RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage to property in Manhattan.

Just before 10:30a.m. Monday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 1300 block of Laramie Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The City of Manhattan reported a known male suspect damaged the parking garage elevator. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $5,000

MANHATTAN — The Kansas State University and Stormont Vail Health Research Collaboration has been expanded with the launch of a new clinical research space to create more opportunities for clinical health care research collaboration between K-State faculty and students and Stormont Vail practitioners and patients.

The partnership between K-State and Stormont Vail began in 2020 with a collaborative study between the health care system and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/kines/about/people/cade.html">Carl Ade</a>, K-State associate professor of kinesiology, and it has extended to be a universitywide opportunity."

K-State research has needs for clinical expertise as well as patients for research studies, and Stormont Vail has clinicians who want to be involved in research and patients who want to be involved in studies," Ade said. "It's a great opportunity for both parties to engage in a mutually beneficial partnership."

Ade serves as the liaison between Stormont Vail and K-State, connecting university researchers to physicians and patients at Stormont Vail and vice versa."

My team wants to bridge the gap and make it easier for K-State researchers to access the clinical expertise and patients and for Stormont Vail to access the scientific powerhouse that is K-State," Ade said. "This benefits the patients of this region — they can give back through research studies, and it gives patients in this part of the state access to research trials they might not have access to otherwise."

According to Ade, if a Stormont Vail physician or nurse has an idea but no time or resources to explore it, they can reach out to him for connections to faculty members who are working in that research area. Likewise, if a faculty member is leading a research project that requires a clinical study, Ade can facilitate a connection with Stormont Vail's clinical research center to see if the study is feasible and potentially seek out eligible patients to participate."

The recent openings of the Stormont Vail Health Manhattan Campus and Flint Hills Campus in Junction City surround the university with new Stormont facilities, resources, health care providers and patients," said Mary Martell, vice president and regional administrator for Stormont Vail. "What we can do together is unlimited; it's an exciting time for our health system, the patients and communities we serve, and for the next generation of the scientific platform we are creating with K-State."

The new dedicated research space is provided by the C. Clyde and Midge Jones family. It includes an exam room with clinical space for research studies at Stormont Vail's Manhattan Campus.

All research will be faculty-driven, and there will be opportunities for students to be closely involved."

This is a great opportunity for pre-health students and those who work in research labs," Ade said. "They may be able to go collect data in a clinical setting and be involved in these types of studies that are typically only available at institutions with medical schools."

Though the expanded partnership and new space were just formalized in fall 2023, there are already multiple collaborative projects in early stages, including those with researchers from K-State's Carl R. Ice College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Health and Human Sciences, and the Cognitive and Neurobiological Approaches to Plasticity, or CNAP, Center."

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Cold Weather Rule, designed to help Kansans who are behind on their utility payments avoid disconnection during the winter months, will begin on Wednesday, November 1 and remain in effect through March 31.

While the Cold Weather Rule is in effect, utility companies cannot disconnect a customer's service when the local temperatures are forecast to drop below 35 degrees within the following 48-hour period. The Kansas Corporation Commission, the agency that regulates public utilities in the state, implemented the rule in 1983 to prevent utility companies from disconnecting a customer's natural gas or electric service during periods of extreme cold.

The Cold Weather Rule also requires utility companies to offer a 12-month payment plan to allow consumers to maintain or re-establish service. Any residential customer with a past due balance will qualify for payment arrangements; however, it is the customer's responsibility to contact their gas or electric company to make those arrangements.

Payment plan terms to maintain or restore service require that customers agree to pay 1/12th of the total amount owed, 1/12th of the current bill, the full amount of any disconnection or reconnection fee, plus any applicable deposit to the utility. The remaining balance must be paid in equal payments over the next 11 months, in addition to the current monthly bill.

Just after 5p.m. Sunday, police arrested 37-year-old Amy Roth of Manhattan in the 400 block of Leavenworth Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Roth was arrested on probable cause offenses of burglary and criminal trespass. Roth was issued a total bond of $12,000 and is no longer in custody

She has previous convictions for theft, forgery, burglary and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a member of the Kansas State University basketball team for an early morning incident in Manhattan.

Just before 2a.m. Sunday, police arrested 22-year-old Naeqwan Tommy Nicholas Tomlin of Manhattan at Tubby's Sports Bar, 1127 Moro Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department arrest report.&nbsp; <a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/nae-qwan-tomlin/11221">Tomlin is a senior member</a> of the K-State basketball team, according to the school's web site.

Tomlin was held on a $750.00 bond on requested charges of&nbsp;Disorderly conduct; Brawling or fighting.&nbsp; He posted bond and was released just before 5a.m., according to online jail records.

 &nbsp;Police released no additional detail early Sunday.

Just before 3a.m. October 21, the Riley County Police Department Communication Center received several 911 calls reporting gunfire.&nbsp;When officers arrived on scene, they found 2 male victims with gunshot wounds. A 3rd male victim arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound from the incident.&nbsp;

On Thursday evening police reported the arrest of 21-year-old Cordarius Gowdy; 18-year-old Damerius McGee both of Ogden and Christopher Stowers, 21, of Manhattan on requested charges&nbsp; of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and one count of firing into an occupied dwelling.

RILEY COUNTY - On Monday, October 30th, Kansas Department of Transportation(KDOT) crews will begin an emergency repair project on the 56th Avenue bridge over K-18.

KDOT will be repairing damages previously made to the underside of the bridge by a semi truck hauling large equipment.

The initial phase of the project will close the westbound K-18 lanes under the bridge and the 56th Avenue bridge while crews repair or replace damaged girders on the underside of the bridge.

Westbound traffic on K-18 will be re-routed up the 56th Avenue off-ramp and back onto K-18 using the on-ramp. The stop sign at the top of the off-ramp will be covered and traffic will be reduced to a 30 mph speed limit through the area.

Eastbound traffic on K-18 will not be affected by the project. The eastbound K-18 off- and on-ramps will be open for travel south of the bridge only during the repair project.

Travelers wanting to reach the Manhattan Regional Airport will need to use either the Scenic Drive exit east of the airport and follow Skyway Drive west to the airport or take the K-114 exit west of the airport and follow Skyway Drive east to the airport.

KDOT expects the first phase to be completed in late December, weather permitting, which will allow westbound K-18 to reopen, along with one lane in each direction on 56th Avenue reopening.

Bridges Inc., of Newton, is the prime contractor on the $640,000 project, which is expected to be complete by late January 2024.

Scare away bacteria with these ideas on keeping goodies safe

&nbsp;Temperatures are dropping and leaves are falling which means Halloween is quickly approaching. While the holiday is not always thought to be overly risky in terms of food safety, any time perishable foods are left out can be a nightmare.

“Perishable foods such as meat and cheese trays, pasta dishes or finger sandwiches should be kept in a refrigerator until the party starts,” said Karen Blakeslee, Kansas State University food scientist and coordinator of K-State’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/">Rapid Response Center</a>.

Blakeslee shared tips on how to keep party food safe to eat:

● Arrange food on small platters so you can refrigerate and rotate food within two hours.

● Use party tray lids as coolers by filling them with ice and setting the trays on top.

● Store treats that need to be hot or cold. They should not be left out at room temperature for longer than two hours. &nbsp;● Wait until the dough and batters are fully cooked before taste testing. Say no to raw dough as uncooked flour has been linked to foodborne illness outbreaks. ● Beware of unpasteurized juice or cider, as it can contain harmful bacteria such as&nbsp;coli&nbsp;O157:H7 or&nbsp;Salmonella.

“Wash your hands before preparing food and keep raw meats away from ready to eat foods to prevent cross contamination,” Blakeslee said.

When planning a Halloween bash, keep in mind food allergies. To avoid allergic reactions, Blakeslee suggests asking guests beforehand if they have any food allergies. Keep in mind that sesame is now the ninth major food that can trigger allergic reactions, she said.

Trick-or-treating can be a sticky situation if candy is not thoroughly inspected. “Parents should examine the treats to avoid any tricks that may be in their bags. If any treats are damaged or open, discard them,” Blakeslee said.

When gathering treats to hand out, consider non-food items for kids with food allergies.

For parents, Blakeslee had another piece of advice to make Halloween a treat – and not a trick. “Give your goblins a meal or snack before trick-or-treating to fuel them through the fun,” she said.

Blakeslee publishes a monthly newsletter called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/newsletter/">You Asked It!</a>&nbsp;that provides numerous tips on being safe and healthy. Authorities have confirmed the arrest of Demetrius Jones, 34, wanted in Columbia, South Carolina on a murder allegation. Junction City Police Chief John&nbsp; Lamb said Jones was arrested by police following a flock camera system alert that led to a traffic stop off of U.S. 77 in the 100 block of West 8th Street Wednesday morning.

Jones is incarcerated in the Geary County Detention Center. According to authorities there was a shooting incident in Columbia that led to the death of one person and injury to a second.

Lamb explained that JCPD has 11 cameras in their flocking system which can read license plates on vehicles and then run the information through the National Crime Information Center, and on local warrants as well. The cameras are located near various entrances to the community. They were installed early this summer.

Lamb confirmed there plans to add 12 more cameras to the system in Junction City in the future.

The vehicles collided.&nbsp;.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged rape.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, police arrested 19-year-old Trenton Bunnell of Kansas City Tuesday afternoon on a Riley County District Court warrant for rape. 

The original charge was reported in July 2022. Bunnell. He remains jailed&nbsp; on a bond of $75,000.

Suspect in  alleged 2022 rape jailed in Manhattan

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a car theft in Manhattan.

Just after 9p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for motor vehicle theft in the 1100 block of Bluemont Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 38-year-old man reported an unknown suspect took his black Kia Forte with a black Glock 19 and two magazines inside. 

Police did not report an estimated total loss associated with this case.
