Steven Gene Thornton was born in Salinas, California on April 14, 1954 to Lester and Marie. After High School Steve joined the United States Navy, served on the USS Proteus, was deployed to Guam like his Father, and was honorably discharged to begin a career as a firefighter.On April 5, 1986, he married Mary Ann Davalos. When an opportunity to continue his career in Kansas at Fort Riley became available, Steve and Mary Ann decided to make Abilene, Kansas their home.In the early 2000’s, Steve began to feel the effects of Parkinson’s Disease. He was forced to retire from the career he loved, and would spend most of his time with Mary Ann, visiting his parents and taking daily trips to the local park to let his beloved dogs run.
Steve is survived by his wife Mary Ann, his mother Marie, brothers Dennis and David and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Lester.
Services will be held on November 11 at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Abilene. A memorial has been established to benefit Neighbor to Neighbor -Abilene.
