Floyd Lee Choate of Council Grove, KS, age 77, passed away on October 3, 2023, at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, KS surrounded by his family.
Floyd was born June 3, 1946, in Council Grove, Kansas, the son of Mark and Esther (Banks) Choate. He attended Council Grove Grade School and graduated from Council Grove High School in 1964. After graduation, Floyd worked for many years as a road construction worker for the State Highway Department. He married Carol (Stone) Hylton on January 16, 1964, and they were later divorced.
He had a passion for horses, he dedicated many years to raising and training all breeds. He was an avid barrel racer and competed in calf roping. He performed at many Showdeos around the Council Grove area with his children. Floyd was known for drag racing his black and white Buick that could outrun any car around Council Grove. He also loved McDonald’s, especially a spicy McChicken and a Diet Dr. Pepper, and loved chocolate-covered cherries, reading Dean Koontz and Stephen King books, the Kansas City Chiefs, and KU basketball. As a father and grandfather, his love for his family was endless. Of all his passions his greatest was his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his daughter, Traci (Choate) Beckett; son, Timothy (Cinta) Choate; three sisters, Mary Jones, Juanita Ogleds, and Loretta Albrecht; grandchildren, Shandra Beckett, and Zachary Beckett; and great-grandchildren, Elijah Daniels, Holden Howland, and Kiersten Beckett.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Virgil Choate, Ron Choate, William “Bill” Choate, Junior Choate, Donnie Choate, and sister, Dorothy Choate.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., at Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego with Reverend Tony Mattia officiating.
