Kansas Department of Insurance
Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt has announced the release of the 2025 Complaint Index of the Kansas Department of Insurance.
The report revealed that in 2025, the Department closed over 3,000 complaints falling within the six major lines of insurance: automobile, health (including HMOs), homeowners and renters, life, annuities, and long-term care.
In closing these complaints, the report showed the Consumer Assistance Division of the Department assisted in recovering nearly $29 million for Kansas consumers in 2025, a 147% increase compared to 2024.
In 2025, the largest number of complaints concerned automobile insurance (34%), homeowners and renters insurance (25%) and accident and health (18%). A large majority of total complaints (69%) concerned problems with claims handling. Other common types of complaints involved policyholder services, underwriting and marketing and sales.
“Complaints and inquiries equip the Department to hold insurance companies accountable and better serve Kansans,” said Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. “As Commissioner, I am proud to advocate on behalf of our consumers to ensure they receive the services and protections outlined in their policies.”
The Department uses complaints to help identify insurance companies or agents that may need to be investigated for violations of Kansas insurance laws or regulations, as well as to identify topics for public education efforts.
