Flood update for Riley County

UPDATE:

Poliska Lane in Manhattan has been closed due to minor flooding on Wildcat Creek, but is expected to be reopened sometime during the morning of July 16 as water levels decrease. No other roads near Wildcat Creek are expected to close.

The Flood Warning for Wildcat Creek at Scenic Dr. was in effect until Friday morning. Thursday afternoon the stage was 16.0 feet. Flood stage is 14 feet.

The river was expected to  fall below flood stage Thursday night.

Riley County and the National Weather Service provided information.

A flood warning is in effect for Wildcat Creek at Scenic Drive in Manhattan until later today.  At 7:15 AM CDT Thursday the stage was 6.1 feet. The flood stage is 14.0 feet. MINOR flooding is forecast.

* Forecast...The river is expected to rise above flood stage this  morning to a crest of 16.5 feet late this morning. It will then fall below flood stage late this afternoon.

* Impact...At 14.0 feet, flood waters reach Poliska Lane, just north of Fort Riley Boulevard.

* Impact...At 16.0 feet, flood waters begin to reach North 1200 Road, commonly known as Wildcat Creek Road.

* Impact...At 17.0 feet, The low spot in Anneberg Circle is flooded with water very close to the golf course clubhouse

The National Weather Service in Topeka KS has issued a Flood Warning for Wildcat Creek at Manhattan Scenic Drive affecting Riley County.

Riley County police provided an update on the rainfall situation in southern Riley County.

Up to three inches of rain have already fallen. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. Flooding of small creeks and streams, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage and low lying areas is expected.

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a  Flood Warning for... Northern Dickinson County in central Kansas... Geary County in east central Kansas... Southern Riley County in northeastern Kansas... Southwestern Pottawatomie County in northeastern Kansas... Southeastern Clay County in north central Kansas...

* Until 915 AM CDT.

* At 608 AM CDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated thunderstorms with heavy rain over the northern part of the area. The rain will cause flooding. Up to five and a half inches of rain have fallen in some locations again, north and east of Junction City.

* Some locations that could experience flooding include...

Manhattan, Junction City, Abilene, Ogden, Grandview Plaza, Chapman, Wakefield, Enterprise, St. George, Milford, Manchester, Talmage, Milford Lake, Moonlight, Keats and Tuttle Creek Lake.

This includes Interstate 70 between mile markers 268 and 321.

There is a flood watch in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday night.
