National School Bus Safety Week

Posted Oct 18, 2021 9:10 PM

The Riley County Police Department encourages all drivers to be cautious and closely watch students getting on and off buses.

Police warn drivers to slow down in school zones and stop when the red lights flash to keep kids safe when traveling to and from school.

School bus drivers activate the warning lights (amber lights) prior to activating the red flashing lights and stop arm, which allows other drivers time to slow down and stop.

The driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking any stopped school bus from either direction must stop before reaching the bus when the flashing red lights are in operation.

The driver cannot proceed until the school bus resumes motion and the flashing red lights and the stop arm signal are no longer active.
