Geary County Fire announced that about 8:18 Sunday morning they respsonded to a grass fire, possibly threatening a structure with animals inside.

Upon arrival, units were able to keep the fire to two wood piles and away from any structures.

Over the last three years, an ongoing outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has threatened poultry flocks in Kansas and across the nation, primarily spread by wild waterfowl. The fall again brought a resurgence of the virus detected in wild birds across the state, and this month several backyard poultry flocks in Kansas were confirmed with cases of HPAI.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture reminds poultry owners that the threat of exposure to susceptible birds in Kansas is high. Anyone involved with poultry production, from the small backyard chicken owner to the large commercial producer, should review their biosecurity activities to assure the health of their birds. This virus is primarily being transmitted by wild waterfowl such as ducks and geese which are migrating through this region. The best thing poultry owners can do to protect their birds is to eliminate possible exposure to wild migratory birds and their habitat. This can take many forms, including cleaning your boots/clothing after walking near ponds and lakes populated with wild birds, keeping your poultry in an enclosure which wild birds can’t enter, and staying away from sick or dead wild birds.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza is a highly contagious viral disease that can infect chickens, gamebirds, turkeys, and other birds and can cause severe illness and/or sudden death in infected birds. This outbreak has seen illness and mortality in a wider scope of bird species than past outbreaks, including wild and domestic waterfowl. Attentively monitor your birds for symptoms of HPAI which include: coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, and other signs of respiratory distress; lack of energy and appetite; decreased water consumption; decreased egg production and/or soft-shelled, misshapen eggs; incoordination; and diarrhea. Avian influenza can also cause sudden death in birds even if they aren’t showing other symptoms.

If these symptoms are observed in your birds, immediately contact your veterinarian. If you don’t have a regular veterinarian, contact KDA’s Division of Animal Health office toll-free at 833-765-2006.&nbsp;

HPAI is not a food safety concern; birds and eggs from infected flocks do not enter the food system. As a reminder, the proper handling and cooking of all poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165 ˚F is recommended as a general food safety precaution. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the public health risk for HPAI is low.

As part of existing avian influenza response plans, federal and state partners are working jointly on additional surveillance and testing in areas around the affected flocks. The United States has the strongest avian influenza surveillance program in the world, and USDA is working with its partners to actively look for the disease in commercial poultry operations and live bird markets and in migratory wild bird populations.

The smell of oven-fresh bread and the conversations around it have defined Cindy Falk’s career for 40 years. As she retires from Kansas Wheat, Falk leaves behind a legacy built on education, outreach and a strong connection between Kansas wheat farmers and the consumers who use their product.

Falk began working with the Kansas Wheat Commission in 1985 when she received a phone call, asking her to become a volunteer Speak for Wheat spokesperson. That role grew into a full-time career focused on promoting wheat foods, home baking and science-based nutrition through classrooms, fairs, test kitchens and national organizations.

A central part of Falk’s work was the Kansas Wheat Commission recipe booklet. Beginning in 1988, she contributed to 37 editions, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1966. The booklets became a widely recognized Kansas Wheat resource, distributed across Kansas and nationally to represent wheat farmers and Kansas agriculture.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this job, or I wouldn’t have continued for 40 years,” Falk said. “That one phone call truly changed my life.”

In addition to her work in Kansas, Falk played a major role in domestic wheat promotion through her leadership with the Wheat Foods Council. As public perceptions of grain foods shifted and fad diets gained attention, her priority continued to be science-based education and accurate nutrition information.

Raised on her grandparents’ wheat farm near Laclede, Kan., Falk brought a personal understanding of agriculture to every outreach effort. Whether working the Kansas State Fair booth or welcoming international visitors into the test kitchen, her goal was to help consumers better understand where wheat comes from.

“Consumers want to hear from the wheat farmer,” Falk said. “People like to ask questions and learn directly from the people involved.”

One of Falk’s most visible accomplishments was helping grow the Kansas Festival of Breads into the National Festival of Breads. What began as a state baking contest evolved into the nation’s only amateur yeast bread competition, drawing hundreds of entries from nearly every state and thousands of attendees during its in-person years in Manhattan. 

The event paired baking with education, giving finalists the opportunity to tour wheat farms, ride in combines during harvest and visit mills and elevators. Those experiences helped turn bakers into ambassadors for wheat and Kansas agriculture. The contest has continued as a fully remote baking competition. Participants submit recipes via email, and recipe testing and judging are conducted at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center in Manhattan, Kan.

 </figure>A central part of Falk’s work was the Kansas Wheat Commission recipe booklet. Beginning in 1988, she contributed to 37 editions, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1966. The booklets became a widely recognized Kansas Wheat resource, distributed across Kansas and nationally to represent wheat farmers and Kansas agriculture.“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this job, or I wouldn’t have continued for 40 years,” Falk said. “That one phone call truly changed my life.”In addition to her work in Kansas, Falk played a major role in domestic wheat promotion through her leadership with the Wheat Foods Council. As public perceptions of grain foods shifted and fad diets gained attention, her priority continued to be science-based education and accurate nutrition information.Raised on her grandparents’ wheat farm near Laclede, Kan., Falk brought a personal understanding of agriculture to every outreach effort. Whether working the Kansas State Fair booth or welcoming international visitors into the test kitchen, her goal was to help consumers better understand where wheat comes from.“Consumers want to hear from the wheat farmer,” Falk said. “People like to ask questions and learn directly from the people involved.”One of Falk’s most visible accomplishments was helping grow the Kansas Festival of Breads into the National Festival of Breads. What began as a state baking contest evolved into the nation’s only amateur yeast bread competition, drawing hundreds of entries from nearly every state and thousands of attendees during its in-person years in Manhattan. The event paired baking with education, giving finalists the opportunity to tour wheat farms, ride in combines during harvest and visit mills and elevators. Those experiences helped turn bakers into ambassadors for wheat and Kansas agriculture. The contest has continued as a fully remote baking competition. Participants submit recipes via email, and recipe testing and judging are conducted at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center in Manhattan, Kan. The Geary County Sheriff's Office reported that at 0508 a.m. Friday Deputies responded to a single vehicle injury accident. Samantha Ott of Junction City, KS was traveling north on K-177 HWY in her 2013 Honda Civic when a coyote entered the highway. Samantha was able to evade the coyote, however, she swerved off the road and into a ditch causing disabling damage to her vehicle.

Throughout the year, residents, organizations, schools, and businesses are invited to participate in activities that celebrate the enduring American spirit and the stories that unite the community.

To officially launch the year of celebration, the Riley County Commission will consider an America 250 proclamation during its regular meeting on January 5, followed by consideration of a similar proclamation by the&nbsp;Manhattan&nbsp;City Commission at its regular meeting on January 6.

The local America 250 committee, led by Visit&nbsp;Manhattan, is working in partnership with community organizations, educators, cultural institutions, businesses, and volunteers, to provide leadership and coordination for community-wide commemorative efforts.&nbsp;

“America 250 offers a meaningful opportunity for our community to come together to reflect on our national history and the stories that make&nbsp;Manhattan&nbsp;and Riley County unique,” said Marcia Rozell, Director of Visit&nbsp;Manhattan.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage driven by John Franklin&nbsp;Harris, 68, St. George, was northbound on Tuttle Creek Boulevard crossing the intersection of Bluemont Street. The car struck a pedestrian identified as Thalonda Marie&nbsp;Lashley, 45, Junction City,&nbsp;who was wearing dark clothing and walking north in the driving lane of Tuttle Creek Boulevard.

Lashley was transported to&nbsp;Via Christi-Manhattan where she was pronounced deceased.&nbsp; Harris was not injured and properly restrained, according to the KHP.

RILEY COUNTY —The Kansas HIghway Patrol is investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred just after 9:30p.m. Tuesday in Riley County.

The Patrol reported a vehicle was northbound on Tuttle Creek Boulevard crossing the intersection of Bluemont Street. The vehicle struck a pedestrian who was wearing dark clothing and walking north in the driving lane of Tuttle Creek Boulevard.

The Army announced that due to the 1st Infantry Division’s block leave period, pharmacy operations at Farrelly Health Clinic will temporarily consolidate staff to the Irwin Army Community Hospital Main Pharmacy. 

As a result, the Farrelly Health Clinic pharmacy will be closed from Dec. 22, 2025 through Jan. 2, 2026, and will reopen on Jan. 5, 2026.

• All active-duty servicemembers should fill prescriptions at the IACH Main Pharmacy.

• All other ancillary services and outpatient care at Farrelly Health Clinic will remain open and available as scheduled.

This temporary consolidation ensures continued pharmacy support for the Fort Riley community during the block leave period.

After more than four decades of service to public safety, Chief Ronnie D. Grice, Assistant Vice President for University Police and Public Safety, will retire from Kansas State University on April 1, 2026.

<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/rsv/index.html">Respiratory syncytial virus</a>, more commonly known as RSV, sends thousands of young children to the hospital each year, and treatment options remain limited. New research from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/">Kansas State University</a>&nbsp;is helping address and mitigate the effects of the troublesome virus.

<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/academics/dmp/faculty-staff/faculty/baral/">Pankaj Baral</a>, associate professor of immunology in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/academics/dmp/">Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology</a>, and doctoral student Sandeep Adhikari recently published a paper in the journal&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>&nbsp;detailing the role of the beta-adrenergic signaling pathway in RSV infections.

Using an animal model of RSV infection, the researchers tested how a drug that targets a common airway adgregenic receptor affects infection and inflammation.

How the nervous system helps young lungs fight RSV

The sympathetic nervous system is a critical aspect of the body-brain connection and organismic defense. These neurons are involved in the "fight-or-flight" response and secrete neurotransmitter norepinephrine, which binds to beta-adrenergic receptors in smooth muscle and immune cells.

 of the nervous system in antiviral immunity during early-life infections is not well understood,” Baral said. “Our study produces insight into the role of sympathetic neurons and beta-2 adrenergic receptor signaling in promoting antiviral defense mechanisms during neonatal infection with RSV, a respiratory virus that causes mild to severe infections in young children and animals.”

The virus is the most common cause of infection and other acute respiratory disorders in children under 5 years of age, Baral said, although RSV can occasionally be problematic for older people and animals.

RSV infections are characterized by lung inflammation, viral expansion and destruction of airway barriers, so it’s critically important to find ways to inhibit infections from occurring.

“It is unknown whether beta-adrenergic signaling can regulate antiviral immunity during early-life infections,” Baral said. “In our research, we find that stimulation of adrenergic signaling via Beta-2-adrenergic agonist increases viral clearance and anti-inflammatory responses, two major aspects of antiviral immunity.”

Beta-2-adrenergic agonists, also known as beta agonists, are widely used Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs for bronchodilation in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Despite being a commonly used drug, its immune regulatory and antiviral potential in viral infection is less understood. While more research is needed before the findings can influence patient care, Baral's work opens the door to new ways of protecting infants during their most vulnerable months.

“Our study generates a proof-of-concept regarding the potential therapeutic role of beta-2 agonist for improving disease morbidity and viral clearance during RSV infections,” Adhikari said. “Our findings are significant as current monoclonal antibody therapies and maternal vaccines do not provide long-term protection against RSV.”

“It’s a significant recognition of our graduate program that a graduate student-led study got published in one of the most prestigious and high-impact journals,” said T.G. Nagaraja, program director of the doctoral pathobiology program in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

This newly published work was supported by funding from the American Lung Association, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Heart Association to the Baral Laboratory. The research article is titled, “<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-66401-8">β2-adrenergic signaling controls neonatal respiratory syncytial virus infection by promoting viral clearance and airway protection</a>,” in the Dec. 18. issue of Nature Communications.

New research from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/">Kansas State University</a>&nbsp;is helping address and mitigate the effects of the troublesome virus.<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/academics/dmp/faculty-staff/faculty/baral/">Pankaj Baral</a>, associate professor of immunology in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/academics/dmp/">Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology</a>, and doctoral student Sandeep Adhikari recently published a paper in the journal&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>&nbsp;detailing the role of the beta-adrenergic signaling pathway in RSV infections.Using an animal model of RSV infection, the researchers tested how a drug that targets a common airway adgregenic receptor affects infection and inflammation.<h2>How the nervous system helps young lungs fight RSV</h2>The sympathetic nervous system is a critical aspect of the body-brain connection and organismic defense. These neurons are involved in the "fight-or-flight" response and secrete neurotransmitter norepinephrine, which binds to beta-adrenergic receptors in smooth muscle and immune cells.“The role&nbsp; of the nervous system in antiviral immunity during early-life infections is not well understood,” Baral said. “Our study produces insight into the role of sympathetic neurons and beta-2 adrenergic receptor signaling in promoting antiviral defense mechanisms during neonatal infection with RSV, a respiratory virus that causes mild to severe infections in young children and animals.”The virus is the most common cause of infection and other acute respiratory disorders in children under 5 years of age, Baral said, although RSV can occasionally be problematic for older people and animals.RSV infections are characterized by lung inflammation, viral expansion and destruction of airway barriers, so it’s critically important to find ways to inhibit infections from occurring.A familiar asthma drug shows new promise“It is unknown whether beta-adrenergic signaling can regulate antiviral immunity during early-life infections,” Baral said. “In our research, we find that stimulation of adrenergic signaling via Beta-2-adrenergic agonist increases viral clearance and anti-inflammatory responses, two major aspects of antiviral immunity.”Beta-2-adrenergic agonists, also known as beta agonists, are widely used Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs for bronchodilation in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.Despite being a commonly used drug, its immune regulatory and antiviral potential in viral infection is less understood. While more research is needed before the findings can influence patient care, Baral's work opens the door to new ways of protecting infants during their most vulnerable months.“Our study generates a proof-of-concept regarding the potential therapeutic role of beta-2 agonist for improving disease morbidity and viral clearance during RSV infections,” Adhikari said. “Our findings are significant as current monoclonal antibody therapies and maternal vaccines do not provide long-term protection against RSV.”“It’s a significant recognition of our graduate program that a graduate student-led study got published in one of the most prestigious and high-impact journals,” said T.G. Nagaraja, program director of the doctoral pathobiology program in the College of Veterinary Medicine.This newly published work was supported by funding from the American Lung Association, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Heart Association to the Baral Laboratory.
