Herbert "Herb" Eugene Small, a cherished member of the Junction City community, passed away peacefully with his family on January 7, 2026, his 95th birthday, in Manhattan, Kansas. Born on January 7, 1931, in Junction City, he lived a full life defined by his unwavering love for family, his dedication to his community, and his remarkable career.

After serving honorably in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1954, Herb began a 35-year journey as a delivery driver for Rainbow Bread Co., where he became well-known among his customers as "Smiling Small." His infectious personality, sprinkled with humor and warmth, left a lasting impression on those he encountered. With a fondness for food that earned him the affectionate nickname "The Eating Machine," Herb delighted in sharing not just meals but also moments of joy and laughter.

Herb’s personal life was marked by his dedication to family. He married Dona A. Gormley on December 7, 1957, in Junction City, Kansas. Together, they built a legacy of love and togetherness that remains a source of pride. Herb cherished the weekly lunches spent at Stoneybrook with his son, Bob, and daughter-in-law, Lynn, during his later years, where he loved to share his leftovers with the nursing staff.

A devout member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Junction City, Kansas, Herb gave back to the community in various ways. He was active in organizations such as the Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E.) Aerie 830, the American Legion Post #45, and the Elks Lodge #1037, where he even served as House Committee Chairman during his retirement. His love for golf found expression at the Junction City Country Club, and his handy-man skills often brought him to the aid of neighbors in need of small jobs.

Herb's passing leaves behind a strong family legacy. He is survived by his son, Bob (Lynn) Small; grandson, Jacob (Amanda) Small; granddaughter, Christina Swisher; great-grandchildren, Chyla, Addison, Jasmine, and Anthony; and sisters, Lola Sels, Ruby Reynolds, and Viola Schacher.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dona A. Small, on May 4, 2024; daughter, Rebecca Small, on July 3, 2025; grandson, Anthony Small, on July 5, 2020; and his parents, John R. and Martha Small. He also grieved the loss of his brothers, Aubrey Small, Ralph Small, and John Calvin Small, and his sisters, Norma Strauss and Wilma Shane.

Herb Eugene Small’s spirit lives on in the cherished memories he created with family and friends, and in the laughter he shared with those fortunate enough to know him. His devotion, friendships, and legacy will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life honoring both Herb and Dona will be planned at a later date with inurnment to follow at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery in Manhattan.
