Verlan Claire “Pee Wee” Covalt, age 90 of Riley, passed away Monday, May 1, 2023 at Stoneybrook Retirement Community in Manhattan.
He was born on June 8, 1932 in Morland, Kansas, the son of William Isaac and Myrtle Viola (Swisher) Covalt. He was baptized in the Morland United Methodist Church.
He married Patricia Louise Clark on June 11, 1955 at the Hill City United Methodist Church. They were married for 67 years.
Verlan was a mechanic and parts man for the Ford Dealer Lewis Motor Company for 13 years. He then worked for 30 years as a pipeliner for Mobil Oil Pipeline Company, retiring on May 1, 1993. He was a member of the Riley United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge Texas #445, Masonic Lodge Clay Center #134 and many Square Dance Clubs around the world.
Verlan and Patty travelled to all 50 states and 11 countries. He was a collector of anything and everything. He loved telling stories, fishing and decorating for the holidays.
He is survived by his wife Patty of the home; his three daughters, Juanita Covalt of Dansville, Michigan, Charlene Mitoska (Jim) of Leonardville and Phyllis Konen (Tim) of Dansville, Michigan; two sisters, Wilma Bean of St. Joseph, Michigan and Delpha Melton of Ordway, Colorado; six grandchildren, Anthony Mitoska (Karen), Andrew Mitoska, Brandi Pennell (Wes), Travis Konen (Kimberly), Alex Mitoska (Micayla) and Alyssa Mitoska; nine great grandchildren, Rileigh Mitoska, Trevor Lindley, Amelia Mitoska, Parker Cahill, Trinity Pennell, Izzabelle Pennell, Payton Mitoska, Mason Mitoska and Leighton Mitoska, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings, Ruth Doubleday, Pauline Morgan, Roy Covalt, Wehrle Covalt, Esther Stevenson, Charles Covalt and Betty Lou Covalt.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2023 at the Riley United Methodist Church with Pastors Bruce and Sandy Ferguson officiating. Inurnment will be in the Hill City Cemetery at a later date.
A memorial has been established for the Riley United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.
