Annex roof replaced with historic shingles

Late last month, work was completed to replace the shingles and flat roof at the Douglass Center Annex. Both were past their useful life — the shingles were last replaced in 1993 and the flat roof in 2001. This led to numerous leaks that caused the Annex to be closed temporarily to the public.

The City has announced that staff selected a diamond pattern shingle that mimics the style of shingle that was on the building at least as early as 1944.

The photo at the top above shows the roof as it appeared in 1976.Because the City selected this historic shingle type, it qualified for a Kansas Rehabilitation Tax Credit from the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office. The City can sell these historic tax credits to recoup some of its investment (approximately 25% of the project cost) in the project.
