Milford Lake has been given a watch advisory status this week by the Kansas Department of Health & Environment.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released information telling the public that the lake is divided into three zones. This week all three zones are in a watch status for blue green algae. Zone A goes from the Milford Lake Dam to Rush Creek, Zone B from Rush Creek to Madison Creek, and Zone C from Madison Creek to the north end of the reservoir.
The Gathering Pond / Supply Lake below the dam is maintaining a watch status as well. The beach there is closed due to blue green algae inside the beach area.
The Corps said some items to remember in a watch include blue green algae may be present, use caution when contacting lake water and wash with clean water afterward, avoid areas of algae accumulation, don't let people or pets eat dried algae or drink untreated lake water.
Lake users are reminded that blue green algae may appear or disappear suddenly and move as the wind shifts, boaters should use caution and move to a clear portion of the lake.
