Vernon Lee "Shorty" White, 84, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2022 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, KS. Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2022 at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Dirk Weiss officiating.
Shorty was born February 22, 1938, in Belleville, KS the son of Robert Redman and Lillian (Cibolski) White.
Shorty graduated from Belleville High School with the class of 1956 where he played football, basketball and tennis. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served from 1956 until 1960 with the Construction Battalion, known as the "Seabees", in the Aleutian Islands and Okinawa.
Shorty married his high school sweetheart Karen Reed on Christmas Day 1959 while on leave. They remained married until she passed away in 2015.
Shorty worked as an electrician at the Municipal Power Plant for the City of Belleville, KS. He later moved to Junction City, KS and worked for the Kansas Power and Light Company.
Shorty was an active sportsman and hunter. He played tennis, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, softball and baseball. He coached his kids in baseball and softball and schooled them and his nephews in tennis, basketball, and racquetball.
Survivors include two sons, Brad White and his wife Christine of Lincoln, NE and Gary White and his wife Laura of Mission, KS; one daughter, Brenda White of Mission, KS; seventeen grandchildren, Rosemary, Pierce, Priscilla and her husband Augusto, Carina, Joel, Troy, Lance, Valerie, Bethany, Andrea, Grant, Craig, Scott, Flint, Mark and Elizabeth; numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Karen; one brother and two sisters.
