Calvin Duane Cumbie, age 74, of Wamego, passed away on March 30, 2024, at Stormont Vail Health in Topeka.
Born in Dallas, TX on March 19, 1950 to R. Denny and Mary Lou Cumbie. Calvin’s early years were spent in Brownsboro, TX with his parents and his grandparents Guy and Estelle Cumbie. Calvin's parents later moved to Garland, TX, where he attended South Garland High School. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1968 and honorably discharged in 1972 at the rank of E-3.
He married Lynn Woodworth Ferguson in 1974. She had 2 daughters and they went on to have one more. They moved to Manhattan, Kansas in 1975. He worked for Kershaw Ready mix as a dump truck driver for 5 years. He then went to work for Steel, Pipe and Supply for 6 years and drove over the road and then back to Kershaw for 15 more years. He worked for Mercy Hospital in the Maintenance Department until he retired in 2017.
He loved his girls and would do anything for them. He also loved to sit at the lake and fish. He also loved to travel. When he retired in 2017, he and Lynn sold everything, bought a 5th wheel camper and a truck to pull it and headed out to see the country. Because of health concerns they had to stop traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother Glenn Cumbie and one grandson.
Calvin is survived by Lynn of the home, Lacy Besa and Russell Kalcik, Tammi and Kristopher Daggett of Saint George, KS, Jesse Besa of Manhattan, KS and Jesse’s son Breighton of Riley, KS and Hazel Besa of Alma, Kansas, Lisa and Scott Burk of Olsburg, KS, Blaine Area of Topeka, KS and Isobella of Alma, KS, Colby and Jessie Area of Manhattan, KS, Danielle and Dalton McGee, Dierks, Drake and Deagen of Olsburg, KS. Amy and Erick Arthington of Wamego, KS, Jeceka and Jon Madewell, Isabell, and Zayn, of Crowell, TX. Serargent Rhett Pitchford, Kuwait and Brook Jones, of Topeka, Fayeth Pitchford and Jackson Jantz of Wichita, KS. Sister, Kathy Cumbie and family, reside in Texas.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 am. Friday, April 5th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Joshua Johnson officiating. Private family inurnment will be in the St. George Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m, Thursday, April 4th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
