Valley View Senior Life hosts an Easter Egg Hunt and Carnival

MANHATTAN, Kan. –&nbsp;It is time to resume lawn maintenance as spring weather arrives and grass begins to grow more quickly.

Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says proper maintenance is a proactive approach to reduce weed growth and other stresses to the lawn while minimizing costs and the environmental impact.

The optimal mowing height for a home lawn depends on the type of grass, lawn use and time of year, Domenghini said.

“Mow at the high end of the recommended range for each species to improve drought resistance by encouraging deeper roots,” Domenghini said. “Only one-third of the grass leaf should be cut at a time.”

Removing more by lowering the mowing height results in physiological stress and possible heat or cold injury. If the lawn has become overgrown and needs more than one-third removed it will need to be done gradually with a few days between each mowing.

“Mowing frequency should be based on the growth rate of the lawn,” Domenghini said. She suggests not following a set schedule that may result in excessive clippings left on the grass.

“Proper timing of mowing means the grass clippings are shorter and can be returned to the&nbsp;lawn,” Domenghini said. “This contributes nitrogen back to the lawn.”

Long clippings can block sunlight to the live turf and promote disease, so they should be bagged and removed.

Maintaining a sharp blade on the mower is essential for a clean cut, Domenghini added. She said a dull mower blade tears the grass and causes the tips to turn whitish.

“Mow using a different pattern each time to prevent soil compaction and turf wear from the mower wheels. The grass blades lean the direction of the mower’s path so changing the pattern each time allows the grass to stand more upright,” Domenghini said.

Trees can be severely damaged if bumped by the mower, she warned. Even what appears to be a minor wound can result in death for the tree, so she recommends cultivating the soil surrounding trees to prevent grass and weeds from growing up close to the trunk.

Apply water in the early morning, and wait as long as possible between watering, Domenghini said. Nighttime watering promotes disease development.

“Some signs indicating that the turf needs water include darker bluish-green color, and when footprints remain in the lawn when someone walks across rather than leaf blades bouncing back in place,” Domenghini said. “Soak the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches and wait for signs that more water is needed.”

Fertilize only to maintain a moderately green color during favorable weather and minimally or not at all during times of weather stress, Domenghini said.

Over-fertilizing increases the water and mowing requirements. Domenghini suggests not fertilizing when heavy rain is expected, and never dump excess fertilizer into storm drains or sewers.

Now, as the selected 2025 Poet-in-Residence at the Guggenheim New York, she can bring her visions for poetry and visual arts to life.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brimhall's appointment as Poet-in-Residence at the Guggenheim, in partnership with the Academy of American Poets, acknowledges her contributions as a poet and educator, bridging poetry and the arts.&nbsp;"I'm ecstatic to join the Guggenheim this year and plan programming that unites the visual and literary arts!" says Brimhall. "There will be several parts of the residency, including poetry postcards for all museum patrons, activities in the Guggenheim’s Aye Simon Reading Room and staged evening events in the fall."

Brimhall, the current&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/today/announcement/?id=86317">Kansas poet laureate</a>, is a nationally recognized poet and nonfiction writer. Her creative and scholarly work includes authoring five poetry collections — including the recently published "Love Prodigal" from Copper Canyon Press — more than 100 individual published poems and essays, and more than 150 readings.&nbsp;Brimhall serves as the director of K-State's creative writing program, teaching both undergraduate and graduate-level writing courses. She is recognized as an innovative and influential educator, often integrating student learning with real-life experiences. In 2024, she was awarded the title of university distinguished professor, the highest faculty title given by the university.&nbsp; &nbsp;

In addition to her work in the Big Apple, Brimhall is collaborating with the Museum of Art + Light in Manhattan, Kansas. According to a Fort Riley release Soldiers and military working equines of Fort Riley’s 1st Infantry Divisision will have the distinct honor of presenting the nation’s colors at both the 151st Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby. The former race is run on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby. The Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard has been training rigorously to prepare for these events.

The unit’s horses are conditioned to remain calm in high-energy environments through a unique training regimen. Their fellow warriors at Fort Riley play a role in this process, conducting desensitization drills that include physical training sessions on Custer Hill, where units work together to acclimate the horses to loud crowds and movement. Additionally, the unit collaborates with Big Red One aviation units, coordinating flyovers to ensure the horses remain steady under the roar of passing aircraft.&nbsp;These horses serve as living symbols of the division’s history, pride, and unwavering commitment to duty.

&nbsp;Officers from the Junction City Police Department and Geary County Sheriff’s Office executed search warrants at residences located on the 1100 block of Haven Drive and the 2200 block of Thompson Drive at approximately 5:30 PM Wednesday.&nbsp; The JCPD said these warrants were the culmination of a several-month-long narcotics investigation.

During the execution of the search warrants, officers seized approximately 1.25 pounds of methamphetamine, as well as quantities of cocaine, marijuana, fentanyl, approximately $17,000 in U.S. currency, and three firearms. One of the firearms recovered had been reported stolen.

Mashaun J. Baker, a 39-year-old man from Junction City, was arrested as a direct result of this investigation. Baker faces charges including distribution of certain stimulants, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to manufacture a controlled substance, taxation; drugs (no drug tax stamp for marijuana or controlled substances), unlawful acquisition of proceeds from drug transactions, and possession of stolen property

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Narcotics investigation leads to an arrest

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a November shooting in Manhattan have made three arrests.

According to the Riley County Police Department daily booking report, 17-year-old&nbsp;Dontaivious Temple; 39-year-old Katrece Johnson both of Manhattan and 21-year-old Dontreveon McGlory of Topeka were booked into jail on April 9 in connection with a shooting in the&nbsp;&nbsp;2000 block of College Heights Road.

Johnson is being held on&nbsp;$1 million dollar bond on requested charges of  attempted murder in the first-degree;  criminal damage to property; unlawful discharge of a firearm in city limits;  contributing to a child’s misconduct and aggravated endangering a child

Temple is being held at the&nbsp;North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center on requested charges of&nbsp;attempted murder in the 1st degree;&nbsp;criminal damage to property; unlawful discharge of a firearm in city limits and criminal discharge of firearm, according to the arrest report.&nbsp;

McGlory is still in custody on a $1 million dollar bond on requested charges that include&nbsp;of attempted murder in the 1st degree; criminal damage to property; unlawful discharge of a firearm in city limits, criminal discharge of firearm and contributing to a child’s misconduct, according to the arrest report.

On April 3, police arrested Victor Fuentes Jr, 20, of California was arrested for his Riley County warrant for two counts of attempted murder in the 1st degree, Aggravated Robbery, aggravated endangering a child, contributing to child misconduct, three counts of criminal damage to property, and criminal discharge of a firearm in connection with the crime. He remains jailed on a $750,000.00 bond.

Also on April 3, Delron Tyree, 17, of Topeka, was arrested for his Riley County warrant for 2 counts of attempted murder in the 1st degree, three counts of criminal damage to property, criminal use of a weapon, and criminal discharge of a firearm in connection with the crime. Tyree is being held without bond.

He remains jailed on a $750,000.00 bond.Also on April 3, Delron Tyree, 17, of Topeka, was arrested for his Riley County warrant for 2 counts of attempted murder in the 1st degree, three counts of criminal damage to property, criminal use of a weapon, and criminal discharge of a firearm in connection with the crime. MANHATTAN — On Kansas State University's inaugural Day of Giving, Wildcats across the world shared their pride for academic programs, student success and innovative research. More than 1,600 donors invested $3.4 million in areas across the institution, supporting students, faculty research and college initiatives.

K-State Day of Giving, a 24-hour giving challenge,&nbsp; invited the Wildcat nation to unite and share their love for the university, displaying that when Wildcats come together, we can do good for Kansas and the world.

"The tremendous outpouring of generosity we witnessed during our K-State Day of Giving reaffirms what I've always known about our university community — when called upon, our alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students respond with extraordinary heart and commitment," said President Richard Linton. "Every gift represents a personal investment in our shared future and a profound belief in our mission."

Throughout the day, K-Staters supported areas they were most passionate about. Student groups, including the Concrete Canoe team, the K-State Rodeo team and the Wildcat Rocketry team, received donations empowering student engagement and learning beyond the classroom. The Global Impact in Sorghum initiative, which conducts research to improve sorghum production techniques and introduce improved seed, saw support for its mission and used social media to share its impact with audiences. The College of Business Administration rallied funds for applied learning experiences that prepare students for careers. Other significant gifts went to All Faiths Chapel and Cats' Cupboard, a vital resource for enhancing food security at K-State.

Departments across campus competed for bonus funds through various leaderboards and challenges. The College of Business Administration led the way in total dollars raised, bringing in more than $1 million, while the Cats' Cupboard engaged the most donors to secure the top spot in the participation leaderboard with 203 donors.

K-State Day of Giving is a partnership between the university and the Kansas State University Foundation, K-State's strategic partner for philanthropy.

The Geary County Food pantry is now accepting pledges from donors interested in pledging their support and potentially benefiting from the tax credits. These pledges will show community support for the food pantry’s expansion building project and increase the likelihood that the tax credits are awarded.

The food pantry is currently fundraising for its ongoing building campaign and for the purchase of vital equipment to improve the efficiency and accessibility of its services. In addition to completing construction of the new building, planned upgrades include a walk-in cooler and freezer, reach-in coolers and freezers, a pallet jack, and other essential items. These improvements will help the pantry better serve the 1,500 individuals and families who rely on the various food programs.

Geary County is currently experiencing the highest level of food scarcity in Kansas, with 15.7% of the population and 29.2% of the children facing food insecurity. The food pantry’s mission is to provide vital resources to those in need, and these donations will help the organization continue to make a meaningful impact in the community.

The deadline to make a pledge for donation is April 15, 2025. In July, the pantry will be notified if they have been awarded the requested tax credits. All donations made through this program will directly benefit the food pantry’s capital improvements and operational upgrades.

Abilene Earns #2 Spot in USA TODAY's ﻿Best Historic Small Town Contest

City staff laid out a schedule and options on an Anderson Ave. reconstruction project to Manhattan City Commissioners this week.&nbsp;

Reconstruction could begin June 2 with outside lane closures and head to head traffic on inside lanes for two weeks. Traffic from Connecticut Ave. to Timberlane Drive would be on the north side from July 1 through the end of the year. Phased work will continue through the summer of 2027.

Traffic will be carried on the corridor through the project.

One option includes a roundabout at the intersection of Bellehaven Road and Anderson Ave. with an extension of College Ave. so Bellehaven would be realigned into the roundabout and Anderson Ave. would carry through. The second option would be a stoplight signalized intersection.

City staff are recommending the first option so there can be a calming effect on traffic in the corridor. If the project moves forward there would be a need to evaluate driveways, pedestrian crossings and right-of-way acquisition in the final design.

There were multiple concerns from area residents and property owners.

Staff will research intersection improvements and continue study and design of various options. Final action has not been taken. There will be more discussion.

This was the one year anniversary of their outlet opening in Manhattan. They also have another outlet in Junction City.

KANSAS CITY, KANSAS — The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center has received a $1 million grant from the Kansas Board of Regents to support their efforts to address the shortage of nursing students and nurses throughout the state.

The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center, based at the University of Kansas School of Nursing, is engaged in several projects designed to increase interest in nursing and boost applications to nursing schools throughout the state. The grant also will fund a comprehensive report analyzing the relationship between the nursing shortage in the state and its educational programs, providing insight into best practices and barriers for increasing nursing school applications, enrollments and licensing pass rates.

“The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center is so grateful for the support from the Board of Regents,” said Barbara MacArthur, MN, FAAN, director of the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center and a member of the faculty at KU School of Nursing. 

“By collecting data on nursing issues throughout the state, the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center has learned about the issues facing potential students as well as nurses at any stage in their career," she said. "The Kansas Nursing Pathways Project aims to increase applicants to pre-licensure nursing education programs, which is at the core of growing the nursing workforce.”

Enrollment in Kansas nursing education programs has steadily declined by 38% over the last 10 years. Additionally, a significant number of registered nurses and licensed practical nurses plan to retire in the next five years. Rural hospitals in the state are particularly vulnerable and could face closure.

“The mission of the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center aligns perfectly with the regents’ strategic plan for our state’s public higher education system,” said Blake Flanders, Ph.D., Kansas Board of Regents president and chief executive officer. “It will ensure that that our system is meeting a critical need in our state by developing a robust nursing talent pipeline and helping nurses deliver the best possible care.”

“A persistent shortage of nurses means that Kansas patients are at risk of not getting the care they need,” MacArthur said. “Potential nursing students struggle to see an educational pathway that fits their needs, and they often spend time and money filling out multiple applications. Nursing education programs have unfilled seats, and employers struggle to find nurses.”

KU School of Nursing will continue to support and house the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center throughout this initiative.

The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center was established at KU School of Nursing in August 2023 and is one of 46 in the nation focused on solving the nursing shortage issue. It is focused on using data and collaboration to address the nursing workforce shortage throughout the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We're in a transition from gasoline combustible engines to electric vehicles. That was a message to the Manhattan City Commission during a work session on Tuesday evening.

There was a presentation from the Flint Hills MPO about an electric vehicle readiness plan. No action was required but there was good information for the public.&nbsp;

There are Level 2 charging stations for home, retail and office locations, and Level 3 gas station style facilities.The average electric vehicle travel range is 284 miles. EV's have about 30% less maintenance expense.

There wee 78 million vehicles sold around the world in 2024 with 22%&nbsp; electric. There were 88,000 vehicles oversll sold in Kansas in 2024 and approximately two percent of those in the Geary, Riley, Pottawatomie county region were electric.

There is a need for Level 3 electric vehicle charging stations along I-70. There is a gap from Maple Hill to Abilene. In Junction city there are none near the interstate,&nbsp; only two stations total and one of those is private. The MPO is working with the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce to get one. Manhattan is not eligible.

Investment will be required for charging stations but those funds will drive down costs for all EV's.

One recommendation is to ensure EV charging stations are included in all new parking lots.

&nbsp;Riley County Fire District #1 was dispatched Monday afternoon&nbsp; to reports of a grass/brush fire near the intersection of Harmony Road and Dial Road in the extreme northeastern corner of Riley County. The fire began after a permitted prescribed burn spread out of control, according to the initial 911 report.&nbsp;Upon arrival, volunteer firefighters found approximately 20 acres actively burning.

Riley County Commissioners issued a disaster emergency declaration due to the fire's size and potential impact. Mutual aid was requested, and firefighting resources from Pottawatomie, Marshall, and Nemaha counties responded. The State of Kansas also deployed contracted aircraft to assist with water drops and the Dickinson County Wildland Task Force. A total of 66 personnel, 40 vehicles/apparatus, 2 planes, and 11 fire stations responded to this fire.&nbsp;

“After sunset, winds died down and firefighters were able to get a handle on the head fires in the riverbed,” said RCFD#1 Deputy Chief Doug Russell. “We’ve learned over the last few years to aggressively attack any fires in this area, requesting resources immediately. Thanks to everyone’s quick response and a favorable wind change, we were able to conduct back burns and get this fire under control.”An estimated 650 acres were burned in the Harmony Road Fire. 

No injuries were reported and no livestock were lost. In addition, no structures were threatened by the fire and no evacuations were necessary.&nbsp;Today, crews RCFD#1 crews will continue to monitor conditions and watch for areas of flare up.&nbsp;Crews from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks are also in the area working with heavy equipment to move and consolidate piles of burning brush to isolate any remaining hot spots and prevent further spread.&nbsp;“We are incredibly grateful for the assistance from neighboring counties, the State of Kansas, and our dedicated volunteer firefighters,” said Russel Stukey, Fire Chief of Riley County Fire District #1 and Director of Riley County Emergency Management. “Their quick action kept a bad situation from getting worse.”Responding Agencies include:
