Junction City senior&nbsp; Michael Boganowski announced on social media that he is ready to announce where he will play college football next season. 

Boganowski, the number one ranked player in the state of Kansas and a four star recruit according to rivals.com, has narrowed his choices down to four schools. They are KU, K-State, Florida State, and Oklahoma.&nbsp;

Boganowski will make his decision on Thursday, October 19th at 4:00 p.m. in the gym at Junction City High School.&nbsp;

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon blocks any part of the Sun. On Saturday, October 14, 2023, a solar eclipse will be visible (weather permitting) in North, Central, and South America. All 49 continental U.S. states will experience at least a partial eclipse, as will most of Canada and all countries in Central and South America.

Partial solar eclipse visible in Kansas on Saturday

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage to property in Odgen.

Just before 7p.m. Monday, police&nbsp;filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 400 block of Clydesdale Drive in Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Opportunities Unlimited reported a known juvenile broke a window to the residence with a rock. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $5,000.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The labor shortage continues to hinder Main Street as small businesses struggle to find good help.

"All year, Kansas job creators have stood in the gap of their open positions, all while trying to recruit top talent and retain their employees," said Dan Murray with NFIB Kansas. "This challenge is compounded by inflation, which continues to put a pressure on prices. We have seen in our most recent jobs report, 43% of all small business owners have reported job openings they could not fill in this current period. That's up three points from our August report."

The growth of small business owners is slowed by their inability to attract and retain talent.

"It inhibits the small business owner from growing and filling those positions," Murray said. "It also distracts the small business owner, because they are performing the duties of the job that they would like to fill with other employees. Certainly, on both fronts, it hinders that growth. The positive for those looking for employment is, small business owners are willing to pay more. They're willing to compensate more through wages and benefits."

The percent of small business owners reporting labor quality as their top business operating problem remains elevated at 23%.

"Thirty-six percent of small business owners report that they have raised or are beginning to raise compensation," Murray said. "Again, that can be through wages, insurance, other benefits, as well. Those that are currently employed, small business owners are raising their compensation, as well, to retain those employees."

Overall, 61% of owners reported hiring or trying to hire in September, up two points from August.

K-State hosts Preparedness Week activities

RILEY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 7:30p.m. Saturday in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2013 Fiat 500 driven by Lisinda Bach, 42, of Ogden and a 2012 Cadillac CTS driven by Jason Kridner, 46, of Manhattan, crashed&nbsp;near the intersection of Anderson Avenue and Wreath Avenue.

EMS transported Bach to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. Police also issued her a citation for failure to stop at a red light.&nbsp;

One remaining chore for fall gardens includes prepping the garden for spring. Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini said now is a great time to prepare the soil.&nbsp;

“With drier fall weather, the soil is less likely to clump when it is tilled,” Domenghini said. “Any clumps that do form will break down over the winter as the soil freezes and thaws, leaving behind soil that’s ready to plant in the spring.”&nbsp;

Domenghini said working the soil in the fall also breaks down debris, contributing organic matter back into the garden.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Debris provides a habitat for diseases and insects. Tilling it into the soil disrupts the habitat and prevents pests from overwintering and wreaking havoc on next year’s crops,” she said.&nbsp;

When adding organic matter into the soil, Domenghini suggests following the general rule of incorporating two inches of organic matter to the surface and tilling it in. Leaves and garden waste can be mowed first to cut it into smaller pieces that will break down more quickly.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Well-tilled soil should have pellet-sized particles. Use caution not to over till the soil and turn it into dust,” Domenghini said.&nbsp;

Domenghini and her colleagues in K-State's Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html">Horticulture Newsletter</a>&nbsp;with tips for maintaining home landscapes and gardens. PRATT&nbsp;– Bird hunters – the wait is over! The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Park’s&nbsp;2023 Kansas Upland Game Bird Forecast&nbsp;is now available online and soon in printed form.

Produced annually by KDWP’s Wildlife Division, the&nbsp;2023 Kansas Upland Game Bird Forecast&nbsp;is compiled from data collected during the Department’s spring calling surveys for pheasants (crow counts), quail (whistle counts), and prairie chickens (lek counts), as well as late-summer roadside surveys for pheasants and quail.

Kansas continues to support above-average quail populations with spring densities similar to last year, including significant increases in portions of the western regions of the state this spring.

Rains beginning in early summer and continuing through much of the nesting season greatly improved habitat conditions across the state. Given the high spring densities and improved summer conditions, staff expected to see increased production on the brood surveys this year.

Despite these conditions, brood detections were decreased. This may be attributed, in part, by the abundant habitat available during the survey.

Still, Kansas maintains one of the strongest quail populations in the country and, given the abundant access, harvest will again be among the highest in the country. The best opportunities will be in the central regions of the state into the Flint Hills, with quality hunting opportunities scattered throughout the remaining regions.

Intense drought conditions throughout 2022 reduced pheasant populations and the available nesting cover for 2023. Precipitation across most of the primary range this summer greatly improved habitat conditions for chicks. 2023 Kansas Upland Bird Hunting Forecast now available from KDWP

The Manhattan Indians defeated the Junction City Blue Jays 38-7 on Friday night at Bishop Stadium in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Manhattan scored on the first possession of the game on a 37-yard touchdown run by junior running back Jaydin Hudley. The Indians never looked back as they coasted all night on offense. Quarterback Carter Aslin had two rushing touchdowns on the night, which brings his total to 10 rushing touchdowns on the season.

For the Blue Jays, the offense moved the ball periodically throughout the game, but special team miscues doomed Junction City early in the game. Between a muffed punt and a bad snap going over the head of the punter that was scooped and scored for a touchdown, the Blue Jays could not respond after being down 23-0 at halftime.&nbsp;

Junction City did score late on a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brock Bazan, to sophomore wide receiver, Scholar Brown. It was Bazan's ninth touchdown pass of the season, and it was the first varsity touchdown for Brown.&nbsp;

Manhattan improves to 5-1 on the season, and Junction City falls to 3-3 on the year. Manhattan has won the past three matchups in this rivalry.&nbsp;

Next week both teams will be on the road, with Manhattan traveling to Lansing and Junction City traveling to Topeka High.&nbsp;

LEONARDVILLE - The newest addition to the Riley County Emergency Medical Services(EMS) is a brand new EMS Station located in Leonardville.

On Saturday, October 14th, the community is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house starting at 10:00 a.m. The station is located at 506 E. Barton Road in Leonardville.

The new station will hold a full-time ambulance and crew, ready to respond to medical emergencies in the northern part of the county 24/7/365.

The facility includes an ambulance bay, two bedrooms, an office, a full bathroom and kitchen.

”As a Public Service leader, we are always excited when Riley County EMS can enhance our service to the community. This station will do just that,” said Riley County EMS Director David Adams.

Schultz Construction built the facility which was designed by Anderson Knight Architects, both of Manhattan.&nbsp;

The total budget for the new station including construction costs, materials, fixtures, and a new ambulance is $1.49 million. Funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPS) paid for the project.

Riley County EMS is an Advanced Life Support service that answers approximately 5,500 calls for service in Riley County each year. It is the mission of Riley County Emergency Medical Service to support the people of Riley County, Kansas by pursuing excellence in pre-hospital healthcare, injury and illness prevention, and community outreach.

Scammers are using social media to go after your money and personal information. And it’s working: since 2021,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2023/10/ftc-data-shows-consumers-report-losing-27-billion-social-media-scams-2021">people have reported</a>&nbsp;losing $2.7 billion to scams that started on social media — way more than with any other contact method.

Scammers like social media because they can pretend to be someone they’re not. They can hack your profile, pretend to be you, and con your friends. They can target you and others using information from your profile like your age, hobbies, and what you buy. And they can do all this at little to no cost.

So what do social media scams often look like? Scammers might target you with an ad for something, but after you pay (for the thing that turns out to be fake), they take your money and run. Or they might try to sell you on a bogus investment opportunity (often involving cryptocurrency). Or they might send a friend request out of the blue and pretend to be a potential love interest. But then…they ask for money.

To avoid these and other scams on social media:

FTC: That friend request could be from a scammer

MANHATTAN, KAN. – Meadowlark hosted a housewarming event Wednesday, Sept. 27, for its new 24-unit independent living apartment building located on the main campus in Manhattan. The new building is called The Monarch and is located on the southeast corner of Meadowlark Road and Meadowlark Circle.

&nbsp;All 24 apartments within the Monarch are sold and occupied. The sales process for the new building began in 2019 and the project was put on hold after the pandemic began in 2020. On March 16, 2022, the crew broke ground on the much-anticipated project.

The project was born from a Community Needs Assessment, that determined Manhattan needed and could support more age-and income-appropriate housing. People who are

considering a move to Meadowlark have indicated they enjoy the lifestyle that living on campus has to offer and would like to see a modern living option with high ceilings, lots of natural light, underbuilding parking, and pet friendly. The now completed Monarch building incorporates all these modern-living options and it is centrally located on Meadowlark’s campus, featuring two towers connected by a common space at the main level.

“Retirement living will continue to change,” said Lonnie Baker, CEO. “It is our priority at Meadowlark to continue evolving, ensuring the organization upholds its mission to meet the community needs and be a resource for the region and beyond.”

Baker appreciates the focused and dedicated efforts of Meadowlark’s Sales team during the entire process of designing, selling, and constructing the new building. “Abby Cavender, Doug Fiser, and Jayme Minton led the charge and successfully sold 23 of the 24 units before we even broke ground. They did a wonderful job, and we are proud to have them on our team.”

The Monarch building is another step in Meadowlark’s campus-expansion journey focused on wellness and enhancing lifestyle options and amenities. On Meadowlark’s campus there is a nature area at Bayer Pond and a trail system spanning the organization’s 55 acres.

Within the outdoor nature area, residents and families can enjoy a fishing pond, two pondside gazebos, a birding glen, wildflowers, and a variety of terrains throughout the trail system, which also features three bridges.

In July 2019, the courtyard, which is centrally located in the main building, was renovated and is now home to a fire pit, putting green, walking path, covered seating, outdoor dining options, and a bar and grill.

In August 2020, Meadowlark’s restaurant and pub expansion and kitchen renovation was completed. This project began before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out and because of its completion date falling in the middle of heightened precautions, the restaurant opened for in-person dining for the first time on Feb. 8, 2021. Prairie Star Restaurant has expanded its pub and dining space and added event space that can accommodate up to 250 people. The restaurant space is open to residents, families, and Meadowlark Passport members to come dine, drink, and gather.

Meadowlark is a not-for-profit retirement community founded in 1980 by a group of local citizens and six Manhattan churches who wanted a better living option for older adults in the area. The new building is called The Monarch and is located on the southeast corner of Meadowlark Road and Meadowlark Circle.&nbsp;All 24 apartments within the Monarch are sold and occupied. The sales process for the new building began in 2019 and the project was put on hold after the pandemic began in 2020. On March 16, 2022, the crew broke ground on the much-anticipated project.The project was born from a Community Needs Assessment, that determined Manhattan needed and could support more age-and income-appropriate housing. RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged fraud in Manhattan.

Just after 2:30p.m. Thurday, officers filed a report for fraud in the 1000 block of Westloop Plaza in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Kansas State Bank reported a known male suspect cashed 2 fraudulent checks at the bank in September and October. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new allegations after an arrest in Riley County.

Just after 4p.m. Thursday, police arrested 43-year-old Desie Chatfield of Hutchinson after being transported to the Riley County Police Department, according to the department activity report. 

Chatfield was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation. The original charge was for unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Chatfield is being held on a of $7,500 bond. 

He has previous convictions for domestic battery, aggravated domestic battery, criminal threat, criminal damage to property and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Kan. man with a history of crime jailed on new allegations

RILEY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 4:30p.m. Thursday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2008 Ford Expedition driven by Chance Omli, 22, Manhattan struck a 2013 Hyundai Elantra driven by Travis Peters, 42, Havensville, in the 8200 block of Highway 24.

Barry Flinchbaugh, a beloved figure during a 49-year career in agricultural policy at Kansas State University and in national farm politics, was inducted posthumously into the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aghalloffame.com/">National Agriculture Hall of Fame</a>&nbsp;on Oct. 5.

Flinchbaugh, who passed away in November 2020, was represented by his wife, Cathy, during ceremonies held in Bonner Springs, Kansas.

Flinchbaugh was well known as one of the country’s leading experts on agricultural policy and agricultural economics. For more than four decades, he was a top advisor to politicians of both major political parties, including Secretaries of Agriculture, chairs of the House and Senate Agriculture committees, and numerous senators and state governors.

He was involved to some degree in every U.S. Farm Bill written since 1968 and served on many national boards, advisory groups and task forces, providing input on domestic food and agricultural policy.

“When it comes to agricultural policy in Kansas, the United States and internationally, say one word -- Flinchbaugh -- and anyone who has been involved in any way with or studied agricultural policy in the last half century knows exactly who you are talking about," said Mike Seyfert, a former Flinchbaugh student who is currently the president and Chief Executive Officer of the National Grain and Feed Association.

"Barry was not political with a capital 'P', but his fingerprints were on virtually every piece of major agricultural legislationfor a 50-year period."

Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam called Flinchbaugh "a continuous student of the current financial status of the American farmer."

"He was a shining example of being non-partisan and fact-based when reacting to agricultural policy concepts. His authority on agricultural issues made him a trusted advisor to many people in the policy arena."

Flinchbaugh served as chair of the Commission on 21st Century Production Agriculture, which was authorized in the 1996 Federal Activities Inventory Reform (FAIR) Act, also known as the Freedom to Farm Act.

"There were leaders who loved Barry and there were some who he made mad as hell," Seyfert remembers. "But they all agreed that he was one of the brightest minds he ever met."

Since coming to Kansas State University in 1971, Flinchbaugh taught a 400-level course in agricultural policy and served as an agricultural economist for extension. He taught more than 5,000 students, and his former students include governors, members of the house and senate, staff for agricultural trade organizations, lobbyists, professors, deans, county commissioners and school board members.

He is remembered for his impactful storytelling style and his tremendous commitment to his students and those he served throughout the state. Until his death in 2020, Flinchbaugh received approximately 100 speaking invitations a year and authored 100-plus publications, including an agricultural policy textbook.

"He was one of a kind; there will never be another Barry Flinchbaugh," said Ernie Minton, the Eldon Gideon Dean of K-State's College of Agriculture. "I don't believe any incoming faculty member would be able to pull off what Barry pulled off so expertly for so many years."

Flinchbaugh was inducted into this year’s National Agriculture Hall of Fame class alongside fellow Kansan Junius Groves, who was born into slavery but built a successful farm and other other businesses near Edwardsville, Kansas in the early 1900s; and Fabiola Cabeza de Baca, a Spanish-speaking pioneer in agriculture and the cooperative extension service in New Mexico prior to her death in 1991.

Cathy Flinchbaugh said her late husband "would just love" being recognized by the Hall of Fame.

"He was so involved with agriculture that this would be the highlight of his career," she said.

The National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1960 to serve as the national agricultural museum and memorial to farming leaders. Its mission is to provide education on the historical and present value of American agriculture, and to honor leadership in agribusiness and academia.

Ice College of Engineering</a>&nbsp;will continue to engage in a wide range of technology-based economic development activities across the region with partners to provide a positive economic impact for the state of Kansas."We are extremely pleased that the Economic Development Administration and the Kauffman Foundation have chosen to support our efforts to become increasingly engaged with organizations across the region to provide new levels of statewide connectivity and technology-based business development services," said Jeff Tucker, executive director of the Technology Development Institute.The $2 million University Center initiative is a five-year project sponsored by the Economic Development Administration, or EDA, with matching funds provided by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. "We believe that having an experienced staff of business and engineering professionals can significantly reduce the cost and time required to develop new technologies."In addition to continuing to provide business and engineering assistance to individual businesses to help drive economic impact, TDI will also provide technology-based economic development strategy planning to regional development organizations throughout Kansas. It will extend the business and technical planning resources of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska for planning future strategic projects.The continuation of this University Center also serves to support the goals of the K-State 105 initiative, Kansas State University's answer to the call for a comprehensive economic growth and advancement solution for Kansas. The initiative leverages the statewide K-State Research and Extension network to deliver the full breadth of the university's collective knowledge and solution-driven innovation to every Kansan, right where they live and work. Additionally, K-State 105 forges the connections and partnerships that create access to additional expertise within other state institutions and agencies, nonprofits and corporations — all part of an effort to build additional capacities and strengths in each of the 105 counties in the state."I am excited to be working with TDI as part of the K-State 105 program and greatly value the resources and connectedness that this EDA University Center program will provide us to help reach the goal of bringing K-State services and expertise to every part of the state," said Jessica Gnad, director of K-State 105.

The rivalry game between the Junction City Blue Jays and the Manhattan Indians is set for Friday night at Bishop Stadium in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Junction City is 3-2 heading into the matchup, with Manhattan's record being 4-1. Both teams have been defeated by Washburn Rural this season, with Junction City losing to the Junior Blues last week by a score of 28-7, and Manhattan lost to Rural two weeks ago by a score of 35-28.&nbsp;

Both teams have been defeated by Washburn Rural this season, with Junction City losing to the Junior Blues last week by a score of 28-7, and Manhattan lost to Rural two weeks ago by a score of 35-28.&nbsp;Manhattan brings a high-powered offense into the game, led by quarterback Carter Aslin who has thrown for 611 yards on the year and also rushed the football for nearly 700 yards and eight touchdowns. Aslin and the Indian's offense will go up against a strong Blue Jay defense led by Michael Boganowski. Junction City has only given up two touchdowns in the past three games. (Last Friday, Washburn Rural had two special teams scores and a defensive score to go along with one offensive score.)Manhattan has won the past two meetings, with Junction City picking up their last win in the rivalry in the 2020 season.&nbsp;The matchup between the Blue Jays and the Indians is a matchup that dates back to 1913 (and potentially earlier than that) according to Kansas High School Football History's website.&nbsp;You can hear the game on 107.9 FM/1420 KJCK.
