RILEY COUNTY - Volunteers with Riley County Fire District #1 were dispatched to the area of Baldwin Park Road around 12:18 pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Volunteer firefighters were called to the report of heavy black smoke, and upon arrival located a brush pile which had rekindled.

The fire from the rekindled fire spread out of control and ignited other limbs and nearby dry grass posing a potential major threat to the area.

The fire was quickly extinguished by fire crews and only a small area was burned.

No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.

"With dry conditions and winds gusting to 45 mph today, this fire could have been catastrophic,” said Deputy Fire Chief Doug Russell. “Outdoor burning was not allowed Wednesday, and we’re expecting dangerous fire conditions to continue. Hopefully, we'll get good rain today and spring burning can resume safely soon.”
