RCPD: School Bus caution

Posted Nov 10, 2021 12:03 PM

It is critical for drivers to be vigilant when school buses are in the area they are driving.

It only takes a second for tragedy to occur, please take time to protect our local kids.

Reminder - if you are traveling on a multi-lane roadway and a bus stops in front of you, you are required by law to stop as well and not go around the bus in the inner lane.

Obey the stop-arm signals and know the law.
Obey the stop-arm signals and know the law.
 1. The driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking any stopped school bus from either direction must stop before reaching the bus when the flashing red lights are in operation.
 2. The driving can’t proceed until the school bus resumes motion and the flashing red lights and the stop arm signal are no longer active.
 3. School bus drivers activate the warning lights (amber lights) prior to activating the red flashing lights and stop arm, which allows other drivers time to slow down and stop.
