day 5 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvest is progressing steadily across parts of Kansas, with yields generally around average despite challenges like strong winds, scattered rain and wheat streak mosaic virus. Weather and market conditions remain obstacles. Growers are staying optimistic and focused on finishing the season successfully.

Jess Schwieterman, who farms with his wife Laryce in Hamilton County near Syracuse, reports that this year’s harvest has been going well, despite strong winds and a few rain showers. They received a good November rain, but no winter moisture and a dry March and April until it started raining the week after Easter. The grain fill conditions were excellent, and yields have been right around average, similar to last year. Test weights have held up around 60 to 61 pounds per bushel.&nbsp;

High winds brought in a spring infection of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus, turning the fields yellow. Schwieterman mentioned several varieties that have proven to have good resistance - KS Territory, KS Bill Snyder and KS Dallas. Their harvest began on June 20 and is nearly halfway finished. However, others in the area are just getting started. They have been pleased with yields, noting that the longer the fields are in no-till, the better they yield. They also manage for higher yields and have a strong fertility program. The biggest challenge this year has been the depressed wheat prices.

Kris Allen, general manager of Randall Farmers Coop in Jewell County, reports that harvest has been moving steadily across their two locations. Since taking in their first load on June 16, they’ve brought in around 700,000 bushels. Yields are ranging from 45 to 60 bushels per acre, and protein levels are holding solid at 12.6. Depending on the area, fields are about halfway to two-thirds cut, with combines rolling steadily. While this year isn’t quite as massive as last year’s crop, fueled by failed acres the season before, it’s still shaping up to be a strong and successful year.&nbsp;

Over halfway done with harvest, Brian Sieker, a farmer in Rice county, is facing the challenges of a wet season head-on, and staying optimistic.

“Mud is a challenge, but we’re grateful for it,” Sieker said. “Moisture is a welcome sight for our crop.”

“In the future, I will be taking varieties for WSMV; I haven’t in the past,” Sieker said. “We have to protect our neighbors because the investment is huge and margins are thin.”

With winter in mind, Sieker said he’s glad to have residue left in the fields. “It’s nice to have the stubble. It will hold us through the winter.”

Above all, he encourages others to check in with each other and find joy in the season.

Weather and market conditions remain obstacles. Growers are staying optimistic and focused on finishing the season successfully.Jess Schwieterman, who farms with his wife Laryce in Hamilton County near Syracuse, reports that this year’s harvest has been going well, despite strong winds and a few rain showers. They received a good November rain, but no winter moisture and a dry March and April until it started raining the week after Easter. The grain fill conditions were excellent, and yields have been right around average, similar to last year. Test weights have held up around 60 to 61 pounds per bushel.&nbsp;High winds brought in a spring infection of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus, turning the fields yellow. Schwieterman mentioned several varieties that have proven to have good resistance - KS Territory, KS Bill Snyder and KS Dallas. Their harvest began on June 20 and is nearly halfway finished. However, others in the area are just getting started. They have been pleased with yields, noting that the longer the fields are in no-till, the better they yield. They also manage for higher yields and have a strong fertility program. The biggest challenge this year has been the depressed wheat prices.Kris Allen, general manager of Randall Farmers Coop in Jewell County, reports that harvest has been moving steadily across their two locations. Since taking in their first load on June 16, they’ve brought in around 700,000 bushels. Yields are ranging from 45 to 60 bushels per acre, and protein levels are holding solid at 12.6. Depending on the area, fields are about halfway to two-thirds cut, with combines rolling steadily. While this year isn’t quite as massive as last year’s crop, fueled by failed acres the season before, it’s still shaping up to be a strong and successful year.&nbsp;Over halfway done with harvest, Brian Sieker, a farmer in Rice county, is facing the challenges of a wet season head-on, and staying optimistic.“Mud is a challenge, but we’re grateful for it,” Sieker said. “Moisture is a welcome sight for our crop.”On average, fields have produced 40-70 bushels per acre. RILEY COUNTY, KS (June 26, 2025) Riley County will begin a window replacement project at the Courthouse Plaza East (CPE) building at 115 N. 4th St. in early July. To accommodate construction, public meetings for the Board of Riley County Commissioners and the Riley County Planning Board/Board of Zoning Appeals will be temporarily relocated.

Beginning Thursday, July 3, meetings will be held at the Riley County Health Department’s Family and Child Resource Center (FCRC) at&nbsp;2101 Claflin Road. Meetings will take place in&nbsp;the lower-level conference room #124 on the west side of the building. Attendees should use the southwest building entrance.&nbsp;

Public parking is available at nearby facilities, including the EMS Station at 1115 Charles Little Road and the Health Department Clinic at 2030 Tecumseh Road. Meeting attendees are asked not to park in the upper parking lot of the FCRC to reserve those spaces for health department clients including pregnant women and young children accessing Maternal and Child Health, WIC, and Raising Riley services in that building.&nbsp;County Commissioners meetings will continue to be livestreamed on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@RileyCountyCommissionMeetings).Offices for

BHS Construction, Inc. of Manhattan is the construction manager for the $690,000 project and the windows will be purchased from Manko Window Systems, Inc. of Manhattan.&nbsp;“Investing in the building now will prevent more costly problems in the future and we’re fortunate to have capital improvement project (CIP) funds available for this purpose,” explained Riley County Commission Chair Greg McKinley. &nbsp;

Originally constructed in 1925 for the United Telephone Company, the CPE building was purchased by Riley County in 1997. Recent renovations to the fourth floor allowed the Riley County Elections Office to relocate into the space in 2024. Riley County Commission Meetings to Temporarily Relocate During Courthouse Plaza East Renovation

Pottawtomie County officials announced that beginning Monday, July 7 work will take place to improve the road shoulders on Flush Road between Kirtner Lane and Eliza’s Road, known locally as Kirtner Hill.  

During daylight hours Monday through Friday, Flush Road will be reduced to one lane with flaggers and a pilot vehicle directing traffic through the work zone.  

Motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes when traveling through the work zone.&nbsp;Both lanes will be open to traffic in the evenings and weekends.

This work is weather dependent but is expected to be completed by August 12, 2025.

The Geary County Sheriff's Office said all three suspects are now in custody. Thursday morning, June 26 at approximately 9:14 AM, the Geary County Sheriff's Office received multiple 911 calls reporting an individual walking along Interstate 70. Deputies responded and made contact with the individual, who was identified as Desmond Gragston Jacharien, of Kentucky - one of the outstanding suspects from Thursday night's manhunt. He was taken into custody without incident.

Later in the day, at approximately 11:47 AM, additional 911 calls were received regarding an individual walking along McDowell Creek Road. Deputies with the Geary County Sheriff's Office responded and identified the individual as Derrick K. Givens, also from Kentucky - the third and final suspect involved in the foot pursuit and manhunt from the night prior. Givens was taken into custody without incident.

All three suspects involved in the vehicle pursuit and subsequent manhunt are now in custody. The individuals are currently being held at the Geary County Detention Facility, awaiting their first court appearance

On the evening of June 25, 2025, at approximately 11:24 PM, a detective with the Junction City Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Interstate 70. The vehicle failed to stop and fled, prompting a pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

The vehicle was pursued by the Junction City Police Department, Geary County Sheriff's Office, Riley County Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff's Office, Morris County Sheriff's Office, and the Kansas Highway Patrol. The pursuit continued until the suspect vehicle became disabled near McDowell Creek Road. At that time, three individuals fled from the vehicle on foot, initiating a large-scale manhunt. 

An Everbridge alert was sent to residents in the area, advising them of the potentially dangerous individuals and urging them to take necessary precautions. Law enforcement personnel from all previously mentioned agencies immediately began a coordinated search of the area. The Kansas Highway Patrol’s air unit also provided critical aerial support during the manhunt. 

After an extensive search, the primary suspect—identified as Robeon Demetrius Downs, of Kentucky - was located and taken into custody. At that time, the search was called off. 

A search of the suspect vehicle resulted in the discovery of approximately 84 pounds of marijuana and over $18,000 in U.S. currency. 

While it is believed that the other individuals who fled the scene are no longer in the immediate area, residents in the McDowell Creek area are encouraged to remain vigilant. If you observe any suspicious individuals or behavior, please contact 911 immediately. Remember: If you see something, say something. 

The Junction City Police Department extends its appreciation to the Geary County Sheriff's Office, Riley County Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff's Office, Morris County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, and all personnel involved for their professionalism, dedication, and teamwork. Their combined efforts were instrumental in safely resolving this incident and ensuring the safety of our community.

Authorities have ceased operations trying to locate the other two due to the thick terrain and the fact that the primary target has been apprehended.

Law enforcement does not believe anyone is in danger at this time. Notify and report anything or anyone suspicous by calling 9-1-1.

UPDATE: JCPD says a Pursuit and Manhunt has led to an arrest - all 3 suspects now in custody

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for alleged criminal threat.

Just before 5:30p.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for aggravated criminal threat in the 1100 block of Westport Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 19-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man reported a 41-year-old woman told them she had an explosive device. Upon their arrival, RCPD officers confirmed there was no explosive device.

 Tisha Steenrod, 41, of Kansas City, Missouri was arrested on a requested charge of aggravated criminal threat. She is being held on a $15,000 bond.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 5% very short, 16% short, 72% adequate, and 7% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 8% very short, 21% short, 65% adequate, and 6% surplus. 

Winter wheat condition rated 9% very poor, 14% poor, 32% fair, 40% good, and 5% excellent. Winter wheat coloring was 97%, near 100% last year and 94% for the five-year average. Mature was 75%, behind 91% last year, but near 71% average. Harvested was 20%, well behind 49% last year, and behind 31% average. 

Corn condition rated 1% very poor, 5% poor, 29% fair, 53% good, and 12% excellent. Corn emerged was 95%, near 97% last year and 96% average. Silking was 5%, behind 10% last year, and equal to average. Soybean condition rated 1% very poor, 5% poor, 30% fair, 55% good, and 9% excellent. 

Soybeans planted was 86%, behind 91% both last year and average. Emerged was 76%, behind 81% both last year and average. Blooming was 1%, equal to last year, and near 2% average. 

Sorghum condition rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 37% fair, 48% good, and 11% excellent. Sorghum planted was 79%, behind 84% last year, and near 82% average. 

Cotton condition rated 4% very poor, 26% poor, 38% fair, 30% good, and 2% excellent. Cotton planted was 95%, near 96% both last year and average. Squaring was 5%, well behind 27% last year, and behind 21% average. 

Sunflowers planted was 73%, behind 80% last year, and near 77% average. 

 Pasture and range conditions rated 3% very poor, 8% poor, 28% fair, 50% good, and 11% excellent.

FORT RILEY, Kansas – The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley celebrate 108 years of the Big Red One during Victory Week 2025.

Victory Week is a tradition of sportsmanship, competition, and camaraderie to celebrate the First Division. This year they also celebrate the Army’s milestone 250th Birthday. Soldiers are competing in a variety of sporting events, including flag football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, 3/5/10k walk/run, innovation challenge, and more throughout the week. The Brigade with the most points from across these events will win the coveted Victory Cup trophy, presented Friday, June 27, before the Maddie &amp; Tae concert at Artillery Parade Field.

One of the cornerstone events of Victory Week is the Commanders vs. Command Sergeants Major softball game. This year the game will be held at Rathert Field in Junction City, highlighting the close ties between Fort Riley and the surrounding community. The game takes place Thursday, 26 June at 5 p.m.
