Juneteenth will be celebrated in Manhattan for a 37th consecutive year. A proclamation has been issued.

The actual federal holiday is June 19th  but the celebration in Manhattan will be on June 13th and 14rh.

According to information from the Tuesday night city commission meeting, on Friday evening the 13th in City Park there will be a grilling contest, music and sports plus prize giveaways. On Saturday the 14th there will be the traditional Unity Walk from Longs Park to Douglas Park plus other activities.

Juneteenth is a celebration of African American freedom dating back to the time in the 1860s when slaves in Texas learned about the Emancipation Provlamation.

This will be the fourth year that Juneteenth is a federal holiday.
