Margaret Maxine McKinney, 89, of Alma, Kansas, died Friday, February 24, 2023, at Stoneybrook Health and Rehab in Manhattan. She was a long-time resident of the community.

Margaret was born on November 11, 1933, in rural Westmoreland, Kansas, the daughter of Lawrence and Marie (Bender) Gordon. She attended local grade schools and graduated from McFarland High School. She then attended and received an Associate Degree from Kansas State University.

Margaret worked as an insurance agent in Amarillo, Texas for a few years and thirty years as the Postmaster in Alma. She started working early and was employed at a local drugstore at the age of 12. She was an avid basketball fan and enjoyed watching as many games as possible during March Madness. She enjoyed fishing on Mill Creek and jazz music. Margaret was very compassionate and willing to help others around her, and was more than willing to help care for her mother and step-father in their declining years.

Margaret’s only son, Jason, died as a result of a freak accident on Mill Creek in 1981.

Margaret is survived by her nieces, Ardice Pennington (Larry), of Selma, Iowa, and Roxanne Sandoval (Victor) of Benseville, IL, as well as grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Marge Mondt, Frank Gordon, Dewaine Gordon, and Lauraine Dodgers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am, Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Alma. Father Swamy Nannam will be the Celebrant.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Holy Family Catholic Church, and those may be sent in care of Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at www.campanellastewart.com.
