The City of Manhattan has announced that beginning&nbsp;Tuesday, February 17, The Anderson Avenue project will transitioning to a new construction phase resulting in a switch in traffic control configuration.

Crews will switch traffic onto the new concrete pavement on the south side of Anderson Avenue between Connecticut Avenue and Timberlane Drive (Phase 1A) so that work can begin on the north side (Phase 1B). &nbsp;A crossover will be present just east of Timberlane Drive.

Please use extreme caution when traveling through the work zone on Anderson Avenue or find another route on&nbsp;Tuesday, February 17&nbsp;for the safety of construction crews modifying the traffic control.&nbsp;

This is a multi-phased project that will continue through the anticipated completion date in 2027. The damage estimate from a house fire Thursday at 602 Stone Ridge in Junction City has been placed in the $300,000 to $500, 000 dollar range. Fire Chief Jason Lankas noted Friday that the house is now not believed to be a total loss. It's value was listed at $1.2 million dollars.&nbsp;

The resident was identified as Sue Ann Magana.

Lankas also confirmed new information on Friday morning that the blaze began in a burn barrel on a neighbor's property and then spread through tall grass to the house that was damaged.

The fire cause has been determined to be unintentional accidental.

Assisting in battling the fire were multiple agencies including Junction City, Geary County, Fort Riley, Grandview Plaza and with a drone the Junction City Police Department.

Fire Chief Jason Lankas confirmed early Thursday evening that the fire was out. The blaze began near an outdoor shed and then spread through tall grass to the house. There were not any injuries.

The Red Cross and a State Fire Marshall's Office were called in to assist. The female resident of the house received private help.

Junction City Fire Department, Geary County Rural Fire, Fort Riley Fire, and Grandview Plaza Fire Department on Thursday worked a large house fire located just southeast of K-18 and U.S. 77 in Junction City.

As of 2:15 p.m., the fire was under control, according to Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges. Approximately 50 personnel were on scene assisting with fire suppression and overhaul operations. Firefighters expected to remain on scene for the next several hours to monitor the structure and ensure the fire is fully extinguished.

**K-18 off U.S. 77 into Junction City is currently shut down due to the fire, and to allow responding agencies to bring in water. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Several local Fire Departments worked a house fire in Junction City on Thursday

On Sunday, December 7 Sunset Zoo welcomed a new resident when Kivuli, the black-and-white colobus monkey, gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. 

Kivuli has been an excellent mother from the start, and the baby is healthy and growing steadily.At two months, the baby is starting to venture away from mom for short periods of time and munching on bits of solid food.

While born all white, his dark hair is starting to grow in as he slowly morphs into a striking, adult black-and-white colobus monkey.&nbsp;While he is meeting all his developmental milestones, this little monkey still needs a name.

Sunset Zoo is asking for the public’s help in naming our newest resident. All the options are words or names in Swahili, the most common language in Eastern and Central Africa where black-and-white colobus naturally occur. The troop’s caretakers have narrowed down the choices to three names:

Nuru (new-roo) – means “light” in Swahili, in contrast to his mother’s name, Kivuli, which means “shadow”

Kiatu (key-ah-too) – means “shoe” in Swahili, a tribute to Sunset Zoo’s recently retired director, Scott Shoemaker•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Kiongozi (key-own-go-zee) – means “leader” in Swahili, also in honor of Scott Shoemaker

A Kansas Department of Transportation project that will replace two bridges on K-63 is scheduled to begin on Monday, Feb. 16, conditions permitting. The bridges over Bartlett Creek and the Union Pacific railroad tracks are located just north of Emmett in Pottawatomie County.

New bridges will be built next to the existing structures. Traffic impacts should be minimal to none during this phase of the project, with most work taking place along the roadway’s shoulders.

Work will occur during daylight hours Monday through Friday, and Saturdays if needed.

Hawkins Construction Co., of Omaha, Nebraska, is the prime contractor on the $12.9 million project, which is anticipated to be complete in June 20.

WASHINGTON&nbsp;– U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, on Wednesday led a committee hearing with Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the VA Office of Inspector General (OIG) to discuss proposed changes to VA’s community care program, according to a media release from the Senator's office.

In December 2025, VA issued the Community Care Network Next Generation Request for Proposals (CCN NextGen RFP), which aims to modernize the delivery of care in the community, increase competition and innovation within VA’s community care program and deliver higher quality care to veterans.

“In many ways, these procurements reflect a welcome focus on innovation, competition and accountability,”&nbsp;said Sen. Moran.&nbsp;“They also signal long-overdue progress toward upholding industry standards, embracing value-based care, strengthening program integrity and addressing persistent challenges—such as the timely return of medical documentation—that have frustrated veterans, providers and policymakers alike.”

This is the first major acquisition effort to support VA’s community care program since the passage of the&nbsp;MISSION Act&nbsp;in 2018. The proposed CCN Next Gen RFP contracts would not change underlying veteran eligibility for community care.

“These contracts must do more than look good on paper,”&nbsp;continued Sen. Moran.&nbsp;“Instead, they must deliver results for veterans, VA staff, community care providers and taxpayers by leading to real, measurable improvements in access, choice, outcomes and costs.”

Four refined concepts were provided within the 60-foot right-of-way between storefronts on Moro that generally feature angled parking on one side of the street, a 20-foot driving lane, and the potential for mid-block pedestrian crossings and other landscaping and pedestrian amenities.

Mayor Susan Adamcheck summarized some of the ideas from the commission including parking on the north with access to a remaining public parking lot, carry through consistency from nearby North Manhattan Avenue and 12th Street, and a desire for some amenities.

Staff anticipates returning to the City Commission with a recommended delivery approach, and a more detailed 30% design of the project with updated cost estimates for the two-block project.&nbsp;

Other points also ranged from the reduction of parking spaces in the two blocks of Moro to the need for a parking lot on the east end. There was&nbsp; also a note that Aggieville is due for a parking upgrade.&nbsp;

Ice College of Engineering</a>, effective Aug. 2.“Dr. Khokhar brings exceptional leadership experience, growth-minded vision and high-quality teaching, research&nbsp;and engagement&nbsp;to K-State in the role of dean for the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering,” said Jesse Perez Mendez, provost and executive vice president.&nbsp;“I look forward to working with him to advance the college and university’s strategic vision.”

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that the Manhattan Housing Authority in Manhattan, Kansas has been placed under HUD Monitorship after being formally declared in Substantial Default for failing to comply with the terms of its federally-mandated Recovery Agreement, according to a media release from HUD.&nbsp;

This action reflects Secretary Scott Turner’s commitment to staunchly enforcing accountability across the public housing system and ensuring that federal housing dollars are managed prudently and in the best interests of the American people.

“HUD is restoring accountability to Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) nationwide,”&nbsp;said Deputy Secretary Andrew Hughes. “Gone are the days where mismanagement, waste, and dysfunction are acceptable. HUD will use this opportunity to restore trust with tenants of the Manhattan Housing Authority, offering the stability needed to succeed.”

HUD determined that the Manhattan Housing Authority repeatedly failed to correct identified deficiencies despite clear notice, extensive technical assistance, and multiple opportunities to achieve compliance. Based on these findings of noncompliance, HUD exercised its statutory authority to impose Monitorship and require direct federal oversight of the Housing Authority’s operations.

Under the Monitorship, HUD-appointed Cure Monitors will oversee the Manhattan Housing Authority’s operations and track all required remedial actions to ensure compliance with recovery milestones. Oversight includes enhanced reviews of all procurement activities, financial controls, and even program administration. Failure to demonstrate timely and sustained progress may result in further enforcement actions, up to and including full HUD possession. This action is corrective in nature and intended to restore compliance and operational integrity.

KDHE launches Travel & Health webpage ahead of FIFA World Cup 

Riley County, KS – February 9, 2026) The Riley County Appraiser’s Office has completed its required studies and analysis for 2026 property valuations. Change of Value Notices (CVNs) will be mailed to property owners on February 25.

CVNs show how a property’s value has changed from the previous year. Changes may be due to shifts in the local real estate market or updates made to individual properties, such as additions, removals, renovations, or classification changes.

In 2025, the average price of all valid home sales in Riley County was $301,998, compared to $275,000 in 2024 and $265,000 in 2023. The median home price in 2025 was $270,000, up from $250,000 in 2024 and $238,000 in 2023.

Riley County Appraiser Anna Burson said the median price is often a better measure of market trends.

“The median price is a more reliable reference point because it is less affected by unusually high or low sales,” Burson said.

&nbsp; Based on current market data, residential property values show an overall average increase of 3% to 10%. Commercial property values are trending upward by 2% to 6% on average. Individual property values may vary and may not follow these general trends due to property-specific changes, data corrections, or market activity within a particular area.

As in previous years, the CVN mailing will include a form for property owners who wish to appeal their valuation. To meet Kansas statute requirements, appeal forms must be fully completed, signed, and returned to the Riley County Appraiser’s Office within 30 days of the mailing date. Appeal request forms may be emailed, dropped off, or mailed with postmark no later than March 26th.

Just after 3a.m. Vital met the requirement of a $2,000 bond and is no longer in custody.

He is in his first season as a graduate student manager at K-State, according to his online bio. Vital was a three-time All-Big 12 selection and a member of Baylor’s 2021 National Championship team where K-State head coach Jerome Tang was an assistant.&nbsp; Vital is working towards a master’s in counseling and student development at K-State.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for alleged theft.

Just after 4p.m. Thursday police arrested 38-year-old&nbsp;Kelli Wilson of Salina in the 400 block of E. Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Wilson was arrested on a Pottawatomie County District Court warrant for one count of theft by threat; $1,500 or less from three businesses in 72 hours. 

This arrest stems from an original report filed in November 2025. Wilson is being held in the Pottawatomie County Jail.
