Flint Hills Breadbasket at 905 Yuma Street will be the site for a Souper Bowl Food & Fund Drive from 10 a.m. until noon on Feb. 6.
Maribeth Kiefer, Executive Director for the Breadbasket said the event is scheduled on the Saturday before the NFL's Super Bowl. "They ( Breadbasket ) have been doing this Souper Bowl Drive for several years now." The event helps restock the shelves at the Breadbasket following the busy holiday season.
Kiefer said the event would normally be held at local grocery stores but because of COVID that is not allowed. "So we're trying to encourage people through social media to donate and then they will drive through the Flint Hills Breadbasket driveway at 905 Yuma from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 6th." It will be a contactless drive through with the food donated handed to a Breadbasket representative and then placed in boxes.
This is the first time the Breadbasket has tried a drive of this sort, and it helps stock up the food supply, explained Kiefer. "Yes we need it. We gave out this ( past ) year just for Thanksgiving an additional 45 family baskets over last year, so we've been really busy."
Manhattan residents have been strong in their support of the breadbasket, which often serves the needy, explained Kiefer. "The people of Manhattan have been very generous to help those along the way. "
The Breadbasket director noted any food items can be accepted. "Some of the items that we use a lot include macaroni and cheese, bottled juice, peanut butter, pancake mix, pancake syrup. " Kiefer added there's not many things that can't be used at the Breadbasket. "Bring what you can, buy what you can, one can makes a lot of difference. It's what you're comfortable with donating."
Those eligible to receive the food must have a Manhattan address. You can live outside the city, but you must have a Manhattan address.
