Robert A. (Bob) Holvorson, 87, of Junction City died February 5, at Geary Community Hospital after an extended residence at Valley View Senior Life. He was born February 10, 1934, in St Marys, Kansas to Art and Lorene (Uhlrig) Holvorson. Bob graduated from St Marys High School in 1952, attended Kansas State University, and worked at St Marys Radio & TV. In 1955, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served as a radar operator for two years. After leaving the service, Bob attended Emporia State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1961 and a Master of Science degree in 1966. While at Emporia State, he met Mary Lenz of Leon, Kansas, and the two were married on July 18, 1959.
Upon receiving his Bachelor’s degree, Bob accepted a teaching position at Centre High School in Lost Springs, Kansas where he taught Industrial Arts. He and Mary made their home in Herington, where in 1962, their daughter Lori was born. In 1964, Bob accepted a teaching position at Junction City High School where he designed and implemented the curriculum and equipment for the new Electronics instructional program. He continued to teach Electronics and Metal Working classes at JCHS until 1994, when he retired from teaching. In 1966, their son, Dale, was born in Junction City.
Bob was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council and maintained the grounds. He was also very active in the Kiwanis Club of Junction City, South, where he served as president in 1968. Bob was a pilot as well as an avid snow skier and bicyclist. He was active in the National Education Association and volunteered with the Open Door food pantry. He and Mary enjoyed traveling and made frequent trips to Colorado, and visited Europe, Hawaii, and Canada.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 2004. He is survived by his sister, Sherry Holvorson, of St Marys, his daughter Lori Gill of Key West, FL, his son, Dale Holvorson of Norton, and his granddaughters Michelle Holvorson of Wichita and Danyela Holvorson of Wellington.
Services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 212 N. Eisenhower Dr. in Junction City on Friday, February 11. Visitation will be from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. with the funeral service at 10:00 a.m. Gravesite service will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Belvue, KS, followed by a luncheon at Faith Lutheran in Junction City.
