JUNCTION CITY, Kansas - Junction City Main Street has announced the dates for their 2nd Annual Taste of Culture Events: Cups of Culture and International Food Tour. These two events are centered around Junction City’s diversity that fuels our amazing community! The International Food Tour will run in conjunction with Main Street Market’s kick-off on Saturday, May 3rd, from 10:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. and will be hosted at the corner of 9th and Washington St., 901 N Washington St. Cups of Culture, a 21+ event, will run from 5-8 P.M., on Friday, May 9th throughout Downtown Junction City. 

The Cups of Culture event engages community members in familiarizing themselves with the amazing businesses Downtown Junction City has to offer, all while sampling diverse adult beverages and snacks from around the world! Participants will check-in from 5-6 P.M. at Junction City Main Street at 129 W 7th Street and will receive a special commemorative cup and Downtown JC map of participating storefronts. 

As for the International Food Tour, the event will highlight and celebrate the cultural diversity that Junction City boasts. Attendees will purchase a “passport” that gives them access to each of the local food vendors that will represent different global cuisines. With their “passports” in hand, attendees will travel from each vendor, earning them a travel stamp and a delicious sample to delight their taste buds. This year, there will be performances, music, and arts and crafts booths for kids!

TOPEKA, Kan. – Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland is encouraging jobseekers and employers across the state to participate in the upcoming Statewide Virtual Job Fair, hosted by KANSASWORKS, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 23.

“Kansas employers across the state have plentiful good-paying opportunities for jobseekers with any level of work experience,” Toland said. “The number of companies expanding in Kansas or relocating here brings new career options for all Kansans to take advantage of, including recent graduates of our outstanding higher education system.”

The virtual event offers jobseekers the opportunity to fill out applications, chat live and conduct video interviews with participating employers.

The online portal also provides resources such as a jobseeker training video, a list of participating employers, and access for attendees to register and log in. Jobseekers are encouraged to dress professionally, as employers may initiate video interviews during the fair.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – A Kansas 4-H official is praising the work of volunteers across the state, indicating that their contribution to the state’s largest youth leadership program is vital to the development of many Kansas kids. Sarah Maass, director of the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/">Kansas 4-H program</a>, said there were approximately 4,196 adult volunteers who helped with various 4-H activities during the most recently completed program year.“Volunteers play a crucial role in program delivery and advocacy of our extension and 4-H programs,” Maass said. “Our organization would not be where it is today without the work and support of our volunteer&nbsp;base.”

Maass cited a previous study reporting that volunteers donate an average nine hours per month, which translates to 37,764 volunteers hours in Kansas. According to Independent Sector – a coalition of nonprofits, foundations and corporate giving programs – the value of one volunteer hour in the United States is $33.49. Doing the math, the contribution of volunteers to the Kansas 4-H program during the past program year topped $1.26 million.

Recognizing that impact, the Kansas 4-H program is joining in National Volunteer Week, a national celebration for non-profit groups set for April 20-26 to recognize the contributions of those who donate their time to worthy causes team. 

Richard Becker of Manhattan became a 4-H volunteer in 2005 when his children enrolled in the program. Since then, he has become a Level II certified rifle and pistol instructor, helping to train other instructors in the 4-H Shooting Sports program.“4-H promotes positive youth development, no matter the activity,” Becker said. “I can’t think of a greater cause then to invest in our youth, who will be tomorrow’s leaders. There are so many friendships to be made locally, at the state level and even nationally.”&nbsp;

Nonprofit organizations can view and select items on April 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Community members can view and select items on April 28-29 from 5 to 7 p.m. The giveaway will take place at the Unger Complex, located at 2323 Anderson Avenue. Please enter through the main entrance on Anderson Avenue, where you will be guided to the viewing area. Parking will be free for the duration of the viewing times.

Any items chosen must be picked up at the time of selection. Limited dollies and furniture-moving equipment will be available. Individuals are encouraged to bring tools, as some furniture may need to be disassembled for transport. Nick Perez has resigned as the head basketball coach at Junction City High School. Junction City High School Athletic Director Chris Bogenhagen has confirmed Perez's resignation.

Perez led the Blue Jay program for nine years.

Perez's team in 2022-2023 made it to the 6A State Tournament in Wichita. His best team, record-wise, was the 2023-2024 team that posted an 18-3 record and won the Centennial League for the first time in school history. This past season, JC finished the year with a record of 14-8 and lost in the sub-state championship game.

Valley View Senior Life hosts an Easter Egg Hunt and Carnival

MANHATTAN, Kan. –&nbsp;It is time to resume lawn maintenance as spring weather arrives and grass begins to grow more quickly.

Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says proper maintenance is a proactive approach to reduce weed growth and other stresses to the lawn while minimizing costs and the environmental impact.

The optimal mowing height for a home lawn depends on the type of grass, lawn use and time of year, Domenghini said.

“Mow at the high end of the recommended range for each species to improve drought resistance by encouraging deeper roots,” Domenghini said. “Only one-third of the grass leaf should be cut at a time.”

Removing more by lowering the mowing height results in physiological stress and possible heat or cold injury. If the lawn has become overgrown and needs more than one-third removed it will need to be done gradually with a few days between each mowing.

“Mowing frequency should be based on the growth rate of the lawn,” Domenghini said. She suggests not following a set schedule that may result in excessive clippings left on the grass.

“Proper timing of mowing means the grass clippings are shorter and can be returned to the&nbsp;lawn,” Domenghini said. “This contributes nitrogen back to the lawn.”

Long clippings can block sunlight to the live turf and promote disease, so they should be bagged and removed.

Maintaining a sharp blade on the mower is essential for a clean cut, Domenghini added. She said a dull mower blade tears the grass and causes the tips to turn whitish.

“Mow using a different pattern each time to prevent soil compaction and turf wear from the mower wheels. The grass blades lean the direction of the mower’s path so changing the pattern each time allows the grass to stand more upright,” Domenghini said.

Trees can be severely damaged if bumped by the mower, she warned. Even what appears to be a minor wound can result in death for the tree, so she recommends cultivating the soil surrounding trees to prevent grass and weeds from growing up close to the trunk.

Apply water in the early morning, and wait as long as possible between watering, Domenghini said. Nighttime watering promotes disease development.

“Some signs indicating that the turf needs water include darker bluish-green color, and when footprints remain in the lawn when someone walks across rather than leaf blades bouncing back in place,” Domenghini said. “Soak the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches and wait for signs that more water is needed.”

Fertilize only to maintain a moderately green color during favorable weather and minimally or not at all during times of weather stress, Domenghini said.

Over-fertilizing increases the water and mowing requirements. Domenghini suggests not fertilizing when heavy rain is expected, and never dump excess fertilizer into storm drains or sewers.

Brimhall's appointment as Poet-in-Residence at the Guggenheim, in partnership with the Academy of American Poets, acknowledges her contributions as a poet and educator, bridging poetry and the arts.&nbsp;"I'm ecstatic to join the Guggenheim this year and plan programming that unites the visual and literary arts!" says Brimhall. "There will be several parts of the residency, including poetry postcards for all museum patrons, activities in the Guggenheim’s Aye Simon Reading Room and staged evening events in the fall."

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating an alleged assault in Manhattan.

Just before 8:30p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report of aggravated assault in the 700 block of Colorado Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.. &nbsp;

A 31-year-old man reported that a 41-year-old man armed himself with a sledge hammer during an incident, placing the victim in fear of harm.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating an alleged assault in Manhattan.Just before 8:30p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report of aggravated assault in the 700 block of Colorado Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.. &nbsp;A 31-year-old man reported that a 41-year-old man armed himself with a sledge hammer during an incident, placing the victim in fear of harm.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. According to a Fort Riley release Soldiers and military working equines of Fort Riley’s 1st Infantry Divisision will have the distinct honor of presenting the nation’s colors at both the 151st Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby. The former race is run on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby. The Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard has been training rigorously to prepare for these events.

The unit’s horses are conditioned to remain calm in high-energy environments through a unique training regimen. Their fellow warriors at Fort Riley play a role in this process, conducting desensitization drills that include physical training sessions on Custer Hill, where units work together to acclimate the horses to loud crowds and movement. Additionally, the unit collaborates with Big Red One aviation units, coordinating flyovers to ensure the horses remain steady under the roar of passing aircraft.&nbsp;These horses serve as living symbols of the division’s history, pride, and unwavering commitment to duty.

&nbsp;Officers from the Junction City Police Department and Geary County Sheriff’s Office executed search warrants at residences located on the 1100 block of Haven Drive and the 2200 block of Thompson Drive at approximately 5:30 PM Wednesday.&nbsp; The JCPD said these warrants were the culmination of a several-month-long narcotics investigation.

During the execution of the search warrants, officers seized approximately 1.25 pounds of methamphetamine, as well as quantities of cocaine, marijuana, fentanyl, approximately $17,000 in U.S. currency, and three firearms. One of the firearms recovered had been reported stolen.

Mashaun J. Baker, a 39-year-old man from Junction City, was arrested as a direct result of this investigation. Baker faces charges including distribution of certain stimulants, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to manufacture a controlled substance, taxation; drugs (no drug tax stamp for marijuana or controlled substances), unlawful acquisition of proceeds from drug transactions, and possession of stolen property

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Narcotics investigation leads to an arrest

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a November shooting in Manhattan have made three arrests.

According to the Riley County Police Department daily booking report, 17-year-old&nbsp;Dontaivious Temple; 39-year-old Katrece Johnson both of Manhattan and 21-year-old Dontreveon McGlory of Topeka were booked into jail on April 9 in connection with a shooting in the&nbsp;&nbsp;2000 block of College Heights Road.

Johnson is being held on&nbsp;$1 million dollar bond on requested charges of  attempted murder in the first-degree;  criminal damage to property; unlawful discharge of a firearm in city limits;  contributing to a child’s misconduct and aggravated endangering a child

Temple is being held at the&nbsp;North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center on requested charges of&nbsp;attempted murder in the 1st degree;&nbsp;criminal damage to property; unlawful discharge of a firearm in city limits and criminal discharge of firearm, according to the arrest report.&nbsp;

McGlory is still in custody on a $1 million dollar bond on requested charges that include&nbsp;of attempted murder in the 1st degree; criminal damage to property; unlawful discharge of a firearm in city limits, criminal discharge of firearm and contributing to a child’s misconduct, according to the arrest report.

On April 3, police arrested Victor Fuentes Jr, 20, of California was arrested for his Riley County warrant for two counts of attempted murder in the 1st degree, Aggravated Robbery, aggravated endangering a child, contributing to child misconduct, three counts of criminal damage to property, and criminal discharge of a firearm in connection with the crime. He remains jailed on a $750,000.00 bond.

Also on April 3, Delron Tyree, 17, of Topeka, was arrested for his Riley County warrant for 2 counts of attempted murder in the 1st degree, three counts of criminal damage to property, criminal use of a weapon, and criminal discharge of a firearm in connection with the crime. Tyree is being held without bond.
